Objectives: This study investigated in situ the effect of iron (Fe) on the reduction of demineralization of bovine enamel, as well as on the composition of dental biofilm.Design and methods: Twelve volunteers were included in this blind crossover study, which was conducted in two stages of 14 days each. For each stage, the volunteers received palatal appliances containing four blocks of bovine enamel (4 mm x 4 mm x 2.5 mm). Six volunteers dripped a solution of 15 mmol L-1 ferrous sulphate onto the fragments and the remaining six dripped deionized water (eight times per day). After five minutes, a fresh 20% (w/v) sucrose solution was dripped onto all enamel blocks. During the experimental period the volunteers brushed their teeth with non-fluoridated dentifrice. After each stage, the percentage of surface microhardness change (%SMHC) and area of mineral toss (Delta Z) were determined on enamel and the dental biofilm formed on the blocks was collected and analysed for F, P, Ca, Fe and alkali-soluble carbohydrates. The concentrations of F, Ca and Fe in enamel were also analysed after acid biopsies. Results: There was a statistically significant increase in the P and Fe concentrations in the biofilms treated with ferrous sulphate (p < 0.05), which was not observed for F, Ca and alkali-soluble carbohydrates. The group treated with ferrous sulphate had significantly lower %SMHC and Delta Z when compared to control (p < 0.05).Conclusions: These results showed that ferrous sulphate reduced the demineralization of enamel blocks and altered the ionic composition of the dental biofilm formed in situ. Surface modifications have been applied in endosteal bone devices in order to improve the osseointegration through direct contact between neoformed bone and the implant without an intervening soft tissue layer. Surface characteristics of titanium implants have been modified by addictive methods, such as metallic titanium, titanium oxide and hydroxyapatite powder plasma spray, as well as by subtractive methods, such as acid etching, acid etching associated with sandblasting by either AlO2 or TiO2, and recently by laser ablation. Surface modification for dental and medical implants can be obtained by using laser irradiation technique where its parameters like repetition rate, pulse energy, scanning speed and fluency must be taken into accounting to the appropriate surface topography. Surfaces of commercially pure Ti (cpTi) were modified by laser Nd:YVO4 in nine different parameters configurations, all under normal atmosphere. The samples were characterized by SEM and XRD refined by Rietveld method. The crystalline phases alpha Ti, beta Ti, Ti6O, Ti3O and TiO were formed by the melting and fast cooling processes during irradiation. The resulting phases on the irradiated surface were correlated with the laser beam parameters: the aim of the present work was to control titanium oxides formations in order to improve implants osseointegration by using a laser irradiation technique which is of great importance to biomaterial devices due to being a clean and reproducible process. Pressure drop and minimum fluidization velocity were experimentally studied in a vibro-fluidized bed of inert particles subjected to different vibration intensities during drying of guava pulp. Maltodextrin was added to the pulp in order to prevent stickiness between particles and the consequent bed collapse. Pulps were initially concentrated, resulting in pastes with different soluble solids content, and a constant fraction of maltodextrin was guaranteed in the final pulp samples. The pulp rheological behavior as affected by temperature and total soluble solids content, including maltodextrin, was evaluated and the effect of pulp apparent viscosity on pressure drop and minimum vibro-fluidization velocity were investigated. Two types of inert particles -3.6 mm glass beads and 3 mm Teflon cylinders were tested and, due to lower pressure drop presented by Teflon cylinders during operation of the dry vibro-fluidized bed, these particles were adopted for pulp drying process. Increasing pulp apparent viscosity caused a considerable increase in the vibro-fluidized bed pressure drop during pulp drying and, as a consequence resulted in a larger value of minimum vibro-fluidization velocity. on the other hand, the negative effect of increasing apparent viscosity could be attenuated by increasing the fluidized bed vibration intensity, which could prevent stickiness between particles. Moisture equilibrium data of pineapple pulp (PP) powders with and without additives - 18% maltodextrin (MD) or 18% gum Arabic (GA) - were determined at 20, 30, 40 and 50 degrees C by using the static gravimetric method in a water activity range of 0.06-0.90. The obtained isotherms were sigmoid, typical type 111, and the Guggenhein-Anderson-de Boer (GAB) model was fitted to the experimental data of equilibrium moisture content versus water activity. Addition of additives was shown to affect the isotherms in such a way that, at the same water activity, samples PP + GA and PP + MD presented lower equilibrium moisture content and were not so affected by varying temperature. The net isosteric heats of sorption of pulp powders with additives were higher (less negative) than those of pineapple pulp powders, suggesting that there are more active polar sites in the product without addition of GA or MD. An empirical exponential relationship could describe the heat of sorption dependence on the material moisture content. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Metallographic studies carried out for Tytin-Plus and Dispersalloy amalgams show a porous multiphase material, whose surface phases are: gamma-(Ag3Sn), gamma(1)-(Ag2Hg3), eta'-(Cu6Sn5) and epsilon-(Cu3Sn). Additionally, Dispersalloy is present in the Ag-Cu eutectic. The application of surface analysis by SEM reveal a heterogeneous distribution of the above mentioned phases. Microstructures consisting of colonies or clusters were not observed. The corrosion testing of these materials was done in 0.9% NaCl aerated solution at 25 degrees C using potentiodynamic polarization curves and ac impedance measurements. The corrosion process in these multiphase systems can be interpreted as the sum of more than one electrodissolution process and the posterior formation of corrosion films. on each electrode, the corrosion film is formed by different mechanisms. This article discusses the development of a test bench and a methodology for the study of composite resin abrasive wear. To evaluate the operation of the test bench and to compare the proposed methodology with other existing ones, a study was made of the five composites most commonly used by dentists. The one-way ANOVA method and the Tukey test were used to statistically analyze the results by multiple comparisons of the groups of resins tested. Using the proposed methodology, these resins were classified in an increasing order of abrasive wear strength, as follows: Charisma (the lowest abrasive wear strength), Tetric, TPH, Herculite and Z-100 (the highest abrasive wear strength) (P < 0.05). In comparison to other methodologies, the results of the proposed methodology presented the lowest coefficient of variation. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

A quantitative study was made about the effects caused by ionizing irradiation on materials used for dental restoration (amalgams, compound resins and compomere), aiming to alleviate in bearers of head and neck cancer, the possible harmful effects of radiotherapy perceived when the repaired teething is within the radiation field. Research also encourages further studies for new alternative materials to be used in dental repair of patients submitted to radiotherapy for head and neck cancer. Test samples were submitted to a gamma radiation beam coming from a cobalt-therapy source and analyzed according to the X-ray fluorescence technique, comparing the chemical composition of the samples before and after irradiation. Radiation detectors such as an ionization chamber and a Geiger-Muller were used to measure the rate of residual dose. Gamma spectrometry with Nal detectors was also performed on the same samples. Results showed that there was no significant change in the chemical composition and that at post-irradiation, samples did not exhibit radiation emission, that is to say they had not become radioactive.
