Calcareous nannofossil assemblages were studied from Sites 699 and 703, drilled during ODP Leg 114 to the west and east, respectively, of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge in the subantarctic South Atlantic Ocean. Recovery at the two sites consists of an almost continuous sequence of upper Eocene-lower Oligocene sediments. This study describes the calcareous nannofossil assemblages at the transition between the Eocene and Oligocene and correlates these assemblages with those described in lower latitude sections. Quantitative analyses were performed on several important taxa in order to improve the biostratigraphic resolution and permit some paleoenvironmental interpretations. Several discrepancies were noted between the two sites and between the Eocene and Oligocene assemblages. The Eocene assemblages show a great number of species and warmer water conditions; the early Oligocene assemblages are less diversified and are indicative of cooler conditions. The Eocene/Oligocene boundary was not defined by planktonic foraminifers because of the strong dissolution, poor recovery, and drilling disturbances. On the other hand, the calcareous nannofossil assemblage allowed recognition of the interval where the Eocene/Oligocene boundary can possibly be placed.

In the literature, an inconsistency exists between estimates of biotically-effected carbon export inferred from large-scale geochemical studies (Jenkins 1982; 47 gC m-2 a-1) and local measurements of turbulent nutrient supply (Lewis et al. 1986; 4 gC m-2 a-1) in the eastern subtropical North Atlantic. Nutrient supply to the upper ocean by turbulent mixing is reexamined using local standard oceanographic measurements and high-resolution vertical profiles of nutrients averaged over a large region directly comparable to that investigated by Jenkins (1982). Turbulent fluxes induced by internal waves and salt fingering, respectively, are separated according to Gregg (1989) and Zhang et al. (1998). Nutrient transport into the nutrient-consuming surface layer by salt fingering is more than fivefold higher than transport due to internal-wave induced turbulence. Still, this cannot resolve the above- mentioned apparent inconsistency, even if additional physical transport mechanisms such as eddy pumping, advection and horizontal diffusion are accounted for. Estimated nitrate fluxes due to vertical turbulent diffusion are 0.05-0.15 mol m-2 a-1, corresponding to 4-11 gC m-2 a-1. Observed NO3/PO4 turbulent flux ratios of up to 23 are interpreted as the imprint of N2 fixation.

Oceanic sediments deposited at high rate close to continents are dominated by terrigenous material. Aside from dilution by biogenic components, their chemical compositions reflect those of nearby continental masses. This study focuses on oceanic sediments coming from the juvenile Canadian Cordillera and highlights systematic differences between detritus deriving from juvenile crust and detritus from old and mature crust. We report major and trace element concentrations for 68 sediments from the northernmost part of the Cascade forearc, drilled at ODP Sites 888 and 1027. The calculated weighted averages for each site can then be used in the future to quantify the contribution of subducted sediments to Cascades volcanism. The two sites have similar compositions but Site 888, located closer to the continent, has higher sandy turbidite contents and displays higher bulk SiO2/Al2O3 with lower bulk Nb/Zr, attributed to the presence of zircons in the coarse sands. Comparison with published data for other oceanic sedimentary piles demonstrates the existence of systematic differences between modern sediments deriving from juvenile terranes (juvenile sediments) and modern sediments derived from mature continental areas (cratonic sediments). The most striking systematic difference is for Th/Nb, Th/U, Nb/U and Th/Rb ratios: juvenile sediments have much lower ratios than cratonic sediments. The small enrichment of Th over Nb in cratonic sediments may be explained by intracrustal magmatic and metamorphic differentiation processes. In contrast, their elevated Th/U and Nb/U ratios (average values of 6.87 and 7.95, respectively) in comparison to juvenile sediments (Th/U ~ 3.09, Nb/U ~ 5.15) suggest extensive U and Rb losses on old cratons. Uranium and Rb losses are attributed to long-term leaching by rain and river water during exposure of the continental crust at the surface. Over geological times, the weathering effects create a slow but systematic increase of Th/U with exposure time.

Long sequences of Upper Cretaceous through Quaternary sediments rich in calcareous and siliceous microfossils were recovered at Ocean Drilling Program Sites 689 and 690 on Maud Rise off East Antarctica. These sites have become the southernmost anchor in the Atlantic Basin for bio-, magneto-, chemostratigraphic, and paleobiogeographic studies. ODP Sites 692 and 693 on the Weddell Sea margin of East Antarctica and Site 696 on the South Orkney microcontinent of West Antarctica yielded calcareous nannofossils within some stratigraphic intervals. Sites 691, 692, 694, 695, and 697 did not recover Cenozoic calcareous nannofossils. Calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy suggests a major hiatus across the Paleogene/Neogene boundary at Sites 689 and 690, and two additional hiatuses in the middle Eocene-lower Oligocene section at Site 690. Correlation with magnetostratigraphy reveals: the last occurrence (LO) of Reticulofenestra umbilica at Maud Rise is over 1 m.y. younger than that at the middle-latitude sites; the LO of Isthmolithus recurvus is synchronous in the middle-latitude and high-latitude areas (about 34.8 Ma); Reticulofenestra oamaruensis ranges from 38.0 to 36.0 Ma at Maud Rise; Reticulofenestra reticulata has a shorter range at Maud Rise (42.1 to 38.9 Ma) than at the middle-latitude DSDP Site 516; the range of Chiasmolithus oamaruensis is diachronous over different latitudes; and the LO of Chiasmolithus solitus is a good datum at 41.3 Ma from 30°S to 65°S in the South Atlantic Ocean. Comparison of calcareous nannofossil abundances in a latitudinal transect shows: Reticulofenestra bisecta is a temperate-water species and its LO, which crosses below that of Chiasmolithus altus at Maud Rise, is not applicable for the Paleogene/Neogene boundary in high southern latitude areas; Clausicoccus fenestratus is rare or absent at Maud Rise and can not be used as a marker; Coccolithus formosus is a warm-water species which disappeared earlier toward higher latitudes. Calcareous nannofossil assemblages indicate that by at least the middle Eocene, surface water temperatures became considerably lower in the high southern latitudes than in the middle-latitude areas and that there have been more extreme cold events in the high latitudes during the Neogene. Bicolumnus ovatus n. gen., n. sp. is proposed in this paper.

Lower Miocene through upper Pleistocene benthic foraminifer assemblage records from Ocean Drilling Program Site 751 on the Southern Kerguelen Plateau (57°44'S, water depth 1634 m) were combined with benthic and planktonic foraminifer oxygen and carbon isotope records and high-resolution CaCO3 data from the same site. Implications for the Neogene productivity and paleoceanography of the southern Indian Ocean are discussed. We used distinctive features of the Miocene d18O and d13C curves for stratigraphic correlation. Coinciding with a lower middle Miocene hiatus from 14.2 to 13.4 Ma, there was a rapid increase in benthic d18O values by 1.2 per mil. This distinct increase occurs in middle Miocene benthic foraminifer oxygen isotope curves from all oceans. No major change, however, in benthic foraminifer faunal composition occurred in this period of growth of the Antarctic ice cap and cooling of deep ocean waters (14.9-14.2 Ma). A drastic change in benthic foraminifer faunas coincided with a hiatus from 8.4 to 5.9 Ma. Shortly after this hiatus, in the latest Miocene, the CaCO3 content of the sediments dropped from 75% to 0%. From that time ( 5.8 Ma) through the early Pliocene, Site 751 has been situated beneath a high biogenic siliceous productivity zone. Carbonate contents of upper Pliocene and Pleistocene sediments vary between 20% and 70%. The benthic foraminifer faunas in the uppermost Pliocene and lower Pleistocene reflect strong bottom current conditions, in contrast to those in the upper Pleistocene, which indicate calm sedimentation and high food supply. High d13C values of planktonic foraminifers compared with low values of benthic foraminifers suggest high primary productivity in the late Pleistocene. The changes in productivity were probably a result of latitudinal migration and meandering of the Polar Frontal Zone.

ODP Hole 740A is located on the inner part of the East Antarctic continental shelf in Prydz Bay, at the seaward end of a major onshore rift structure known as the Lambert Graben. Drilling at this site led to the recovery of some 65 m of continental sediments (Prydz Bay red beds) that form part of a much thicker (2-3 km) pre-continental breakup sequence, the development of which may be related to the initiation and rifting of the Lambert Graben. Palynological and paleomagnetic studies have not been able to determine the age of the sediments; they may be equivalent to the onshore late Permian Amery Group or younger. The succession consists predominantly of sandstone, siltstone, and claystone arranged in erosively based, pedogenically influenced fining-upward sequences up to 5 m thick. These were deposited by shallow, braided streams draining an extensively vegetated alluvial plain, with sufficient topographic relief to trap fine-grained sediment and inhibit rapid channel shifting. Pedogenic processes were initiated on the alluvial plain, but climatic conditions were generally unsuitable for extensive pedogenic carbonate formation and the development of mature soil profiles. The sediments were probably derived from a rapidly uplifted fault block terrain composed of upper Proterozoic and Archaean gneisses lying to the southeast of the depositional site. Uplift may have taken place along the tectonically active seaward extension of the eastern faulted margin of the Lambert Graben, which passes immediately southeast of Hole 740A. Differences in mineralogical composition between the Amery Group and the Prydz Bay red beds probably reflect differences in rock composition in the source area. The age of the Prydz Bay red beds has still to be resolved.

The Paleocene/Eocene boundary was recovered for the first time in diatom-bearing sediments at Broken Ridge, Site 752. Diatom assemblages are documented throughout the 180-m-thick sequence of upper Paleocene to lower Eocene sediments. Age control available from magnetostratigraphy, calcareous nannofossils, and planktonic foraminifers allows calibration of diatom datum levels to absolute time. A partly new/partly revised diatom zonation is proposed for the Paleocene/early Eocene based on the results of Site 752 and consideration of other studies. The diatom zones are defined as follows (from the youngest to the oldest): Pyxilla gracilis Zone (first occurrence of Craspedodiscus undulatus to first occurrence Pyxilla gracilis); Hemiaulus incurvus Zone (first occurrence Pyxilla gracilis to first occurrence Hemiaulus incurvus); Hemiaulus peripterus Zone (first occurrence Hemiaulus incurvus to first occurrence Hemiaulus peripterus var. peripterus). Three new taxa are described: Anaulus fennerae n. sp., Stictodiscus bipolaris n. sp., and Hemiaulus peripterus var. longispinus n. var.

Benthic foraminiferal delta13C data from site 502 in the Caribbean Sea (sill depth ?1800 m) indicate that throughout the past 2.6 m.y., glacial delta13C values in the middepth Atlantic were higher during glaciations than interglaciations. This is interpreted as indicating a greater proportion of Upper North Atlantic Deep Water (UNADW) relative to southern source waters during glaciations. The contribution of UNADW during interglaciations to the middepth Atlantic remained approximately constant, and the contribution during glaciations may have been as much as 10 % higher in the late Pleistocene than in the late Pliocene. This small increase is in striking contrast to the much larger decrease in glacial Lower North Atlantic Deep Water (LNADW) contribution relative to southern sources, from about 80% to about 20%, that occurred over the past 2.6 m.y. Glacial intensification over the past 2.6 m.y. was probably coupled with a decrease in northward heat transport by the upper limb of the North Atlantic circulation cell, as was previously suggested on the basis of a LNADW record alone. Late Pleistocene (1 Ma-present) delta13C values in the Caribbean Sea were approximately 0.2? higher than they were from 2.6 to 2.0 Ma. The delta13C rise is not due to an increase in the mean ocean delta13C value, nor can it be entirely attributed to an increase in the proportion of high-delta13C source waters. An increase in the delta13C value of the surface source waters must have contributed to the delta13C rise.

A new calibration database of census counts of organic-walled dinoflagellate cyst (dinocyst) assemblages has been developed from the analyses of surface sediment samples collected at middle to high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere after standardisation of taxonomy and laboratory procedures. The database comprises 940 reference data points from the North Atlantic, Arctic and North Pacific oceans and their adjacent seas, including the Mediterranean Sea, as well as epicontinental environments such as the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence, the Bering Sea and the Hudson Bay. The relative abundance of taxa was analysed to describe the distribution of assemblages. The best analogue technique was used for the reconstruction of Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) sea-surface temperature and salinity during summer and winter, in addition to sea-ice cover extent, at sites from the North Atlantic (n=63), Mediterranean Sea (n=1) and eastern North Pacific (n=1). Three of the North Atlantic cores, from the continental margin of eastern Canada, revealed a barren LGM interval, probably because of quasi-permanent sea ice. Six other cores from the Greenland and Norwegian seas were excluded from the compilation because of too sparse assemblages and poor analogue situation. At the remaining sites (n= 54), relatively close modern analogues were found for most LGM samples, which allowed reconstructions. The new LGM results are consistent with previous reconstructions based on dinocyst data, which show much cooler conditions than at present along the continental margins of Canada and Europe, but sharp gradients of increasing temperature offshore. The results also suggest low salinity and larger than present contrasts in seasonal temperatures with colder winters and more extensive sea-ice cover, whereas relatively warm conditions may have prevailed offshore in summer. From these data, we hypothesise low thermal inertia in a shallow and low-density surface water layer.

The oxygen and carbon isotopic compositions of the planktonic foraminifer, Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (sinistral), were determined at 20-cm intervals through the 'composite' top ~ 22 m of sediments at ODP Site 645 (Holes 645B, 645C, 645F, and 645G) and at 10-cm intervals through a 9-m piston core (85-027-016) collected during the Hudson site survey. Quantitative analyses of palynomorphs, notably dinocysts, and of planktonic foraminifers were performed. Organic and nitrogen contents and isotopic composition of nitrogen and carbon in organic matter also were determined. These data provide a high-resolution record of changes that occurred in surface-water masses during the last glacial cycle in Baffin Bay. The basin experienced low planktonic productivity during most of the late Pleistocene, either from dilution in surface water by meltwater discharges from the surrounding ice-sheet or from the presence of a relatively dense sea-ice cover. Peaks of meltwater discharge are indicated by d18O values as low as about 1.5 per mil, correlative d13C- d18O shifts, low concentration of planktonic foraminifers, high concentrations of glacially reworked pre-Quaternary palynomorphs, and low-salinity dinocyst assemblages. As a whole, d18O values ranging between 4.5 and 2.5 per mil allow the establishment of an 18O stratigraphy spanning isotopic stages 5 to 1. Because of the poor core recovery, the general paucity of microflora and microfauna, and the possible occurrence of slumping or debris flow at Site 645, further interpretation remains problematic.

An Eocene-Oligocene oxygen and carbon isotope history based on planktonic and benthic foraminifers from Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 71 cores has been constructed for the Maurice Ewing Bank of the eastern Falkland Plateau, Southwest Atlantic Ocean. Specifically, the cores cover portions of the middle Eocene, upper Eocene, and lower Oligocene. Surface water isotopic temperatures postulated for the middle Eocene at Site 512 fluctuated within about four degrees but generally averaged about 9°C. Bottom isotopic temperatures at Site 512 (water depth, 1846 m) were generally a degree lower than surface water temperatures. Surface water isotopic temperatures at Site 511 initially averaged about 11°C during the late Eocene, but dropped to an average of 7°C in the early Oligocene. Bottom isotopic temperatures at Site 511 (water depth, 2589 m) generally record temperatures between 12.5°C and 8°C, similar to the range in the surface water isotopic temperatures. During the early Oligocene, bottom isotopic temperatures dropped sharply and averaged about 2°C (very close to present-day values). Surface water temperature values also decreased to an average of about 7°C, therefore leading to a significant divergence between surface and bottom water isotopic temperatures during the early Oligocene. Comparisons among Southern Ocean DSDP Sites 511, 512, and 277, and between these and other DSDP sites from central and northern latitudes (Sites 44, 167, 171, 292, 357, 398, 119, and 401) show that much of the Eocene was characterized by relatively warm temperatures until sometime in either the middle Eocene, late Eocene, or early Oligocene. At each site, conspicuous 18O enrichments occur in both the benthic and planktonic foraminifers over a relatively short period of time. Although a general trend toward a climatic deterioration is evident, the density of data points among the various studies is still too sparse to determine either synchrony or time-transgression between the major isotopic events. A close correlation could be made between the Site 511 oxygen isotope temperature curve and paleoclimatic trends derived independently from radiolarian studies. The sharp temperature drop and the divergence between bottom and surface water temperatures during the early Oligocene apparently reflect a major expansion of the antarctic water mass. The migration of the boundary between the subantarctic and antarctic water masses over the site at this time would account in part for the sharp temperature changes. Sharp changes of this nature would not necessarily be noted in other geographic areas, particularly those to the north which have different oceanographic regimes.

High-resolution records (2 7 kyr) of Upper Pliocene Discoaster abundances obtained from six ODP/DSDP sites are assessed independently using oxygen isotope stratigraphy. Four Atlantic Ocean sites (DSDP Sites 552 and 607, and ODP Sites 659 and 662) comprise a transect from 56°N to 1°S and provide a record of latitudinal variations in Diseoaster biogeography. Low-latitude sites in the Atlantic (ODP Site 662), Pacific (ODP Site 677), and Indian (ODP Site 709) oceans provide additional information about variability in Discoaster abundance patterns within the equatorial region. A common chronology, based on the astronomical time scale developed for ODP Site 677, has been established for all the sites. By integrating oxygen isotope data and Discoaster abundance records at each site we are able to independently evaluate the temporal and spatial distribution of D. brouweri and D. triradiatus in the 500 kyr prior to the extinction of the discoasters near the base of the Olduvai subchron. Major decreases in abundance are evident during some of the more intense late Pliocene glacial events. In particular, glacial isotope stages 82, 96, 98 and 100 are associated with distinct abundance minima. At these times, large-scale changes in surface hydrographic conditions appear to have suppressed Discoaster numbers on a global scale. The increase in abundance of D. triradiatus, which precedes the extinction of the discoasters by around 200 kyr, may also be related to the intensification of environmental pressures that accompanied the build-up of Northern Hemisphere ice sheets during the late Pliocene. In spite of contrasting geographic and oceanographic settings, the various D. brouweri and D. triradiatus records are remarkably similar. This demonstrates that the acme and extinction events are excellent biostratigraphic datums. The simultaneous extinction of D. brouweri and D. triradiatus at 1.95 Ma were synchronous events at both a regional scale within the Atlantic, and on a global scale between the three major oceans. However, the start of the D. triradiatus acme appears to have been diachronous, occurring some 40 kyr earlier in the Atlantic than in the Indo-Pacific, and hence the stratigraphic usefulness of this datum is regional rather than global.

The stress history, permeability, and compressibility of sediments from Demerara Rise recovered during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 207 were determined using one-dimensional incremental load consolidation and low-gradient flow pump permeability tests. Relationships among void ratio, effective stress, and hydraulic conductivity are presented for sampled lithologic units and used to reconstruct effective stress, permeability, and in situ void ratio profiles for a transect of three sites across Demerara Rise. Results confirm that a significant erosional event occurred on the northeastern flank of the rise during the late Miocene, resulting in the removal of ~220 m of upper Oligocene-Miocene deposits. Although Neogene and Paleogene sediments tend to be overconsolidated, Cretaceous sediments are normally consolidated to underconsolidated, suggesting the presence of overpressure. A pronounced drop in permeability occurs at the transition from the Cretaceous black shales into the overlying Maastrichtian-upper Paleocene chalks and clays. The development of a hydraulic seal at this boundary may be responsible for overpressure in the Cretaceous deposits, leading to the lower overconsolidation ratios of these sediments. Coupled with large regional variations in sediment thickness (overburden stresses), the higher permeability overpressured Cretaceous sediments represent a regional lateral fluid conduit on Demerara Rise, possibly venting methane-rich fluids where it outcrops on the margin's northeastern flank.

Carbonate-free portions of Upper Cretaceous to Holocene sediment samples from the Kerguelen Plateau in the southern Indian Ocean were investigated by X-ray diffraction. Downhole variations in the content of opal-A, opal-CT, quartz, feldspar, barite, and clinoptilolite were studied at Site 737 on the northern Kerguelen Plateau and at Sites 744 and 738 on the southern Kerguelen Plateau. The variation of these components reflects temporal changes in the depositional history of the Kerguelen Plateau as well as major differences in the sedimentary evolution between the northern plateau and the southern plateau. Carbonate is the dominant component in the pelagic sediments on the Kerguelen Plateau. In addition, biogenic opal sedimentation plays an important role throughout most of the sequence. A major increase in opal accumulation is documented at all sites in late Miocene time, which is in accordance with the well-known increase in silica productivity probably caused by a major cooling step. Because of its position near the Polar Frontal Zone, sediments from Site 737 show a more extensive opal deposition than at Sites 744 and 738. An earlier productivity pulse is documented at Site 744 on the southern plateau within the early Oligocene, following the initial phase of intense East Antarctic glaciation. This cooling event resulted in higher amounts of ice-rafted terrigenous quartz and, to a lesser extent, feldspar. With the exception of the Site 744 sediments, opal deposition in Paleogene and older sediments can be reconstructed only from the diagenetic transformation products of opal-CT and probably clinoptilolite. In contrast to the southern sequence, on the northern Kerguelen Plateau higher amounts of clinoptilolite and no opal-CT were found. These major differences in the diagenetic environments may be due to extensive volcanism in the northern area. The volcanic influence at Site 737 is well recorded by the higher feldspar content and higher amounts of volcanic glass shards.

Distribution of planktonic foraminiferal tests was studied in four drill cores of Upper Quaternary sediments from the zone of influence of the Canary upwelling and in nine sediment cores from the zone of the Benguela upwelling. Paleotemperatures were reconstructed from these data. It was established that under conditions during stadials, interstadials, and interglacials of Quaternary time, the upwelling existed continuously, intensifying and expanding during colder epochs and weakening and contracting in the warmer intervals. During the last stadial (about 18000 yrs ago), relative cooling of sea waters as compared to central regions of the ocean in the zone of the Canary upwelling was not lower than 9°C (4.5°C higher than at present time), and in the zone of the Benguela upwelling it was not lower than 15°C (8.5°C higher than at present time).
