Proteins stored in insect hemolymph may serve (is a source of amino acids and energy for metabolism, and development. The expression of the main storage proteins was assessed in bacterial-challenged honey bees using real-time (RT)-PCH and Western blot.. After ensuring that. the immune system had, been activated by measuring the ensuing expression (, the innate immune response genes, defensin-1 (def-1) and prophenoloxidase (pro PO), we verified the expression of four genes encoding storage proteins. The levels of vitellogenin (vg) mRNA and of the respective protein. were significantly lowered in bees injected with bacteria or water only (injury). An equivalent response was observed in orally-infected bees. The levels of apolipophorin II/I (apoLP-II/I) and hexamerin (hex 70a) mRNAs did not significantly change, but levels of Hex 70a protein subunit showed a substantial decay after bacterial challenge or injury. Infection also caused a strong reduction in the levels of apoLP-III transcripts. Our findings are consistent with a down-regulation, of the express and accumulation of storage proteins as a consequence of activation of the immune system, suggesting that this phenomenon. represents a strategy to redirect resources to combat injury or infection. Fear relevance, the potential of a stimulus to become quickly associated with fear, is a characteristic assumed to have an evolutionary basis and to result in preferential processing. Previous research has shown that fear relevant stimuli share a number of characteristics, negative valence and preferential identification in a visual search task, for instance. The present research examined whether these two characteristics can be acquired by non-fear relevant stimuli (geometric shapes) as a result of Pavlovian fear conditioning. Two experiments employed an aversive learning paradigm with geometric shape CSs and a shock US, with stimulus ratings, affective priming and visual search performance assessed before and after acquisition and after extinction. Differential electrodermal responses, larger during CS1 than CS, were present during acquisition but not during extinction. Affective priming results suggest that the CS1 acquired negative valence during acquisition, which was lost during extinction. However, negative valence as indexed by more negative ratings for CS1 than for CS shapes seemed to survive extinction. Preferential attentional processing as indexed by faster detection of CS1 among CS shapes than vice versa on the visual search task also remained. The current research confirmed that characteristics of fear relevant stimuli can be acquired in an aversive learning episode and that they may be extinguished. This supports the proposal that fear relevance may be malleable through learning.

The reproductive biology and pollination mechanisms of Govenia utriculata (Sw.) Lindl. were studied in a mesophytic semideciduous forest at Serra do Japi, south-eastern Brazil. The floral visitors and pollination mechanisms were recorded, and experimental pollinations were carried out to determine the breeding system of this species. Populations of G. utriculata growing at Serra do Japi are exclusively visited and pollinated by two species of hoverflies in the genus Salpingogaster (Diptera: Syrphidae) that are attracted by deceit to the flowers of this orchid species. The lip apex and the column base present small brownish and yellow to orange spots that mimic pollen clusters. Govenia utriculata is self-compatible, but pollinator dependent. Natural fruit set was low (10%), but similar to that of other non-obligatorily autogamous sympatric orchid species that occur at Serra do Japi and of other fly-pollinated orchid species pollinated through deceptive mechanisms.

This work reports on the synthesis and characterization of a new complex of Eu(3+) with the 3-hydroxypicolinamide ligand (Hhpa). Here we present an approach for obtaining bis[2-carbamoyl(kappa O)pyridin-3-olato(kappa O`)] lanthanide complexes, which were characterized through elemental analysis, thermal analysis, infrared and photoluminescence spectroscopies (emission, excitation, luminescence lifetimes, quantum efficiencies, Judd-Ofelt parameters and quantum yields). Although hpa can act as a bidentate ligand in different conformations, the results attest for the occurrence of a unique coordination site of low symmetry for the Eu(3+) ions, in which two anionic hpa ligands coordinate the cations through an O/O chelating system. The phosphorescence of the synthesized gadolinium complex provides the energy of the triplet state, which is determined to be at 20,830 cm(-1) over the ground state. This makes the Hhpa ligand very adequate for sensitizing the Eu(3+) luminescence, which leads to a very efficient antenna effect and opens a wide range of applications for the complex in light emitting organic-inorganic devices.

Simple equations are proposed for determining elastic modulus and hardness properties of thin films on substrates from nanoindentation experiments. An empirical formulation relates the modulus E and hardness H of the film/substrate bilayer to corresponding material properties of the constituent materials via a power-law relation. Geometrical dependence of E and H is wholly contained in the power-law exponents, expressed here as sigmoidal functions of indenter penetration relative to film thickness. The formulation may be inverted to enable deconvolution of film properties from data on the film/substrate bilayers. Berkovich nanoindentation data for dense oxide and nitride films on silicon substrates are used to validate the equations and to demonstrate the film property deconvolution. Additional data for less dense nitride films are used to illustrate the extent to which film properties may depend on the method of fabrication.

New hybrid composites based on mesostructured V(2)O(5) containing intercalated poly(ethylene oxide), poly-o-methoxyaniline and poly(ethylene oxide)/poly-o-methoxyaniline were prepared. The results suggest that the polymers were intercalated into the layers of the mesostructured V(2)O(5). Electrochemical studies showed that the presence of both polymers in the mesostructured V(2)O(5) (ternary hybrid) leads to an increase in total charge and stability after several cycles compared with binary hybrid composites. This fact makes this material a potential component as cathode for lithium ion intercalation and further, a promising candidate for applications in batteries.

The present study prospectively recorded the circumstances, incidence, mechanisms, injury detection and presentation of concussion in Rugby League. Forty-three consecutive concussions were recorded over three competitive seasons in 175 professional Rugby League players. Data showed (i) the incidence of concussion ranged from 5.9 to 9.8 injuries/1000 player hours across grades - except when age-group players were mismatched (18.4); (ii) 'head-high tackles' accounted for a significant number of concussions; (iii) concussion rarely involved a loss of consciousness with the most common indicators of concussion being amnesia, headache and unsteadiness, with the mechanism of injury often missed; and (iv) concussion often occurs concurrently with other injuries. Concussion (including repeated episodes) is a common injury in Rugby League. Systematic mental status questioning is warranted whenever concussion is suspected. Coaches, trainers and players need more education in the recognition and management of concussion. Stricter penalties for illegal 'head-high' tackling are strongly recommended.

The epsilon4 allele of apolipoprotem E (APOE), and the plasma levels of APOE, amyloid beta-protein precursor, arnyloid beta1-40 (Abeta40) and homocysteine, (Hcy) have all been correlated with the presence of dementia. Mutations in the methylnetetrahydrofolate reductase enzyme (MTHFR) have been associated with elevated levels of Hcy. This study explored the association of these factors with cognition and depression in community dwelling older men. Two hundred and ninety-nine men, mean age 78.9 years (SD 2.8), were studied in this cross-sectional survey. Mean plasma Hcy was 13.5 (SD 5.3) mumol/L. The MTHFR genotype had no obvious impact on Hey levels. Ln Hcy and Ln Abeta40 were both inversely correlated with calculated glomerular filtration rate (cGFR), r = -0.41 (p < 0.001) and r = -0.28 (p < 0.001), respectively. There was a positive correlation between Ln Hey and Ln Abeta40, r = 0.19 (p < 0.001), which remained significant after adjusting for cGFR, with a doubling of Hcy associated with a 24% increase of Abeta40. The e4 allele was associated with increased depressive symptoms as measured by the Geriatric Depression Scale-15, Odds ratio (OR) = 2.59 (95% CI 1.06-6.34) and poorer performance on the Clock Drawing Test, OR = 2.32 (95% CI: 1.25-4.29). There was a positive association between Abeta40 and Hcy, even after adjustment for cGFR in this sample of well, community dwelling older men. This association may help elucidate the link between elevated levels of Hey and Alzheimer's disease.

The photochemical behavior of nitrosyl complexes Ru(salen)(NO)(OH(2))(+) and Ru(salen)(NO) Cl (salen = N, N`-ethylenebis-(salicylideneiminato) dianion) in aqueous solution is described. Irradiation with light in the 350-450 nm range resulted in nitric oxide (NO) release from both. For Ru(salen)(NO) Cl secondary photoreactions also resulted in chloride aquation. Thus, in both cases the final photoproduct is the diaquo cation Ru(III) (salen) (OH(2))(2)(+), for which pK(a)`s of 5.9 and 9.1 were determined for the coordinated waters. The pK(a) of the Ru(salen)(NO)(OH(2))+ cation was also determined as 4.5 +/- 0.1, and the relative acidities of these ruthenium aquo units are discussed in the context of the bonding interactions between Ru(III) and NO. In this work, we describe the characterization of the complex [Fe(tpy-NH2)(2)](PF6)(2) (tpy-NH2 = bis[4`-(3-aminophenyl)-2, 2`:6`,2 ``-terpyridine]. The complex was oxidatively electropolymerized on glassy.-carbon electrodes in CH3CN/0.1 M tetraethylammonium perchlorate (TEAP) to generate polymer films that exhibit reversible oxidative electrochemical behavior in a wide potential range (0.0-1.6 V), as well as high conductivity and stability/durability. In situ spectrocyclic voltammetry of this modified electrode was carried out on a photodiode array spectrophotometer attached to a potentiostat, which provided UV-Vis absorption spectra of the redox species during the potential sweep. We determined charge transport parameters as a function of time and thickness of the modified electrode, and the results showed that poly-[[Fe(tpy-NH2)(2)](2+)](n) can be made to exhibit three regimes of charge transport behavior by manipulation of the film thickness and the experimental time-scale. Morphological characterization of the film was provided by atomic force microscopy. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Hydroalumination of thioacetylenes using DIBAL-H and lithium di-(isobutyl)-n-(butyl)-aluminate hydride (Zweifel`s reagent), followed by addition of water, furnished exclusively the (Z)- and (E)-vinyl sulfides, respectively. The regio- and stereochemistry of the intermediates generated, (Z)- and (E)-phenylthio vinyl alanates, were determined by capture with iodine, which afforded the corresponding (E)- and (Z)-1-iodo-1-phenylthio-2-organoyl ethenes. Reactions of the (E)-iodo(thio)ketene acetals with n-BuLi followed by addition of hexanal afforded the (Z)-phenylthio allylic alcohol, while the (Z)-iodo(thio)ketene acetals under similar reactions conditions gave the (E)-phenylthio allylic alcohol exclusively.

Itraconazole (ITZ) is a drug used to treat various fungal infections and may cause side effects. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate the in vitro activity of DMSA-PLGA nanoparticles loaded with ITZ against Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, as well as their cytotoxicity. Nanoparticles were prepared using the emulsification-evaporation technique and characterized by their encapsulation efficiency, morphology (TEM), size (Nanosight) and charge (zeta potential). Antifungal efficacy in P brasiliensis was determined by minimal inhibition concentration (MIC), and cytotoxicity using MU assay. ITZ was effectively incorporated in the PLGA-DMSA nanoparticles with a loading efficiency of 72.8 +/- 3.50%. The shape was round with a solid polymeric structure, and a size distribution of 174 +/- 86 nm (Average +/- SD). The particles were negatively charged. ITZ-NANO presented antifungal inhibition (MIC = 6.25 ug/mL) against P brasiliensis and showed lower in vitro cytotoxicity than free drug (ITZ).
