In the latest Paleocene an abrupt shift to more negative d13C values has been documented at numerous marine and terrestrial sites (Bralower et al., 1997, doi:10.1130/0091-7613(1997)025<0963:HRROTL>2.3.CO;2; Cramer et al., 1999; Kaiho et al., 1996, doi:10.1029/96PA01021; Kennett and Stott, 1991, doi:10.1038/353225a0; Koch et al., 1992, doi:10.1038/358319a0; Stott et al., 1996; Thomas and Shackleton, 1996, doi:10.1144/GSL.SP.1996.101.01.20; Zachos et al., 1993). This carbon isotope event (CIE) is coincident with oxygen isotope data that indicate warming of surface waters at high latitudes of nearly 4°-6°C (Kennett and Stott, 1991, doi:10.1038/353225a0) and more moderate warming in the subtropics (Thomas et al., 1999, doi:10.1029/1999PA900031). Here we report 187Os/188Os isotope records from the North Atlantic and Indian Oceans which demonstrate a >10% increase in the 187Os/188Os ratio of seawater coincident with the late Paleocene CIE. This excursion to higher 187Os/188Os ratios is consistent with a global increase in weathering rates. The inference of increased chemical weathering during this interval of unusual warmth is significant because it provides empirical evidence supporting the operation of a feedback between chemical weathering rates and warm global climate, which acts to stabilize Earth's climate (Walker et al., 1981). Estimates of the duration of late Paleocene CIE (Bains et al., 1999, doi:10.1126/science.285.5428.724; Bralower et al., 1997, doi:10.1130/0091-7613(1997)025<0963:HRROTL>2.3.CO;2; Norris and Röhl, 1999, doi:10.1038/44545; Röhl et al., 2000, doi:10.1130/0091-7613(2000)28<927:NCFTLP>2.0.CO;2) in conjunction with the Os isotope data imply that intensified chemical weathering in response to warm, humid climates can occur on timescales of 104-105 years. This interpretation requires that the late Paleocene thermal maximum Os isotope excursion be produced mainly by increased Os flux to the ocean rather than a transient excursion to higher 187Os/188Os ratios in river runoff. Although we argue that the former is more likely than the latter, we cannot rule out significant changes in the 187Os/188Os ratio of rivers.

ODP Leg 131 recovered nannofossil-bearing sediments from Site 808 in the Nankai Trough, western Pacific Ocean. Three holes were examined for nannofossils, 808A, 808B, and 808C. A total of 22 nannofossil events were recognized, of which 10 are used as zonal markers. The sediments recovered from Hole 808A (0-111.4 mbsf) contain Pleistocene nannofossil assemblages that are mostly well preserved. All samples from this hole were assigned to nannofossil Zone NN21. The nannofossil assemblages observed in Hole 808B (111.0-358.8 mbsf) are poorly to well preserved and were all assigned to the Pleistocene. The NN21/NN20 Boundary is placed at 230.7 ± 4.4 mbsf. Hole 808C was cored from 298.5 to 1327 mbsf and basalt was reached at 1289.9 mbsf. The sediments recovered range in age from the upper part of Zone NN20 of the Pleistocene to Zone NN5 of the middle Miocene and contain poorly to well-preserved nannofossil assemblages. The Pliocene/Pleistocene Boundary, marked by the FO Gephyrocapsa caribbeanica, was placed at 776.3 ±1.6 mbsf, and the Miocene/Pliocene Boundary is tentatively placed at 955.9 ±1.5 mbsf. The lowermost sediments above basement as well as a sediment sample intercalated between basalt flows are assigned to Zone NN5, with an age of approximately 15 Ma. Age estimates provided by nannofossils show that the sedimentation rate in the trench-fill deposits of the Nankai Trough was very high, 800-1350 m/m.y (0-0.46 Ma), whereas in the Shikoku Basin deposits (> 0.46 Ma), the sedimentation rate was much lower (24-200 m/m.y). These age estimates also provide an extrapolated age of approximately 15 Ma for the basaltic basement at Site 808.

The geochemistry of the youngest Mediterranean sapropel layer suggests changes in productivity and water column oxygen conditions during sapropel deposition. The Ba-enriched interval is broader than the organic-carbon-rich interval of this sapropel. We suggest that the Ba-enriched horizon records the original thickness of the sapropel prior to subsequent partial oxidation. The main carrier of Ba is barite, as microcrystals (0.5-5 µm ) having a morphology characteristic of marine barite, particularly abundant beneath high productivity regions. Ba concentrations do not change at the sapropel layer oxidation front and diagenetic barite crystals are absent, thus the Ba-enriched layer reflects original oceanic conditions of increased biological productivity during sapropel deposition and not diagenetic Ba remobilization. Paleoredox indicators point to restricted oxygenated bottom water but not to fully anoxic conditions. Detrital elements within this layer indicate a lower eolian terrigenous input, enhanced humidity, and increased precipitation/runoff, thus likely higher nutrient supply.

Late Maestrichtian to late Eocene bathyal benthic foraminiferal faunas at Sites 752,753, and 754 on Broken Ridge in the eastern Indian Ocean were analyzed as to their stratigraphic distribution of species to clarify the relation between faunal turnovers and paleoceanographic changes. Based on Q-mode factor analysis, eight varimax assemblages were distinguished: the Stensioina beccariiformis assemblage in the upper Maestrichtian to upper Paleocene; the Cibicidoides hyphalus assemblage in the upper Maestrichtian; the Cibicidoides cf. pseudoperlucidus assemblage in the upper Paleocene; the Anomalinoides capitatusldanicus assemblage in the uppermost Paleocene to lower Eocene; the Cibicidoides subspiratus assemblage in the lower Eocene; the Nuttallides truempyi assemblage in the lower and middle Eocene; the Osangularia sp. 1 - Hanzawaia ammophila assemblage in the upper Eocene; and the Lenticulina spp. assemblage in the uppermost Eocene, Oligocene, and lower Miocene. The presence of the Osangularia sp. 1 - Hanzawaia ammophila assemblage is related to the shallowing episode on Broken Ridge (upper bathyal), as a result of the rifting event that occurred in the middle Eocene. The most distinct faunal change (the disappearance of about 37% of the species) occurred between the S. beccariiformis assemblage and the A. capitatusldanicus assemblage, at the end of the upper Paleocene. A. capitatusldanicus, Lenticulina spp., and varied forms of Cibicidoides replaced the Velasco-type fauna at this time. The timing of this event is well correlated with the known age at South Atlantic sites (Thomas, 1990 doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.113.123.1990; Kennett and Stott, 1990 doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.113.188.1990; Katz and Miller, 1990 doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.114.147.1991). The primary cause of the extinction of the Stensioina beccariiformis assemblage is elusive, but may have resulted from the cessation of deep-water formation in the Antarctic (Katz and Miller, 1990), and subsequent arrival of warm saline deep water (Thomas, 1990; Kennett and Stott, 1990). Another possibility may be a weakened influence of high-salinity water formed at the low latitudes such as the Tethys Sea. The extinction event corresponds to the change from higher delta13C values in benthic foraminifers to lower ones. An interpretation of delta13C values is that the eastern Indian deep water, characterized by young and nutrient-depleted water, became old water which was devoid of a supply of new water during the latest Paleocene to early Eocene. Prior to this benthic event, signals of related faunal change were detected in the following short periods: early and late Paleocene, near the boundary of nannofossil Zone CP4, and Zone CP5 of the late Paleocene at Site 752. Among common taxa in the upper Maestrichtian, only seven species disappeared or became extinct at the Cretaceous/ Tertiary boundary at Site 752. The benthic foraminiferal population did not change for up to 2 m above the boundary, in contrast to the rapid decrease of the plankt onic foraminiferal population at the boundary. A decrease in the number of benthic foraminifers occurs after that level, corresponding to an interval of decreased numbers of planktonic foraminifers and higher abundance of volcanic ash. Reduced species diversity (H') suggests a secondary effect attributable to the dissolution of foraminiferal tests. The different responses of planktonic and benthic foraminifers to the event just above the boundary suggest that the Cretaceous/Tertiary event was a surface event as also suggested by Thomas (1990). In addition, a positive shift of delta13C in benthic foraminifers after the event indicates nutrient-depleted bottom water at Site 752.

The seismic data were acquired north of the Knipovich Ridge on the western Svalbard margin during cruise MSM21/4. They were recorded using a Geometrics GeoEel streamer of either 120 channels (profiles p100-p208) or 88 channels (profiles p300-p805) with a group spacing of 1.56 m and a sampling rate of 2 kHz. A GI-Gun (2×1.7 l) with a main frequency of ~150 Hz was used as a source and operated at a shot interval of 6-8 s. Processing of profiles p100-p208 and p600-p805: Positions for each channel were calculated by backtracking along the profiles from the GI-Gun GPS positions. The shot gathers were analyzed for abnormal amplitudes below the seafloor reflection by comparing neighboring traces in different frequency bands within sliding time windows. To suppress surface-generated water noise, a tau-p filter was applied in the shot gather domain. Common mid-point (CMP) profiles were then generated through crooked-line binning with a CMP spacing of 1.5625 m. A zero-phase band-pass filter with corner frequencies of 60 Hz and 360 Hz was applied to the data. Based on regional velocity information from MCS data [Sarkar, 2012], an interpolated and extrapolated 3D interval velocity model was created below the digitized seafloor reflection of the high-resolution streamer data. This velocity model was used to apply a CMP stack and an amplitude-preserving Kirchhoff post-stack time migration. Processing of profiles p400-p500: Data were sampled at 0.5 ms and sorted into common midpoint (CMP) domain with a bin spacing of 5 m. Normal move out correction was carried out with a velocity of 1500 m s-1 and an Ormsby bandpass filter with corner frequencies at 40, 80, 600 and 1000 Hz was applied. The data were time migrated using the water velocity.

The biostratigraphic distribution and qualitative relative abundance of Quaternary-Pliocene diatoms from Ocean Drilling Program Leg 188, Sites 1165 (64.380°S, 67.219°E) and 1166 (67.696°S, 74.787°E) offshore from East Antarctica, are documented in this report. The upper ~50 meters below seafloor (mbsf) of Hole 1165B consists of brown diatom-bearing silty clay spanning the upper Pleistocene to lower Pliocene. The diatom stratigraphy indicates a disconformity at ~17.1 mbsf of 0.5- to 0.6-m.y. duration. The integration of biostratigraphic and magnetostratigraphic data identified other disconformities at ~6.0, 14.4, 15.6, and 16.0 mbsf, but the duration of these hiatuses cannot be resolved through diatom biostratigraphy. In Hole 1166A, a narrow interval of diatomaceous Quaternary sediment is identified in the upper 2.92 mbsf and dated biostratigraphically at <0.38 Ma. The remaining Quaternary-Pliocene section is dominated by diamicton, except at ~114 mbsf, where two thin diatomaceous beds are present. The lower bed is ~65 cm thick, 2.5-2.7 to 2.7-3.2 Ma in age, and possibly disconformably overlain by the upper bed, which is ~15 cm thick and 1.8-2.0 to 2.1-2.5 Ma in age. The Pliocene assemblages in Hole 1166A contain components of both Southern Ocean and Antarctic continental shelf (Ross Sea) diatom floras.

Constraining the nature of Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS) response to major past climate changes may provide a window onto future ice response and rates of sea level rise. One approach to tracking AIS dynamics, and differentiating whole system versus potentially heterogeneous ice sheet sector changes, is to integrate multiple climate proxies for a specific time slice across widely distributed locations. This study presents new iceberg-rafted debris (IRD) data across the interval that includes Marine Isotope Stage 31 (MIS 31: 1.081-1.062 Ma, a span of ~19 kyr; Lisiecki and Raymo, 2005), which lies on the cusp of the mid-Brunhes climate transition (as glacial cycles shifted from ~41,000 yr to ~100,000 yr duration). Two sites are studied - distal Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 177 Site 1090 (Site 1090) in the eastern subantarctic sector of the South Atlantic Ocean, and proximal ODP Leg 188 Site 1165 (Site 1165), near Prydz Bay, in the Indian Ocean sector of the Antarctic margin. At each of these sites, MIS 31 is marked by the presence of the Jaramillo Subchron (0.988-1.072 Ma; Lourens et al., 2004) which provides a time-marker to correlate these two sites with relative precision. At both sites, records of multiple climate proxies are available to aid in interpretation. The presence of IRD in sediments from our study areas, which include garnets indicating a likely East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS) origin, supports the conclusion that although the EAIS apparently withdrew significantly over MIS 31 in the Prydz Bay region and other sectors, some sectors of the EAIS must still have maintained marine margins capable of launching icebergs even through the warmest intervals. Thus, the EAIS did not respond in complete synchrony even to major climate changes such as MIS 31. Further, the record at Site 1090 (supported by records from other subantarctic locations) indicates that the glacial MIS 32 should be reduced to no more than a stadial, and the warm interval of Antarctic ice retreat that includes MIS 31 should be expanded to MIS 33-31. This revised warm interval lasted about 52 kyr, in line with several other interglacials in the benthic d18O records stack of Lisiecki and Raymo (2005), including the super-interglacials MIS 11 (duration of 50 kyr) and MIS 5 (duration of 59 kyr). The record from Antarctica-proximal Site 1165, when interpreted in accord with the record from ANDRILL-1B, indicates that in these southern high latitude sectors, ice sheet retreat and the effects of warming lasted longer than at Site 1090, perhaps until MIS 27. In the current interpretations of the age models of the proximal sites, ice sheet retreat began relatively slowly, and was not really evident until the start of MIS 31. In another somewhat more speculative interpretation, ice sheet retreat began noticeably with MIS 33, and accelerated during MIS 31. Ice sheet inertia (the lag-times in the large-scale responses of major ice sheets to a forcing) likely plays an important part in the timing and scale of these events in vulnerable sectors of the AIS.

During summer seasons (from 2012 to 2015) high resolution observation were performed in the Civitavecchia coastal area (Northern Tyrrhenian sea, west coast). All sampling was carried out from a small boat (5m rigid inflatable) starting in the early morning typically around 06:00 a.m. , and lasting from 2 to 8 h, depending on the weather conditions. The purposes of the experiment was to observe the variations of both the coastal circulation and the water column in response to rotation of 180 ° in the wind direction. During surveys both current measurements and yo-yo time series were performed. Current data were acquired using an ADCP SonTeck (500 Khz, sampling interval from 20sec to 60 sec, average interval 50% sampling, cell thickness 1 meter) and the yo-yo time series employing a small instrument package (CTD). The CTD contained an Idronaut 316 Plus and a SeaPoint fluorometer. The sampling rate for the CTD was 10Hz, profiling with the CTD was done by allowing the instrument package to free-fall, at an average descent rate of 1 m/s. During the summer 2012, the sampling plan consisted in four stations spaced a quarter of a mile (St. 1 - 10 m; St. 2 - 20 m; St. 3 - 30 m; and St. 4 - 40 m), in which yo-yo time series were performed with an interval of 20 min. In order to study fluorescence of Chlorophyll a pathes distribution in coastal zone. Breeze induced circulation was the goal of the following summers surveys, in these current measurements and yo-yo time series were performed moored at a depth of 40 m. Offshore station (St. 1 -40m) has been chosen to perform measurement, basis of previously observations (2012 sampling surveys). It was decided as wind driven circulation and mixing phenomena are less influenced by seabed than the other stations. Acquired data have been processed by NEMO SeaDataNet software.

Tesis Doctoral Yans Guardia Puebla Abstract ix ABSTRACT Due to the increase of quality standards internationally demanded, as well as for a greater pressure on the industry by means of more rigorous environmental legislations, the coffee sector is forced to search, through the research, an appropriated treatment system for coffee wet wastewaters generated. In this work the performance of the anaerobic digestion for the coffee wet wastewater treatment was evaluated. For it, two anaerobic systems, one in single-stage (UASB), and another with two-phase (2PUASB) were used. The effect in the anaerobic digestion of three organic loading rates (OLR) and of two reactor configurations used was investigated. OLR operation values in UASB system varied in an interval of 3.6-4.1 kgCOD m-3 d-1, with a recycle rate of the effluent of 1.0. 2PUASB system was fed with OLR similar to those that were used in the reactor in a stage. The acidification reactor was loaded to 11.0 kgCOD m-3 d-1, whereas in the methanogenic reactor varied in the interval of 2.6-4.67 kgCOD m-3 d-1. The use of single-stage and two-phase UASB reactors, under the same operation conditions already before described, a total COD removal efficiency of 75% and 85% for the soluble COD removal efficiency, respectively, was achieved. However, two-phase system showed better results in the treatment of this wastewater type, not only as for removal efficiency of loading organic polluting as well as a smaller volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentration in the effluent. Obtained the best work conditions, the two-phase system under the effect of the recycle was evaluated. Fermentations groups produced were similar to those obtained in the experiment without recycle, indicating that it last one do not affect the relative composition of VFA of the anaerobic reactor, for that reason the degradation pattern of the residue does not change. A recycle rate of 1.0 of the effluent of the methanogenic reactor to the acidogenic reactor improved the process significantly, since it was increased the VFA conversion (31%), the removal of total and soluble fraction of the residue treated (6.5%) and the decrease of the alkalinity consumption (39%); maintaining similar methane productions. The use of the two-phase anaerobic digestion demonstrated to an improvement in the stability of the process and an increase of the operation efficiency and methane production, respectively.

ABSTRACT. The first step in engineering design and development is an analysis and simulation process which will successfully corroborate the initial hypothesis that was made and find solutions for a particular. In this way, it is possible to obtain empirical evidence which suitably substantiate the purposes of the project. Commonly, the characteristics to reach a particular target are found through iterative trial and error methods. These kinds of methods are based on the same theoretical analysis but with a variation of some parameters, with the objective to adapt the results for a particular aim. At present, powerful computers and mathematical algorithms are available to solve different kinds of calculation problems in a fast and efficient way. Computing application development is useful as it gives a high level of accurate results for engineering analysis and synthesis in short periods of time. This is more notable in cases where the mathematical expressions on a theoretical base are similar but with small variations of constant values. This is due to the ease of adaptation of the computer programming code into a parameter request system that defines a particular solution on each execution. Additionally, it is possible to code an application suitable to simulate any issue related to the studied technology. The aim of the present project consists of the construction of the first stage of an optoelectronics simulator named Slabsim. Slabism is capable of representing the energetic distribution of a light wave guided in the volume of a slab waveguide. The mentioned simulator is made through the graphic user interface development environment Matlab GUIDE, property of Mathworks©. It is designed for an easy and intuitive management by the user to execute simulations with a low knowledge of the technology theoretical bases. With this software it is possible to achieve several aims related to the slab waveguides by the user in low interval of time. One of the main purposes of this project is the mathematical solving of theoretical bases of slab structures through computing numerical analysis. This is due to the capability of adapting its criterion to other mathematical issues and provides a strong knowledge of its process. Based on these advantages, numerical solving methods are used in the core of the simulator to obtain differential and characteristic equations results that become represented on it.

ABSTRACT The objectives of this study were to build and validate an instrument to measure the barriers of adult people to the practice of sport and physical activities from the perspective of the social-ecological theory, analyse the presence of the different barriers, as well as the innovations and alternatives regarding conciliation with work and the care of children and home as barriers, identifying the possible differences that exist based on gender and the type of demand of the adult population within the Community of Madrid. For this, a quantitative, descriptive and transversal study was carried out on a representative sample of the resident population of the Community of Madrid, ages ranging from 30 to 64 years old. Given that is an infinite or very large population, and working with an interval of confidence of the 95,5%, and assuming in the population variance, the worst case of p equal to q, the margin of sampling error was ± 5,27. The sample consisted of 360 people (50,3% women, 49,7% men), who completed a questionnaire during face-to-face personal interviews between October and December 2011. The questionnaire included a scale of specific barriers, as well as sub-questionnaires on the innovations and alternatives linked to the three items regarding work, the care of children and home of the barriers scale. The barriers scale was completed by people who practice physical and sport activities and wanted to do other activities, i.e. by the Established Demand; by people who do not practice these activities but would like to do so, i.e. Latent Demand; and by people who do not practice these activities and have no desire to do so, i.e. Absent Demand (n=246). The people who peaked on the three items of the barriers scale regarding work, the care of children and home, then completed specific sub-questionnaires on the innovations and alternatives for conciliation related to these barriers. The metric study of the items and the dimensionality of the barriers scale was carried out through descriptive analyses of the items, as well as correlation analyses and exploratory factor analyses (EFA). This resulted in a barriers scale composed of 13 items that explained 59,1% of the total variability of the data, grouped in four dimensions as follows: Interpersonal Barriers (2 items), Individual Barriers (4 items), Community-Institutional Barriers (4 items) and Obligations-Time Barriers (3 items). The data obtained from the barriers scale and sub-questionnaires on the innovations and alternatives for conciliation were analyzed using software SPSS v. 18. Two-way ANOVA (gender by type of demand) was used for the comparison of quantitative and ordinal variables, and the effect size for this test was quantified with eta squared. The results were expressed as percentages for nominal variables, and as means and standard deviations for quantitative and ordinal variables. The level of risk was set at 0,05. The instrument showed an acceptable reliability (α=0,58) in line with the social-ecological model, providing dimensions that explained the influence levels of the different spheres. The results obtained establish both the adaptation of the psychometric properties of the items, and the validity and reliability of the barriers scale for the practice of physical and sport activities. The different analyses have supported the validity of a four-dimensional structure consistent with the previous theoretical approaches on the social-ecological models, while showing adequate statistical indices. The differences identified in the Individual Barriers dimension were based on the type of demand (F2,237=40,28; p<0,001; η2=0,25) and gender (F1,237=8,72; p<0,01; η2=0,84). The differences identified in the Interpersonal Barriers dimension were based on gender (F1,239 =14,9; p<0,01; η2=0,06) but not on demand (F2,239=2,35; p>0,05; 1-β=0,47). The differences identified for the Obligations-Time Barriers dimension were based on the type of demand (F2,239=3,88; p<0,05; η2=0,03) and did not show differences between men and women (F1,239=1,06; p>0,05; 1-β=0,18). Finally, the differences identified for the Community-Institutional Barriers dimension were based on the type of demand (F2,240=5,69; p<0,01; η2=0,045) and provided no differences based on gender (F1,240=0,65; p>,05; 1-β=0,13). The most valued innovations and alternatives for conciliation regarding work were the adaptation and flexibility of working hours and timetables; the most valued related to the care of children were the offer of joint activities for adults and children in sport centres, as well as separate activities within the same timetable; and, finally, the most valued regarding the home was a higher degree of participation and involvement on the part of the spouse or partner, followed by a higher degree of participation and involvement on the part of the children.

Magnetoencephalographic responses recorded from auditory cortex evoked by brief and rapidly successive stimuli differed between adults with poor vs. good reading abilities in four important ways. First, the response amplitude evoked by short-duration acoustic stimuli was stronger in the post-stimulus time range of 150–200 ms in poor readers than in normal readers. Second, response amplitude to rapidly successive and brief stimuli that were identical or that differed significantly in frequency were substantially weaker in poor readers compared with controls, for interstimulus intervals of 100 or 200 ms, but not for an interstimulus interval of 500 ms. Third, this neurological deficit closely paralleled subjects’ ability to distinguish between and to reconstruct the order of presentation of those stimulus sequences. Fourth, the average distributed response coherence evoked by rapidly successive stimuli was significantly weaker in the β- and γ-band frequency ranges (20–60 Hz) in poor readers, compared with controls. These results provide direct electrophysiological evidence supporting the hypothesis that reading disabilities are correlated with the abnormal neural representation of brief and rapidly successive sensory inputs, manifested in this study at the entry level of the cortical auditory/aural speech representational system(s).
