Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) and acetabular retroversion represent distinct acetabular pathomorphologies. Both are associated with alterations in pelvic morphology. In cases where direct radiographic assessment of the acetabulum is difficult or impossible or in mixed cases of DDH and retroversion, additional indirect pelvimetric parameters would help identify the major underlying structural abnormality.

Purpose : To angiographically evaluate infrapopliteal arterial lesion morphology in a consecutive series of patients presenting with critical limb ischemia (CLI) and undergoing infrapopliteal angioplasty. Methods : A prospective analysis was undertaken of a consecutive series of CLI patients undergoing endovascular therapy in a tertiary referral center in the year 2011. Morphological assessment of baseline angiograms obtained prior to revascularization included lesion length, assessment of calcification using a semi-quantitative scoring system, and reference vessel diameter (RVD) measurement. Delta RVDs were assessed subtracting distal RVDs from proximal RVDs. A total of 197 infrapopliteal lesions in 105 CLI patients (n=106 limbs) were assessed. Of these, 136 lesions were treated by endovascular means. Results : The average length of treated lesions was 87.1±43.8 mm in stenoses and 124.0±78.3 mm in chronic occlusions (p<0.001). Mean RVD proximal to the lesions was 1.88 mm whereas it was 1.66 mm distal to the lesions (p≤0.03). Mean arterial calcification was 1.15. Conclusion : This prospective angiographic series underlines the complex nature and extensive longitudinal involvement of infrapopliteal lesions in CLI patients. These findings should be taken into consideration for anti-restenosis concepts in this challenging subgroup of peripheral artery disease patients.

In this paper we present a new population-based implant design methodology, which advances the state-of-the-art approaches by combining shape and bone quality information into the design strategy. The method may enhance the mechanical stability of the fixation and reduces the intra-operative in-plane bending which might impede the functionality of the locking mechanism. The computational method is presented for the case of mandibular locking fixation plates, where the mandibular angle and the bone quality at screw locations are taken into account. The method automatically derives the mandibular angle and the bone thickness and intensity values at the path of every screw from a set of computed tomography images. An optimization strategy is then used to optimize the two parameters of plate angle and screw position. The method was applied to two populations of different genders. Results for the new design are presented along with a comparison with a commercially available mandibular locking fixation plate (MODUS(®) TriLock(®) 2.0/2.3/2.5, Medartis AG, Basel, Switzerland). The proposed designs resulted in a statistically significant improvement in the available bone thickness when compared to the standard plate. There is a higher probability that the proposed implants cover areas of thicker cortical bone without compromising the bone mineral density around the screws. The obtained results allowed us to conclude that an angle and screw separation of 129° and 9 mm for females and 121° and 10 mm for males are more suitable designs than the commercially available 120° and 9 mm.

Biodegradable nanoparticles are at the forefront of drug delivery research as they provide numerous advantages over traditional drug delivery methods. An important factor affecting the ability of nanoparticles to circulate within the blood stream and interact with cells is their morphology. In this study a novel processing method, confined impinging jet mixing, was used to form poly (lactic acid) nanoparticles through a solvent-diffusion process with Pluronic F-127 being used as a stabilizing agent. This study focused on the effects of Reynolds number (flow rate), surfactant presence in mixing, and polymer concentration on the morphology of poly (lactic acid) nanoparticles. In addition to looking at the parameters affecting poly (lactic acid) morphology, this study attempted to improve nanoparticle isolation and purification methods to increase nanoparticle yield and ensure specific morphologies were not being excluded during isolation and purification. The isolation and purification methods used in this study were centrifugation and a stir cell. This study successfully produced particles having pyramidal and cubic morphologies. Despite successful production of these morphologies the yield of non-spherical particles was very low, additionally great variability existed between redundant trails. Surfactant was determined to be very important for the stabilization of nanoparticles in solution but appears to be unnecessary for the formation of nanoparticles. Isolation and purification methods that produce a high yield of surfactant free particles have still not been perfected and additional testing will be necessary for improvement.¿
