Juan Antonio Fernández (1752-1814), el epigrafista accidental

En 1789, a instancias del prior Antonio Tavira, Juan Antonio Fernández se trasladó a Uclés (Cuenca) para llevar a cabo la ordenación y clasificación del archivo de la Orden de Santiago. Allí supo de la existencia de las ruinas romanas de Cabeza del Griego (Segobriga) y llevó a cabo con Tavira las primeras excavaciones. Durante ese tiempo, descubrieron un buen número de inscripciones romanas y Juan Antonio Fernández llevó a cabo la primera recopilación de las inscripciones de Segobriga. Después de su muerte en 1814, muchos de los documentos fueron comprados por la Real Academia de la Historia.

Requests to stop commons, 1775

Requests from Tutors John Wadsworth, Caleb Gannett, and Stephen Hall to the Steward, dated March 20, March 25, and April 4, 1775, to stop the commons of students. Reasons given include illness and absence from the College.

Quarter bill book for the Classes of 1776-1779, 1775

Three folded sheets containing quarter bill tallies for the Classes of 1776-1779 for the quarters ending on March 1775, June 1775, and September 1775, with totals for all students in each category also provided.

Minutes of the Proceedings of the Board of Overseers of Harvard College, 1775-1776

This is a small, paper-bound "waste book" containing minutes taken by the Secretary pro tempore, Samuel Cooke, at meetings held on the following dates: July 31, 1775; August 8, 1775; August 22, 1775; September 5, 1775; October 3, 1775; October 23, 1775 (fragmentary); November 5, 1775; April 16, 1776; and April 23, 1776. Because these meetings took place during the American Revolutionary War, they were held in the "Council chamber at Watertown."

On verso: S. Hastings, S. Kendal. This report outlines the glass needed for College buildings in the mid-18th century. Estimates include windows for Hollis, Massachusetts, and Harvard Halls and an unspecified College House.

Orders for expenditures for University Hall, 15 May 1813-13 May 1814

Contains one sewn volume of work orders for the construction of University Hall in the hand of Loammi Baldwin between May 1813 and May 1814. The volume contains 46 completed work orders for supplies and services for "building the new Dining Halls and Chapel in Cambridge" payable to Hon. John Davis, Harvard treasurer. Completed work orders are noted with the name of the payee, amount paid, and the supplies or services fulfilled. Work orders 47 through 60 in the volume are unused.

Letter from George Gardner Lee to Loammi Baldwin, 10 January 1814

Lee, a Boston merchant who often represented the city as deputy in the Massachusetts General Court, asks Baldwin if the laborers laying the bricks and stone for University Hall could be loaned for a few days to work on the construction of the South meeting house [New South Church].
