Purpose: Cup feeding is an alternative technique of infant feeding when the infant is not being breastfed. Healthcare providers should have experience with the cup feeding technique in order to feed safely an infant. Objectives: The aim of this study is to identify the practices and the feeding cup techniques currently being used by healthcare NICU professionals, and to explore the opinions and beliefs of health professionals regarding to feeding cup. Methods: Twelve NICU nursing assistant were interviewed. Results: Most of the professionals interviewed were able to properly execute the feeding cup technique. The main problem observed was the improper positioning of the cup while using the technique. Most of them were ‘pouring’ the milk into the infant’s mouth. Thus, the participants interviewed expressed doubts about the technique and denied having been trained for this procedure in routine work at NICU. Nevertheless, all the participants were interested to learn more about the technique. Conclusion: In general,, all the professionals interviewed were able to properly execute the feeding cup technique. The questions and concerns presented by the professionals reassure the need for research and educational activities in order to educate health professionals about the correct use of feeding cup technique to assure a safe alternative feeding for infants.

This study aimed to evaluate the potential for milk production (MP), lactation length (LL) and calving interval (CI), analyze the environmental component affecting these traits, and to estimate the heritability and repeatability for milk production in crossbreds of Murrah buffalo cows in the state of Alagoas, Brazil. Data was composed of 487 observations of MP from 136 lactations recorded between the years of 2000 and 2010. In the analysis of variance for PL, the fixed effects were season (1- October to March, 2 -April to September) and year of the beginning of lactation, calving order and the LL (covariate). For the analysis of LL only the fixed effect of year of the beginning of lactation was included, and finally for the CI analysis, year of the beginning of lactation and calving order. The estimates of covariance were obtained using unicharacteristic analysis by Bayesian inference method, applyingan animal model, through Gibbs sampling. The additive genetic, permanent environment and residual effects were included as random effects in the model. The averages (sd) of MP, LL and CI were 2,218.03 kg (408.18), 282.59 days (39.48) e 422.49 days (91.05), respectively. All the effects included in the models were important (P<0.01). The estimates of heritability and repeatability for PL were 0.29 and 0.69, respectively. The results suggest that there is a moderate genetic variability among individuals for PL, indicating the possibility to obtain gain using selection.

The concern with infant mortality has been a priority in public policies, especially for Brazil to achieve the Millennium Development Goal number four: reducing child mortality by 75% by the year 2015. It is known that prematurity has an intimate relationship with mortality of children under one year and therefore it is necessary an effective intervention in risk factors linked to premature births. To evaluate the profile of mothers and newborn babies living in Botucatu-SP, in the period 2001 to 2009, focusing on prematurity. A quantitative study, retrospective, descriptive, epidemiological, from the Information System Newborn Alive. The prevalence of preterm births was 15.1%, and low birth weight 14.7%. Among infants, the Apgar score below 7 at 1 and at 5 minutes was 13.1% and 2.4% respectively. Considering the total of pregnant women studied, 20.3% were adolescents and 10.3% were aged 35 years or more and most (63.2%) had eight or more years of school approval. The profile of mothers of premature infants shows that 23.6% were teenagers, 14.1% had at least 35 years and 60.4% had at least primary education. With regard to premature deliveries, caesarean sections and 58.4% were between the total newborns, this type of delivery was achieved in 46.6% of cases. Prematurity was associated with an Apgar score below seven in the first and fifth minutes of life, presence of malformation and multiple pregnancy. Among maternal variables, prematurity was associated with extremes of maternal age, maternal education, history of stillbirth, primiparas, white and presence of the mother's partner. With regard to delivery was associated with cesarean section and outside the hospital. This study assessed maternal characteristics associated with prematurity and point out how relevant the pregnancies at the extremes of age and those that occur in women with low education level, indicating the interference... O aleitamento materno é um ato único de amor. Apesar da importância do aleitamento materno para a criança, a mãe, a família e a sociedade, estudos mostram que a amamentação sofreu um declínio em todo o mundo, levando a conseqüências desastrosas para a saúde das crianças e das mães. Os mitos e crendices construídos no decorrer da vida interferem no ato de amamentar e estes são passados de geração para geração. Estudos indicam que as avós podem influenciar positivamente ou negativamente na amamentação tanto na sua duração quanto na sua exclusividade. Assim o objetivo deste trabalho foi de levantar o conhecimento de três mulheres da mesma família sobre o aleitamento materno, verificar os mitos e crendices e observar se eles passam de geração para geração. A pesquisa qualitativa e exploratória envolveu 8 famílias, portanto, 24 mulheres. Através de um questionário com questões abertas e fechadas sobre a identificação dos sujeitos, suas gestações e experiências e de uma entrevista semi-estruturada foi possível verificar o conhecimento que cada geração possui. Os resultados mostraram que apesar de alguns mitos e crendices diminuírem conforme passam as gerações, muitos ainda existem e vem sendo perpetuados. Portanto, é muito importante tratar da importância do aleitamento materno com crianças, construindo futuros pais com um conhecimento real eliminando mitos e crendices que são trazidos pelas gerações passadas e que influenciam no sucesso do aleitamento materno.

Means for milk, not otherwise specified, the product from complete and uninterrupted milking , in a hygienic, healthy cows, well fed and rested. The milk of other animals must be called according to origin of species. One of the main characteristics that defined the milk is the set of their sensory characteristics, and the main flavor. The control of milk quality in Brazil has been an important factor for the consolidation of the entire production chain, passing necessarily by the dairy industry. The production of milk with good quality guarantees, of course, food safety for consumers. The measures to obtain milk begin on the property, in carrying out correct procedures for milking, storage and transportation of the product also in the dairy. Later, in the laboratory evaluation of physicochemical properties, research fraud, and microbiological examinations. Finally, measures of health education are need for producers to become aware of the economic benefits by obtaining a better quality milk. The objective of this review is to emphasize the importance of using diagnostic procedures methods for the control of mastitis and consequently obtain better Milk quality

The conservation of raw milk for long periods of time under refrigeration can result in the lost of its quality. This happens because bacterias, capable of developing in low temperatures, as psichrotrophics, in milk, associates with its enzymatic activities, are capable to degradate it. Although the pasteurization of milk sufficiently diminishes the transmission of the illnesses, that generally eliminates such microorganisms, is not a total efficient process because many enzymes produced for such bacterias are termostable, being able to resist the treatment and to remain active, leading to the loss of the quality of milk and its derivatives. The Normative Instruction 51 of 2002 established that milk must be cooled and stored in the production property, what resulted increasing the incidence of such bacteria in population destined milk. In some parts of the world contaminated milk is causing serious risks to the health of the population, assuming great importance in Public Health, mainly in relation to the hygienic-sanitary conditions of the product. ANVISA establishes, thus, maximum bacteriological concentration that must be evidenced before commercializing the product, guaranteeing the quality of milk as proper for consumption. Based on these aspects, the objective of this work is the microbiological analysis of 30 milk samples type C, collected in bakeries of the city Botucatu, in the state of São Paulo. Analysis were made to determinate the most likely number of termotolerants coliforms, as well the number of colony units of psichrotrophics bacterias, the presence of Salmonella and the enumeration of positive Staphylococcus aureus, at the moment of purchase and validity of the products

This study aimed to conduct a review in most articles relating mastitis and reproduction. Mastitis affects the reproduction according to its time of occurrence and agent. Mastitis affects the interval interestrus and also increases the number of days open, the number of services per conception, the abortion rate and decreases the conception rate. The inflammatory reaction generated by mastitis and all the toxins produced by bacteria alter the entire endocrine profile of cows that experienced episodes of mastitis and thus affect their reproduction

This work consists of the implementation of the steps Define, Measure , Analyze , Improve and Control ( DMAIC ) to develop a Six Sigma project in an industry the food industry. The objective was to demonstrate a potential for reducing the occurrence of crushed cans in potting milk powder industry in a White Belt project. The food industry accounts for about 9 % of Brazil's gross domestic product ( GDP ), generating thousands of jobs . Among the major sectors of the food industry is the manufacturing sector of milk , occupies approximately 10 % of the total turnover of the food industry . Brazil is considered today one of the eight largest producers of milk powder in the world. The milk powder is packed , mostly for aluminum cans that are lined internally with varnishes and other materials to protect the milk of metals from aluminum. When the cans are dented food protection is compromised and may lead ingestion causing dis-eases such as botulism. Aiming to solve the problem of dented cans methodology was used as a case study with a quantitative approach through the DMAIC method. Some quality tools used in each step of the project as brainstorming , cause and effect diagram , flowchart , ef-fort and impact matrix, 5W1H , among other Pareto diagram is presented . A survey about the disposal of cans in the company verifying a mean loss and, from this histor-ical , a goal loss was calculated was performed . With the target set we calculated the annual saving design . During application of DMAIC was found that the highest rate of loss occurred in transportation between the factory and the factory that fills cans milk . Several actions were taken to resolve problems that resulted in dented cans and the first two months of phase control it was found that the smaller losses calculated target resulting in a saving for the company. o estudo faz uma avaliação do conhecimento das gestantes à respeito de alguns aspectos do planejamento familiar, gestação, parto e amamentação. Trabalhando na saúde pública, particularmente com gestantes foi observado certa ansiedade e insegurança por parte delas, além da falta de conhecimento à respeito desse período. Objetivo: diagnosticar o nível de conhecimento das gestantes da Unidade Básica de Saúde Boa Vista, em Limeira, visando à melhora do atendimento de gestantes. Metodologia: a pesquisa é do tipo mista, isto é, com abordagem qualitativa e quantitativa. A metodologia para coleta de dados foi a entrevista semi-estruturada, com vinte cinco gestantes sobre o conhecimento e a experiência quanto ao planejamento da gravidez, métodos anticoncepcionais, acompanhamento pré-natal, parto e amamentação. Resultados: os resultados indicaram que a maioria das gestantes não teve sua gestação planejada, embora todas conhecessem algum método e parte delas fizesse uso. Quanto ao acompanhamento pré-natal, a totalidade explicitou um número de consultas necessárias dentro do recomendado pelo Ministério da saúde que é 6 consultas durante a gestação. Já em relação aos exames necessários o resultado apresentou fragilidades, pois a maioria citou desconhecer a importância de todos os exames. Quanto aos cuidados durante a gravidez, eles estiveram relacionados à alimentação e ao esforço físico, sendo as atividades sexuais mantidas dentro da rotina. Sobre o parto, a totalidade demonstrou ter conhecimento dos partos normal e cesárea e a maioria deseja ter parto normal, o que é muito positivo. No que diz respeito à amamentação, as gestantes reconheceram sua importância embora as justificativas, de modo geral, tenham sido restritas. Elas demonstram que desejam amamentar, no entanto, 32% delas não pretendem amamentar exclusivamente até os 6 meses. Conclusão: ...(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo)
