Background Retroperitoneal liposarcomas occur more frequently between the fifth and seventh decades. Fortunately, these tumors are exceedingly rare in pregnancy, but when they occur, their management becomes even more challenging. Case A pregnant patient with a retroperitoneal liposarcoma was treated by complete surgical resection at 13 weeks of gestation. The patient gave birth at 37 weeks of gestation to a normal newborn and remains free of disease after a year. Conclusions Individualized approach should be taken according to gestational phase, tumor kinetics and overall patient`s condition. Any disturbance to materno-fetal equilibrium, should be an indication for urgent therapeutic approach.

Background: Beyond the first year after a heart transplant (HT) procedure, patients often develop dyslipidemias, which may be implicated in the genesis of transplant coronary heart disease. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) has a several anti-atherogenic properties, but the status of HDL in HT patients is still controversial. Nonetheless, determination of HDL cholesterol concentration is not sufficient for evaluation of the overall HDL protective role. In this study, a fundamental functional property of HDL, the ability to simultaneously receive the major lipid classes, was tested in HT patients. Methods: Twenty HT patients and 20 healthy normolipidemic subjects paired for gender, age and body mass index were studied. Blood samples were collected after 12-hour fasting for determination of plasma lipids, glucose, paraxonase I (PON 1) activity, HDL diameter and transfer of labeled lipids from an artificial nanoemulsion to HDL. Results: Plasma triglycerides (159 +/- 63 vs 94 +/- 35 mg/dl) and glucose (104 +/- 20 vs 86 +/- 10 mg/dl) were greater in HT patients than in control subjects. HDL cholesterol was lower and HDL diameter was smaller in the HT group (HDL cholesterol: 44 +/- 11 vs 55 +/- 15 mg/dl; HDL diameter: 8.8 +/- 0.6 vs 9.0 +/- 1.2 nm). PON 1 activity did not differ (87 +/- 47 vs 75 +/- 37 nmol/min/ml). The transfer rates of free cholesterol and cholesteryl esters were diminished in HT patients (HT: 8.4 +/- 1.2% and 3.8 +/- 0.6%; controls: 9.7 +/- 1.9% and 4.7 +/- 1.2%, respectively). Conclusions: The transfer of free cholesterol and cholesteryl esters to HDL is diminished in HT patients; disturbance in the ability of HDL to receive lipids may affect the anti-atherogenic properties of the lipoprotein. A comprehensive probabilistic model for simulating dendrite morphology and investigating dendritic growth kinetics during solidification has been developed, based on a modified Cellular Automaton (mCA) for microscopic modeling of nucleation, growth of crystals and solute diffusion. The mCA model numerically calculated solute redistribution both in the solid and liquid phases, the curvature of dendrite tips and the growth anisotropy. This modeling takes account of thermal, curvature and solute diffusion effects. Therefore, it can simulate microstructure formation both on the scale of the dendrite tip length. This model was then applied for simulating dendritic solidification of an Al-7%Si alloy. Both directional and equiaxed dendritic growth has been performed to investigate the growth anisotropy and cooling rate on dendrite morphology. Furthermore, the competitive growth and selection of dendritic crystals have also investigated.

Objectives This study evaluated the influence of oestrogen deficiency and its therapies on bone tissue around osseointegrated implants. Methods Implants were placed in 66 female rats tibiae. The animals were assigned into five groups: control (CTL), sham, ovariectomy (OVX), oestrogen (EST), and alendronate (ALE). While CTL was sacrificed 60 days after implant placement, other groups were subjected to ovariectomy or sham surgery according to group and euthanized after 90 days. Blood and urine samples were collected at sacrifice day for osteocalcin (OCN) and deoxypyridinoline (DPD) quantification. Densitometry of femur and lumbar vertebrae was performed in order to evaluate rats` skeletal impairment. Non-decalcified sections were referred to fluorescent and light microscopy for analyses of mineral apposition rate (MAR), eroded and osteoclastic surfaces, bone-to-implant contact (BIC), and bone area fraction occupancy (BAFO). Results Results from the OVX group showed significantly lower bone mineral density (BMD), BIC, BAFO, and MAR, while OCN, deoxipiridinoline, eroded surface and ostecoclastic surface were increased compared with the other groups of the study. ALE reduced OCN and DPD concentrations, MAR, osteoclastic and eroded surfaces, and no difference was in BIC and BAFO relative to SHAM. EST and CTL showed similar results to SHAM for measurements. Conclusions Oestrogen deficiency exerted a negative influence on bone tissue around implants, while oestrogen replacement therapy and alendronate were effective against its effects. Although alendronate therapy maintained the quantity of bone around implants, studies evaluating bone turnover kinetics are warranted. Extraction of intracellular protein from Escherichia coli is traditionally achieved by mechanical disruption. A chemical treatment that destroys the integrity of the bacterial cell wall and could provide an alternative technique is examined in this study. Treatment with a combination of the chelating agent ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) (greater than 0.3 mM) and the chaotropic agent urea (6 M) is highly effective at releasing protein from uninduced E. coli. The 6 M urea in the presence of 3 mM EDTA can release cytoplasmic protein from both logarithmic-phase and stationary-phase E. coli cells at levels equivalent to mechanical disruption. The concentrations of the two chemical agents were the major variables affecting the maximum levels of protein release. Several minor variables and interactions were also identified. The kinetics of protein release is first order. For 2, 4, and 6 M urea with 3 mM EDTA, the time constant is approximately 2.5 min independent of urea concentration. Kinetics for 3 mM EDTA without urea is considerably slower, with a time constant of 12.3 min. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a specific cognitive race plan on 100 m sprint performance, Twelve elite sprinters (11 male and 1 female) performed 100 m time trials under normal (control) conditions and then under experimental conditions (use of race cues). In the experimental condition, participants were asked to think about specific thought content in each of three segments of the 100 m. A multiple baseline design was employed. A mean improvement of 0.26 s was found. Eleven of the 12 participants showed improvement using the specific cognitive race plan (p < .005). Participants also produced more consistent sprint performances when using the cues (p < .01). Subjective evaluations made by the participants unanimously supported the use of the race plan for optimizing sprint performance. Environmental conditions, effort, and practice effects were considered as possible influences on the results.

Chemorheology (and thus process modeling) of highly filled thermosets used in integrated circuit (IC) packaging has been complicated by their highly filled nature, fast kinetics of curing, and viscoelastic nature. This article summarizes a more thorough chemorheological analysis of a typical IC packaging thermoset material, including novel isothermal and nonisothermal multiwave parallel-plate chemorheology. This new chemorheological analysis may be used to optimize existing and design new IC packaging processes. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Objective. Previously we showed that after intravenous injection a lipidic nanoemulsion concentrates in breast carcinoma tissue and other solid tumors and may carry drugs directed against neoplastic tissues. Use of the nanoemulsion decreases toxicity of the chemotherapeutic agents without decreasing the anticancer action. Currently, the hypothesis was tested whether the nanoemulsion concentrates in breast carcinoma tissue after locoregional injection. Methods. Three different techniques of injection of the nanoemulsion were tested in patients scheduled for surgical treatment: G1 (n=4) into the mammary tissue 5 cm away from the tumor; G2 (n=4) into the peritumoral mammary tissue; G3 (n=6) into the tumoral tissue. The nanoemulsion labeled with radioactive cholesteryl oleate was injected 12 h before surgery; plasma decay of the label was determined from blood samples collected over 24 h and the tissue fragments excised during the surgery were analyzed for radioactivity uptake. Results. Among the three nanoemulsion injection techniques, G3 showed the greatest uptake (data expressed in c.p.m/g of tissue) by the tumor (44,769 +/- 54,749) and by the lymph node (2356 +/- 2966), as well as the greatest concentration in tumor compared to normal tissue (844 +/- 1673). In G1 and G2, uptakes were, respectively, tumor: 60 +/- 71 and 843 +/- 1526; lymph node: 263 +/- 375 and 102 +/- 74; normal tissue: 139 +/- 102 and 217 +/- 413. Conclusions. Therefore, with intralesional injection of the nanoemulsion, a great concentration effect can be achieved. This injection technique may be thus a promising approach for drug-targeting in neoadjuvant chemotherapy in breast cancer treatment. (C) 2008 Published by Elsevier Inc.

Transport in bidisperse adsorbents is investigated here, while incorporating a two-dimensional model for adsorbate diffusion in the microparticles. The latter treatment permits consideration of the macropore concentration variation around the microparticle surface, and thereby predicts an adsorbate through-flux on the macroscopic coordinate. Such a through-flux has earlier been postulated in the literature, but with unrealistic mechanistic justification. The new model therefore resolves the existing ambiguity in this regard, and covers the entire spectrum of behaviour between microparticle and macropore diffusion control. Computational results show that if the macroscopic adsorbate flux, ignored in the conventional analysis, has a significant contribution to the total flux under macropore control conditions then it is always important even when the microparticle diffusion resistance is not negligible. The effect of various parameters such as relative microparticle size and isotherm heterogeneity on the uptake is also studied and discussed. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Objective. To assess the efficacy of medial-wedge insoles in valgus knee osteoarthritis (OA). Methods. Thirty consecutive women with valgus-deformity knee OA a:8 degrees were randomized into 2 groups: medial insole (insoles with B-mm medial elevation at the rearfoot [n = 161) and neutral insole (similar insole without elevation [n = 14]). Both groups also wore ankle supports. A blinded examiner assessed pain on movement, at rest, and at night with a visual analog scale (VAS), the Lequesne index., and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis (WOMAC) Index. Femorotibial, talocalcaneal, and talar tilt angles were evaluated at baseline and after 8 weeks of insole use. Results. Significant reductions in the medial insole group were observed for pain on movement (mean +/- SD VAS pre- and postintervention 8.1 +/- 1.5 versus 1 4.2 +/- 2.4; P = 0.001), at rest (5.1 +/- 2.3 versus 2.7 +/- 2.4; P = 0.002), and at night (6.1 +/- 2.7 versus 3.1 +/- 2.1; P = 0.001). In addition, a decrease in Lequesne (14.7 +/- 3.4 versus 9.6 +/- 3.8; P = 0.001) and WOMAC scores (74.1 +/- 14.2 versus 56.1 +/- 14.9; P = 0.001) was observed for the medial insole group. In the neutral insole group, a significant reduction was observed only for night pain (mean SD VAS pre- and postintervention 5.8 +/- 2.4 versus 4.6 +/- 2.4; P = 0.019). An increase in femorotibial angle (169.0 +/- 3.4 versus 170.8 +/- 2.4; P = 0.019). An increase in femorotibial angle (169.0 +/- 3.4 versus 170.8 +/- 3.7; P = 0.001) occurred only in the medial 3.7; P = 0.001) occurred only in the medial insole group. Moreover, the difference in measured fernorotibial angles pre- and postintervention was 1.84 +/- 1.42 versus -0.18 +/- 0.67 (P < 0.001) for the medial and neutral insole groups. Conclusion. The use of medial-wedge insoles was highly effective in reducing pain at rest and on movement and promoted a functional improvement of valgus knee OA.

Closantel is an anthe lmintic which associates with plasma albumin and is useful for the control of sheep parasites, such as Haemonchus contortus, that ingest blood. However, the utility of closantel for parasite control has been threatened by the emergence of resistance. The mechanisms of resistance are unknown. A closantel-resistant and a closantel-susceptible isolate of H. contortus were compared with respect to the distribution and metabolism of closantel. Neither strain appeared to metabolise closantel in vitro or in vivo. Following treatment of infected sheep with radioactively labelled closantel, isotope levels in closantel-resistant adult H. contortus were significantly lower than in susceptible worms. This reduced accumulation of drug could contribute to closantel resistance by mechanisms such as reduced feeding, failure to dissociate the drug-albumin complex in the gut or increased efflux of closantel from resistant worms. An electrochemical investigation was carried out to study the corrosion of pure magnesium in 1 N NaCl at different pH values involving electrochemical polarisation, scanning tunnel microscopy (STM), measurement of hydrogen gas evolution and measurement of the elements dissolved from the magnesium specimen which were determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrophotometry (ICPAES). A partially protective surface film was a principal factor controlling corrosion. Film coverage decreased with increasing applied electrode potential. Application of a suitable external cathodic current density was shown to inhibit magnesium dissolution whilst at the same time the hydrogen evolution rate was relatively small. This showed that cathodic protection could be used to significantly reduce magnesium corrosion. A new definition is proposed for the negative difference effect (NDE). (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

The aim of this study was to prospectively investigate the peak levels and kinetics of donor leucocyte chimerism in human recipients following liver transplantation, The peak levels of chimerism mere observed within the first 48 hours following transplantation and ranged from 0.15% to 20% of total peripheral blood mononuclear cells, In all but one patient, who developed graft versus host disease, there was an early peak level of chimerism that declined over time such that donor leukocytes mere only intermittently detectable after 3 to 4 weeks. In 8 patients who had no episodes of graft rejection, the peak level of donor leukocyte chimerism ranged from 1.3% to 20% (mean +/- SEM; 5.5% +/- 2.1%). In 3 patients who were treated for episodes of acute graft rejection during the first four postoperative weeks, the peak level of donor leukocyte chimerism ranged from 0.15% to 0.2% (0.18 +/- 0.02, P = .012), The results demonstrate a marked variation in the total number of donor leukocytes detectable in the peripheral blood early after liver transplantation and also, that lower levels of chimerism may be associated with lower rates of initial graft acceptance and a higher incidence of acute rejection.

7-ketocholesterol (7-KC) differs from cholesterol by a functional ketone group at C7. It is an oxygenated cholesterol derivative (oxysterol), commonly present in oxidized low-density lipoprotein (LDL). Oxysterols are generated and participate in several physiologic and pathophysiologic processes. For instance, the cytotoxic effects of oxidized LDL have been widely attributed to bioactive compounds like oxysterols. The toxicity is in part due to 7-KC. Here we aimed to demonstrate the possibility of incorporating 7-KC into the synthetic nanoemulsion LDE, which resembles LDL in composition and behavior. This would provide a suitable artificial particle resembling LDL to study 7-KC metabolism. We were able to incorporate 7-KC in several amounts into LDE. The incorporation was evaluated and confirmed by several methods, including gel filtration chromatography, using radiolabeled lipids. The incorporation did not change the main lipid composition characteristics of the new nanoparticle. Particle sizes were also evaluated and did not differ from LDE. In vivo studies were performed by injecting the nanoemulsion into mice. The plasma kinetics and the targeted organs were the same as described for LDE. Therefore, 7-KC-LDE maintains composition, size and some functional characteristics of LDE and could be used in experiments dealing with 7-ketocholesterol metabolism in lipoproteins.

The gel point of a dicyanate ester resin (Arocy B-10 (4-4'-dicyanato-2,2'-diphenylpropane)) heated following irradiation in the presence of the catalyst tricarbonyl cyclopentadienyl manganese (CpMn(CO)(3)) was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (d.s.c.) and dynamic rheological techniques over the temperature range 110-140 degrees C. The gel times of another commercial cyanate ester (RTX366) were also studied using independent rheological techniques, and the results agreed within experimental error. Gel times decreased linearly with increasing catalyst level and with increasing temperature according to an Arrhenius relation with activation energy of 68 +/- 6 kJmol(-1). The gel conversion was calculated by correlation of the rheological gel data to d.s.c. data to be 0.57 +/- 0.02, and differences between techniques, and between theoretical predictions, are discussed. Evidence is produced that the photocatalysed polymerization results in a greater rate of cyclotrimerization, less intramolecular cyclization and a more rigid network than the uncatalysed or metal salt-catalysed high-temperature polymerization.
