Blend films (free-standing) containing 20% in volume of polyaniline (PANI) in 80% of natural rubber (NR) were fabricated by casting in three different ways: (1) adding PANI-EB (emeraldine base) dissolved in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) to the latex (NRL), (2) adding PANI-EB dissolved in in-cresol to NR dissolved in xylol (NRD), (3) overlaying the surface of a pure NR cast film with a PANI layer grown by in situ polymerization (NRO). All the films were immersed into HCl solution to achieve the primary doping (protonation) of PANI before the characterization. The main goal here was to investigate the elastomeric and electrical conductivity properties for each blend, which may be applied as pressure and deformation sensors in the future. The characterization was carried out by optical microscopy, dc conductivity, vibrational spectroscopy (infrared absorption and Raman scattering), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), and tensile stress-strain curves. The results suggest that the NRL blend is the most suitable in terms of mechanical and electrical properties required for applications in pressure and deformation sensors: a gain of conductivity without losing the elastomeric property of the rubber. Dynamic mechanical properties of a polyurethane (PU) elastomer and a mortar processed with the same elastomer (modified polytetramethylene ether glycol (PTMEG)) were studied. The results obtained showed that the liquid aromatic amine ETHACURE (R) 300, used as cure agent, can be used to substitute the aromatic amine MOCA (R), which is usually used as cure agent in high performance elastomers. The resulting mortar produced with ETHACURE (R) 300 presents similar dynamic-mechanical thermal properties when compared with MOCA (R). However, dynamic-mechanical thermal analysis studies showed that the mortar developed with ETHACURE (R) 300 presents some advantages such as the low values of tan d, indicating a good capacity of recovery of the strain after retreating an applied force. Photopyroelectric spectroscopy (PPES), in the 400 < lambda < 900 nm wavelength range, was used to study thermal properties of differently doped polyaniline (PAN) films. The photopyroelectric intensity signal V-n(lambda) and its phase F-n(lambda) were independently measured, as well as the intensity V-n(f) and the phase F-n(f) (f being the chopping frequency) for a given A of the saturation part of the PPES spectrum. Equations of both the intensity and the phase of the PPES signal, taking into account the thermal and the optical characteristics of the PAN films and the pyroelectric detector, were used to fit the experimental results. From the fittings we obtained, with great accuracy, the values of thermal conductivity k and thermal diffusivity coefficient a of PAN films of different doping degrees. It was observed that, in contrast with the strong doping-dependence of the electrical conductivity, the thermal parameters of PAN films remained practically unchanged under doping. This apparent discrepancy is explained by the granular metal model of doped PAN. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The real (epsilon') and imaginary (epsilon) components of the complex permittivity of blends of PVDF [poly(vinylidene fluoride)] with POMA [poly(o-methoxyaniline)] doped with toluenosulfonic acid (TSA) containing 1, 2.5, and 5 wt % POMA-TSA were determined in the frequency interval between 10(2) and 3 X 10(6) Hz and in the temperature range from -120 up to 120degreesC. It was observed that the values of epsilon' and epsilon had a greater increase with the POMA-TSA content and with a temperature in the region of frequencies below 10 kHz. This effect decreased with frequency and it was attributed to interfacial polarization. This polarization was caused by the blend heterogeneity, formed by conductive POMA-TSA agglomerates dispersed in an insulating matrix of PVDF. The equation of Maxwell-Garnett, modified by Cohen, was used to evaluate the permittivity and conductivity behavior of POMA-TSA in the blends. A strong decrease was observed in POMA-TSA conductivity in the blend, which was bigger the lower the POMA-TSA content in the blend. This decrease could have been caused either by the POMA dedoping during the blend preparation process or by its dispersion into the insulating matrix. (C) 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Molecular mobility in castor oil based polyurethane was investigated with thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC) measurements and alternating-current (ac) dielectric relaxation spectroscopy. Three peaks could be observed in TSDC thermograms from 173 to 373 K. The relaxation located at 213 K could be attributed to the change in the molecular chain due to the interaction between the isocyanate and the solvent, and it was well fitted with the Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann equation. The other two peaks were located at 274 and 365 K and could be attributed to interfacial polarization and space charge, respectively. (c) 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Objectives: This study evaluated the effect of disinfection by immersion in sodium perborate (50 degrees C/10 min) or microwave irradiation (650 W/6 min) on the linear dimensional change (LDC) of four reline resins (Kooliner-K, New Truliner-N, Tokuso Rebase Fast-T, Ufi Gel Hard-U) and one heat-polymerizing denture base resin (Lucitone 550-L). Methods: Specimens (50.0 mm diameter, 0.5 mm thickness) were made using a split mold with reference points, and divided into two controls and four test groups (u = 8). The distances between the points were measured on the mold (baseline readings), and compared to those obtained from the specimens after: polymerization or immersion in water (37 degrees C) for 7 days (controls); 2 or 7 cycles of disinfection by immersion or microwave irradiation. Results: the two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (alpha = 0.05) showed that microwave disinfection significantly increased the mean LDC of materials L (-1.43%), N (-1.27%) and K (-1.06%). Material N also exhibited a significant increase in LDC after two cycles of chemical disinfection (-0.73%). For U (-0.47%) and T (-0.21%) materials, no significant changes in LDC were found. Conclusions: Microwave disinfection increases the shrinkage of materials L, N, and K. The dimensional stability of resins U and T was not affected by the disinfection methods evaluated. This study evaluated the influence of microwave disinfection on the strength of intact and relined denture bases. Water sorption and solubility were also evaluated. A heat-polymerized acrylic resin (Lucitone 550) was used to construct 4-mm-thick (n = 40) and 2-mm-thick (n = 160) denture bases. Denture bases (2mm) were relined with an autopolymerizing resin (Tokuso Rebase Fast, Ufi Gel Hard, Kooliner, or New Truliner). Specimens were divided into four groups (n = 10): without treatment, one or seven cycles of microwave disinfection (650 W for 6 min), and water storage at 37 degrees C for 7 days. Specimens were vertically loaded (5 mm/min) until failure. Disc-shaped specimens (50 min x 0.5 mm) were fabricated (n = 10) to evaluate water sorption and solubility. Data on maximum fracture load (N), deflection (%), and solubility (%) were analyzed by two-way analysis of variance and Student-Newman-Keuls tests (alpha = 0.05). One cycle of microwave disinfection decreased the deflection at fracture and fracture energy of Tokuso Rebase Fast and New Truliner specimens. The strength of denture bases microwaved daily for 7 days was similar to the strength of those immersed in water for 7 days. Microwave disinfection increased the water sorption of all materials and affected the solubility of the reline materials. (C) 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

This study investigated the microbial action in soil on poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) films and a PLLA/PVC 7 : 3 blend, using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), contact angle and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The films (50 mu m) were obtained from the evaporation of dichloromethane solutions and buried in soil columns, in controlled conditions, for 120 days. The results showed that the surface of the PLLA films and blend became 18 and 31% more hydrophilic, respectively. The morphology of the films also changed after 120 days of microbial treatment, particularly that of the PLLA phase in the blend, confirmed by structural and conformational changes in the FTIR CO region at 12001000 cm1 and an increase in the relative intensity of the band at 1773 cm1, which was attributed to C O group vibration due to a rotational isomer in the interlamellar region (semi-ordered region). Besides the biotreated PVC presented changes in the C-Cl band at 738 cm1, due to the presence of some PVC conformational isomer. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2012
