A new microtiter-plate dilution method was applied during the expedition ANTARKTIS-XI/2 with RV Polarstern to determine the distribution of copiotrophic and oligotrophic bacteria in the water columns at polar fronts. Twofold serial dilutions were performed with an eight-channel Electrapette in 96-wells plates by mixing 150 µl of seawater with 150 µl of copiotrophic or olitrophic Trypticase-Broth, three times per well. After incubation of about 6 month at 2 °C, turbidities were measured with an eight-channel photometer at 405 nm and combinations of positive test results for three consecutive dilutions chosen and compared with a Most Probable Number table, calculated for 8 replicates and twofold serial dilutions. Densities of 12 to 661 cells/ml for copiotrophs, and 1 to 39 cells/ml for oligotrophs were found. Colony Forming Units on copiotrophic Trypticase-Agar were between 6 and 847 cells/ml, which is in the same range as determined with the MPN method.

Gridded multibeam bathymetry from Poseidon cruise 408 and Pelagia cruises 64PE350 and 64PE351 within the Jeddah Transect Project. The raw-data were post-processed and gridded at a resolution of 30 m with QPS Fledermaus Pro. For smaller file size and better handling 11 tiles were created with GlobalMapper (5 columns, 5 lines).

The biostratigraphy of Miocene-age sediment samples recovered from Ocean Drilling Program Sites 1143 and 1146, South China Sea, is presented. The preservation of the planktonic foraminifers recovered from both sites varies widely, from poor to very good. The volume of biogenic sediment in the >63-µm size fraction also varies considerably, with many samples being dominated by mud. In comparison to shipboard biostratigraphy, based on core catcher analyses with a depth resolution of ~10 m, we analyzed samples from the two stratigraphic columns every 2-3 m (~45- to 93-k.y. resolution). The placement of planktonic foraminifer zonal boundaries was made at a resolution of ~1.5 m at Site 1146 and ~3.0 m at Site 1143. The higher resolution has resulted in significant changes in biostratigraphic zonal boundary locations compared to shipboard results. For the time interval of 5.54-10.49 Ma, the changes in zonation reveal similar age-depth models at both sites, with three segments of changing sedimentation rate through the upper Miocene, though the differences in sedimentation rates at Site 1146 are subtler than those at Site 1143. The boundary between lithologic Units II and III at Site 1146 corresponds to a sharp change in sedimentation rate (58 to 21 m/m.y.) at 15.1 Ma (the first occurrence of Orbulina suturalis). At this site, the interval from 16.4 to 15.1 Ma is characterized by very high mass accumulation rates in the noncarbonate fraction. Above this interval the carbonate fraction becomes increasingly important in the sediment flux to the South China Sea. At Site 1143, sedimentation rates increase from 8 to 99 m/m.y. at 8.6 Ma. This corresponds to a dramatic increase in both carbonate and noncarbonate mass accumulation rates at the site, but no change in lithology.

Hierarchical clustering. Taxonomic assignment of reads was performed using a preexisting database of SSU rDNA sequences from including XXX reference sequences generated by Sanger sequencing. Experimental amplicons (reads), sorted by abundance, were then concatenated with the reference extracted sequences sorted by decreasing length. All sequences, experimental and referential, were then clustered to 85% identity using the global alignment clustering option of the uclust module from the usearch v4.0 software (Edgar, 2010). Each 85% cluster was then reclustered at a higher stringency level (86%) and so on (87%, 88%,.) in a hierarchical manner up to 100% similarity. Each experimental sequence was then identified by the list of clusters to which it belonged at 85% to 100% levels. This information can be viewed as a matrix with the lines corresponding to different sequences and the columns corresponding to the cluster membership at each clustering level. Taxonomic assignment for a given read was performed by first looking if reference sequences clustered with the experimental sequence at the 100% clustering level. If this was the case, the last common taxonomic name of the reference sequence(s) within the cluster was used to assign the environmental read. If not, the same procedure was applied to clusters from 99% to 85% similarity if necessary, until a cluster was found containing both the experimental read and reference sequence(s), in which case sequences were taxonomically assigned as described above.

Famennian Stromatoporoidea from the Quasiendothyra communis Foraminiferal Zone and slightly younger strata from the Debnik anticline, southern Poland, form a succession of three consecutive assemblages. Assemblages 1 and 3 consist of representatives of the order Clathrodictyida, while assemblage 2 is dominated by the order Labechiida. The clathrodictyids are represented by the genus Gerronostroma, and labechiids are represented by the genus Stylostroma. Species assigned here to the genus Gerronostroma show a network of amalgamated pillars in the central part of the columns, a feature regarded by previous authors as typical of the genus Clavidictyon. Two new species, Stylostroma multiformis sp. nov. and Gerronostroma raclaviense sp. nov., are described. Stromatoporoids from southern Poland differ from the Famennian fauna of western Europe, showing affinity to eastern European and Siberian Stromatoporoidea.

As is less toxic than Hg, Cd, Pb, Se, Zn, and Cu. The As clarke for clays and shales is 10 ppm. Our samples of bottom sediments from Kurshskii Bay were determined to contain from 15 to 26 ppm As and up to 34 ppm As in the vicinity of the Neman River mouth. Elevated As concentrations (50-114 ppm) were detected in four columns of subsurface bottom sediments (at depths of 10-65 cm) from the Vistula Lagoon. Elevated As concentrations (50-180 ppm) were also found in a few surface samples of sand from the Gdansk Deep near oil platform D-6. These sediments are either partly contaminated with anthropogenic As or contain Fe sulfides and glauconite, which can concentrate As and contain its elevated concentrations. The As concentration in columns of bottom sediments from the Gulf of Finland were at the natural background level (throughout the columns) typical of the area (9-34 ppm). We repeatedly detected very high As concentrations (up to 227 ppm As) in politic ooze from Bornholm Deep, in the vicinity of the sunken vessel with chemical weapons. The sources of elevated As concentrations in the Baltic Sea are the following: (1) chemical weapon (CW) material buried in the floor of the Baltic Sea; (2) As-bearing pesticides, agricultural mineral fertilizers, and burned coal and other fuels; (3) kerogen-bearing Ordovician rocks exposed on the bottom; and (4) As-rich Fe sulfides brought to the area together with construction sand and gravel. This mixture was used in paper production and for the construction of hydraulic engineering facilities in the Vistula Lagoon in the early 20th century and later caused the so-called lagoon disease.

Sinking of gelatinous zooplankton biomass is an important component of the biological pump removing carbon from the upper ocean. The export efficiency, e.g., how much biomass reaches the ocean interior sequestering carbon, is poorly known because of the absence of reliable sinking speed data. We measured sinking rates of gelatinous particulate organic matter (jelly-POM) from different species of scyphozoans, ctenophores, thaliaceans, and pteropods, both in the field and in the laboratory in vertical columns filled with seawater using high-quality video. Using these data, we determined taxon-specific jelly-POM export efficiencies using equations that integrate biomass decay rate, seawater temperature, and sinking speed. Two depth scenarios in several environments were considered, with jelly-POM sinking from 200 and 600 m in temperate, tropical, and polar regions. Jelly-POM sank on average between 850 and 1500 m/d (salps: 800-1200 m/d; ctenophores: 1200-1500 m/d; scyphozoans: 1000-1100 m d; pyrosomes: 1300 m/d). High latitudes represent a fast-sinking and low-remineralization corridor, regardless of species. In tropical and temperate regions, significant decomposition takes place above 1500 m unless jelly-POM sinks below the permanent thermocline. Sinking jelly-POM sequesters carbon to the deep ocean faster than anticipated, and should be incorporated into biogeochemical and modeling studies to provide more realistic quantification of export via the biological carbon pump worldwide.

The zip folder comprises a text file and a gzipped tar archive. 1) The text file contains individual genotype data for 90 SNPs, 9 microsatellites and the mitochondrial ND4 gene that were determined in deep-sea hydrothermal vent mussels from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (genus Bathymodiolus). Mussel specimens are grouped according to the population (pop)/location from which they have been sampled (first column). The remaining columns contain the respective allele/haplotype codes for the different genetic loci (names in the header line). The data file is in CONVERT format and can be directly transformed into different input files for population genetic statistics. 2) The tar archive contains NetCDF files with larval dispersal probabilities for simulated annual larval releases between 1998 and 2007. For each simulated vent location (Menez Gwen, Lucky Strike, Rainbow, Vent 1-10) two NetCDF files are given, one for an assumed pelagic larval duration of 1 year and the other one for an assumed pelagic larval duration of 6 months (6m).

Five sites were drilled along a transect of the Walvis Ridge. The basement rocks range in age from 69 to 71 m.y., and the deeper sites are slightly younger, in agreement with the sea-floor-spreading magnetic lineations. Geophysical and petrological evidence indicates that the Walvis Ridge was formed at a mid-ocean ridge at anomalously shallow elevations. The basement complex, associated with the relatively smooth acoustic basement in the area, consists of pillowed basalt and massive flows alternating with nannofossil chalk and limestone that contain a significant volcanogenic component. Basalts are quartz tholeiites at the ridge crest and olivine tholeiites downslope. The sediment sections are dominated by carbonate oozes and chalks with volcanogenic material common in the lower parts of the sediment columns. The volcanogenic sediments probably were derived from sources on the Walvis Ridge. Paleodepth estimates based on the benthic fauna are consistent with a normal crustal-cooling rate of subsidence of the Walvis Ridge. The shoalest site in the transect sank below sea level in the late Paleocene, and benthic fauna suggest a rapid sea-level lowering in the mid-Oligocene. Average accumulation rates during the Cenozoic indicate three peaks in the rate of supply of carbonate to the sea floor, that is, early Pliocene, late middle Miocene, and late Paleocene to early Eocene. Carbonate accumulation rates for the rest of the Cenozoic averaged 1 g/cm**2/kyr. Dissolution had a marked effect on sediment accumulation in the deeper sites, particularly during the late Miocene, Oligocene, and middle to late Eocene. Changes in the rates of accumulation as a function of depth demonstrate that the upper part of the water column had a greater degree of undersaturation with respect to carbonate during times of high productivity. Even when the calcium carbonate compensation depth (CCD) was below 4400 m, a significant amount of carbonate was dissolved at the shallower sites. The flora and fauna of the Walvis Ridge are temperate in nature. Warmer-water faunas are found in the uppermost Maastrichtian and lower Eocene sediments, with cooler-water faunas present in the lower Paleocene, Oligocene, and middle Miocene. The boreal elements of the lower Pliocene are replaced by more temperate forms in the middle Pliocene. The Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary was recovered in four sites drilled, with the sediments containing well-preserved nannofossils but poorly preserved foraminifera.

El presente trabajo se refiere al estudio teórico-experimental del comportamiento de pilares y vigas de hormigón armado reforzados con fibra de carbono o CFRP. El análisis se realiza considerando que los pilares se refuerzan mediante la técnica de adhesión de tejidos de fibra de carbono, generando un efecto de confinamiento. Las vigas se refuerzan mediante la incorporación de barras del mismo material, con refuerzos a cortante. El objetivo es poder comparar el estudio analítico de este tipo de refuerzos con resultados experimentales obtenidos con anterioridad a la realización de este documento, y así poder obtener conclusiones de las posibles diferencias. Hay que señalar que los modelos experimentales no forman parte de este estudio. Los ensayos en pilares fueron realizados en sección cuadrada y circular evaluando la rotura a compresión de las piezas, habiendo sido éstas escaladas con un factor de reducción de 2,3. Los ensayos correspondientes a vigas se realizaron en sección rectangular, centrándose en la evaluación de la rotura a flexión y habiendo sido escaladas igualmente, pero con un factor de reducción de 1:2. El documento se estructura en cuatro capítulos, cuyo contenido se expone de forma concisa a continuación. En el capítulo uno o marco teórico se exponen los principios de comportamiento y tipologías de los pilares y vigas de hormigón armado, las bases teóricas de su refuerzo y confinamiento, así como las diversas técnicas de refuerzo existentes. Se detalla la técnica con FRP, comparando y analizando sus ventajas e inconvenientes. En el capítulo dos se expone el proceso de fabricación, refuerzo y resultados de los modelos experimentales realizados para ambos elementos estructurales. La obtención de los modelos teóricos forma parte del capítulo tres, comparándose con los resultados experimentales en el cuarto capítulo. Finalmente, en el último capítulo se presentan las conclusiones obtenidas al realizar esta comparativa en el refuerzo de vigas y pilares con fibra de carbono. This work refers to the theoretical and experimental study of the behavior of CFRP reinforced concrete columns and beams. The analysis was done considering that the pillars are reinforced by CFRP wrapping technique, resulting in a confinement effect. The beams are reinforced by the addition of bars of the same material, with shear reinforcements. The objective is to compare the analytical study of this type of reinforcement with experimental results obtained prior to the performance of this document, and draw conclusions for any differences. Notice that experimental models are not part of this study. The tests were performed on circular and square section pillars, evaluating compression fracture of the pieces, having been scaled down with a factor of 2.3. The tests were performed on rectangular section beams, focusing on evaluation of the bending fracture and being scaled down equally, but with a factor of 1:2. The document is divided into four chapters, whose content is set out concisely below. The chapter one or theoretical framework sets out the principles of behavior and types of columns and beams of reinforced concrete, the theoretical basis of its reinforcement and confinement, as well as various existing reinforcement techniques. CFRP technique it’s detailed, comparing and analyzing their advantages and disadvantages. Chapter two describes the process of manufacture, reinforcement and results of experimental models made for both structural elements. Chapter three shows the obtaining of the theoretical models, comparing them with the experimental results in the fourth chapter. Finally, the last chapter presents the conclusions to make this comparison in the strengthening of beams and columns with carbon fiber.

Precise and reproducible surface nanopatterning is the key for a successful ordered growth of GaN nanocolumns. In this work, we point out the main technological issues related to the patterning process, mainly surface roughness and cleaning, and mask adhesion to the substrate. We found that each of these factors, process-related, has a dramatic impact on the subsequent selective growth of the columns inside the patterned holes. We compare the performance of e-beam lithography, colloidal lithography, and focused ion beam in the fabrication of hole-patterned masks for ordered columnar growth. These results are applicable to the ordered growth of nanocolumns of different materials.
