Lithium L-Ascorbate dihydrate (LLA) is a new metal organic nonlinear optical crystal belonging to the saccharide family. Single crystals of LLA were grown from aqueous solution. Solubility of the crystal has a positive temperature coefficient facilitating growth by slow cooling. Rietveld refinement was used to confirm the phase formation. The crystal has prismatic habit with (010), (001) and (10-1) prominent faces. Thermal analysis shows that the crystal is stable up to 102 degrees C. Transmission spectrum of the crystal extends from 302 nm to 1600 nm. Dielectric spectroscopic analysis revealed Cole Cole behaviour and prominent piezoelectric resonance peaks were observed in the range of 100-200 kHz. Second harmonic generation (SHG) conversion efficiency of up to 2.56 times that of a phase matched KDP crystal was achieved when the (010) plate of LLA single crystal was rotated about the +ve c axis, by 9.4 degrees in the clockwise direction. We also observed SHG conical sections which were attributed to noncollinear phase matching. The observation of the third conical section suggests very high birefringence and large nonlinear coefficients. A detailed study of surface laser damage showed that the crystal has high multiple damage thresholds of 9.7 GW cm(-2) and 42 GW cm(-2) at 1064 nm and 532 nm radiation respectively. A current-error space phasor based hysteresis controller with nearly constant switching frequency is proposed for a general n-level voltage source inverter fed three-phase induction motor drive. Like voltage-controlled space vector PWM (SVPWM), the proposed controller can precisely detect sub-sector changes and for switching it selects only the nearest switching voltage vectors using the information of the estimated fundamental stator voltages along α and β axes. It provides smooth transition between voltage levels, including operation in over modulation region. Due to adjacent switching amongst the nearest switching vectors forming a triangular sub-sector, in which tip of the fundamental stator voltage vector of the machine lies, switching loss is reduced while keeping the current-error space phasor within the varying parabolic boundary. Appropriate dimension and orientation of this parabolic boundary ensures similar switching frequency spectrum like constant switching frequency SVPWM-based induction motor (IM) drive. Inherent advantages of multi-level inverter and space phasor based current hysteresis controller are retained. The proposed controller is simulated as well as implemented on a 5-level inverter fed 7.5 kW open-end winding IM drive.

In this paper, a simple but accurate semi analytical charge sheet model is presented for threshold voltage of accumulation mode polycrystalline silicon on insulator (PSOI) MOSFETs. In this model, we define the threshold voltage (V-T) of the polysilicon accumulation mode MOSFET as the gate voltage required to raise the surface potential (phi(s)) to a value phi(sT) necessary to overcome the charge trapping in the grain boundary and to create channel accumulation charge that is equal to the channel accumulation charge available in the case of single crystal silicon accumulation mode MOSFET at that phi(sT). The correctness of the model is demonstrated by comparing the theoretically estimated values of threshold voltage with the experimentally measured threshold voltages on the accumulation mode PSOI MOSFETs fabricated in the laboratory using LPCVD polysilicon layers doped with boron to achieve dopant densities in the range 3.3 x 10(-15)-5 x 10(17)/cm(3). Further, it is shown that the threshold voltage values of accumulation mode PSOI MOSFETs predicted by the present model match very closely with the experimental results, better than those obtained with the models previously reported in the literature. This paper presents a multilevel inverter topology suitable for the generation of dodecagonal space vectors instead of hexagonal space vectors as in the case of conventional schemes. This feature eliminates all the 6n +/- 1 (n = odd) harmonics from the phase voltages and currents in the entire modulation range with an increase in the linear modulation range. The topology is realized by flying capacitor-based three-level inverters feeding from two ends of an open-end winding induction motor with asymmetric dc links. The flying capacitor voltages are tightly controlled throughout the modulation range using redundant switching states for any load power factor. A simple and fast carrier-based space-vector pulsewidth modulation (PWM) scheme is also proposed for the topology which utilizes only the sampled amplitudes of the reference wave for the PWM timing computation.

It is known that carbon nanotubes (CNTs) possess multifunctional characteristics, which are applicable for a wide variety of engineering applications. CNT is also recognized as a radiation sensitive material, for example for detecting infrared (IR) radiations. One of the direct implications of exposing CNTs to radiation is the photomechanical actuation and generation of a photovoltage/photocurrent. The present work focuses on coupling electromechanical and photomechanical characteristics to enhance the resulting induced-strain response in CNTs. We have demonstrated that after applying an electric field the induced strain in CNT sheet is enhanced to about similar to 2.18 times for the maximum applied electric field at 2 V as compared to the photo-actuation response alone. This enhancement of the strain at higher bias voltages (> 1 V) can be considered as a sum of individual contributions of the bias voltage and IR stimulus. However, at lower voltage (< 1 V) the enhancement in the resulting strain has been attributed to the associated electrostatic effects when CNTs are stimulated with IR radiation under external bias conditions. This report reveals that voltage bias or IR stimulus alone could not produce the observed strain in the CNT sheet under lower bias conditions.

Identical parallel-connected converters with unequal load sharing have unequal terminal voltages. The difference in terminal voltages is more pronounced in case of back-to-back connected converters, operated in power-circulation mode for the purpose of endurance tests. In this paper, a synchronous reference frame based analysis is presented to estimate the grid current distortion in interleaved, grid-connected converters with unequal terminal voltages. Influence of carrier interleaving angle on rms grid current ripple is studied theoretically as well as experimentally. Optimum interleaving angle to minimize the rms grid current ripple is investigated for different applications of parallel converters. The applications include unity power factor rectifiers, inverters for renewable energy sources, reactive power compensators, and circulating-power test set-up used for thermal testing of high-power converters. Optimum interleaving angle is shown to be a strong function of the average of the modulation indices of the two converters, irrespective of the application. The findings are verified experimentally on two parallel-connected converters, circulating reactive power of up to 150 kVA between them.

Electrical switching studies on amorphous Ge17Te83−xSnx thin films (1 ≤ x ≤ 4) has been done to find their suitability for Phase Change Memory application; Bulk ingots in glassy form are prepared using conventional melt quenching technique and the thin films are coated using flash evaporation technique. Samples are found to exhibit memory type of electrical switching behavior. The switching voltages of Ge17Te83−xSnx thin films have been found to decrease with increase in Sn concentration. The comparatively lower switching voltages of Ge17Te83−xSnx samples, make them suitable candidates for phase change memory applications.

The nonlinear equations for coupled elastic flapping-twisting motion of a dragonfly in- spired smart flapping wing are used for a flapping wing actuated from the root by a PZT unimorph in the piezofan configuration. Excitation by the piezoelectric harmonic force generates only the flap bending motion, which in turn, induces the elastic twist motion due to interaction between flexural and torsional vibrations modes. An unsteady aerodynamic model is used to obtain the aerodynamic forces. Numerical simulations are performed using a wing whose size is the same as the dragonfly Sympetrum Frequens wing. It is found that the value of average lift reaches to its maximum when the smart flapping wing is excited at a frequency closer to the natural frequency in torsion. Moreover, consideration of the elastic twisting of flapping wing leads to an increase in the lift force. It is also found that the flapping wing generates sufficient lift to support its own weight and carry a small pay- load. Therefore, the piezoelectrically actuated smart flapping wing based on the geometry of Sympetrum Frequens wing and undergoing flapping-twisting motions may be considered as a potential candidate for use in MAV applications.

Ceramic/Porcelain insulators are widely used in power transmission lines to provide mechanical support for High voltage conductors in addition to withstand electrical stresses. As a result of lightning, switching or temporary over voltages that could initiate flashover under worst weather conditions, and to operate within interference limits. Given that the useful life in service of the individual insulator elements making up the insulator strings is hard to predict, they must be verified periodically to ensure that adequate line reliability is maintained at all times. Over the years utilities have adopted few methods to detect defective discs in a string, subsequently replacement of the faulty discs are being carried out for smooth operation. But, if the insulator is found to be defective in a string at some location that may not create any changes in the field configuration, there is no need to replace to avoid manpower and cost of replacement. Due to deficiency of electric field data for the existing string configuration, utilities are forced to replace the discs which may not be essentially required. Hence, effort is made in the present work to simulate the potential and electric field along the normal and with faults induced discs in a string up to 765 kV system voltages using Surface Charge Simulation Method (SCSM). A comparison is made between simulated results, experimental and field data and it was found that the computed results are quite acceptable and useful.

Wind power, as an alternative to fossil fuels, is plentiful, renewable, widely distributed, clean, produces no greenhouse gas emissions during operation, and uses little land. In operation, the overall cost per unit of energy produced is similar to the cost for new coal and natural gas installations. However, the stochastic behaviour of wind speeds leads to significant disharmony between wind energy production and electricity demand. Wind generation suffers from an intermittent characteristics due to the own diurnal and seasonal patterns of the wind behaviour. Both reactive power and voltage control are important under varying operating conditions of wind farm. To optimize reactive power flow and to keep voltages in limit, an optimization method is proposed in this paper. The objective proposed is minimization of the voltage deviations of the load buses (Vdesired). The approach considers the reactive power limits of wind generators and co-ordinates the transformer taps. This algorithm has been tested under practically varying conditions simulated on a test system. The results are obtained on a system of 50-bus real life equivalent power network. The result shows the efficiency of the proposed method.

In this paper, we report on the application aspect of piezoelectric ZnO thin film deposited on flexible phynox alloy substrate. Highly crystalline piezoelectric ZnO thin films were deposited by RF reactive magnetron sputtering and were characterized by XRD, SEM, AFM analysis. Also, the effective d(33) coefficient value measurement was performed. The actuator element is a circular diaphragm of phynox alloy on to which piezoelectric ZnO thin film was deposited. ZnO film deposited actuator element was firmly fixed inside a suitable concave perspex mounting designed specifically for micro actuation purpose. The actuator element was excited at different frequencies for the supply voltages of 2V, 5V and 8V. Maximum deflection of the ZnO film deposited diaphragm was measured to be 1.25 mu m at 100 Hz for the supply voltage of 8V. The developed micro actuator has the potential to be used as a micro pump for pumping nano liters to micro liters of fluids per minute for numerous biomedical and aerospace applications.

This paper presents a fast and accurate relaying technique for a long 765kv UHV transmission line based on support vector machine. For a long EHV/UHV transmission line with large distributed capacitance, a traditional distance relay which uses a lumped parameter model of the transmission line can cause malfunction of the relay. With a frequency of 1kHz, 1/4th cycle of instantaneous values of currents and voltages of all phases at the relying end are fed to Support Vector Machine(SVM). The SVM detects fault type accurately using 3 milliseconds of post-fault data and reduces the fault clearing time which improves the system stability and power transfer capability. The performance of relaying scheme has been checked with a typical 765kV Indian transmission System which is simulated using the Electromagnetic Transients Program(EMTP) developed by authors in which the distributed parameter line model is used. More than 15,000 different short circuit fault cases are simulated by varying fault location, fault impedance, fault incidence angle and fault type to train the SVM for high speed accurate relaying. Simulation studies have shown that the proposed relay provides fast and accurate protection irrespective of fault location, fault impedance, incidence time of fault and fault type. And also the proposed scheme can be used as augmentation for the existing relaying, particularly for Zone-2, Zone-3 protection.

A new scheme for nine-level voltage space-vector generation for medium-voltage induction motor (IM) drives with open-end stator winding is presented in this paper. The proposed nine-level power converter topology consists of two conventional three-phase two-level voltage source inverters powered by isolated dc sources and six floating-capacitor-connected H-bridges. The H-bridge capacitor voltages are effectively maintained at the required asymmetrical levels by employing a space vector modulation (SVPWM) based control strategy. An interesting feature of this topology is its ability to function in five-or three-level mode, in the entire modulation range, at full-power rating, in the event of any failure in the H-bridges. This feature significantly improves the reliability of the proposed drive system. Each leg of the three-phase two-level inverters used in this topology switches only for a half cycle of the reference voltage waveform. Hence, the effective switching frequency is reduced by half, resulting in switching loss reduction in high-voltage devices. The transient as well as the steady-state performance of the proposed nine-level inverter-fed IM drive system is experimentally verified in the entire modulation range including the overmodulation region.

In this paper, a simple single-phase grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) inverter topology consisting of a boost section, a low-voltage single-phase inverter with an inductive filter, and a step-up transformer interfacing the grid is considered. Ideally, this topology will not inject any lower order harmonics into the grid due to high-frequency pulse width modulation operation. However, the nonideal factors in the system such as core saturation-induced distorted magnetizing current of the transformer and the dead time of the inverter, etc., contribute to a significant amount of lower order harmonics in the grid current. A novel design of inverter current control that mitigates lower order harmonics is presented in this paper. An adaptive harmonic compensation technique and its design are proposed for the lower order harmonic compensation. In addition, a proportional-resonant-integral (PRI) controller and its design are also proposed. This controller eliminates the dc component in the control system, which introduces even harmonics in the grid current in the topology considered. The dynamics of the system due to the interaction between the PRI controller and the adaptive compensation scheme is also analyzed. The complete design has been validated with experimental results and good agreement with theoretical analysis of the overall system is observed.
