We present a phase-field model for the dynamics of the interface between two inmiscible fluids with arbitrary viscosity contrast in a rectangular Hele-Shaw cell. With asymptotic matching techniques we check the model to yield the right Hele-Shaw equations in the sharp-interface limit, and compute the corrections to these equations to first order in the interface thickness. We also compute the effect of such corrections on the linear dispersion relation of the planar interface. We discuss in detail the conditions on the interface thickness to control the accuracy and convergence of the phase-field model to the limiting Hele-Shaw dynamics. In particular, the convergence appears to be slower for high viscosity contrasts.

A cardiac-triggered free-breathing three-dimensional balanced fast field-echo projection magnetic resonance (MR) angiographic sequence with a two-dimensional pencil-beam aortic labeling pulse was developed for the renal arteries. For data acquisition during free breathing in eight healthy adults and seven consecutive patients with renal artery disease, real-time navigator technology was implemented. This technique allows high-spatial-resolution and high-contrast renal MR angiography and visualization of renal artery stenosis without exogenous contrast agent or breath hold. Initial promising results warrant larger clinical studies.

We calculate the ripplon field contribution to the self-energy of an electron exterior to a liquid for planar and spherical geometries. We compare the full dielectric calculation of the electron-liquid interaction with the simpler alternative method consisting of integrating the electron-atom static-induced-dipolar potential through the whole liquid volume. We obtain good agreement between both methods for a nonpolar liquid such as 4He but differences up to 40% for a polar liquid such as water. We study the conditions under which the ripplon contribution to the self-energy is a perturbation. For an electron moving parallel to a planar liquid surface, we calculate the ripplon contribution to its stopping power. For this dynamical case, we conclude that the alternative method is a good approximation even for polar liquids.

Two-dimensional (2D)-breath-hold coronary magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) has been shown to be a fast and reliable method to depict the proximal coronary arteries. Recent developments, however, allow for free-breathing navigator gated and navigator corrected three-dimensional (3D) coronary MRA. These 3D approaches have potential for improved signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and allow for the acquisition of adjacent thin slices without the misregistration problems known from 2D approaches. Still, a major impediment of a 3D acquisition is the increased scan time. The purpose of this study was the implementation of a free-breathing navigator gated and corrected ultra-fast 3D coronary MRA technique, which allows for scan times of less than 5 minutes. Twelve healthy adult subjects were examined in the supine position using a navigator gated and corrected ECG triggered ultra-fast 3D interleaved gradient echo planar imaging sequence (TFE-EPI). A 3D slab, consisting of 20 slices with a reconstructed slice thickness of 1.5 mm, was acquired with free-breathing. The diastolic TFE-EPI acquisition block was preceded by a T2prep pre-pulse, a diaphragmatic navigator pulse, and a fat suppression pre-pulse. With a TR of 19 ms and an effective TE of 5.4 ms, the duration of the data acquisition window duration was 38 ms. The in-plane spatial resolution was 1.0-1.3 mm*1.5-1.9 mm. In all cases, the entire left main (LM) and extensive portions of the left anterior descending (LAD) and right coronary artery (RCA) could be visualized with an average scan time for the entire 3D-volume data set of 2:57 +/- 0:51 minutes. Average contiguous vessel length visualized was 53 +/- 11 mm (range: 42 to 75 mm) for the LAD and 84 +/- 14 mm (range: 62 to 112 mm) for the RCA. Contrast-to-noise between coronary blood and myocardium was 5.0 +/- 2.3 for the LM/LAD and 8.0 +/- 2.9 for the RCA, resulting in an excellent suppression of myocardium. We present a new approach for free-breathing 3D coronary MRA, which allows for scan times superior to corresponding 2D coronary MRA approaches, and which takes advantage of the enhanced SNR of 3D acquisitions and the post-processing benefits of thin adjacent slices. The robust image quality and the short average scanning time suggest that this approach may be useful for screening the major coronary arteries or identification of anomalous coronary arteries. J. The plume generated by ablation of hydroxyapatite targets under ArF excimer laser irradiation has been investigated by means of fast intensified CCD-imaging and optical emission spectroscopy. Results have shown that the plume splits into two plasma clouds as it expands. Time and spatial resolved spectra have revealed that under the experiment conditions emission is mostly due to calcium neutral atoms and calcium oxide molecular radicals. Imaging of the plume with the aid of bandpass filters has demonstrated that the emissive species in the larger and faster plasma cloud are calcium neutral atoms, whereas in the smaller and slower one they are calcium oxide molecular radicals

A method of making a multiple matched filter which allows the recognition of different characters in successive planes in simple conditions is proposed. The generation of the filter is based on recording on the same plate the Fourier transforms of the different patterns to be recognized, each of which is affected by different spherical phase factors because the patterns have been placed at different distances from the lens. This is proved by means of experiments with a triple filter which allows satisfactory recognition of three characters.

The use of different kinds of nonlinear filtering in a joint transform correlator are studied and compared. The study is divided into two parts, one corresponding to object space and the second to the Fourier domain of the joint power spectrum. In the first part, phase and inverse filters are computed; their inverse Fourier transforms are also computed, thereby becoming the reference in the object space. In the Fourier space, the binarization of the power spectrum is realized and compared with a new procedure for removing the spatial envelope. All cases are simulated and experimentally implemented by a compact joint transform correlator.

An algorithm for computing correlation filters based on synthetic discriminant functions that can be displayed on current spatial light modulators is presented. The procedure is nondivergent, computationally feasible, and capable of producing multiple solutions, thus overcoming some of the pitfalls of previous methods.

The expansion dynamics of the ablation plume generated by KrF laser irradiation of hydroxyapatite targets in a 0.1 mbar water atmosphere has been studied by fast intensified charge coupled device imaging with the aid of optical bandpass filters. The aim of the filters is to isolate the emission of a single species, which allows separate analysis of its expansion. Images obtained without a filter revealed two emissive components in the plume, which expand at different velocities for delay times of up to 1.1 ¿s. The dynamics of the first component is similar to that of a spherical shock wave, whereas the second component, smaller than the first, expands at constant velocity. Images obtained through a 520 nm filter show that the luminous intensity distribution and evolution of emissive atomic calcium is almost identical to those of the first component of the total emission and that there is no contribution from this species to the emission from the second component of the plume. The analysis through a 780 nm filter reveals that atomic oxygen partially diffuses into the water atmosphere and that there is a contribution from this species to the emission from the second component. The last species studied here, calcium oxide, was analyzed by means of a 600 nm filter. The images revealed an intensity pattern more complex than those from the atomic species. Calcium oxide also contributes to the emission from the second component. Finally, all the experiments were repeated in a Ne atmosphere. Comparison of the images revealed chemical reactions between the first component of the plume and the water atmosphere.

A computer-aided method to improve the thickness uniformity attainable when coating multiple substrates inside a thermal evaporation physical vapor deposition unit is presented. The study is developed for the classical spherical (dome-shaped) calotte and also for a plane sector reversible holder setup. This second arrangement is very useful for coating both sides of the substrate, such as antireflection multilayers on lenses. The design of static correcting shutters for both kinds of configurations is also discussed. Some results of using the method are presented as an illustration.

Hidróxidos duplos lamelares (HDL) são intercaladores potenciais aniônicos. Com o objetivo de obter fertilizantes de liberação lenta de nitrato, foram sintetizados HDL com a fórmula geral [M2+1-xM3+x(OH)2]x-(NO3)x.yH2O, em que M2+ = Mg2+ e M3+ = Al3+ e, ou, Fe3+, utilizando-se o método de coprecipitação a pH alcalino constante. Medidas de difração de raios-X evidenciaram que a cristalinidade aumenta com o acréscimo do valor de pH e da razão molar M2+/M3+. As medidas de FTIR apresentaram bandas características de nitrato livre no espaço interlamelar, além de pequena contaminação de íons carbonato. Medidas de TGA/DTA possibilitaram a confirmação das composições e dos teores de íons de nitrato intercalados. As curvas de liberação de nitrato demonstraram dois comportamentos de liberação complementar, um inicial rápido (A) e um lento gradativo (D), sendo, este último, relacionado à orientação planar do íon nitrato intercalado. Os materiais sintetizados e investigados neste trabalho apontaram grande potencial para serem utilizados como matrizes para fertilizantes de liberação lenta de nitrato.

A covariant formalism is developed for describing perturbations on vacuum domain walls and strings. The treatment applies to arbitrary domain walls in (N+1)-dimensional flat spacetime, including the case of bubbles of a true vacuum nucleating in a false vacuum. Straight strings and planar walls in de Sitter space, as well as closed strings and walls nucleating during inflation, are also considered. Perturbations are represented by a scalar field defined on the unperturbed wall or string world sheet. In a number of interesting cases, this field has a tachyonic mass and a nonminimal coupling to the world-sheet curvature.

We develop a covariant quantum theory of fluctuations on vacuum domain walls and strings. The fluctuations are described by a scalar field defined on the classical world sheet of the defects. We consider the following cases: straight strings and planar walls in flat space, true vacuum bubbles nucleating in false vacuum, and strings and walls nucleating during inflation. The quantum state for the perturbations is constructed so that it respects the original symmetries of the classical solution. In particular, for the case of vacuum bubbles and nucleating strings and walls, the geometry of the world sheet is that of a lower-dimensional de Sitter space, and the problem reduces to the quantization of a scalar field of tachyonic mass in de Sitter space. In all cases, the root-mean-squared fluctuation is evaluated in detail, and the physical implications are briefly discussed.

Neuronal oscillations are an important aspect of EEG recordings. These oscillations are supposed to be involved in several cognitive mechanisms. For instance, oscillatory activity is considered a key component for the top-down control of perception. However, measuring this activity and its influence requires precise extraction of frequency components. This processing is not straightforward. Particularly, difficulties with extracting oscillations arise due to their time-varying characteristics. Moreover, when phase information is needed, it is of the utmost importance to extract narrow-band signals. This paper presents a novel method using adaptive filters for tracking and extracting these time-varying oscillations. This scheme is designed to maximize the oscillatory behavior at the output of the adaptive filter. It is then capable of tracking an oscillation and describing its temporal evolution even during low amplitude time segments. Moreover, this method can be extended in order to track several oscillations simultaneously and to use multiple signals. These two extensions are particularly relevant in the framework of EEG data processing, where oscillations are active at the same time in different frequency bands and signals are recorded with multiple sensors. The presented tracking scheme is first tested with synthetic signals in order to highlight its capabilities. Then it is applied to data recorded during a visual shape discrimination experiment for assessing its usefulness during EEG processing and in detecting functionally relevant changes. This method is an interesting additional processing step for providing alternative information compared to classical time-frequency analyses and for improving the detection and analysis of cross-frequency couplings.

Many of the most interesting questions ecologists ask lead to analyses of spatial data. Yet, perhaps confused by the large number of statistical models and fitting methods available, many ecologists seem to believe this is best left to specialists. Here, we describe the issues that need consideration when analysing spatial data and illustrate these using simulation studies. Our comparative analysis involves using methods including generalized least squares, spatial filters, wavelet revised models, conditional autoregressive models and generalized additive mixed models to estimate regression coefficients from synthetic but realistic data sets, including some which violate standard regression assumptions. We assess the performance of each method using two measures and using statistical error rates for model selection. Methods that performed well included generalized least squares family of models and a Bayesian implementation of the conditional auto-regressive model. Ordinary least squares also performed adequately in the absence of model selection, but had poorly controlled Type I error rates and so did not show the improvements in performance under model selection when using the above methods. Removing large-scale spatial trends in the response led to poor performance. These are empirical results; hence extrapolation of these findings to other situations should be performed cautiously. Nevertheless, our simulation-based approach provides much stronger evidence for comparative analysis than assessments based on single or small numbers of data sets, and should be considered a necessary foundation for statements of this type in future.
