Renyi and von Neumann entropies quantifying the amount of entanglement in ground states of critical spin chains are known to satisfy a universal law which is given by the conformal field theory (CFT) describing their scaling regime. This law can be generalized to excitations described by primary fields in CFT, as was done by Alcaraz et al in 2011 (see reference [1], of which this work is a completion). An alternative derivation is presented, together with numerical verifications of our results in different models belonging to the c = 1, 1/2 universality classes. Oscillations of the Renyi entropy in excited states are also discussed.

Solvent effects on the one- and two-photon absorption (IPA and 2PA) of disperse orange 3 (DO3) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) are studied using a discrete polarizable embedding (PE) response theory. The scheme comprises a quantum region containing the chromophore and an atomically granulated classical region for the solvent accounting for full interactions within and between the two regions. Either classical molecular dynamics (MD) or hybrid Car-Parrinello (CP) quantum/classical (QM/MM) molecular dynamics simulations are employed to describe the solvation of DO3 in DMSO, allowing for an analysis of the effect of the intermolecular short-range repulsion, long-range attraction, and electrostatic interactions on the conformational changes of the chromophore and also the effect of the solute-solvent polarization. PE linear response calculations are performed to verify the character, solvatochromic shift, and overlap of the two lowest energy transitions responsible for the linear absorption spectrum of DO3 in DMSO in the visible spectral region. Results of the PE linear and quadratic response calculations, performed using uncorrelated solute-solvent configurations sampled from either the classical or hybrid CP QM/MM MD simulations, are used to estimate the width of the line shape function of the two electronic lowest energy excited states, which allow a prediction of the 2PA cross-sections without the use of empirical parameters. Appropriate exchange-correlation functionals have been employed in order to describe the charge-transfer process following the electronic transitions of the chromophore in solution.

In the present paper, we report on the molecular interaction and photochemistry of TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) and cytochrome c systems for understanding the effects of supramolecular organization and electron transfer by using two TiO2 structures: P25 TiO2 NPs and titanate nanotubes. The adsorption and reduction of cytochrome c heme iron promoted by photo-excited TiO2, arranged as P25 TiO2 NPs and as nanotubes, were characterized using electronic absorption spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and atomic force microscopy. In an aqueous buffered suspension (pH 8.0), the mass of cytochrome c adsorbed on the P25 TiO2 NP surface was 2.3 fold lower (0.75 mu g m(-2)) than that adsorbed on the titanate nanotubes (1.75 mu g m(-2)). Probably due to the high coverage of titanate nanotubes by adsorbed cytochrome c, the low amount of soluble remaining protein was not as efficiently photo-reduced by this nanostructure as it was by the P25 TiO2 NPs. Cytochrome c, which desorbed from both titanium materials, did not exhibit changes in its redox properties. In the presence of the TiO2 NPs, the photo-induced electron transfer from water to soluble cytochrome c heme iron was corroborated by the following findings: (i) identification by EPR of the hydroxyl radical production during the irradiation of an aqueous suspension of TiO2 NPs, (ii) impairment of a cytochrome c reduction by photo-excited TiO2 in the presence of dioxane, which affects the dielectric constant of the water, and (iii) change in the rate of TiO2-promoted cytochrome c reduction when water was replaced with D2O. The TiO2-promoted photo-reduction of cytochrome c was reverted by peroxides. Cytochrome c incorporated in the titanate nanotubes was also reversibly reduced under irradiation, as confirmed by EPR and UV-visible spectroscopy.

Two parametrically-induced phenomena are addressed in the context of a double pendulum subject to a vertical base excitation. First, the parametric resonances that cause the stable downward vertical equilibrium to bifurcate into large-amplitude periodic solutions are investigated extensively. Then the stabilization of the unstable upward equilibrium states through the parametric action of the high-frequency base motion is documented in the experiments and in the simulations. It is shown that there is a region in the plane of the excitation frequency and amplitude where all four unstable equilibrium states can be stabilized simultaneously in the double pendulum. The parametric resonances of the two modes of the base-excited double pendulum are studied both theoretically and experimentally. The transition curves (i.e., boundaries of the dynamic instability regions) are constructed asymptotically via the method of multiple scales including higher-order effects. The bifurcations characterizing the transitions from the trivial equilibrium to the periodic solutions are computed by either continuation methods and or by time integration and compared with the theoretical and experimental results.

Two-photon cooperative absorption is common in solid-state physics. In a sample of trapped cold atoms, this effect may open up new possibilities for the study of nonlinear effects. The experiment described herein starts with two colliding Na atoms in the S hyperfine ground state. The pair absorb two photons, resulting in both a P-1/2 and a P-3/2 atom. This excitation is observed by ionization using an external light source. A simple model that considers only dipole-dipole interactions between the atoms allows us to understand the basic features observed in the experimental results. Both the pair of generated atoms and the photons originating from their decay are correlated and may have interesting applications that remain to be explored.

Remote sensing has a high potential for environmental evaluation. However, a necessity exists for a better understanding of the relations between the soil attributes and spectral data. The objective of this work was to analyze the spectral behavior of some soil profiles from the region of Piracicaba, São Paulo State, using a laboratory spectroradiometer (400 to 2500 nm). The relations between the reflected electromagnetic energy and the soil physical, chemical and mineralogical attributes were analyzed, verifying the spectral variations of soil samples in depth along the profiles with their classification and discrimination. Sandy soil reflected more, presenting a spectral curve with an ascendant form, opposite to clayey soils. The 1900 nm band discriminated soil with 2:1 mineralogy from the 1:1 and oxidic soils. It was possible to detect the presence of kaolinite, gibbsite, hematite and goethite in the soils through the descriptive aspects of curves, absorption features and reflectance intensity. A relation exists between the weathering stage and spectral data. The evaluation of the superficial and subsuperficial horizon samples allowed characterizing and discriminating the analytical variability of the profile, helping to soil distinguishing and classification.

In the last years, extensive research has been devoted to develop novel materials and structures with high electrochemical performance for intermediate-temperatures solid-oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs) electrodes. In recent works, we have investigated the structural and electrochemical properties of La0:6Sr0:4CoO3 (LSCO) and La0:6Sr0:4Co1¡yFeyO3 (LSCFO) nanostructured cathodes, finding that they exhibit excellent electrocatalytic properties for the oxygen reduction reaction [1,2]. These materials were prepared by a pore-wetting technique using polycarbonate porous membranes as templates. Two average pore sizes were used: 200 nm and 800 nm. Our scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) study showed that the lower pore size yielded nanorods, while nanotubes were obtained with the bigger pore size. All the samples were calcined at 1000oC in order to produce materials with the desired perovskite-type crystal structure. In this work, we analyze the oxidation states of Co and Fe and the local atomic order of LSCO and LSCFO nanotubes and nanowires for various compositions. For this pur- pose we performed XANES and EXAFS studies on both Co and Fe K edges. These measurements were carried out at the D08B-XAFS2 beamline of the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS). XANES spectroscopy showed that Co and Fe only change slightly their oxidation state upon Fe addition. Surprisingly, XANES results indicated that the content of oxygen vacancies is low, even though it is well-known that these materials are mixed ionic-electronic conductors. EXAFS results were consistent with those expected according to the rhombohedral crystal structure determined in previous X-ray powder dffraction investigations. [1] M.G. Bellino et al, J. Am. Chem. Homo-oligofluorenes (OFn), polyfluorenes (PF2/6) and oligofluorenes with one fluorenenone group in the center (OFnK) were synthesized. They were used as model compounds to understand of the structure-property relationships of polyfluorenes and the origin of the green emission in the photoluminescence (after photooxidation of the PFs) and the electroluminescence (EL) spectra. The electronic, electrochemical properties, thermal behavior, supramolecular self-assembly, and photophysical properties of OFn, PF2/6 and OFnK were investigated. Oligofluorenes with 2-ethylhexyl side chain (OF2-OF7) from the dimer up to the heptamer were prepared by a series of stepwise transition metal mediated Suzuki and Yamamoto coupling reactions. Polyfluorene was synthesized by Yamamoto coupling of 2,7-dibromo-9,9-bis(2-ethylhexyl)fluorene. Oligofluorenes with one fluorenone group in the center (OF3K, OF5K, OF7K) were prepared by Suzuki coupling between the monoboronic fluorenyl monomer, dimer, trimer and 2, 7-dibromofluorenone. The electrochemical and electronic properties of homo-oligofluorenes (OFn) were systematically studied by several combined techniques such as cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, steady and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. It was found that the oligofluorenes behave like classical conjugated oligomers, i.e., with the increase of the chain-length, the corresponding oxidation potential, the absorption and emission maximum, ionization potential, electron affinity, band gap and the photoluminescence lifetime displayed a very good linear relation with the reciprocal number of the fluorene units (1/n). The extrapolation of these linear relations to infinite chain length predicted the electrochemical and electronic properties of the corresponding polyfluorenes. The thermal behavior, single-crystal structure and supramolecular packing, alignment properties, and molecular dynamics of the homo-oligofluorenes (OFn) up to the polymer were studied using techniques such as TGA, DSC, WAXS, POM and DS. The OFn from tetramer to heptamer show a smectic liquid crystalline phase with clearly defined isotropization temperature. The oligomers do show a glass transition which exhibits n-1 dependence and allows extrapolation to a hypothetical glass transition of the polymer at around 64 °C. A smectic packing and helix-like conformation for the oligofluorenes from tetramer to heptamer was supported by WAXS experiments, simulation, and single-crystal structure of some oligofluorene derivatives. Oligofluorenes were aligned more easily than the corresponding polymer, and the alignability increased with the molecular length from tetramer to heptamer. The molecular dynamics in a series of oligofluorenes up to the polymer was studied using dielectric spectroscopy. The photophysical properties of OFn and PF2/6 were investigated by the steady-state spectra (UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectra) and time-resolved fluorescence spectra both in solution and thin film. The time-resolved fluorescence spectra of the oligofluorenes were measured by streak camera and gate detection technique. The lifetime of the oligofluorenes decreased with the extension of the chain-length. No green emission was observed in CW, prompt and delayed fluorescence for oligofluorenes in m-THF and film at RT and 77K. Phosphorescence was observed for oligofluorenes in frozen dilute m-THF solution at 77K and its lifetime increased with length of oligofluorenes. A linear relation was obtained for triplet energy and singlet energy as a function of the reciprocal degree of polymerization, and the singlet-triplet energy gap (S1-T1) was found to decrease with the increase of degree of polymerization. Oligofluorenes with one fluorenone unit at the center were used as model compounds to understand the origin of the low-energy (“green”) emission band in the photoluminescence and electroluminescence spectra of polyfluorenes. Their electrochemical properties were investigated by CV, and the ionization potential (Ip) and electron affinity (Ea) were calculated from the onset of oxidation and reduction of OFnK. The photophysical properties of OFnK were studied in dilute solution and thin film by steady-state spectra and time-resolved fluorescence spectra. A strong green emission accompanied with a weak blue emission were obtained in solution and only green emission was observed on film. The strong green emission of OFnK suggested that rapid energy transfer takes place from higher energy sites (fluorene segments) to lower energy sites (fluorenone unit) prior to the radiative decay of the excited species. The fluorescence spectra of OFnK also showed solvatochromism. Monoexponential decay behaviour was observed by time-resolved fluorescence measurements. In addition, the site-selective excitation and concentration dependence of the fluorescence spectra were investigated. The ratio of green and blue emission band intensities increases with the increase of the concentration. The observed strong concentration dependence of the green emission band in solution suggests that increased interchain interactions among the fluorenone-containing oligofluorene chain enhanced the emission from the fluorenone defects at higher concentration. On the other hand, the mono-exponential decay behaviour and power dependence were not influenced significantly by the concentration. We have ruled out the possibility that the green emission band originates from aggregates or excimer formation. Energy transfer was further investigated using a model system of a polyfluorene doped by OFnK. Förster-type energy transfer took place from PF2/6 to OFnK, and the energy transfer efficiency increased with increasing of the concentration of OFnK. Efficient funneling of excitation energy from the high-energy fluorene segments to the low-energy fluorenone defects results from energy migration by hopping of excitations along a single polymer chain until they are trapped on the fluorenone defects on that chain or transferred onto neighbouring chains by Förster-type interchain energy transfer process. These results imply that the red-shifted emission in polyfluorenes can originate from (usually undesirable) keto groups at the bridging carbon atoms-especially if the samples have been subject to photo- or electro-oxidation or if fluorenone units are present due to an improper purification of the monomers prior to polymerization.

Studies in regions of the nuclear chart in which the model predictions of properties of nuclei fail can bring a better understanding of the strong interaction in the nuclear medium. To such regions belongs the so called "island of inversion" centered around Ne, Na and Mg isotopes with 20 neutrons in which unexpected ground-state spins, large deformations and dense low-energy spectra appear. This is a strong argument that the magic N = 20 is not a closed shell in this area. In this thesis investigations of isotope shifts of stable 24,25,26Mg, as well as spins and magnetic moments of short-lived 29,31Mg are presented. The successful studies were performed at the ISOLDE facility at CERN using collinear laser and beta-NMR spectroscopy techniques. The isotopes were investigated as single-charged ions in the 280-nm transition from the atomic ground state 2S1/2 to one of the two lowest excited states 2P1/2,3/2 using continuous wave laser beams. The isotope-shift measurements with fluorescence detection for the three stable isotopes show that it is feasible to perform the same studies on radioactive Mg isotopes up to the "island of inversion". This will allow to determine differences in the mean charge square radii and interpret them in terms of deformation. The high detection efficiency for beta particles and optical pumping close to saturation allowed to obtain very good beta-asymmetry signals for 29Mg and 31Mg with half-lives around 1 s and production yields about 10^5 ions/s. For this purpose the ions were implanted into a host crystal lattice. Such detection of the atomic resonances revealed their hyperfine structure, which gives the sign and a first estimate of the value of the magnetic moment. The nuclear magnetic resonance gave also their g-factors with the relative uncertainty smaller than 0.2 %. By combining the two techniques also the nuclear spin of both isotopes could be unambiguously determined. The measured spins and g-factors show that 29Mg with 17 neutrons lies outside the "island of inversion". On the other hand, 31Mg with 19 neutrons has an unexpected ground-state spin which can be explained only by promoting at least two neutrons across the N = 20 shell gap. This places the above nucleus inside the "island". However, modern shell-model approaches cannot predict this level as the ground state but only as one of the low-lying states, even though they reproduce very well the experimental g-factor. This indicates that modifications to the available interactions are required. Future measurements include isotope shift measurements on radioactive Mg isotopes and beta-NMR studies on 33Mg.

The Li-rich layered transition metal oxides (LLOs) Li2MnO3-LiMO2 (M=Mn, Co, Ni, etc.) have drawn considerable attention as cathode materials for rechargeable lithium batteries. They generate large reversible capacities but the fundamental reaction mechanism and structural perturbations during cycling remain controversial. In the present thesis, ex situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements were performed on Li[Li0.2Mn0.56Ni0.16Co0.08]O2 at different stage of charge during electrochemical oxidation/reduction. K-edge spectra of Co, Mn and Ni were recorded through a voltage range of 3.7-4.8V vs. Li/Li+, which consist of X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). Oxidation states during initial charge were discussed based on values from literature as well as XANES analysis. Information about bond distance, coordination number as well as corresponding Debye-Waller factor were extracted from Gnxas analysis of raw data in the EXAFS region. The possibility of oxygen participation in the initial charge was discussed. Co and Ni prove to take part in the oxidation/reduction process while Mn remain in the tetravalent state. The cathode material appears to retain good structural short-range order during charge-discharge. A resemblance of the pristine sample and sample 4 was discovered which was firstly reported for similar compounds.

Advances in metastability exchange optical pumping (MEOP) of 3He at high laser powers, with its various applications, but also at high gas pressures p3 and high magnetic field strengths B, have provided strong motivation for revisiting the understanding and for investigating the limitations of this powerful technique. For this purpose, we present systematic experimental and theoretical studies of efficiency and of relaxation mechanisms in B≤30 mT and p3=0.63−2.45 mbar. 3He nuclear polarisation is measured by light absorption in longitudinal configuration where weak light beams at 1083 nm parallel to magnetic field and cell axis with opposite circular polarisations are used to probe the distribution of populations in the metastable state. This method is systematically tested to evaluate potential systematic biases and is shown to be reliable for the study of OP dynamics despite the redistribution of populations by OP light. Nuclear polarisation loss associated to the emission of polarised light by the plasma discharge used for MEOP is found to decrease above 10 mT, as expected, due to hyperfine decoupling in highly excited states. However, this does not lead to improved MEOP efficiency at high laser power. We find clear evidence of additional laser-induced relaxation instead. The strong OP-enhanced polarisation losses, currently limiting MEOP performances, are quantitatively investigated using an angular momentum budget approach and a recently developed comprehensive model that describes the combined effects of OP, ME and relaxation, validated by comparison to experimental results.

This thesis deals with the investigation of exciton and charge dynamics in hybrid solar cells by time-resolved optical spectroscopy. Quasi-steady-state and transient absorption spectroscopy, as well as time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy, were employed to study charge generation and recombination in solid-state organic dye-sensitized solar cells, where the commonly used liquid electrolyte is replaced by an organic solid hole transporter, namely 2,2′7,7′-tetrakis-(N,N-di-p-methoxyphenyl-amine)-9,9′-spirobifluorene (spiro-MeOTAD), and polymer-metal oxide bulk heterojunction solar cells, where the commonly used fullerene acceptor [6,6]-phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) is replaced by zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles. By correlating the spectroscopic results with the photovoltaic performance, efficiency-limiting processes and processes leading to photocurrent generation in the investigated systems are revealed. rnIt is shown that the charge generation from several all-organic donor-π-bridge-acceptor dyes, specifically perylene monoimide derivatives, employed in solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells, is strongly dependent on the presence of a commonly used additive lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulphonyl)imide salt (Li-TFSI) at the interface. rnMoreover, it is shown that charges can not only be generated by electron injection from the excited dye into the TiO2 acceptor and subsequent regeneration of the dye cation by the hole transporter, but also by an alternative mechanism, called preceding hole transfer (or reductive quenching). Here, the excited dye is first reduced by the hole transporter and the thereby formed anion subsequently injects an electron into the titania. This additional charge generation process, which is only possible for solid hole transporters, helps to overcome injection problems. rnHowever, a severe disadvantage of solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells is re-vealed by monitoring the transient Stark effect on dye molecules at the inter-face induced by the electric field between electrons and holes. The attraction between the negative image charge present in TiO2, which is induced by the positive charge carrier in the hole transporter due to the dielectric contrast between the organic spiro-MeOTAD and inorganic titania, is sufficient to at-tract the hole back to the interface, thereby increasing recombination and suppressing the extraction of free charges.rnBy investigating the effect of different dye structures and physical properties on charge generation and recombination, design rules and guidelines for the further advancement of solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells are proposed.rnFinally, a spectroscopic study on polymer:ZnO bulk heterojunction hybrid solar cells, employing different surfactants attached to the metal oxide nanoparticles, was performed to understand the effect of surfactants upon photovoltaic behavior. By applying a parallel pool analysis on the transient absorption data, it is shown that suppressing fast recombination while simultaneously maintaining the exciton splitting efficiency by the right choice of surfactants leads to better photovoltaic performances. Suppressing the fast recombination completely, whilst maintaining the exciton splitting, could lead to a doubling of the power conversion efficiency of this type of solar cell.

The energetics, structures, stabilities and reactivities of[CnH2]2+ ions have been investigated using computational methods and experimental mass spectrometric techniques. Spontaneous decompositions of [CnH2]2+ into [CnH]+ + H+ products, observed for ions with odd-n values, have been explained by invoking the formation of excited triplet states. Even-n [CnH]+ ions possess triplet ground states with low-lying excited states, whereas odd-n ions have triplet states with energies several eV above ground singlet states. Radiationless transitions of vibrationally excited long-lived triplet state ions into singlet state continua are suggested as possible mechanisms for spontaneous deprotonation processes of odd-n [CnH2]2+ ions. Evidence for these long-lived excited states has been obtained in bimolecular single electron transfer reactions.
