Recently nano scale zero valent iron particles (nZVI) have been considered as smart adsorbent for environmental and groundwater remediation. Although several synthetic methods are available for the preparation of nZVI, air stable nZVI are not available for remediation works. Further, challenges demand synthesis of nZVI without stabilizers and capping agents. A modified methodology for the synthesis of air stable nZVI has been developed without any capping agents and characterized by powder X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy Energy-dispersive X-Ray (SEM-EDS), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The results of the present study suggest that the synthetic nZVI are air-stable over a period of one year and consists of particles of 30-40 nm in diameter. Although a layer of less than 3 am thick oxide/hydroxide is observed by TEM and XPS, it appears to be due to oxidation of outer surface during analysis. Adsorption study has shown that the synthetic nZVI are more effective adsorbent than the commercial nZVI and can remove simultaneously arsenite As-III] and arsenate As-V] from water without prior reduction of As-V to As-III. The removal process is adsorptive rather than precipitative and the removal of As-III is greater than that of As-V.

PbZr1-xTixO3 ceramics synthesised by low temperature calcination followed by sintering at 1280 degrees C show a Morphotropic Phase Boundary (MPB) for compositions of x=0.44-0.51. The morphotropic phase boundary is wider for samples with smaller grain sizes due to the synthesis route. A Rietveld analysis is performed on a composition of x=0.5 composition to quantify the phase fractions of the tetragonal and monoclinic phases present in the PZT system. Temperature dependent X-ray diffraction and dielectric studies of PbZr0.5Ti0.5O3 composition demonstrated a phase transformation from monoclinic to tetragonal at 270 degrees C followed by a ferroelectric tetragonal to a paraelectric cubic transition at 370 degrees C. Thus, the poling of these ceramics should be performed below 270 degrees C to benefit from the presence of a monoclinic phase. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

The high efficiency of fuel-cell-powered electric vehicles makes them a potentially viable option for future transportation. Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells (PEFCs) are most promising among various fuel cells for electric traction due to their quick start-up and low-temperature operation. In recent years, the performance of PEFCs has reached the acceptable level both for automotive and stationary applications and efforts are now being expended in increasing their durability, which remains a major concern in their commercialization. To make PEFCs meet automotive targets an understanding of the factors affecting the stability of carbon support and platinum catalyst is critical. Alloying platinum (Pt) with first-row transition metals such as cobalt (Co) is reported to facilitate both higher degree of crystallinity and enhanced activity in relation to pristine Pt. But a major challenge for the application of Pt-transition metal alloys in PEFCs is to improve the stability of these binary catalysts. Dissolution of the non-precious metal in the acidic environment could alleviate the activity of the catalysts and hence cell performance. The use of graphitic carbon as cathode-catalyst support enhances the long-term stability of Pt and its alloys in relation to non-graphitic carbon as the former exhibits higher resistance to carbon corrosion in relation to the latter in PEFC cathodes during accelerated-stress test (AST). Changes in electrochemical surface area (ESA), cell performance and charge-transfer resistance are monitored during AST through cyclic voltammetry, cell polarization and impedance measurements, respectively. Studies on catalytic electrodes with X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy reflect that graphitic carbon-support resists carbon corrosion and helps mitigating aggregation of Pt and Pt3Co catalyst particles. Porous zirconia ceramic monoliths have been extensively used in thermo-structural applications due to their inherent low thermal conductivity in combination with their adaptability to form complicated shapes through advanced ceramic processing techniques. However, extruded cellular honeycomb structures made from these materials have been less explored for thermal management applications. There exist large potential applications due to their unique configurations, resulting in better heat-management mechanisms. Some of the studies carried out on zirconia honeycombs are safeguarded through patents due to its technical importance, or the information is not in the public domain. In the present study, for the sake of comparison, honeycomb specimens with varying wall thicknesses and unit cell lengths maintaining almost same bulk density of around 90% theoretical and relative density of 0.34-0.37 were prepared and subjected to thermal conductivity evaluation along with the solid samples with relative density of 1.0 using monotonic heating regime methodology. In addition, the effect of channel shape was also evaluated using square and triangular channeled honeycombs with the same relative densities. The results obtained from these specimens were correlated with their configurations to bring out the advantages accrued by using the honeycomb with these configurations. It was observed that a significant decrease in thermal conductivity was achieved in honeycombs, which can be attributed to the behavior of various heat transfer mechanisms that are operative at high temperatures in combination with the considerable reduction in thermal mass and the consequent conduction through the solids.

In the present study, electrodeposition technique was used to produce Ag-Ni nanowires. Ag-Ni system shows extremely high bulk immiscibility. Nanowire morphology was achieved by employing an anodic alumina membrane having pores of similar to 200 nm diameter. Microstructure of as-deposited wire was composed of nano-sized solid solution structured Ag-Ni nanoparticles embedded in a matrix of pure Ag phase. It is proposed that the two phase microstructure resulted from an initial formation of solid solution structured nanoparticles in the alumina template pore followed by nucleation of pure Ag phase over the particles which eventually grew to form the matrix phase. alpha-Fe2O3 nanoparticles were synthesized by a low temperature solution combustion method. The structural, magnetic and luminescence properties were studied. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) pattern of alpha-Fe2O3 exhibits pure rhombohedral structure. SEM micrographs reveal the dumbbell shaped particles. The EPR spectrum shows an intense resonance signal at g approximate to 5.61 corresponding to isolated Fe3+ ions situated in axially distorted sites, whereas the g approximate to 2.30 is due to Fe3+ ions coupled by exchange interaction. Raman studies show A(1g) (225 cm(-1)) and E-g (293 and 409 cm(-1)) phonon modes. The absorption at 300 nm results from the ligand to metal charge transfer transitions whereas the 540 nm peak is mainly due to the (6)A(1) + (6)A(1) —> T-4(1)(4G) + T-4(1)(4G) excitation of an Fe3+-Fe3+ pair. A prominent TL glow peak was observed at 140 C at heating rate of 5 degrees C s(-1). The trapping parameters namely activation energy (E), frequency factor (s) and order of kinetics (b) were evaluated and discussed. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The authors studied the formation of a wafer-scale network of connected colloidal beads by reactive ion etching. The dimensions of the connections have been studied as a function of etching time for colloidal beads of different sizes, and could be well controlled. The authors have found that the nano-network forms and disappears for the same time of etching independent of the diameter of the polystyrene beads. With recent interest of connected colloidal networks in various optical sensing applications, such as photonic crystals, as surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrates, the studies have potential uses in the development of wafer-scale nanophotonic sensors.

In solid-state mechanochromic luminescence (ML) materials, it remains a challenge to establish the origin of fluorescence color changes upon mechanical action and to determine why only some fluorophores exhibit ML behavior. The study of mechanical properties by nanoindentation, followed by ML experiments on green- and cyan-emitting polymorphs of difluoroboron avobenzone reveals that upon smearing, the plastically deformable cyan form shows a prominent color change to yellow, while in the harder green form the redshifted emission is barely detectable. Crystal structure analysis reveals the presence of slip planes in the softer cyan form that can facilitate the formation of recoverable and low energy defects in the structure. Hence, the cyan form exhibits prominent and reversible ML behavior. This suggests a potential design strategy for efficient ML materials.

YAlO3:Ni2+ (0.1 mol%) doped nanophosphor was synthesised by a low temperature solution combustion method. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) confirms the orthorhombic phase of yttrium aluminate (YAlO3) along with traces of Y3Al5O12. Scanning Electron microscopy (SEM) shows that the powder particles appears to be spherical in shape with large agglomeration. The average crystallite sizes appeared to be in the range 45-90 nm and the same was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Williamson-Hall (W-H) plots. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) and photoluminescence (PL) studies reveal that Ni2+ ions are in octahedral coordination. Thermoluminescence (TL) glow curve consists of two peaks with the main peak at similar to 224 degrees C and a shouldered peak at 285 degrees C was recorded in the range 0.2-15 kGy gamma-irradiated samples. The TL intensity was found to be increasing linearly for 224 degrees C and 285 degrees C peaks up to 1 kGy and thereafter it shows sub-linear (up to 8 kGy) and saturation behavior. The trap parameters namely activation energy (E), order of kinetics (b), frequency factor (s) at different gamma-doses were determined using Chens glow peak shape and Luschiks methods then the results are discussed in detail. Simple glow peak structure, the 224 degrees C peak in YAlO3:Ni2+ nanophosphor can be used in personal dosimetry. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper we discuss a novel procedure for constructing clusters of bound particles in the case of a quantum integrable derivative delta-function Bose gas in one dimension. It is shown that clusters of bound particles can be constructed for this Bose gas for some special values of the coupling constant, by taking the quasi-momenta associated with the corresponding Bethe state to be equidistant points on a single circle in the complex momentum plane. We also establish a connection between these special values of the coupling constant and some fractions belonging to the Farey sequences in number theory. This connection leads to a classification of the clusters of bound particles associated with the derivative delta-function Bose gas and allows us to study various properties of these clusters like their size and their stability under the variation of the coupling constant. The present research focused on determining the effect of hydroxyapatite-20 wt% mullite (H20M) particle eluates on apoptosis and differentiation of human fetal osteoblast (hFOB) cells. The H20M particles (257 +/- 37 nm) were prepared, starting with the production of a nanocomposite using a unique route of spark plasma sintering, followed by a repeated grinding-cryo treatment and elution process. Tetrazolium based cytotoxicity assay results showed a time-and dose-dependent effect of H20M particle eluates on hFOB cytotoxicity. In particular, the results revealed statistically reduced cell viability after hFOB were exposed to the above 10% H20M (257 +/- 37 nm) eluates for 48 h. The apoptotic cell death triggered by H20M treatment was proven by the analysis of molecular markers of apoptosis, that is, the Bcl-2 family of genes. hFOB expression of Bcl-xL and Bcl-xS significantly increased 25.6- and 25.2-fold for 50% of H20M concentrations, respectively. The ratio of Bcl-xL/Bax (4.01) decreased 2-fold for hFOB exposed to 100% of H20M eluates than that for 10% H20M eluate (7.94) treated hFOB cells. On the other hand, the Bcl-xS/Bax ratio for the 10% H20M eluate was 4.15-fold, whereas for 100% H20M eluates, it was 11.55-fold. Specifically, the anti-apoptotic effect of the H20M particle eluates was corroborated by the up-regulation of bone cell differentiation marker genes such as, collagen type I, cbfa, and osteocalcin. In summary, the present work clearly demonstrated that H20M submicron to nanometer composite particle eluates have a minimal effect on hFOB apoptosis and can even up-regulate the expression of bone cell markers at the molecular level.

Infrared spectra of solid formamide are reported as a function of temperature. Solid formamide samples were prepared at 30 K and then annealed to higher temperatures (300 K) with infrared transmission spectra being recorded over the entire temperature range. The NH2 vibrations of the formamide molecule were found to be particularly very sensitive to temperature change. The IR spectra revealed a phase change occurring in solid formamide between 155 and 165 K. Spectral changes observed above and below the phase transition may be attributed to a rearrangement between formamide dimers and the formation of polymers is proposed at higher temperatures.

The effect of molecular shape and position of hydrogen bonding functionality in the solid state structural self-assembly was investigated using diaminotriazine substituted diphenyl ether based positional isomers (1-5). The molecular shape was modulated by changing diaminotriazine position that produced channel supramolecular structures in 1, 3 and 5. There exists a direct correlation between the molecular shape and three dimensional structures; more linear molecules resulted in close-packing whereas molecules with a labyrinthine topology formed a channel structure. Supramolecular aspects pertaining to the influence of solvent of crystallization in structure formation and reversible structural transformation in solid state were also explored. 1-5 exhibited tunable solid state fluorescence (lambda(max) = 437-496 nm) depending on the diaminotriazine substitutional position and 3 showed solvent-dependent solid state fluorescence. The present study describes the generation of a supramolecular channel structure with functional properties such as tunable fluorescence by varying the position of hydrogen bond functionality and solvent of crystallization.

A zinc-nicotinate complex has been prepared by direct reaction of zinc acetate and nicotinic acid in the presence of template tetramethylethylenediamine and is characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR, and TGA/DTA. The Zn complex was a precursor for the synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles. A correlation of the thermal and spectral properties of the precursor complex with its structure has been discussed. Thermolysis under air was studied by thermogravimetry, and the resulting ZnO product was characterized by XRD and TEM, showing compact particles with a diameter of about 1750nm.

With the objective of investigating the direct conversion of inorganic carbonates such as CaCO3 to hydrocarbons, assisted by transition metal ions, we have carried out studies on CaCO3 in an intimate admixture with iron oxides (FeCaCO) with a wide range of Fe/Ca mole ratios (x), prepared by co-precipitation. The hydrogen reduction of FeCaCO at 673 K gives up to 23% yield of the hydrocarbons CH4, C2H4, C2H6 and C3H8, leaving solid iron residues in the form of iron metal, oxides and carbide particles. The yield of hydrocarbons increases with x and the conversion of hydrocarbons occurs through the formation of CO. While the total yield of hydrocarbons obtained by us is comparable to that in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, the selectivity for C-2-C-3 hydrocarbons reported here is noteworthy.
