Multi-packet reception (MPR) promises significant throughput gains in wireless local area networks (WLANs) by allowing nodes to transmit even in the presence of ongoing transmissions in the medium. However, the medium access control (MAC) layer must now be redesigned to facilitate rather than discourage - these overlapping transmissions. We investigate asynchronous MPR MAC protocols, which successfully accomplish this by controlling the node behavior based on the number of ongoing transmissions in the channel. The protocols use the backoff timer mechanism of the distributed coordination function, which makes them practically appealing. We first highlight a unique problem of acknowledgment delays, which arises in asynchronous MPR, and investigate a solution that modifies the medium access rules to reduce these delays and increase system throughput in the single receiver scenario. We develop a general renewal-theoretic fixed-point analysis that leads to expressions for the saturation throughput, packet dropping probability, and average head-of-line packet delay. We also model and analyze the practical scenario in which nodes may incorrectly estimate the number of ongoing transmissions.

This paper presents a multi-class support vector machine (SVMs) approach for locating and diagnosing faults in electric power distribution feeders with the penetration of Distributed Generations (DGs). The proposed approach is based on the three phase voltage and current measurements which are available at all the sources i.e. substation and at the connection points of DG. To illustrate the proposed methodology, a practical distribution feeder emanating from 132/11kV-grid substation in India with loads and suitable number of DGs at different locations is considered. To show the effectiveness of the proposed methodology, practical situations in distribution systems (DS) such as all types of faults with a wide range of varying fault locations, source short circuit (SSC) levels and fault impedances are considered for studies. The proposed fault location scheme is capable of accurately identify the fault type, location of faulted feeder section and the fault impedance. The results demonstrate the feasibility of applying the proposed method in practical in smart grid distribution automation (DA) for fault diagnosis.

The synergistic effect of compressive growth stresses and reactor chemistry, silane presence, on dislocation bending at the very early stages of GaN growth has been studied using in-situ stress measurements and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy. A single 100 nm Si-doped GaN layer is found to be more effective than a 1 mu m linearly graded AlGaN buffer layer in reducing dislocation density and preventing the subsequent layer from transitioning to a tensile stress. 1 mu m crack-free GaN layers with a dislocation density of 7 x 10(8)/cm(2), with 0.13 nm surface roughness and no enhancement in n-type background are demonstrated over 2 inch substrates using this simple transition scheme. This article reports the acoustic emission (AE) study of precursory micro-cracking activity and fracture behaviour of quasi-brittle materials such as concrete and cement mortar. In the present study, notched three-point bend specimens (TPB) were tested under crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) control at a rate of 0.0004 mm/sec and the accompanying AE were recorded using a 8 channel AE monitoring system. The various AE statistical parameters including AE event rate , AE energy release rate , amplitude distribution for computing the AE based b-value, cumulative energy (I E) pound and ring down count (RDC) were used for the analysis. The results show that the micro-cracks initiated and grew at an early stage in mortar in the pre peak regime. While in the case of concrete, the micro-crack growth occurred during the peak load regime. However, both concrete and mortar showed three distinct stages of micro-cracking activity, namely initiation, stable growth and nucleation prior to the final failure. The AE statistical behavior of each individual stage is dependent on the number and size distribution of micro-cracks. The results obtained in the laboratory are useful to understand the various stages of micro-cracking activity during the fracture process in quasi-brittle materials such as concrete & mortar and extend them for field applications.

Multivariate neural data provide the basis for assessing interactions in brain networks. Among myriad connectivity measures, Granger causality (GC) has proven to be statistically intuitive, easy to implement, and generate meaningful results. Although its application to functional MRI (fMRI) data is increasing, several factors have been identified that appear to hinder its neural interpretability: (a) latency differences in hemodynamic response function (HRF) across different brain regions, (b) low-sampling rates, and (c) noise. Recognizing that in basic and clinical neuroscience, it is often the change of a dependent variable (e.g., GC) between experimental conditions and between normal and pathology that is of interest, we address the question of whether there exist systematic relationships between GC at the fMRI level and that at the neural level. Simulated neural signals were convolved with a canonical HRF, down-sampled, and noise-added to generate simulated fMRI data. As the coupling parameters in the model were varied, fMRI GC and neural GC were calculated, and their relationship examined. Three main results were found: (1) GC following HRF convolution is a monotonically increasing function of neural GC; (2) this monotonicity can be reliably detected as a positive correlation when realistic fMRI temporal resolution and noise level were used; and (3) although the detectability of monotonicity declined due to the presence of HRF latency differences, substantial recovery of detectability occurred after correcting for latency differences. These results suggest that Granger causality is a viable technique for analyzing fMRI data when the questions are appropriately formulated.

We address the problem of temporal envelope modeling for transient audio signals. We propose the Gamma distribution function (GDF) as a suitable candidate for modeling the envelope keeping in view some of its interesting properties such as asymmetry, causality, near-optimal time-bandwidth product, controllability of rise and decay, etc. The problem of finding the parameters of the GDF becomes a nonlinear regression problem. We overcome the hurdle by using a logarithmic envelope fit, which reduces the problem to one of linear regression. The logarithmic transformation also has the feature of dynamic range compression. Since temporal envelopes of audio signals are not uniformly distributed, in order to compute the amplitude, we investigate the importance of various loss functions for regression. Based on synthesized data experiments, wherein we have a ground truth, and real-world signals, we observe that the least-squares technique gives reasonably accurate amplitude estimates compared with other loss functions.

In this paper, we evaluate the performance of a burst retransmission method for an optical burst switched network with intermediate-node-initiation (INI) signaling technique. The proposed method tries to reduce the burst contention probability at the intermediate core nodes. We develop an analytical model to get the burst contention probability and burst loss probability for an optical burst switched network with intermediate-node-initiation signaling technique. The proposed method uses the optical burst retransmission method. We simulate the performance of the optical burst retransmission. Simulation results show that at low traffic loads the loss probability is low compared to the conventional burst retransmission in the OBS network. Result also show that the retransmission method for OBS network with intermediate-node-initiation signaling technique significantly reduces the burst loss probability.

Regenerating codes are a class of codes proposed for providing reliability of data and efficient repair of failed nodes in distributed storage systems. In this paper, we address the fundamental problem of handling errors and erasures at the nodes or links, during the data-reconstruction and node-repair operations. We provide explicit regenerating codes that are resilient to errors and erasures, and show that these codes are optimal with respect to storage and bandwidth requirements. As a special case, we also establish the capacity of a class of distributed storage systems in the presence of malicious adversaries. While our code constructions are based on previously constructed Product-Matrix codes, we also provide necessary and sufficient conditions for introducing resilience in any regenerating code.

Nanoindentation is a technique which can be used to measure the mechanical properties of materials with high precision, even when they are only available in small quantities. As a result of this, nanoindentation has gained the attention of the crystal engineering community, who are not only interested in measuring the properties of single crystals of organic, inorganic and hybrid structures, but also wish to correlate the measured responses with the underlying structural features and intermolecular interactions. Keeping this emerging interest in view, a brief overview of the technique, with particular emphasis on the procedures for conducting experiments and analyzing the resulting data, is presented in this Tutorial style Highlight. The precautions that need to be taken and the properties that one can measure using nanoindentation are highlighted. This paper ends with a brief summary of the recent additional features that have been added to this technique and an outlook for nanoindentation within the context of crystal engineering.

Silver Indium Di-sulfide (AgInS2) thin films are deposited using ultrasonic spray pyrolysis technique and the effect of substrate temperature (T-s) on film growth is studied by varying the temperature from 250 to 400 degrees C. From the structural analysis, orthorhombic AgInS2 phase is identified with preferential orientation along (002) plane. Further analysis with Raman revealed the coexistence of Cu-Au ordered and chalcopyrite structures in the films. Stoichiometric films are obtained at T-s of 300 degrees C. Above 300 degrees C, the film conductivity changed from p to n-type and the grain size decreased. The band gap of AgInS2 films varied from 1.55 to 1.89 eV and absorption coefficient is found to be >10(4) cm(-1). The films have sheet resistance in the range of 0.05 to 1300 Omega/square Both p and n type films are prepared through this technique without any external doping. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. In wireless sensor networks (WSNs) the communication traffic is often time and space correlated, where multiple nodes in a proximity start transmitting at the same time. Such a situation is known as spatially correlated contention. The random access methods to resolve such contention suffers from high collision rate, whereas the traditional distributed TDMA scheduling techniques primarily try to improve the network capacity by reducing the schedule length. Usually, the situation of spatially correlated contention persists only for a short duration and therefore generating an optimal or sub-optimal schedule is not very useful. On the other hand, if the algorithm takes very large time to schedule, it will not only introduce additional delay in the data transfer but also consume more energy. To efficiently handle the spatially correlated contention in WSNs, we present a distributed TDMA slot scheduling algorithm, called DTSS algorithm. The DTSS algorithm is designed with the primary objective of reducing the time required to perform scheduling, while restricting the schedule length to maximum degree of interference graph. The algorithm uses randomized TDMA channel access as the mechanism to transmit protocol messages, which bounds the message delay and therefore reduces the time required to get a feasible schedule. The DTSS algorithm supports unicast, multicast and broadcast scheduling, simultaneously without any modification in the protocol. The protocol has been simulated using Castalia simulator to evaluate the run time performance. Simulation results show that our protocol is able to considerably reduce the time required to schedule.

We report on the rectification properties from a single ZnS nanorod measured using the UHV-SPM technique. The rectification behavior is evidenced from the current-voltage characteristics measured on a single ZnS nanorod. We propose a tunneling mechanism where the direct tunneling mechanism is dominant at lower applied bias voltages followed by resonant tunneling through discrete energy levels of the nanorod. A further increase in the bias voltage changes the tunneling mechanism to the Fowler-Nordheim tunneling regime enabling rectification behavior. Realizing rectification from a single ZnS nanorod may provide a means of realizing a single nanorod based miniaturized device.

A guidance law derived by modifying state dependent Riccati equation technique, to enable the imposition of a predetermined terminal intercept angle to a maneuvering target, is presented in this paper. The interceptor is assumed to have no knowledge about the type of maneuver the target is executing. The problem is cast in a non-cooperative game theoretic form. The guidance law obtained is dependent on the LOS angular rotational rate and on the impact angle error. Theoretical conditions which guarantee existence of solutions under this method have been derived. It is shown that imposing the impact angle constraint calls for an increase in the gains of the guidance law considerably, subsequently requiring a higher maneuverability advantage of the interceptor. The performance of the proposed guidance law is studied using a non-linear two dimensional simulation of the relative kinematics, assuming first order dynamics for the interceptor and target.

Opportunistic selection selects the node that improves the overall system performance the most. Selecting the best node is challenging as the nodes are geographically distributed and have only local knowledge. Yet, selection must be fast to allow more time to be spent on data transmission, which exploits the selected node's services. We analyze the impact of imperfect power control on a fast, distributed, splitting based selection scheme that exploits the capture effect by allowing the transmitting nodes to have different target receive powers and uses information about the total received power to speed up selection. Imperfect power control makes the received power deviate from the target and, hence, affects performance. Our analysis quantifies how it changes the selection probability, reduces the selection speed, and leads to the selection of no node or a wrong node. We show that the effect of imperfect power control is primarily driven by the ratio of target receive powers. Furthermore, we quantify its effect on the net system throughput.

This study presents the response of a vertically loaded pile in undrained clay considering spatially distributed undrained shear strength. The probabilistic study is performed considering undrained shear strength as random variable and the analysis is conducted using random field theory. The inherent soil variability is considered as source of variability and the field is modeled as two dimensional non-Gaussian homogeneous random field. Random field is simulated using Cholesky decomposition technique within the finite difference program and Monte Carlo simulation approach is considered for the probabilistic analysis. The influence of variance and spatial correlation of undrained shear strength on the ultimate capacity as summation of ultimate skin friction and end bearing resistance of pile are examined. It is observed that the coefficient of variation and spatial correlation distance are the most important parameters that affect the pile ultimate capacity.
