Superhydrophobic “lotus effect” materials are typically not sufficiently robust for most real world applications because their small surface features are both easily damaged and vulnerable to fouling. Here, a method for preparing a new type of superhydrophobic (? > 162°) composite material by compression of superhydrophobic metal particles is reported. This material, which has no natural analogue, has low-surface-energy microstructures extending throughout its whole volume. Removing its outer layer by abrasion or cutting deep into it does not result in loss of superhydrophobicity because it merely exposes a fresh portion of the underlying superhydrophobic material. The high contact angle is therefore retained even after accidental damage, and vigorous abrasion can be used to restore hydrophobicity after fouling.

In a previous article in this journal, Daniel Kelly, Steven Stich, Kevin Haley, Serena Eng and Dan Fessler report data that, according to them, foster scepticism about an association between harm and morality existent in the Turiel tradition (Kelly et al., 2007). This article challenges their interpretation of the data. It does so by explicating some methodological problems in the Turiel tradition that Kelly et al. themselves in a way inherit and by drawing on new evidence coming from a partial replication of their research.

AIMS:
The aim of this study was to use general practice data to estimate the prevalence of diabetic nephropathy within the registered diabetes patients and examine variation in practice prevalence and management performance since introduction of this initiative.
METHODS:
Reported quality indicators from the Northern Ireland General Practice Quality and Outcomes Framework were analysed for diabetes and diabetic nephropathy prevalence and management in the period 2004-2008. Variation in prevalence at practice level was assessed using multiple linear regression adjusting for age, practice size, deprivation and glycaemic control.
RESULTS:
In 2006-2007, 57,454 (4.1%) adult diabetic patients were registered in the denominator population of 1.4 million compared with 51,923 (3.8%) in 2004-2005 (mean practice range 0.5-7.7%). Diabetic nephropathy prevalence was 15.1 and 11.5%, respectively (8688 and 5955 patients). Documented diabetic nephropathy prevalence showed marked variation across practices (range 0-100%) and was significantly negatively correlated with diabetes list size, albumin creatinine ratio testing rates and renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system blockade use and positively correlated with exception reporting rates. Specifically, for every increase in 100 diabetic patients to a register, documented diabetic nephropathy prevalence reduced by 40% (P=0.003). On the positive side, median albumin-creatinine ratio testing rates doubled to 82% compared with figures in the pre-Framework era.
CONCLUSIONS:
Implementation of the Northern Ireland General Practice Quality and Outcomes Framework has positively benefitted testing for diabetic nephropathy and increased numbers of detected patients in a short space of time. Large variation in diabetic nephropathy prevalence remains and is associated with diabetes registry size, screening and treatment practices, suggesting that understanding this variation may help detect and better manage diabetic nephropathy.

A recently published genome-wide association study (GWAS) of late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD) revealed genome-wide significant association of variants in or near MS4A4A, CD2AP, EPHA1 and CD33. Meta-analyses of this and a previously published GWAS revealed significant association at ABCA7 and MS4A, independent evidence for association of CD2AP, CD33 and EPHA1 and an opposing yet significant association of a variant near ARID5B. In this study, we genotyped five variants (in or near CD2AP, EPHA1, ARID5B, and CD33) in a large (2,634 LOAD, 4,201 controls), independent dataset comprising six case-control series from the USA and Europe. We performed meta-analyses of the association of these variants with LOAD and tested for association using logistic regression adjusted by age-at-diagnosis, gender, and APOE e4 dosage.

Optical techniques toward the realization of sensitive and selective biosensing platforms have received considerable attention in recent times. Techniques based on interferometry, surface plasmon resonance, and waveguides have all proved popular, while spectroscopy in particular offers much potential. Raman spectroscopy is an information-rich technique in which the vibrational frequencies reveal much about the structure of a compound, but it is a weak process and offers poor sensitivity. In response to this problem, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has received much attention, due to significant increases in sensitivity instigated by bringing the sample into contact with an enhancing substrate. Here we discuss a facile and rapid technique for the detection of pterins using SERS-active colloidal silver suspensions. Pterins are a family of biological compounds that are employed in nature in color pigmentation and as facilitators in metabolic pathways. In this work, small volumes of xanthopterin, isoxanthopterin, and 7,8-dihydrobiopterin have been examined while adsorbed to silver colloids. Limits of detection have been examined for both xanthopterin and isoxanthopterin using a 10-s exposure to a 12 mW 532 nm laser, which, while showing a trade-off between scan time and signal intensity, still provides the opportunity for the investigation of simultaneous detection of both pterins in solution. Surface-enhanced Raman (SERS) spectra of deoxyadenosine and 5'-dAMP on Ag and Au surfaces showed the protonation of both compounds in the N1 position, their orientation geometry on metal surfaces, and the formation of Ag+ complexes at alkaline pH on hydroxylamine-reduced Ag colloids. Interestingly, substitution at the N9 position caused dramatic changes in the relative band intensities within the spectra of both deoxyadenosine and 5'-dAMP compared to that of simple adenine, although they continued to be dominated by adenine vibrations. Concentration-dependent spectra of 5'-dAMP were observed, which matched that of adenine at high concentrations and that of deoxyadenosine at lower concentration (

By using superoleophobic alumina and low vapor pressure oils we have been able to study wetting behavior at high vacuum. Here, we show that a superoleophobic state can exist for some probe liquids, even under high vacuum. However, with other liquids the surfaces are only superoloephobic because air is trapped beneath the droplet and the contact angle decreases dramatically (150 degrees-120 degrees) if this air is removed. These observations open up the possibility of designing materials which fully exploit the potential of physically trapped air to achieve extreme oleophobicity and/or hydrophobicity. We present surface enhanced Raman optical activity (SEROA), as well as Raman, SERS and ROA, spectra of D- and L-ribose. By employing a gel forming polyacrylic acid to control colloid aggregation and associated birefringent artefacts we observe the first definitive proof of SEROA through measurement of mirror image bands for the two enantiomers.

Here we report an example of a mixed thiol monolayer on the surface of Ag nanoparticles which promotes adsorption and quantitative SERS detection of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, “Ecstasy”); the thiols in the mixed monolayers act synergistically since MDMA does not adsorb onto colloids modified with either of the thiols separately.

The syntheses of 2,2'-bipyridin-5-ylmethyl-5-(1,2-dithiolan-3-yl)pentanoate (L1) and N-(2,2'-bipyridin-5-ylmethyl)-5-(1,2-dithiolan-3-yl)pentanamide (L2) and their neutral fac carbonylrhenium(I) complexes [Re(L1)(CO)(3)Br] and [Re(L2)(CO)(3)Br] are reported. The. electronic absorption and emission spectra of the complexes are similar to the spectrum of the reference compound [Re(bipy)(CO)(3)Br] and correlate well with the density functional theory calculations undertaken. The surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) spectra (excited at both 532 and 785 nm) of the ligands and complexes were examined and compared to the spectrum of ethyl 5-(1,2-dithiolan-3-yl)pentanoate (L3), revealing that there is very little contribution to the spectra of these species from the dithiolated alkyl chains. The spectra are dominated by the characteristic peaks of a metalated 2,2'-bipyridyl group,arising from the silver colloid/ion complexation, and the rhenium center. The rhenium complexes show weak SERS bands related to the CO stretches and a broad band at 510 cm(-1) assigned to Re-CO stretching. Concentration dependent studies, measured by the relative intensity of several assigned peaks, indicate that, as the surface coverage increases, the bipyridine moiety lifts off the surface In the case of L1 and L2, this gives rise to complexes with silver at low concentration, enhancing the signals observed, while for the tricarbonylbromorhenium complexes of these ligands, the presence of the disulfide tether allows an enhancement in the limits of detection of these surface-borne species of 20 times in the case of [ReL2(CO)(3)Br] over [Re(bipy)(CO)(3)Br].
