This article describes a facile, low-cost, solution-phase approach to the large-scale preparation of Hg1-xCdxTe nanostructures of different shapes such as nanorods, quantum dots, hexagonal cubes of different sizes and different compositions at a growth temperature of 180 degrees C using an air stable Te source by solvothermal technique. The XRD spectrum shows that the crystals are cubic in their basic structure and reveals the variation in lattice constant as a function of composition. The size and morphology of the products were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The formation of irregular shaped particles and few nano-rods in the present synthesis is attributed to the cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The room temperature FTIR absorption and PL studies for a compositon of x = 0.8 gives a band gap of 1.1 eV and a broad emission in NIR region (0.5-0.9 eV) with all bands attributed to surface defects.

Dissolution of barium ion from aqueous suspensions of commercial nano-sized barium titanate powders (BaTiO3) has been studied at various pH values, solids loading, different time intervals and different electrolyte concentrations. Zeta potential measurements at various pH values and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy study were also carried out to know the surface behaviour. Dissolution of Ba2+ depends on the suspension pH and stirring time period. The iso-electric points were found at 3.4 and 12.2 for as-received BaTiO3 powder and 2.3 for the leached BaTiO3. The Ba2+-leached BaTiO3 suspension retards further leaching of Ba2+ ions at different pH values, which favours the achievement of stable suspension.

Layered lanthanide sulfate compounds with three different structures have been prepared and characterized. The compounds C10H10N2] La(SO4)(2)]center dot 2H(2)O (I), C10H10N2] La(SO4)(2)(H2O)(2)](2) (Ha), C10H10N2]Pr(SO4)(2)(H2O)(2)](2) (IIb), C10H10N2]Nd-2(SO4)(4)(H2O)(2)](2) (IIIa), C10H10N2]Sm-2(SO4)(4)(H2O)(2)](2) (IIIb), and C10H10N2]Eu-2(SO4)(4)(H2O)(2)] 2 (IIIC) have anionic lanthanide sulfate layers separated by protonated bipyridine molecules. The layers are formed by the connectivity between the lanthanide polyhedra and sulfate tetrahedra. The formation of a two-dimensional La-O-La layer (la), Pr-O-Pr chains (IIb), and a tetramer cluster (IIIa) is noteworthy. The compounds exhibit honeycomb (I), square (IIa, IIb), and honeycomb (IIIa-IIIc) net arrangements, when the connectivity between the lanthanide ions is considered. Optical studies indicate the observation of characteristic metal-centered emission at room temperature. The Nd compound (IIIa) exhibits a two-photon upconversion behavior.

The partial thermodynamic functions of the solvent component of a ternary system have been deduced in terms of the interaction parameters by integration of several series which emerge from the Maclaurin infinite series based on the integral property of the system and subjected to appropriate boundary conditions. The series integration shows that the resulting partial functions are suitable for interpreting the thermodynamic properties of the system and are independent of compositional paths. In the present analysis, the higher order terms of these series are found to make insignificant contributions.

Dielectric properties of potassium titanyl phosphate have been investigated as a function of thickness and frequency, as well as annealing treatment under various atmospheres. The low frequency dielectric constant of KTP crystals is shown to depend upon the sample thickness, and this feature is attributed to the existence of surface layers. The frequency-dependent dielectric response of KTP exhibits a non-Debye type relaxation, with a distribution of relaxation times. The dielectric behavior of KTP samples annealed in various atmospheres shows that the low frequency dielectric constant is influenced by the contribution from the space charge layers. Prolonged annealing of the samples leads to a surface degradation, resulting in the formation of a surface layer of lower dielectric constant. This surface degradation is least when annealed in the presence of dry oxygen. From the analysis of the dielectric data using complex electric modulus, alpha(m) has been evaluated for the virgin and annealed samples. (C) 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Model exact static and frequency-dependent polarizabilities, static second hyperpolarizabilities and THG coefficents of cumulenes and polyenynes, calculated within the correlated Pariser-Parr-Pople (PPP) model defined over the pi-framework are reported and compared with the results for the polyenes. It is found that for the same chain length, the polarizabilities and THG coefficients of the cumulenes are largest and those of the polyenynes smallest with the polyenes having an intermediate value. The optical gap of the infinite cumulene is lowest (0.75 eV) and is associated with a low transition dipole moment for an excitation involving transfer of an electron between the two orthogonal conjugated pi-systems. The polyenynes have the largest optical gap (4.37 eV), with the magnitude being nearly independent of the chain length. This excitation involves charge transfer between the conjugated bonds in the terminal triple bond. Chain length and frequency dependence of alpha(ij) and gamma(ijkl) of these systems are also reported. The effect of a heteroatom on the polarizability and THG coefficients of acetylenic systems is also reported. It has been found that the presence of the heteroatom reduces the polarizability and THG coefficients of these systems, an effect opposite to that found in the polyenes and cyanine dyes. This result has been associated with the different nature of the charge transfer in the acetylenic systems.

The perovskite structure in Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3 can be stabilized by the addition of Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3 and PbTiO3.Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3 assists in lowering the sintering temperature and shifting the Curie temperature of ceramics while PbTiO3 helps to optimize the dielectric properties. The phase stability and dielectric properties of several compositions in the Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 ternary relaxor ferroelectric system were investigated for possible capacitor applications. The effect of calcining and sintering temperature on the stability of perovskite phase in PZN rich compositions was studied extensively as a function of composition. The boundary line separating perovskite and mixed phases was determined for compositions near PZN. Several compositions can be sintered below 1050°C. The dielectric properties of compositions near the mixed phase boundary showed strong dependence on the percentage of pyrochlore phase. Compositions with a dielectric constant of 12.500 at room temperature have been identified which meet Z5T and Y5U specifications for dielectric constant and tan δ.

Photophysical properties of the singlet and triplet states of the fullerenes, C60 and C70, have been investigated in toluene, benzene, hexane and ethanol solutions by pico- and nano-second laser flash photolysis techniques. Lifetimes, extinction coefficients, quantum efficiencies of the formation of the excited states and such properties have been determined. True triplettriplet absorption spectra of C60 and C70 are reported. C60, unlike C70, is found to undergo photoionization in ethanol solution giving solvated electrons.

Preparation and characterization of the fullerenes, C60 and C70, are described in detail, including the design of the generators fabricated locally. The characterization techniques employed are UV-visible, IR, Raman and C-13 NMR spectroscopies, scanning as well as transmission electron microscopy and mass spectrometry. The electron energy level diagram of C60 as well as the one-electron reductions of C60 and C70 leading to various anions are discussed. Electronic absorption spectra of C60- and C60(2-) are reported. Phase transitions from the plastic to the crystalline states of C60 and C70 are examined. Based on a C-13 NMR study in a mixture of nematic liquid crystals, it has been demonstrated that C60 retains its extraordinary symmetry in solution phase as well. Interaction of C60 and C70 with strong electron-donor molecules has been investigated employing cyclic voltammetry. Superconductivity of K(x)C60 has been studied by non-resonant microwave absorption; Na(x)C60 as well as K(c)C70 are shown to be non-superconducting. Doping C60 with iodine does not make it superconducting. Interaction of C60 with SbCl5 and liquid Br2 gives rise to halogenated products.

Rare-earth nickelates Ln(2)BaNi(1-x)Cu(2)O(5), Ln = Nd and Dy, and Dy2-xYxBaNiO5 have been synthesized in order to investigate the effect of substitution of Ni by Cu and Dy by nonmagnetic Y on the magnetic properties of the nickelates. In Ln(2)BaNi(1-x)Cu(x)O(5), the nickelate structure (x=0.0) changes to the cuprate structure (x=1.0) at a specific composition (x=0.3). The Neel temperature of Nd2BaNi1-xCuxO5 decreases continuously with increase in x upto x=0.3 (T-N = 18K); when x > 0.3, the materials are paramagnetic down to 20K. The mu(eff) in Nd2BaNi1-xCxO5 essentially corresponds to the contribution of the Nd ions. In Dy2-xYxBaNiO5, the Neel temperature decreases from 40K when x=0.0 to 24K when x=1.5. The compositions with 1.5 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 2 (including the x=1.95 composition) are paramagnetic down to 20K, unlike Y2BaNiO5 (x=2.0) which exhibits a T-N of 370K. Even the smallest concentration of paramagnetic Dy seems to destroy the antiferromagnetic Ni-O-Ni chains in Y2BaNiO5.

Strontium-doped lanthanum chromites, La1−xSrxCrO3, have been synthesised to investigate the effect of strontium doping on the stability and physico-chemical characteristics of the perovskite LaCrO3. Both microscopic and X-ray examinations show that the materials exist as single phase perovskite structure for all compositions up to 50 mole% strontium substitution. The materials have been further characterized by infrared and electron paramagnetic resonance spectra. These materials show a good sinterability even in air at 1773 K. Electrical conductivity of thse perovskites has been measured as a function of temperature. Electrical conductivity has been found to be a maximum at x=0.2. The observed electrical and magnetic properties are consistent with activated polaron transport as the mechanism for electrical conduction in these materials.

Anatase titania nanotubes (TNTs) have been synthesized from P25 TiO2 powder by alkali hydrothermal method followed by post annealing. The microstructure analysis by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed the formation of anatase nanotubes with a diameter of 9-10 nm. These NTs are used to make photo anode in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Layer by layer deposition with curing of each layer at 350 C is employed to realize films of desired thickness. The performance of these cells is studied using photovoltaic measurements. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is used to quantitatively analyze the effect of thickness on the performance of these cells. These studies revealed that the thickness of TiO2 has a pronounced impact on the cell performance and the optimum thickness lies in the range of 10-14 mu m. In comparison to dye solar cells made of P25, TNTs based cells exhibit an improved open circuit voltage and fill factor (FF) due to an increased electron lifetime, as revealed by EIS analysis. The fine-particle NASICON family of materials, MZr2P3O12(where M = Na, K, ½Ca and ¼Zr) and NbZrP3O12, have been prepared by the combustion of aqueous heterogeneous mixtures of stoichiometric amounts of metal nitrate, zirconyl nitrate, niobium phosphate, diammonium hydrogen phosphate, ammonium perchlorate and carbohydrazide (CH) at 400 °C. The formation of NASICON materials was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), IR, solid-state (31P) NMR spectroscopy and thermal expansion coefficient measurements. The combustion-synthesized NASICON powders have an average agglomerate size of 913 µm with a specific surface area varying from 8 to 28 m2 g1. The powders pelletized and sintered in the range 11001200 °C for 5 h achieved 9597% theoretical density and showed fine-grain microstructure. The coefficient of thermal expansion of a sintered compact was measured up to 500 °C and ranged from 1.5 × 106°C1 to 1.0 × 106°C1 depending on the composition.
