The Petrova and Trgovska Gora Mts. (Gora=Mountain) are Variscan basement units incorporated into the northwestern Dinarides during the Alpine orogeny. They host numerous siderite-quartz-polysulphide, siderite-chalcopyrite, siderite-galena and barite veins, as well as stratabound hydrothermal-replacement ankerite bodies within carbonates in non-metamorphosed, flysch-like Permo-Carboniferous sequences. The deposits have been mined for Cu, Pb, Ag and Fe ores since Medieval times. Fluid inclusion studies of quartz from siderite-polysulphide-quartz and barite veins of both regions have shown the presence of primary aqueous NaCl-CaCl(2)+/- MgCl(2)-H(2)O +/- CO(2) inclusions. The quartz-sulphide stage of both regions show variable salinities; 2.7-26.2 wt% NaCl eq. for the Trgovska Gora region and 3.4-23.4 wt% NaCl eq. for the Petrova gora region, and similar homogenisation temperatures (100-230A degrees C). Finally, barite is precipitated from low salinity-low temperature solutions (3.7-15.8 wt % NaCl equ. and 115-145A degrees C). P-t conditions estimated via isochore construction yield formation temperatures between 180-250A degrees C for the quartz-sulphide stage and 160-180A degrees C for the barite stage, using a maximum lithostatic pressure of 1 kbar (cc. 3 km of overburden). The sulphur isotope composition of barite from both deposits indicates the involvement of Permian seawater in ore fluids. This is supported by the elevated bromium content of the fluid inclusion leachates (120-660 ppm in quartz, 420-960 ppm in barite) with respect to the seawater, indicating evaporated seawater as the major portion of the ore-forming fluids. Variable sulphur isotope compositions of galena, pyrite and chalcopyrite, between -3.2 and +2.7aEuro degrees, are interpreted as a product of incomplete thermal reduction of the Permian marine sulphate mixed with organically- and pyrite-bound sulphur from the host sedimentary rocks. Ore-forming fluids are interpreted as deep-circulating fluids derived primarily from evaporated Permian seawater and later modified by interaction with the Variscan basement rocks. (40)Ar/(39)Ar data of the detrital mica from the host rocks yielded the Variscan age overprinted by an Early Permian tectonothermal event dated at 266-274 Ma. These ages are interpreted as those reflecting hydrothermal activity correlated with an incipient intracontinental rifting in the Tethyan domain. Nevertheless, 75 Ma recorded at a fine-grained sericite sample from the alteration zone is interpreted as a result of later resetting of white mica during Campanian opening/closure of the Sava back arc in the neighbouring Sava suture zone (Ustaszewski et al. 2008).

A modified magnesium hydrogen breath test, using end expiratory breath sampling, is described to investigate achlorhydria. The efficacy of this test in the diagnostic investigation of pernicious anaemia was compared with that of serum pepsinogen I. Twenty one patients with pernicious anaemia--that is, patients with achlorhydria--and 22 with healed duodenal ulcer and normal chlorhydria were studied. Magnesium hydrogen breath test, serum pepsinogen I, serum gastrin, and standard gastric acid secretory tests were performed in all subjects. The mean (SEM) hydrogen peak value was lower in patients with pernicious anaemia than in the duodenal ulcer group (21.7 (1.9) v 71.3 (5.2) ppm; p = 0.00005). The hydrogen peak value had a 95.2% sensitivity and a 100% specificity to detect pentagastrin resistant achlorhydria. Mean serum pepsinogen I concentrations were also significantly lower in patients with pernicious anaemia than in the duodenal ulcer group (10.7 (2.7) v 123.6 (11.8) micrograms/l p = 0.00005). Sensitivity and specificity to detect pernicious anaemia were both 100% for pepsinogen I. It is concluded that this modified magnesium hydrogen breath test is a simple, noninvasive, cost effective, and accurate method to assess achlorhydria and may be useful in the diagnostic investigation of patients with suspected pernicious anaemia.

Se presentan los resultados obtenidos para la determinación de ácidos grasos en una serie de muestras de tejidos subcutáneo y muscular, procedentes de canales de vacuno, por aplicación de la cromatografía en fase gaseosa, para los que se obtuvieron unos valores medios de 58.7% de ácidos saturados, 39.1 % de monoinsaturados y 2.7% de polinsaturados, en el tejido adiposo, y de 44.7% de saturados, 46.1% de monoinsaturados y 9.4% de polinsaturados, en el tejido muscular. Los contenidos de ácidos grasos trans muestran diferencias significativas entre ambos tejidos (medias del 7% de ácidos trans totales en grasa intramuscular y 10.5% en grasa de depósito). El C18: 1t presenta una distribución paralela a la del total de ácidos trans, mientras que para el C16: 1 trans se observa un comportamiento claramente diferente, ya que no se presentan estas diferencias significativas entre ambos tejidos. En cuanto a los factores estudiados que pueden influir en el contenido de isómeros trans, cabe destacar que la raza fue aquél que ofrecía más diferencias, mientras que entre los diversos orígenes (explotaciones ganaderas) y entre categorías de canal se presentaron menos diferencias en relación a los contenidos de estos isómeros. También es importante destacar que las correlaciones que se han observado entre los contenidos de ácidos trans y los totales de ácidos saturados, mono y polinsaturados presentan un signo contrario, según el tipo de tejido. Así, un aumento del % de ácidos trans va aparejado con un aumento de saturados y una disminución de polinsaturados en el tejido muscular, mientras que va aparejado con una disminución de saturados y un aumento de mono y polinsaturados en el tejido adiposo.

Introduction Discrepancies appear in studies comparing fat oxidation between men and women during exercise (1). Therefore, this study aimed to quantitatively describe and compare whole body fat oxidation kinetics between genders during exercise using a sinusoidal model (SIN) (2). Methods Twelve men and 11 women matched for age, body mass index (23.4±0.6 kg.m-2 and 21.5±0.8 kg.m-2, respectively) and aerobic fitness [maximal oxygen uptake ( ) (58.5±1.6 mL.kg FFM-1.min-1 and 55.3±2.0 mL.kg FFM-1.min-1, respectively) and power output ( ) per kilogram of fat-free mass (FFM)] performed submaximal incremental tests (Incr) with 5-min stages and 7.5% increment on a cycle ergometer. Respiratory and HR values were averaged over the last 2 minutes of each stage. All female study participants were eumenorrheic, reported regular menstrual cycles (28.6 ± 0.8 days) and were not taking oral contraceptives (OC) or other forms of exogenous ovarian hormones. Women were studied in the early follicular phase (FP) of their menstrual cycle (between days 3 and 8, where day 1 is the first day of menses). Fat oxidation rates were determined using indirect calorimetry and plotted as a function of exercise intensity. The SIN model (2), which includes three independent variables (dilatation, symmetry, translation), was used to mathematically describe fat oxidation kinetics and to determine the intensity (Fatmax) eliciting the maximal fat oxidation (MFO). Results During Incr, women exhibited greater fat oxidation rates from 35 to 85% , MFO (6.6 ± 0.9 vs. 4.5 ± 0.3 mgkg FFM-1min-1) and Fatmax (58.1 ± 1.9 vs. 50.0 ± 2.7% ) (P<0.05) than men. While men and women showed similar global shapes of fat oxidation kinetics in terms of dilatation and symmetry (P>0.05), the fat oxidation curve tended to be shifted towards higher exercise intensities in women (rightward translation, P=0.08). Conclusion These results showed that women, eumenorrheic, not taking OC and tested in FP, have a greater reliance on fat oxidation than men during submaximal exercise, but they also indicate that this greater fat oxidation is shifted towards higher exercise intensities in women compared with men. RESUME EN FRANÇAIS BUTS. Étudier les relations entre le diabète gestationnel (GDM) et le syndrome métabolique (MS), comme la résistance à l'insuline est une des caractéristiques des 'deux conditions. Analyser le dépistage du diabète dans le post-partum pour identifier les facteurs de risque associés au développement d'un diabète de type 2 ultérieur. MÉTHODES. Étude rétrospective de toutes les grossesses uniques diagnostiquées avec un diabète gestationnel à l'hôpital universitaire de Lausanne, pendant une durée de trois ans. La présence d'une obésité, d'une hypertension ou d'une dyslipidémie avant la grossesse définissent les composants du syndrome métabolique. RÉSULTATS. Sur 5788 grossesses, 159 patientes (2.7%) présentaient un diabète gestationnel. Des composants du syndrome métabolique étaient présents avant la grossesse chez 26% des patientes (n=37/144) : 84% (n=31/37) étaient obèses, 38% (n=14/37) présentaient une hypertension et 22% (n=8/37) une dyslipidémie. Le développement d'une hypertension gravidique était associé à l'obésité (OR=3.2, p=0.02) et à la dyslipidémie (OR=5.4, p=0.002). Septante-quatre patientes (47%) sont revenues pour l'HGPO dans le post-partum. Celle-ci était anormale chez 20 femmes (27%): 11 % (n=8) présentaient un diabète de type 2 et 16% (n=12) avaient une intolérance au glucose. Les facteurs de risque indépendants associés à une anomalie de la tolérance au glucose dans le post-partum étaient d'avoir plus de 2 valeurs anormales au test diagnostique durant la grossesse et présenter des composants du syndrome métabolique (OR=5.2, CI 1.8-23.2 et OR=5.3, CI 1.3-22.2). CONCLUSIONS. Dans un quart des grossesses avec un diabète gestationnel, des anomalies métaboliques précèdent l'apparition de l'intolérance au glucose. Ces patientes présentent un haut risque de développer un syndrome métabolique et un diabète de type 2 ultérieurement. Là où le dépistage du diabète gestationnel n'est pas systématique, les praticiens devraient être avertis de ces risques métaboliques chez les patiente se présentant avec une obésité, une hypertension ou une dyslipidémie, afin de mieux les diagnostiquer et surtout de mieux les suivre et traiter après leur grossesse.
