Synchronous decade up/down counter

Sequential up/down counting is required many a time. In this paper, the logical design of such a counter of the parallel carry type is furnished.

Surface Discharge Studies with Uniform Field Electrodes at Low Pressures

An investigation of power frequency (50 Hz) surface partial discharges in dry air, using 21r/3 Rogowski profile electrodes in the low pressure range of 0.067 to 91.333 kPa, shows that for the discharges occurring symmetrically around the electrodes and just outside the uniform field region, the breakdown voltages are 20 to 30% lower than those accounted for by the usual Paschen values. Emphasis, therefore, has been given to modified values of breakdown voltages for any useful calculations. The effect of reduced pressure on inception voltage has been discussed and an attempt has been made to explain the difference between the observed and calculated values on the basis of a pressure-dependent secondary ionization coefficient. It is shown that increasing the insulation thickness in a critical pressure range (0.067 to 0.400 kPa) does not allow any significant increase in the discharge free working stress of the insulation system. At higher pressures (>0.400 kPa) the increase in inception voltage with thickness and pressure follows an equation which is expected to hold for other insulating materials as well.

Systematic search for optical Barker codes with minimum length

A method that yields optical Barker codes of smallest known lengths for given discrimination is described.

Influence of rapid thermal annealing (RTA) on the structural and electrical properties of SnS films

The performance of optoelectronic devices critically depends on the quality of active layer. An effective way to obtain a high quality layers is by creating excess of metal atoms through various heat treatments. Recently, rapid thermal annealing (RTA) has proved a versatile technique for the post-treatment of semiconductor materials as compared to other techniques due to its precise control over the resources. Thus, we carried out a set of experiments on SnS films to explore the influence of RTA treatment on their properties. From these experiments we noticed that the films treated at 400 °C for 1 min in N2 atmosphere have a low electrical resistivity of ~5 Ωcm with relatively high Hall mobility and carrier density of 99 cm2/Vs and 1.3 × 1016 cm−3, respectively. The observed results, therefore, emphasise that it is possible to obtain good quality SnS films through RTA treatment without disturbing their crystal structure.

Harmonic Analysis of Advanced Bus-Clamping PWM Techniques

Special switching sequences can be employed in space-vector-based generation of pulsewidth-modulated (PWM) waveforms for voltage-source inverters. These sequences involve switching a phase twice, switching the second phase once, and clamping the third phase in a subcycle. Advanced bus-clamping PWM (ABCPWM) techniques have been proposed recently that employ such switching sequences. This letter studies the spectral properties of the waveforms produced by these PWM techniques. Further, analytical closed-form expressions are derived for the total rms harmonic distortion due to these techniques. It is shown that the ABCPWM techniques lead to lower distortion than conventional space vector PWM and discontinuous PWM at higher modulation indexes. The findings are validated on a 2.2-kW constant $V/f$ induction motor drive and also on a 100-kW motor drive.

Multistage monostable multivibrator using load-coupled regenerative feedback

A monostable multivibrator configuration using a new technique of regenerative feedback is discussed. This circuit provides an elegant alternative in situations wherein several monostable multivibrators have to be connected in tandem.

Design of a synchronous decade down counter

Digital positioning systems often require a down counter for their operation. Due to the necessity of particular logic sequences and control of individual terminals, the design of down counters for particular use is very essential. In this paper the design procedure and logic diagram for a synchronous decade down counter with parallel carry are presented.

Estimation of Execution Times of Process Control Algorithms on Microcomputers

An important question which has to be answered in evaluting the suitability of a microcomputer for a control application is the time it would take to execute the specified control algorithm. In this paper, we present a method of obtaining closed-form formulas to estimate this time. These formulas are applicable to control algorithms in which arithmetic operations and matrix manipulations dominate. The method does not require writing detailed programs for implementing the control algorithm. Using this method, the execution times of a variety of control algorithms on a range of 16-bit mini- and recently announced microcomputers are calculated. The formulas have been verified independently by an analysis program, which computes the execution time bounds of control algorithms coded in Pascal when they are run on a specified micro- or minicomputer.

Logical design of a negative binary adder-subtracter

Two different designs for negative binary adder-subtracter are compared. Ono design uses the method of a hybrid-carry—borrow, while the other 11303 the method of polarization and addition.

A simple non-linear D/A converter

A simple generalized technique for realizing a non-linear digital to analogue converter (N-DAC), based on the principles of ' segment of equal digital interval ' is described. The simplicity of the proposed technique is demonstrated by realizing an N-DAC having a square law transfer function.

Ternary function and circuit design using ternary multiplexers

The recent trend towards minimizing the interconnections in large scale integration (LSI) circuits has led to intensive investigation in the development of ternary circuits and the improvement of their design. The ternary multiplexer is a convenient and useful logic module which can be used as a basic building block in the design of a ternary system. This paper discusses a systematic procedure for the simplification and realization of ternary functions using ternary multiplexers as building blocks. Both single level and multilevel multiplexing techniques are considered. The importance of the design procedure is highlighted by considering two specific applications, namely, the development of ternary adder/subtractor and TCD to ternary converter.

Block- and strand-multiplexing for fast computation of a class of transforms

The transforms dealt with in this paper are defined in terms of the transform kernels which are Kroneeker products of the two or more component kernels. The signal flow-graph for the computation of such a transform is obtained with the flow-graphs for the component transforms as building blocks.

Inductor realisation using a finite gain differential amplifier

A finite gain differential amplifier is used along with a few passive RC elements to simulate an inductor. Methods for obtaining low Q inductance and frequency dependent high QI inductance are described. Sensitivity analysis when the gain varies is also included.

Optical Barker sequences and self-orthogonal convolutional codes

The relation between optical Barker codes and self-orthogonal convolutional codes is pointed out. It is then used to update the results in earlier publication.
