In order to determine geochemical compositions of Late Cenozoic Arctic seawater, oxide fractions were chemically separated from 15 samples of hand-picked ferromanganese micronodules (50-300 mu m). The success of the chemical separation is indicated by the fact that >97% of the Sr in the oxide fraction is seawater-derived. Rare-earth element (REE) abundances of the Arctic micronodule oxide fractions are much lower than those of bulk Fe-Mn nodules from other ocean basins of the world (e.g., 33 vs. 145 ppm Nd), but the Arctic oxides are enriched in Ce relative to Nd (Ce-N/Nd-N=2.2+/-0.5) and have convex-upward, shale-normalized REE patterns (Nd-N/Gd-N=0.61+/-0.06, Gd-N/Yb-N = 1.5+/-0.2, Nd-N/Yb-N = 0.9+/-0.2), typical of other hydrogenous and diagenetic marine Fe-Mn-oxides. Bulk sediment samples from the central Arctic Ocean have REE abundances and patterns that are characteristic of those of post-Archean shale. Non-detrital fractions (calcite + oxide coatings) of Recent Arctic foraminifera have REE abundances and patterns similar to those of Recent foraminifera from the Atlantic Ocean. Electron microprobe analyses (n=178) of transition elements in 29 Arctic Fe-Mn micronodules from five different stratigraphic intervals of Late Cenozoic sediment indicate that oxide accretion occurred as a result of hydrogenetic and diagenetic processes close to the sediment-seawater interface. Transition element ratios suggest that no oxide accretion occurred during transitions from oxic to suboxic diagenetic conditions. Only K is correlated with Si and Al, and ratios of these elements suggest that they are associated with illite or phillipsite. Ca and Mg are correlated with Mn, which indicates variable substitution of these elements from seawater into the manganate phase. The geochemical characteristics of Arctic Fe-Mn micronodules indicate that the REEs of the oxide fractions were ultimately derived from seawater. However, because of minute contributions of Sr from siliciclastic detritus during diagenesis or during the chemical leaching procedure, Sr isotope compositions of the oxide fractions cannot be used to trace temporal changes in the Sr-87/Sr-86 ratio of Arctic seawater or to improve the chronostratigraphy.

A total of 773 samples were analysed for dissolved manganese (Mn) in the Arctic Ocean aboard R.V. Polarstern during expedition ARK XXII/2 from 28 July until 07 October 2007 from Tromsø (Norway) to Bremerhaven. Concentrations of Mn were elevated in the surface layer with concentrations of up to 6 nM over the deep Basins and over 20 nM in the Laptev Sea. The general distribution of Mn through the water column is consistent with previous studies, but there are differences in the absolute concentrations that are most likely related to differences in sample area, sampling and filtration. The elevated concentrations of Mn in the surface layer are related to fresh water input. This was visible in the strong negative correlations observed between dissolved Mn and salinity. The correlation between Mn and salinity and the correlation between Mn and the quasi conservative trace water mass tracer PO4*, showed fluvial and melt water input and the Pacific and Atlantic origin of the surface waters. A large portion of the Mn delivered by the Arctic rivers is removed in the shelf seas and does not pass into the central basins. Most likely a benthic flux is at the origin of the elevated concentrations of Mn near the sediments in the Barents and Kara Seas. These elevated concentrations of Mn apparently affected the deep basins as well, as maxima in the concentrations of Mn were observed that corresponded with lowered transmission over the continental slope. A maximum in the concentration of Mn in the deep basin corresponded with anomalies in light transmission, potential temperature and dissolved iron, confirming the hydrothermal origin. The hydrothermal plume was observed throughout the Nansen Basin and over the deep Gakkel Ridge around 2500 m depth and a smaller plume was observed around 3200 m. The concentration of Mn at the Mn maximum around 2500 m depth decreased exponentially, consistent with a first order scavenging model. The concentrations of Mn were extremely low in the deep Makarov Basin (~0.05 nM) and slightly higher in the Eurasian Basin (~0.1 nM) outside the influence of the hydrothermal activity.

Ferromanganese concretions spread out on the bottom of the shallow northwest part of the Black Sea are mainly represented by Fe and Mn nodules on shells and substituted worm tubes. Element composition of these formations was measured by methods of chemical, atomic absorbtion, neutron activation, and ICP-MS analyses. It was established that Fe and Mn contents and Mn/Fe ratio in the concretions varied considerably and which controlled occurrence of several associated metals and minor elements; some of them have not been studied in Black Sea concretions before.

Behavior of molybdenum and manganese is studied in phosphorite samples from shelves, seamounts, and islands of the ocean. In shelf phosphorites molybdenum and manganese contents are 2-128 and 12-1915 ppm, respectively, while the Mo/Mn ratio varies from 0.004 to 4.5. Phosphorites from ocean seamounts impregnated with ferromanganese oxyhydroxides contain 0.84-14.5 ppm Mo and 0.1-17% Mn. The Mo/Mn ratio varies within 0.0008-0.004. Phosphate bearing ferromanganese crusts overlying seamount phosphorites contain 54-798 ppm Mo and 10-20% Mn; the Mo/Mn ratio varies within 0.002-0.005. Corresponding values for most island phosphorites are 0.44-11.2 ppm, 27-287 ppm, and 0.008-0.20. Phosphorites from reduced environment are characterized by relative enrichment in Mo and depletion in Mn, whereas the Mo/Mn ratio reaches maximum values. The ratio decreases with transition to suboxic and oxic conditions. Molybdenum content in recent shelf sediments is commonly higher than that in authigenic phosphorites from these sediments. Recent phosphorite nodules from the Namibian shelf become depleted in Mo and Mn during their lithification, but Pliocene-Pleistocene nodules of similar composition and origin from the same region are enriched in Mo and characterized by variable Mn content. Higher Mo contents in phosphate bearing ferromanganese crusts result from coprecipitation of Mo and Mn from seawater. Unweathered phosphorites on continents and phosphorites from ocean shelves are largely enriched in Mo with the Mo/Mn ratio varying from 0.01 to 1.0. This is an evidence of their formation in reduced conditions.

Carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions of authigenic carbonate nodules or layers reflect the diagenetic conditions at the time of nodule growth. The shallowest samples of carbonate nodules and dissolved inorganic carbon of pore water samples beneath the sulfate reduction zone (0-160 meters below seafloor [mbsf]) at Site 1165 have extremely negative d13C values (-50 per mil and -62 per mil, respectively). These negative d13C values indicate nodule formation in association with anaerobic methane oxidation coupled with sulfate reduction. The 34S of residual sulfate at Site 1165 shows only minor 34S enrichment (+6 per mil), even with complete sulfate reduction. This small degree of apparent 34S enrichment is due to extreme "open-system" sulfate reduction, with sulfate abundantly resupplied by diffusion from overlying seawater. Ten calcite nodules from Site 1165 contain minor quartz and feldspar and have d13C values ranging from -49.7 per mil to -8.2 per mil. The nodules with the most negative d13C values currently are at depths of 273 to 350 mbsf and must have precipitated from carbonate largely derived from subsurface anaerobic methane oxidation. The processes of sulfate reduction coupled with methane oxidation in sediments of Hole 1165B are indicated by characteristic concentration and isotopic (d34S and d13C) profiles of dissolved sulfate and bicarbonate. Three siderite nodules from Site 1166 contain feldspar and mica and one has significant carbonate-apatite. The siderite has d13C values ranging from -15.3 per mil to -7.6 per mil. These siderite nodules probably represent early diagenetic carbonate precipitation during microbial methanogenesis.

Phosphorite nodules collected during Cruise 8 of R/V Dmitry Mendeleev off the Peruvian coast are represented by three lithologic types: friable, compacted, and solid. As the nodules are progressively compacted, contents of phosphate components increase and of non-phosphate components decrease. Isotope composition of uranium in the friable nodules is the same as in ocean water, and diatoms contained in the nodules are represented by recent species indicating Late Quaternary age of the nodules.

Study of phosphorus distribution in grain size fractions of eupelagic clays showed high (up to 3%) content of P in Fe-Mn micronodules that can contain up to 20-30% of total P. Mineral P associated with Fe in ocean sediments is an analog of manganese in ocean sedimentogenesis. Sharp decrease of P contents in ocean Fe-Mn nodules compared to ones from seas results from decrease of Fe contents and partial neutralization of Fe activity by Mn.

Results of a study of phosphates collected on Pacific Ocean seamounts using some physicochemical methods are described. Particular attention is paid to isotopic studies of both phosphates and their accompanying features. Oxygen isotopic compositions in phosphates of different genetic types were compared. Possible hydrothermal origin of phosphates is considered, and probable conditions of their formation are determined.
