Collections made with 150 l sampling bottles and BR 113/140 nets, as well as direct counts from the Mir submersible are used to analyze vertical distribution of total biomass of meso- and macroplankton and biomass distributions of their main component groups in the central oligotrophic regions of the North Pacific. Biomass of mesoplankton in the upper 200 m layer ranges from 3.1 to 8.6 g/m**2, but sometimes it increases up to as much as 98 g/m**2 in local population explosions of salps. Jellies predominate in macroplankton at depths of up to 2-3 km, contributing 97-98% of live weight and 30-70% of biomass as organic carbon. In importance they are followed by micronecton fishes (up to 40% of organic carbon). Contributions of other groups countable from the submersible were negligible. Distributions of species at particular stations are discussed.

Results of a lithological study of bottom sediments in the Syrian region of the Mediterranean Sea during Cruise 27 of R/V Vityaz (1993) are reported. Suspended sediment discharge of the Nile River are of the greatest importance for terrigenous sedimentation in the SE part of the Mediterranean Sea, especially in deep-sea areas. Suspended load entering from the Syrian catchment area plays an important role in formation of recent shelf and slope deposits. Supply of aerosols from Syrian and Arabian deserts was distinguished by the patchiness of surface distribution of quartz. During Late Quaternary accumulation of terrigenous material supplied from both the Syrian and the Nile drainage areas was irregular. Sedimentation was remarkably enhanced during sapropel formation 7000-9000 years BP.

A research was carried out along a transect from the Yamal Peninsula coast towards the outer shelf of the southwestern the Kara Sea in September 2007. 130 phytoplankton species were identified, among which 63 were found in the area for the first time. Total phytoplankton abundance varied from of 0.2 x10**9 to 11.3x10**9 cells/m**2, while biomass from 43 to 1057 mgC/m**2. A well pronounced cross-shelf zoning in phytoplankton communities was ascertained. The inner shelf zone about 30 km wide with depths down to 30 meters was characterized by predominance of diatoms (up to 80% of total algal abundance and biomass). The second group by value was dinoflagellates. Seaward in the area of depth increase from 30 to 140 m, the zone of the Yamal Current was located, which was 40 km wide and notable for its active water dynamics. Total abundance in the zone was maximal for the entire investigated area: up to 11.3x10**9 cells/m**2. Autotrophic flagellates were the leading group in phytoplankton, their share in total abundance reached 56-82%. Further than 70 km from the shore, the outer shelf zone was found with the water column rigidly stratified. The highest for the whole area phytoplankton biomass was identified here (up to 1.06 gC/m**2), 80% of which concentrated above the halocline. Diatoms dominated in phytoplankton abundance (up to 92%) and biomass (up to 90%) that resulted from mass development of two species: Chaetoceros diadema and Leptocylindrus danicus.

By analogy with the present-day ocean, primary productivity of paleoceans can be reconstructed using calculations based on content of organic carbon in sediments and their accumulation rates. Results of calculations based on published data show that primary productivity of organic carbon, mass of phosphorus involved in the process, and content of phosphorus in ocean waters were relatively stable during Cenozoic and Late Mesozoic. Prior to precipitation on the seafloor together with biogenic detritus, dissolved phosphorus could repeatedly be involved in the biogeochemical cycle. Therefore, only less than 0.1% of phosphorus is retained in bottom sediments. Bulk phosphorus accumulation rate in ocean sediments is partly consistent with calculated primary productivity. Some epochs of phosphate accumulation also coincide with maxima of primary productivity and minima of the fossilization coefficient of organic carbon. The latter fact can testify to episodes of acceleration of organic matter mineralization and release of phosphorus from sediments leading to increase in the phosphorus reserve in paleoceans and phosphate accumulation in some places.

The book is devoted to investigations of benthic fauna and geology of the Southern Atlantic Ocean. These works have been carried out in terms of exploring biological structure of the ocean and are of great importance for development of this fundamental problem. They are based on material collected during Cruise 43 of R/V Akademik Kurchatov in 1985-1986 and Cruise 43 of R/V Dmitry Mendeleev in 1989. Problems of quantitative distribution, group composition and trophic structure of benthos in the Southern Scotia Sea, along the east-west Transatlantic section along 31°30'S, and offshore Namibia in the area of the Benguela upwelling are under consideration in the book. Authors present new data on fauna of several groups of deep-sea bottom animals and their zoogeography. Much attention is paid to analysis of morphological structure of the Scotia Sea floor considered in terms of plate tectonics. Bottom sediments along the Transatlantic section and facial variation of sediments in the area of South Shetland Islands and of the continental margin of Namibia are under consideration.
