In attempting to determine the nature of the enzyme system mediating the conversion of catechol to diphenylenedioxide 2,3-quinone, in Tecoma leaves, further purification of the enzyme was undertaken. The crude enzyme from Tecoma leaves was processed further by protamine sulfate precipitation, positive adsorption on tricalcium phosphate gel, and elution and chromatography on DEAE-Sephadex. This procedure yielded a 120-fold purified enzyme which stoichiometrically converted catechol to diphenylenedioxide 2,3-quinone. The purity of the enzyme system was assessed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The approximate molecular weight of the enzyme was assessed as 200,000 by gel filtration on Sephadex G-150. The enzyme functioned optimally at pH 7.1 and at 35 °C. The Km for catechol was determined as 4 × 10−4 Image . The enzyme did not oxidize o-dihydric phenols other than catechol and it did not exhibit any activity toward monohydric and trihydric phenols and flavonoids. Copper-chelating agents did not inhibit the enzyme activity. Copper could not be detected in the purified enzyme preparations. The purified enzyme was not affected by extensive dialysis against copper-complexing agents. It did not show any peroxidase activity and it was not inhibited by catalase. Hydrogen peroxide formation could not be detected during the catalytic reaction. The enzymatic conversion of catechol to diphenylenedioxide 2,3-quinone by the purified Tecoma leaf enzyme was suppressed by such reducing agents as GSH and cysteamine. The purified enzyme was not sensitive to carbon monoxide. It was not inhibited by thiol inhibitors. The Tecoma leaf was found to be localized in the soluble fraction of the cell. Treatment of the purified enzyme with acid, alkali, and urea led to the progressive denaturation of the enzyme.

1,6-hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) were copolymerized in different weight ratios using UV light induced photo-polymerization to give poly(HDDA-co-MMA). Differential scanning calorimetry shows that copolymer was formed. The thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetric studies with different heating rates were carried out on these copolymers to understand the nature of degradation and to determine its kinetics. Different kinetic models were adopted to evaluate various parameters like the activation energy, the order, and the frequency factor. These analyses are important to study the binder removal from 3D-shaped ceramic objects made by techniques like Solid free form fabrication. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The underpinning logic of value co-creation in service logic is analysed. It is observed that three of the ten foundational premises of the so-called service-dominant logic are problematic and do not support an understanding of value-co-creation and creation that is meaningful for theoretical development and decision making in business and marketing practice. Without a thorough understanding of the interaction concept, the locus and nature of value co-creation cannot be identified. Based on the analysis in the present article it is observed that a unique contribution of a service perspective on business (service logic) is not that customers always are co-creators of value, but that under certain circumstances the service provider gets opportunities to co-create value together with its customers. Finally, the three problematic premises are reformulated accordingly.

Electrochemical oxidation of borohydride is studied on nanosized rhodium, iridium, and bimetallic rhodium-iridium catalysts supported onto Vulcan XC72R carbon. The catalysts are characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy in conjunction with cyclic voltammetry and polarization studies. The studies reveal that a 20 wt % bimetallic Rh-Ir catalyst supported onto carbon (Rh-Ir/C) is quite effective for the oxidation of borohydride. Direct borohydride fuel cell with Rh-Ir/C as the anode catalyst and Pt/C as the cathode catalyst exhibits a peak power density of 270 mW/cm(2) at a load current density of 290 mA/cm(2) as against 200 mW/cm(2) at 225 mA/cm(2) for Rh/C and 140 mW/cm(2) at 165 mA/cm(2) for Ir/C while operating at 80 degrees C. The synergistic catalytic activity for the bimetallic Rh-Ir nanoparticles toward borohydride oxidation is corroborated by density-functional theory calculations using electron-localization function. The three-phase equilibrium between alloy, spinel solid solution and alpha -Al sub 2 O sub 3 in the Fe--Co--Al--O system at 1873k was fully characterized as a function of alloy composition using both experimental and computational methods. The equilibrium oxygen content of the liquid alloy was measured by suction sampling and inert gas fusion analysis. The O potential corresponding to the three-phase equilibrium was determined by emf measurements on a solid state galvanic cell incorporating (Y sub 2 O sub 3 )ThO sub 2 as the solid electrolyte and Cr + Cr sub 2 O sub 3 as the reference electrode. The equilibrium composition of the spinel phase formed at the interface between the alloy and alumina crucible was measured by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). The experimental results were compared with the values computed using a thermodynamic model. The model used values for standard Gibbs energies of formation of pure end-member spinels and Gibbs energies of solution of gaseous O in liquid Fe and cobalt available in the literature. The activity--composition relationship in the spinel solid solution was computed using a cation distribution model. The variation of the activity coefficient of O with alloy composition in the Fe--Co--O system was estimated using both the quasichemical model of Jacob and Alcock and Wagner's model along with the correlations of Chiang and Chang and Kuo and Chang. The computed results of spinel composition and O potential are in excellent agreement with the experimental data. Graphs. 29 ref.--AA

Oxidation of representative halophenols and halonaphthols by peroxidisulphate has been examined. The influence of metallic ions, viz. Cu2+, Fe3+, Ag+, on the above reaction has been studied. Cu2+ ion-catalyzed oxidation gives halo-1, 4-quinones in excellent yield. Potassium bis(biureto)cuprate(III) complex also oxidises halophenols to halo-1, 4-quinones.

Thermal degradation of copolyurethanes based on hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) and poly(12-hydroxy stearic acid-co-TMP) ester polyol (PEP) with varying compositions has been studied by thermo-gravimetric and pyrolysis-GC techniques. The copolyurethanes were found to decompose in multiple stages and the kinetic parameters were found to be dependent on the method of their evaluation. The activation energy for the initial stage of decomposition was found to increase, and for the main stage decreases with the increase in PEP content. The pyrolysis-GC studies on the ammonium perchlorate filled copolyurethanes (solid propellants) showed that the major products during the pyrolysis were C-2, C-3 hydrocarbons and butadiene. The amount of C-2 fraction in the pyrolyslate increased with solid loading, as well as with the HTPB content in the copolyurethanes. A linear relationship apparently exists between the amount of C-2 fraction and the burn rates of the solid propellants. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

In 1-cyclo-hexyl-6,6,8a-trimethyl-3a,6,7,8a-tetra-hydro-1H-1-benzofuro[2,3-b]pyrrole-2,4(3H,5H)-dione, C19H27NO3, (I), and the isomorphous compounds 6,6,8a-trimethyl-1-phenyl-3a,6,7,8a-tetra-hydro-1H-1-benzofuro[2,3-b]pyrrole-2,4(3H,5H)-dione, C19H21NO3, (II), and 6,6,8a-trimethyl-1-(3-pyridyl)-3a,6,7,8a-tetra-hydro-1H-1-benzofuro[2,3-b]pyrrole-2,4(3H,5H)-dione, C18H20N2O3, (III), the tetra-hydro-benzo-dihydro-furo-pyrrolidine ring systems are folded at the cis junction of the five-membered rings, giving rise to a non-planar shape of the tricyclic cores. The dihydro-furan and pyrrolidine rings in (I) are puckered and adopt an envelope conformation. The cyclo-hexene rings adopt a half-chair conformation in all the mol-ecules, while the substituent N-cyclo-hexyl ring in (I) assumes a chair form. Short intra-molecular C-HcO contacts form S(5) and S(6) motifs. The isomorphous compounds (II) and (III) are effectively isostructural, and aggregate into chains via inter-molecular C-HcO hydrogen bonds.
