Distribution of K-Ar age marks in Pacific bottom sediments is shown on the base of large analytical material. Dependence of K-Ar age marks on abundance of potassium-bearing authigenic diagenetic minerals (glauconite, phillipsite) widely spread in the studied part of the World Oceans.

Current understanding of rare earth element (REE) geochemistry in the ocean is given in the book. Chemical properties determining REE migration ability in natural processes, sources of REE in the ocean, behavior of REE in river-sea mixing zones, fractionation of dissolved and particulate REE in ocean waters under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, distribution of REE in terrigenous, authigenic, hydrothermal and biogenic sediment components (clay, bone detritus, barite, phillipsite, Fe- and Mn-oxyhydroxides, Fe-Ca hydroxophosphate, diatoms and foraminiferas) are under consideration.

The book summarizes data on distribution and composition of sedimentary material suspended in waters of the Atlantic Ocean and its seas. Results of observations of Soviet and foreign expeditions are given. Distribution of suspended matter in sections across the ocean, as well as in the most studied seas are shown. New data on grain size, mineral and chemical composition of suspended matter are published. Summary of history of investigation of bottom sediments from the Atlantic Ocean from the first scientific cruises to the present is done. A brief description of sediment types in the ocean and a detailed description of Mediterranean Sea sediments are given.

Distribution of reduced sulfur forms in vertical sediment sections in deep-sea basins of the Atlantic Ocean is under study. Presence of weak sulfate reduction process resulted from low concentrations of reactive organic matter and differing by characteristic features of the initial stage of development. Interpretation of results is given on the base of consideration of dynamic redox equilibrium in the system: reduced sulfur - dissolved oxygen.

In pursuance of previous studies water samples were taken in the Atlantic and Mediterranean during the 12th, 14th and 15th cruises of RV Mikhail Lomonosov in 1962-1964 to determine total and particulate organic carbon and permanganate oxidizability. Preliminary processing of the water samples was carried out in the normal manner in the on-board laboratory immediately after they had been taken: destruction of bicarbonates and carbonates by precise addition of acid (by alkalinity) and evaporation to dryness at 50-60°C. It is quite probable that the corresponding volatile fraction of organic matter is lost under these conditions. In discussion it was demonstrated that it may now be assumed that the carbon of the volatile fraction averages approximately 15% of total carbon, i.e., 15% of the sum of organic carbon of the volatile and nonvolatile fractions. Oxidizability was determined in all samples in the on-board laboratory.
