--------------------ABSTRACT: Several studies suggest that psychosocial factors (level of job satisfaction, education level, and the pain catastrophizing and fear-avoidance beliefs) have an important role as factors associated with development of chronicity LBP (Krisma & van Tulder, 2007 ; Kwon et al., 2006, Leclerc et al. 2009; Pincus, Santos, Breen, Burton and Underwood., 2008.) Objective: To assess the association between the variables of pain catastrophizing, fear-avoidance beliefs, pain, intensity pain and self-reported functional disability in a sample of people with chronic LBP. Methodology: The study consisted of 160 employees of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia and Centro de Bem Estar Social of Arronches. Integrated sample of 133 employees who agreed to respond to different assessment tools used (Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMQ), "Questionnaire Survey of Characterization and Risk Factors and Impact associated with the DCL," "Pain Catastrophing Scale(PCS) and "Fear-Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire (FABQ). Data collection took place between August and November 2010. Results: In this study, it was found that 39.1% of subjects reported no specific chronic LBP. For the self-reported functional disability, we obtained a medium score of 5.87 on the RMQ. We obtained a value of rs = 0.425, p <0.01, for the association between catastrophizing in pain and disability. Regarding the association between fear-avoidance beliefs, sub-scale physical activity and disability, was obtained a value of rs = 0.074 and for the association between fear-avoidance beliefs, sub-scale work and disability, there was rs = 0.422, p <0.01. Regarding the association between perceived pain intensity and pain disability present we obtained a value rs = 0.177 association between pain and perceived disability in 2009 and measured an outcome of rs = 0.291, p <0.05.Conclusion: That there is a moderate association between catastrophizing and pain self-reported functional disability, and also between fear-avoidance beliefs in relation to employment and self-reported functional disability. Regarding the association between pain and perceived disability in 2009 self-reported the association is low. Not being an association between earavoidance beliefs for physical activity and self-reported functional disability, or for the association between perception of current pain intensity and disability. This research contributed so, to disclose relevant factors evaluate in individuals with chronic LBP, its modification may help to prevent higher levels of functional disability or improve the effectiveness of treatment used.

A associação entre a intensidade da dor e a incapacidade parece ter um papel menos importante demonstrando associações baixas.--------------------------ABSTRACT: Chronic low back pain is a health condition whose prevalence has increased in recent decades. It is a condition that can be quite disabling for the individual and therefore have important social and economic impact on society. It is a complex phenomenon, multifactorial and poorly studied in the Portuguese population. Objective: To study the association between pain catastrophizing, fear avoidance beliefs, pain, pain intensity and self-reported functional disability in individuals with chronic low back pain. Methods: Observational analytical cross sectional study of a sample of 38 individuals with chronic low back pain, selected from a population of 186 workers at a local health unit. Data collection was performed through four assessment instruments: questionnaire characterization, evaluation of risk factors and impact associated to chronic low back pain, questionnaire Roland and Morris disability, pain catastrophizing scale and fear avoidance beliefs questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics for the distribution of frequencies and measures of central tendency to analyze the prevalence and characteristics of the sample and inferential statistics to study the relationships between variables by testing for Spearman nonparametric correlation. Results: The pain catastrophizing variable had a correlation value rs= 0,473, p<0,01 with the self-reported disability, the variable of fear avoidance belief of pain related to the work achived a correlation value with the self-reported disability, rs = 0.462 p <0.01, current pain intensity and in the previous year obtained values of correlation with self-reported disability rs = 0.327 and rs = 0.359 respectively for values of p <0.05 .Conclusion: The psychosocial variables of pain catastrophizing and fear avoidance belief of pain related to the work had a moderate association with disability in individuals with chronic low back pain. The association between pain intensity and disability seems to have a less important role demonstrating low associations.

The aims of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a treatment program compared with conventional treatment (post hoots, ultrasound and massage), for the outcomes pain and functional ability in elderly with knee osteoarthritis. The sample was non-probability, and 20 patients have been selected that fulfilled the criteria for inclusion and who were randomly assigned to the two treatment groups, in group A and 11 in group B. All of the patients gave their informed consent. This is an experimental, randomized controlled trial (RCT) with blinded assessment, of comparative design. This study protocol program was carry out in 15 individual treatment sessions, 3x per week. The therapeutic program made by group A consisted of the performance of conservative treatment: 20 minutes of hot packs, 5 minutes of ultrasound (continuous, 1.5 W/cm2) and 10 minutes of massage plus the exercise protocol therapy consisted of: isometric exercises of quadriceps contractions, muscle strengthening for knee and aerobic training. This exercise protocol was progressing every week in terms of its intensity. The users in Group B, only made the conservative treatment (such as in group A). In this study there were evaluated the pain and functional capacity, assessed by questionnaire knee Injury Osteoarthritis Outcome Score. For comparison between groups were used Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests. The results revealed that in group B was that it obtained better results, although they are not statistical significance. The group B show a decrease in pain of 17.33 compared to -3.00 in group A (p = 0.101), and improved capacity functional of 13.00, keeping in group A (0.00) (p = 0.080). However, the differences are not statistically significant. These results show that there are not statistically significant in both treatments, but more studies are needed.

The project started in 2009 with the support of DAAD in Germany and CRUP in Portugal under the “Collaborative German-Portuguese University Actions” programme. One central goal is the further development of a theory of technology assessment applied to robotics and autonomous systems in general that reflects in its methodology the changing conditions of knowledge production in modern societies and the emergence of new robotic technologies and of associated disruptive changes. Relevant topics here are handling broadened future horizons and new clusters of science and technology (medicine, engineering, interfaces, industrial automation, micro-devices, security and safety), as well as new governance structures in policy decision making concerning research and development (R

DNA amplification by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was applied in the investigation of the presence of Leishmania (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae) parasites in single phlebotomine sandflies. Three phlebotomine/parasite pairs were used: Lutzomyia longipalpis/Leishmania chagasi, Lutzomyia migonei/Leishmania amazonensis and Lutzomyia migonei/Leishmania braziliensis, all of them incriminated in the transmission of visceral or cutaneous leishmaniasis. DNA extraction was performed with whole insects, with no need of previous digestive tract dissection or pooling specimens. The presence of either mouse blood in the digestive tract of the sandflies or the digestive tract itself did not interfere in the PCR. Infection by as few as 10 Leishmania sp. per individual were sufficient for DNA amplification with genus-specific primers. Using primers for L. braziliensis and L. mexicana complexes, respectively, it was possible to discriminate between L. braziliensis and L. amazonensis in experimentally infected vectors (L. migonei).

ISCAP’s Information Systems Department is composed of about twenty teachers who have, for several years, been using an e-learning environment (Moodle) combined with traditional assessment. A new e-assessment strategy was implemented recently in order to evaluate a practical topic, the use of spreadsheets to solve management problems. This topic is common to several courses of different undergraduate degree programs. Being e-assessment an outstanding task regarding theoretical topics, it becomes even more challenging when the topics under evaluation are practical. In order to understand the implications of this new type of assessment from the viewpoint of the students, questionnaires and interviews were undertaken. In this paper the analysis of the questionnaires are presented and discussed.

Barra de Guaratiba is a coastal area of the city of Rio de Janeiro where American visceral leishmaniasis (AVL) is endemic. Although control measures including killing of dogs and use of insecticides have been applied at this locality, the canine seroprevalence remains at 25% and during 1995 and 1997 eight autochthonous human cases were notified. In order to evaluate factors related to the increase of the risk for Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi infection in dogs we have screened 365 dogs by anti-Leishmania immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT) and captured sandflies in the domestic and peridomestic environment. Some variables related to the infection were assessed by uni- and multivariate analysis. The distance of the residence from the forest border, its altitude and the presence of the opossum Didelphis marsupialis in the backyard, were found predictor factors for L. (L.) chagasi infection in dogs in Barra de Guaratiba. The presence of Lutzomyia longipalpis in the peridomestic environment indicates the possibility of appearence of new human cases. Our data also suggest the presence of a sylvatic enzootic cycle at this locality.

The use of unmanned marine robotic vehicles in bathymetric surveys is discussed. This paper presents recent results in autonomous bathymetric missions with the ROAZ autonomous surface vehicle. In particular, robotic surface vehicles such as ROAZ provide an efficient tool in risk assessment for shallow water environments and water land interface zones as the near surf zone in marine coast. ROAZ is an ocean capable catamaran for distinct oceanographic missions, and with the goal to fill the gap were other hydrographic surveys vehicles/systems are not compiled to operate, like very shallow water rivers and marine coastline surf zones. Therefore, the use of robotic systems for risk assessment is validated through several missions performed either in river scenario (in a very shallow water conditions) and in marine coastlines.

Structural robustness is an emergent concept related to the structural response to damage. At the present time, robustness is not well defined and much controversy still remains around this subject. Even if robustness has seen growing interest as a consequence of catastrophic consequences due to extreme events, the fact is that the concept can also be very useful when considered on more probable exposure scenarios such as deterioration, among others. This paper intends to be a contribution to the definition of structural robustness, especially in the analysis of reinforced concrete structures subjected to corrosion. To achieve this, first of all, several proposed robustness definitions and indicators and misunderstood concepts will be analyzed and compared. From this point and regarding a concept that could be applied to most type of structures and dam-age scenarios, a robustness definition is proposed. To illustrate the proposed concept, an example of corroded reinforced concrete structures will be analyzed using nonlinear analysis numerical methods based on a contin-uum strong discontinuities approach and isotropic damage models for concrete. Finally the robustness of the presented example will be assessed.

A rapid test based on an immunochromatography assay - Determine Syphilis TP (Abbott Lab.) for detecting specific antibodies to Treponema pallidum was evaluated against serum samples from patients with clinical, epidemiological and serological diagnosis of syphilis, patients with sexually transmitted disease other than syphilis, and individuals with negative serology for syphilis. The Determine test presented the sensitivity of 93.6%, specificity of 92.5%, and positive predictive value and negative predictive value of 95.2% and 93.7%, respectively. One serum sample from patient with recent latent syphilis showed a prozone reaction. Determine is a rapid assay, highly specific and easy to perform. This technique obviates the need of equipment and its diagnostic features demonstrate that it may be applicable as an alternative assay for syphilis screening under some emergency conditions or for patients living in remote localities.

Malaria regions of the Amazon basin have been characterized by difficult access and non-compliance of the patients to treatment. In an attempt to assess the schizonticide efficacy of chloroquine in a single dose of 600 mg, the authors realized a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 132 outpatients with vivax malaria. Patients were distributed into two groups: group CPLA, given chloroquine 600 mg (single dose) on the first day of treatment, and two doses of placebo on second and third days. Group CHLO, given chloroquine 600 mg on first day and 450 mg on second and third day. Geometric means of the parasite density during the follow-up was similar in both groups. No differences were observed in the parasitological cure between the two groups (p = 0.442). There was clinical and parasitological efficacy in treatment of patients given a single-dose of chloroquine. This suggests that its restricted use could be indicated in remote areas of Brazilian Amazon Region, nevertheless the inadequate response of three patients indicates the need for further studies.

Demonstration of cryptosporidiosis in Mayan Indians living around Lake Atitlan provided an opportunity to correlate infection with abdominal pain and/or diarrhea in different age groups of children. 94 subjects experiencing abdominal pain and/or diarrhea, between the ages of 2 and 13 were studied in towns around Lake Atitlan, Guatemala, over a two-year period. Cryptosporidium oocysts were found in the feces of 29% of children who presented with abdominal pain and 21% with diarrhea. Of the 60 infected subjects, 45% were experiencing abdominal pain and 33% diarrhea, 22% had abdominal pain and diarrhea. Both abdominal pain and diarrhea were significantly higher in children under 10 years of age and were most prevalent in the 6-9 year old age group but the correlation of symptoms to infection was not significantly different as the ages of the children increased. The high frequency of abdominal pain and/or diarrhea with infection in children was consistent with cryptosporidiosis, a disease considered as one of several common intestinal infections that produce these symptoms.
