UV absorption spectra of five methyl-substituted hydroxy-cyclohexadienyl radicals, formed by the addition of the hydroxyl radical (OH) to toluene (methyl benzene), o-, m- and p-xylene (1,2-, 1,3- and 1,4-dimethyl benzene, respectively) and mesitylene (1,3,5-trimethylbenzene), have been determined at 298 K, 1 atm pressure (N-2 + O-2), and the corresponding absolute absorption cross-sections measured, using laser flash photolysis and time-resolved UV absorption detection. As observed for other cyclohexadienyl-type radicals, a strong absorption band is present in the 260-340 nm spectral region, with maximum cross-sections in the range (0.9-2.2) x 10(-17) cm(2) molecule(-1). The shape of the band varies significantly from one radical to the next for the series of aromatic precursors investigated. The nature and yields of hydroxylated ring-retaining oxidation products, identified in previous studies of the OH-initiated oxidation of aromatic hydrocarbons, and the results of theoretical density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that one or more possible isomers of the various OH-adducts may contribute to the observed spectra. Isomers where the OH-group is ortho- (or both ortho- and ipso-) to a substituent methyl-group are likely to be the most abundant but other isomers may also be formed to a significant extent. Nonetheless, the present study provides absorption spectra of the adduct radicals formed from the gas phase addition of OH to the aromatic hydrocarbons considered, near room temperature and I atm pressure. We present a combined quantitative low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and density-functional theory (DFT) study of the chiral Cu{531} surface. The surface shows large inward relaxations with respect to the bulk interlayer distance of the first two layers and a large expansion of the distance between the fourth and fifth layers. (The latter is the first layer having the same coordination as the Cu atoms in the bulk.) Additional calculations have been performed to study the likelihood of faceting by comparing surface energies of possible facet terminations. No overall significant reduction in energy with respect to planar {531} could be found for any of the tested combinations of facets, which is in agreement with the experimental findings.

The adsorption of alanine on Cu {110} was studied by a combination of near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT). Large chemical shifts in the C 1s, N 1s, and O 1s XP spectra were found between the alanine multilayer and the chemisorbed and pseudo-(3 x 2) alaninate layers. From C, N, and O K-shell NEXAFS spectra the tilt angles of the carboxylate group (approximate to 26 degrees in plane with respect to [1 (1) over bar0] and approximate to 45 degrees out of plane) and the C-N bond angle with respect to [1 (1) over bar0] could be determined for the pseudo-(3 x 2) overlayer. Using this information three adsorption geometries could be eliminated from five p(3 x 2) structures which lead to almost identical heats of adsorption in the DFT calculations between 1.40 and 1.47 eV/molecule. Due to the small energy difference between the remaining two structures it is not unlikely that these coexist on the surface at room temperature. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Reaction of [M(NCCH3)(4)][PF6] (M = Ag, Cu) with the S2P2Me4 ligand in dichloromethane solution led to substitution of all the nitrile ligands by two molecules of the sulfur ligand, affording the new species [Ag(S2P2Me4)(2)][PF6] (1) and [Cu(S2P2Me4)(2)][PF6] (2). The structures of these complexes were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. showing the expected tetrahedral coordination around each metal. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed the different geometries and energies of the free and coordinated ligand, and provided a very good reproduction of the experimental structures, both for Ag and Cu. The lengths of the S=P bonds are barely affected by coordination, indicating that the pi bond is not important in binding to the metal. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The mechanism of the Heck reaction has been studied with regard to transition metal catalysis of the addition of propene and the formation of unsaturated polymers. The reactivity of nickel and palladium complexes with five different bidentate ligands with O,N donor atoms has been investigated by computational methods involving density functional theory. Hence, it is possible to understand the electronic and steric factors affecting the reaction and their relative importance in determining the products formed in regard of their control of the regiochemistry of the products. Our results show that whether the initial addition of propene is trans to O or to N of the bidentate ligand is of crucial importance to the subsequent reactions. Thus when the propene is trans to 0, 1,2-insertion is favoured, but when the propene is trans to N, then 2,1-insertion is favoured. This difference in the preferred insertion pathway can be related to the charge distribution engendered in the propene moiety when the complex is formed. Indeed charge effects are important for catalytic activity but also for regioselectivity. Steric effects are shown to be of lesser importance even when t-butyl is introduced into the bidentate ligand as a substituent. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The structures of intermediates formed in propylene polymerisation using neutral salicyladiminato palladium(II) and nickel(II) complexes as catalysts have been investigated using density functional theory. Calculations show that all low energy intermediates contain agostic interactions either between the metal and a hydrogen from the added propylene forming four- or five-membered chelate rings, or, when a phenyl ring is present, between the metal and an aromatic C-C bond. The agostic interactions with the metal are concomitant with changes in ligand dimensions and electronic properties. In particular when a metal to hydrogen bond is formed, there is a lengthening of the C-H bond. Significant differences are found for the agostic interactions with palladium and nickel in that for Pd there is a clear preference for specific intermediates but for Ni there are several different structures with similar energies which are likely to lead to a greater variety of products on further polymerisation. Propylene polymerization using salicyladiminato metal catalalysts has been studied using density functional theory at the B3LYP/LANL2DZ level. In particular, the effects on the reaction mechanisms of changing the metal from Pd(II) to Ni(II) have been investigated. While the reaction mechanisms involving the salicyladiminato Ni(II) catalyst have been found to be similar to those established previously for the salicyladiminato Pd(II) catalyst, the nickel catalyst was found to differentiate the trans-O intermediate from the trans-.N intermediate with an energy difference of 46.63 U mol(-1) significantly more than the palladium catalyst for which the energy difference was calculated as 35.82 kJ mol(-1). The energy difference between the trans-O configuration and the trans-N configuration is decreased significantly when combining a molecule of propylene with the catalyst. For the Ni catalyst, the trans-O isomer is more stable than the trans-N isomer to a greater extent than for Pd, so that the insertion of propylene from 20 is relatively less favoured for Ni than for Pd. It is predicted that the mechanism of isomerization from 20 to 2N through a rotational transition state TS2O2N is more appropriate for the Ni catalyst system. The palladium system shows a larger preference for pi-coordination than its nickel counterpart, although the latter possesses a lower reaction barrier. It was found that the occupation of the trans-O position in the asymmetric salicyladiminato catalyst is also more favored by the alkene as it is by the alkyl so that insertion of the alkene may always start from a particular configuration so that specific products are obtained. Inelastic neutron scattering spectroscopy has been used to observe and characterise hydrogen on the carbon component of a Pt/C catalyst. INS provides the complete vibration spectrum of coronene, regarded as a molecular model of a graphite layer. The vibrational modes are assigned with the aid of ab initio density functional theory calculations and the INS spectra by the a-CLIMAX program. A spectrum for which the H modes of coronene have been computationally suppressed, a carbon-only coronene spectrum, is a better representation of the spectrum of a graphite layer than is coronene itself. Dihydrogen dosing of a Pt/C catalyst caused amplification of the surface modes of carbon, an effect described as H riding on carbon. From the enhancement of the low energy carbon modes (100-600 cm(-1)) it is concluded that spillover hydrogen becomes attached to dangling bonds at the edges of graphitic regions of the carbon support. The structure of the chiral kinked Pt{531} surface has been determined by low-energy electron diffraction intensity-versus-energy (LEED-IV) analysis and density functional theory (DFT). Large contractions and expansions of the vertical interlayer distances with respect to the bulk-terminated surface geometry were found for the first six layers (LEED: d(12) = 0.44 angstrom, d(23) = 0.69 angstrom, d(34) = 0.49 angstrom, d(45) = 0.95 angstrom, d(56) = 0.56 angstrom; DFT: d(12) = 0.51 angstrom, d(23) = 0.55 angstrom, d(34) = 0.74 angstrom, d(45) = 0.78 angstrom, d(56) = 0.63 angstrom; d(bulk) = 0.66 angstrom). Energy-dependent cancellations of LEED spots over unusually large energy ranges, up to 100 eV, can be explained by surface roughness and reproduced by applying a model involving 0.25 ML of vacancies and adatoms in the scattering calculations. The agreement between the results from LEED and DFT is not as good as in other cases, which could be due to this roughness of the real surface.

The rutile TiO2(110) surface has been doped with sub-monolayer metallic Cr, which oxidises and donates charge to specific surface Ti ions. X-Ray and ultra violet photoemission spectroscopy and first principles density functional theory with Hubbard U are used to assign the oxidation states of Cr and surface Ti and we find that Cr2+ forms on bridging oxygen ions and a 5-fold coordinated surface Ti atom is reduced to Ti3+ and the Cr ions readily react with oxygen (to Cr3+), which leads to depletion of surface Ti3+ 3d electrons.

In this article we present for the first time accurate density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent (TD) DFT data for a series of electronically unsaturated five-coordinate complexes [Mn(CO)(3)(L-2)](-), where L-2 stands for a chelating strong pi-donor ligand represented by catecholate, dithiolate, amidothiolate, reduced alpha-diimine (1,4-dialkyl-1,4-diazabutadiene (R-DAB), 2,2'-bipyridine) and reduced 2,2'-biphosphinine types. The single-crystal X-ray structure of the unusual compound [Na(BPY)][Mn(CO)(3)(BPY)]center dot Et2O and the electronic absorption spectrum of the anion [Mn(CO)(3)(BPY)](-) are new in the literature. The nature of the bidentate ligand determines the bonding in the complexes, which varies between two limiting forms: from completely pi-delocalized diamagnetic {(CO)(3)Mn-L-2}(-) for L-2 = alpha-diimine or biphosphinine, to largely valence-trapped {(CO)(3)Mn-1-L-2(2-)}(-) for L-2(2-) = catecholate, where the formal oxidation states of Mn and L-2 can be assigned. The variable degree of the pi-delocalization in the Mn(L-2) chelate ring is indicated by experimental resonance Raman spectra of [Mn(CO)(3)(L-2)](-) (L-2=3,5-di-tBu-catecholate and iPr-DAB), where accurate assignments of the diagnostically important Raman bands have been aided by vibrational analysis. The L-2 = catecholate type of complexes is known to react with Lewis bases (CO substitution, formation of six-coordinate adducts) while the strongly pi-delocalized complexes are inert. The five-coordinate complexes adopt usually a distorted square pyramidal geometry in the solid state, even though transitions to a trigonal bipyramid are also not rare. The experimental structural data and the corresponding DFT-computed values of bond lengths and angles are in a very good agreement. TD-DFT calculations of electronic absorption spectra of the studied Mn complexes and the strongly pi-delocalized reference compound [Fe(CO)(3)(Me-DAB)] have reproduced qualitatively well the experimental spectra. Analyses of the computed electronic transitions in the visible spectroscopic region show that the lowest-energy absorption band always contains a dominant (in some cases almost exclusive) contribution from a pi(HOMO) -> pi*(LUMO) transition within the MnL2 metallacycle. The character of this optical excitation depends strongly on the composition of the frontier orbitals, varying from a partial L-2 -> Mn charge transfer (LMCT) through a fully delocalized pi(MnL2) -> pi*(MnL2) situation to a mixed (CO)Mn -> L-2 charge transfer (LLCT/MLCT). The latter character is most apparent in the case of the reference complex [Fe(CO)(3)(Me-DAB)]. The higher-lying, usually strongly mixed electronic transitions in the visible absorption region originate in the three lower-lying occupied orbitals, HOMO - 1 to HOMO - 3, with significant metal-d contributions. Assignment of these optical excitations to electronic transitions of a specific type is difficult. A partial LLCT/MLCT character is encountered most frequently. The electronic absorption spectra become more complex when the chelating ligand L-2, such as 2,2'-bipyridine, features two or more closely spaced low-lying empty pi* orbitals.

A new synthetic route towards the mixed-metal cluster [OS2Ru(CO)(12)] is described together with the syntheses of its PPh3 and iPr-AcPy (iPr-AcPy = 2-acetylpyridine-N-isopropylimine) derivatives. The molecular structures of the novel clusters [Os2Ru(CO)(11)(PPh3)] and [Os2Ru(CO)(10)(iPr-AcPy)] were determined on the basis of crystalline solid solutions of the Os2Ru and corresponding Os-3 species. The structures reveal that coordination of the Lewis bases occurs exclusively at the ruthenium site of [Os2Ru(CO)(12)], which is in agreement with density functional theory (DFT) calculations on several structural isomers of these compounds. According to the time-dependent DFT results, the lowest optically accessible excited state of [Os2Ru(CO)(10)(iPr-AcPy)] has a prevailing sigma(Ru-Os-2)pi*(iPr-AcPy) character, with a partial sigma sigma*(Ru-Os-2) contribution. In weakly coordinating 2-chlorobutane, the excited state has a lifetime tau = 10.4 +/- 1.2 ps and produces biradicals considerably faster than observed for [Os-3(CO)10(iPr-AcPy) (tau = 25.3 +/- 0.7ps)]. In coordinating acetonitrile, the excited state of [Os2Ru(CO)(10)(iPr-AcPy)] decays mono-exponentially with a lifetime tau = 2.1 +/- 0.2 ps. In contrast to [Os-3(CO)(10)(iPr-AcPy)] that forms biradicals as the main primary photoproduct even in strongly coordinating solvents, zwitterion formation from the solvated lowest excited state is observed for the heterometallic cluster. This is concluded from time-resolved absorption studies in the microsecond time domain. Due to the lower tendency of the coordinatively unsaturated Ru+(CO)(2)(iPr-AcPy-/0) moiety to bind a Lewis base, the heteronuclear biradical and zwitterionic photoproducts live significantly shorter than their triosmium counterparts. The influence of the weaker Os-2-Ru(iPr-AcPy) bond on the redox reactivity is clearly reflected in very reactive radical anions formed upon electrochemical reduction of [Os2Ru(CO)(10)(iPr-AcPy)]. The dimer [-OS(CO)(4)-Os(CO)(4)-Ru(CO)(2)(iPr-AcPy)](2)(2-) is the only IR-detectable intermediate reduction product. The dinuclear complex [Os-2(CO)(8)](2-) and insoluble [Ru(CO)(2)(iPr-AcPy)](n), are the ultimate reduction products, proving fragmentation of the OS2Ru core.

The lithium salt of the anionic SPS pincer ligand composed of a central hypervalent lambda(4)-phosphinine ring bearing two ortho-positioned diphenylphosphine sulfide side arms reacts with [Mn(CO)(5)Br] to give fac-[Mn(SPS)(CO)(3)], This isomer can be converted photochemicaily to mer-[Mn(SPS)(CO)(3)], with a very high quantum yield (0.80 +/- 0.05). The thermal backreaction is slow (taking ca. 8 h at room temperature), in contrast to rapid electrodecatalyzed mer-to-fac isomerization triggered by electrochemical reduction of mer-[Mn(SPS)(CO)(3)]. Both geometric isomers of [Mn(SPS)(CO)(3)] have been characterized by X-ray crystallography. Both isomers show luminescence from a low-lying (IL)-I-3 (SPS-based) excited state. The light emission of fac-[Mn(SPS)(CO)(3)] is largely quenched by the efficient photoisomerization occurring probably from a low-lying Mn-CO dissociative excited state. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations describe the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of fac- and mer-[Mn(CO)(3)(SPS)] as ligand-centered orbitals, largely localized on the phosphinine ring of the SPS pincer ligand. In line with the ligand nature of its frontier orbitals, fac-[Mn(SPS)(CO)(3)] is electrochemically reversibly oxidized and reduced to the corresponding radical cation and anion, respectively. The spectroscopic (electron paramagnetic resonance, IR, and UV-vis) characterization of the radical species provides other evidence for the localization of the redox steps on the SIPS ligand. The smaller HOMO-LUMO energy difference in the case of mer-[Mn(CO)(3)(SPS)], reflected in the electronic absorption and emission spectra, corresponds with its lower oxidation potential compared to that of the fac isomer. The thermodynamic instability of mer-[Mn(CO)(3)(SPS)], confirmed by the DFT calculations, increases upon one-electron reduction and oxidation of the complex.

The preparation and comprehensive characterization of a series of homoleptic sandwich complexes containing diphosphacyclobutadiene ligands are reported. Compounds [K([18]crown-6)(thf)2][Fe(hapto4-P2C2tBu2)2] (K1), [K([18]crown-6)(thf)2][C(h4-P2C2tBu2)2] (K2), and [K([18]crown-6)(thf)2][Co(hapto4-P2C2Ad2)2] (K3, Ad=adamantyl) were obtained from reactions of [K([18crown-6)(thf)2][M(hapto4-C14H10)2] (M=Fe, Co) with tBuCP (1, 2), or with AdCP (3). Neutral sandwiches [M(hapto4-P2C2tBu2)2] (4: M=Fe 5: M=Co) were obtained by oxidizing 1 and 2 with [Cp2Fe]PF6. Cyclic voltammetry and spectro-electrochemistry indicate that the two [M(hapto4-P2C2tBu2)2]-/[M(hapto4-P2C2tBu2)2] moieties can be reversibly interconverted by one electron oxidation and reduction, respectively. Complexes 1–5 were characterized by multinuclear NMR, EPR (1 and 5), UV/Vis,and Moessbauer spectroscopies (1 and 4), mass spectrometry (4 and 5), and microanalysis (1–3). The molecular structures of 1–5 were determined by using X-ray crystallography. Essentially D2d-symmetric structures were found for all five complexes, which show the two 1,3-diphosphacyclobutadiene rings in a staggered orientation. Density functional theory calculations revealed the importance of covalent metal–ligand pi bonding in 1–5. Possible oxidation state assignments for the metal ions are discussed.

The reactions of propene with [Zr(cyclopentadienyl)(2)Me](+) have been investigated using density functional theory in order to study the correlation between regioselectivity and site charge in propene polymerisation. The reaction paths of the 1,2 and 2,1 additions of the methyl group to propene have been established. The geometries and energies of the reactants, transition states and products have been obtained using both PBEPBE/LANL2DZ and B3LYP/LANL2DZ methodologies. The results with both density functionals show that the activation energy for 1,2-insertion is lower than that for 2,1-insertion (Fig. 5) and this is consistent with the experiment results. Also for both density functionals, the difference of the thermal dynamic driving forces between the 2,1 product named 2-21 and the 1,2 product named 2-12 is significantly lower than the difference between the energy barriers. It is noted that in the reactants, the Mulliken partial charge on the central carbon atom C2 is positive and it can be concluded that 1,2-insertion is favoured because it can proceed via a cationic reaction.
