The recent advancement in the growth technology of InGaN/GaN has decently positioned InGaN based white LEDs to leap into the area of general or daily lighting. Monolithic white LEDs with multiple QWs were previously demonstrated by Damilano et al. [1] in 2001. However, there are several challenges yet to be overcome for InGaN based monolithic white LEDs to establish themselves as an alternative to other day-to-day lighting sources [2,3]. Alongside the key characteristics of luminous efficacy and EQE, colour rendering index (CRI) and correlated colour temperature (CCT) are important characteristics for these structures [2,4]. Investigated monolithic white structures were similar to that described in [5] and contained blue and green InGaN multiple QWs without short-period superlattice between them and emitting at 440 nm and 530 nm, respectively. The electroluminescence (EL) measurements were done in the CW and pulse current modes. An integration sphere (Labsphere “CDS 600” spectrometer) and a pulse generator (Agilent 8114A) were used to perform the measurements. The CCT and Green/Blue radiant flux ratio were investigated at extended operation currents from 100mA to 2A using current pulses from 100ns to 100μs with a duty cycle varying from 1% to 95%. The strong dependence of the CCT on the duty cycle value, with the CCT value decreasing by more than three times at high duty cycle values (shown at the 300 mA pulse operation current) was demonstrated (Fig. 1). The pulse width variation seems to have a negligible effect on the CCT (Fig. 1). To account for the joule heating, a duty cycle more than 1% was considered as an overheated mode. For the 1% duty cycle it was demonstrated that the CCT was tuneable in three times by modulating input current and pulse width (Fig. 2). It has also been demonstrated that there is a possibility of keeping luminous flux independent of pulse width variation for a constant value of current pulse (Fig. 3).

Accurate colour vision testing requires using the correct illumination. With the plethora of 'daylight' lamps available, is there a cost-effective alternative to the discontinued MacBeth Easel lamp? Smoking is a known risk factor for macula degeneration. As the macula is responsible for colour discrimination, any toxin that affects it has the potential to influence colour discrimination. Aims: To find a costeffective light source for colour vision testing. To investigate the effect of smoking on colour discrimination. To explore how deuteranomalous trichromats compare with normal trichromats. Methods: Using the Ishihara colour vision test subjects were classified into the groups: 'Normal/Control', 'Smoker/Test', and 'Case Study' (subjects who failed the screening test and did not smoke). They completed the Farnsworth Munsell 100 Hue test under each of the three light sources: Phillips EcoHalo Twist (tungsten halogen - THL), Kosnic KCF07ALU/GU10-865 (compact fluorescent- CFL), and Deal Guardian Ltd. GU103X2WA4B-60 (light-emitting diode - LED) Results: 42 subjects took part in the study: 18 in the Normal/Control group, 18 in the Smoker/Test group, and 6 in the Case Study group. For the Normal/Control group the total error scores (TESs) were significantly lower with the CFL than with the THL (p = 0.017) as it was for the Case Study group (p = 0.009). No significant differences were found between the Normal/Control group and the Smoker/Test group for each light source. Decision tree analysis found pack years to be a significant variable for TES. Discussion: All three light sources were comparable with previous studies. The CFL provided better colour discrimination than the LED despite them both being 6500 K. Deuteranomalous trichromats showed a greatest deviation than normal trichromats using the LED. Conclusions: The Kosnic KCF07ALU/GU10-865 is a cost-effective alternative for colour vision testing. Smoking appears to have an effect on colour vision, but requires further investigation.

Differential evolution is an optimisation technique that has been successfully employed in various applications. In this paper, we apply differential evolution to the problem of extracting the optimal colours of a colour map for quantised images. The choice of entries in the colour map is crucial for the resulting image quality as it forms a look-up table that is used for all pixels in the image. We show that differential evolution can be effectively employed as a method for deriving the entries in the map. In order to optimise the image quality, our differential evolution approach is combined with a local search method that is guaranteed to find the local optimal colour map. This hybrid approach is shown to outperform various commonly used colour quantisation algorithms on a set of standard images. Copyright © 2010 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Iridescent colour, caused by physical effects (thin-film interference, diffraction and Tyndall scattering), is relatively common in animals but exceedingly rare among plants1. Some benthic marine algae produce blue to violet iridescence2,3, and the upper leaf surfaces of a few vascular plants from the shady environments of humid tropical forests are iridescent blue4–6. Blue fruit colour has been assumed to be caused by anthocyanins7. A survey of such fruits (26 species in 18 genera) in Costa Rica, India, Florida and Malaysia, showed this to be the case, except for the iridescent colour in fruits of Elaeocarpus angustifolius Blume (Elaeocarpaceae). There I show that the colour is caused by a remarkable structure in the epidermis, and provide evidence for its selective advantage.
