The thesis seeks to assess the concept of power in relation to Bosnia's experience after the Cold War. It argues that power is best conceptualised as compromising two parts: 'agent power' which involves an ability of an actor to directly influence another and 'impersonal governance' which refers to the indirect effects of power.

Cold drawing is a process that sizes and smooths the surface of steel before it is cold headed to produce bolts. The effect of the changes in the mechanical properties due to cold drawing on the surface strain and ductility during the upsetting process was analysed showing that the stress and strain state can be more readily altered by changes in the process conditions (friction and height-to-diameter ratio) to cause greater increase in the failure strains than can be achieved by pre-drawing.

This research determined how the natriuretic peptide system, which controls water and salt balance, responds to water limitation in a desert rodent. It was found that a uniform down-regulation of the system is not part of the physiological response to minimise water loss during periods of low water availability.

The thesis describes the development of a model of the cold forging process that accurately predicts the initiation of ductile fracture. The effect of the deformation history of the material during multiple forming operations is considered. Both two- and three-dimensional numerical models of the forging process were combined with a ductile fracture criterion to predict the material ductility and damage distribution in the workpiece.

By arguing that international relations scholarship fails to explain adequately the end of the Cold War because it gives insufficient consideration to the role performed by Mikhail Gorbachev, the thesis makes a case for the systematic examination of the part played by individual political actors in international affairs.

Investigates the significance and interactive effects of lubricant type, workpiece surface texture and deformation rate under bulk metal, deformation conditions. A novel test rig was developed in conjunction with statistical test techniques. The result of this work identified a cold forming lubrication system with potential economic and environmental advantages over traditional lubrication systems.

An ultrafine grained Nb microalloyed steel was produced by cold rolling of martensite followed by annealing heat treatments at different times to study its effect on the microstructure and mechanical behaviour of the ultrafine grained steel. High strength was achieved by this thermomechanical processing due to the formation of cell and subgrain dislocation substructure; however annealing reduced both strength and elongation.

Today, having a good flatness control in steel industry is essential to ensure an overall product quality, productivity and successful processing. Flatness error, given as difference between measured strip flatness and target curve, can be minimized by modifying roll gap with various control functions. In most practical systems, knowing the definition of the model in order to have an acceptable control is essential. In this paper, a fuzzy Petri net method for modeling and control of flatness in cold rolling mill is developed. The method combines the concepts of Petri net and fuzzy control theories. It focuses on the fuzzy decision making problems of the fuzzy rule tree structures. The method is able to detect and recover possible errors that can occur in the fuzzy rule of the knowledge-based system. The method is implemented and simulated. The results show that its error is less than that of a PI conventional controller.

A brief appraisal of marine fossils from high latitudes and episodically cold climate especially in east Australia and New Zealand during Late Palaeozoic and Early Mesozoic times shows patterns of evolution and survival that differ from those adduced for the palaeotropics and Northern Hemisphere. Examples taken from amongst phyla Scyphozoa, Bryozoa, Brachiopoda and Classes Bivalvia and Class Cephalopoda suggest these attributes:
1. Evolution and demise of species and genera proceeded at a rate close to that known for palaeotropical and Northern Hemisphere macro-invertebrates, but involved fewer families and orders.
2. Possibly, intraspecific variation was greater amongst southern palaeohemisphere Permian species than in those of the Permian palaeotropics.
3. There was no proven diminution of life at the end of the Guadalupian (Middle Permian) at southern high latitudes, where however the fossil record is meagre for this interval. Younger Wuchiapingian and Changhsingian faunas were moderately diverse.
4. There is no evidence for a high latitude Southern Hemisphere anoxic event in the Early Triassic despite claims of a world-wide anoxic interval. Nor has any substantial volcanic eruption or bolide impact left any marked traces in the sedimentary record.
5. As a consequence, some major groups such as Bryozoa and Conulariida (Staurozoa) survived the end- Permian extinction shock in the Southern Hemisphere.
6. Other major groups appear to have survived better in the south than in the north, notably, mollusc Bivalvia and Cephalopoda. It therefore appears likely that Triassic seas were restocked substantially from the Southern Hemisphere and that the Permian extinction shock was asymmetric with respect to latitudes in its distribution and affect.

The evolution of adiabatic shear localization in commercial titanium subjected to heavy cold rolling was investigated. The evolution of the morphology, microhardness, local shear strain, and local temperature increments were systematically studied and estimated. A shear band with about 25m in width was formed and fine nanograins with a range of dimensions varying from 20 to 160nm and had a mean size of about 70nm were observed inside the centre of shear band after 83% cold-rolling. Microhardness test shows that hardness within the shear band is markedly higher than that of the surrounding matrix. The calculated shear strain and maximum temperature increase within the shear band are much higher than that of the overall deformed sample. The initiation of shear localization may depend on geometric perturbation instead of thermal ones.
