Precoding for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna systems is considered with perfect channel knowledge available at both the transmitter and the receiver. For two transmit antennas and QAM constellations, a real-valued precoder which is approximately optimal (with respect to the minimum Euclidean distance between points in the received signal space) among real-valued precoders based on the singular value decomposition (SVD) of the channel is proposed. The proposed precoder is obtainable easily for arbitrary QAM constellations, unlike the known complex-valued optimal precoder by Collin et al. for two transmit antennas which is in existence for 4-QAM alone and is extremely hard to obtain for larger QAM constellations. The proposed precoding scheme is extended to higher number of transmit antennas on the lines of the E - d(min) precoder for 4-QAM by Vrigneau et al. which is an extension of the complex-valued optimal precoder for 4-QAM. The proposed precoder's ML-decoding complexity as a function of the constellation size M is only O(root M)while that of the E - d(min) precoder is O(M root M)(M = 4). Compared to the recently proposed X- and Y-precoders, the error performance of the proposed precoder is significantly better while being only marginally worse than that of the E - d(min) precoder for 4-QAM. It is argued that the proposed precoder provides full-diversity for QAM constellations and this is supported by simulation plots of the word error probability for 2 x 2, 4 x 4 and 8 x 8 systems.

Low complexity decoders called Partial Interference Cancellation (PIC) and PIC with Successive Interference Cancellation (PIC-SIC), which include the Zero Forcing (ZF) and ZF-SIC receivers as special cases, were given by Guo and Xia along with sufficient conditions for a Space-Time Block Code (STBC) to achieve full diversity with PIC/PIC-SIC decoding for point-to-point MIMO channels. In Part-I of this two part series of papers, we give new conditions for an STBC to achieve full diversity with PIC and PIC-SIC decoders, which are equivalent to Guo and Xia's conditions, but are much easier to check. We then show that PIC and PIC-SIC decoders are capable of achieving the full cooperative diversity available in wireless relay networks and give sufficient conditions for a Distributed Space-Time Block Code (DSTBC) to achieve full diversity with PIC and PIC-SIC decoders. In Part-II, we construct new low complexity full-diversity PIC/PIC-SIC decodable STBCs and DSTBCs that achieve higher rates than the known full-diversity low complexity ML decodable STBCs and DSTBCs.

In this second part of a two part series of papers, we construct a new class of Space-Time Block Codes (STBCs) for point-to-point MIMO channel and Distributed STBCs (DSTBCs) for the amplify-and-forward relay channel that give full-diversity with Partial Interference Cancellation (PIC) and PIC with Successive Interference Cancellation (PIC-SIC) decoders. The proposed class of STBCs include most of the known full-diversity low complexity PIC/PIC-SIC decodable STBCs as special cases. We also show that a number of known full-diversity PIC/PIC-SIC decodable STBCs that were constructed for the point-topoint MIMO channel can be used as full-diversity PIC/PIC-SIC decodable DSTBCs in relay networks. For the same decoding complexity, the proposed STBCs and DSTBCs achieve higher rates than the known low decoding complexity codes. Simulation results show that the new codes have a better bit error rate performance than the low ML decoding complexity codes available in the literature.

The experimental observations of casting titanium in sodium silicate bonded zircon sand mould are presented in this paper. Metal-mould reactions, in general, involved dissolution of oxides in liquid titanium resulting in contamination of the casting. Minimal metal-mould reactions occurred when titanium was cast in zircon sand mould containing about 7.5 wt% of ZrO2. It has been further shown that the metal-mould reaction is considerably reduced if moulds were fired at high temperatures (> 1273K). This ensured elimination of moisture from the mould and also resulted in some beneficial changes in the mould chemistry. The reduction in metal-mould reaction is reflected in the decrease in oxygen and hydrogen contamination and decrease in hardness. Thus microhardness profile and oxygen analysis seems to provide a good index for evaluation of severity of metal-mould reaction. The method has been demonstrated to be satisfactory for casting titanium components.

The Generalized Distributive Law (GDL) is a message passing algorithm which can efficiently solve a certain class of computational problems, and includes as special cases the Viterbi's algorithm, the BCJR algorithm, the Fast-Fourier Transform, Turbo and LDPC decoding algorithms. In this paper GDL based maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding of Space-Time Block Codes (STBCs) is introduced and a sufficient condition for an STBC to admit low GDL decoding complexity is given. Fast-decoding and multigroup decoding are the two algorithms used in the literature to ML decode STBCs with low complexity. An algorithm which exploits the advantages of both these two is called Conditional ML (CML) decoding. It is shown in this paper that the GDL decoding complexity of any STBC is upper bounded by its CML decoding complexity, and that there exist codes for which the GDL complexity is strictly less than the CML complexity. Explicit examples of two such families of STBCs is given in this paper. Thus the CML is in general suboptimal in reducing the ML decoding complexity of a code, and one should design codes with low GDL complexity rather than low CML complexity.

In this paper, we give a new framework for constructing low ML decoding complexity space-time block codes (STBCs) using codes over the Klein group K. Almost all known low ML decoding complexity STBCs can be obtained via this approach. New full- diversity STBCs with low ML decoding complexity and cubic shaping property are constructed, via codes over K, for number of transmit antennas N = 2(m), m >= 1, and rates R > 1 complex symbols per channel use. When R = N, the new STBCs are information- lossless as well. The new class of STBCs have the least knownML decoding complexity among all the codes available in the literature for a large set of (N, R) pairs.

Together with 106 farmers who started growing Jatropha (Jatropha curcas L.) in 20042006, this research sought to increase the knowledge around the real-life experience of Jatropha farming in the southern India states of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Launched as an alternative for diesel in India, Jatropha has been promoted as a non-edible plant that could grow on poor soils, yield oil-rich seeds for production of bio-diesel, and not compete directly with food production. Through interviews with the farmers, information was gathered regarding their socio-economic situation, the implementation and performance of their Jatropha plantations, and their reasons for continuing or discontinuing Jatropha cultivation. Results reveal that 82% of the farmers had substituted former cropland for their Jatropha cultivation. By 2010, 85% (n = 90) of the farmers who cultivated Jatropha in 2004 had stopped. Cultivating the crop did not give the economic returns the farmers anticipated, mainly due to a lack of information about the crop and its maintenance during cultivation and due to water scarcity. A majority of the farmers irrigated and applied fertilizer, and even pesticides. Many problems experienced by the farmers were due to limited knowledge about cultivating Jatropha caused by poor planning and implementation of the national Jatropha program. Extension services, subsidies, and other support were not provided as promised. The farmers who continued cultivation had means of income other than Jatropha and held hopes of a future Jatropha market. The lack of market structures, such as purchase agreements and buyers, as well as a low retail price for the seeds, were frequently stated as barriers to Jatropha cultivation. For Jatropha biodiesel to perform well, efforts are needed to improve yield levels and stability through genetic improvements and drought tolerance, as well as agriculture extension services to support adoption of the crop. Government programs will -probably be more effective if implementing biodiesel production is conjoined with stimulating the demand for Jatropha biodiesel. To avoid food-biofuel competition, additional measures may be needed such as land-use restrictions for Jatropha producers and taxes on biofuels or biofuel feedstocks to improve the competitiveness of the food sector compared to the bioenergy sector. This article aims to obtain damage-tolerant designs with minimum weight for a laminated composite structure using genetic algorithm. Damage tolerance due to impacts in a laminated composite structure is enhanced by dispersing the plies such that too many adjacent plies do not have the same angle. Weight of the structure is minimized and the Tsai-Wu failure criterion is considered for the safe design. Design variables considered are the number of plies and ply orientation. The influence of dispersed ply angles on the weight of the structure for a given loading conditions is studied by varying the angles in the range of 0 degrees-45 degrees, 0 degrees-60 degrees and 0 degrees-90 degrees at intervals of 5 degrees and by using specific ply angles tailored to loading conditions. A comparison study is carried out between the conventional stacking sequence and the stacking sequence with dispersed ply angles for damage-tolerant weight minimization and some useful designs are obtained. Unconventional stacking sequence is more damage tolerant than the conventional stacking sequence is demonstrated by performing a finite element analysis under both tensile as well as compressive loading conditions. Moreover, a new mathematical function called the dispersion function is proposed to measure the dispersion of ply angles in a laminate. The approach for dispersing ply angles to achieve damage tolerance is especially suited for composite material design space which has multiple local minima.

We propose a novel technique for reducing the power consumed by the on-chip cache in SNUCA chip multicore platform. This is achieved by what we call a "remap table", which maps accesses to the cache banks that are as close as possible to the cores, on which the processes are scheduled. With this technique, instead of using all the available cache, we use a portion of the cache and allocate lesser cache to the application. We formulate the problem as an energy-delay (ED) minimization problem and solve it offline using a scalable genetic algorithm approach. Our experiments show up to 40% of savings in the memory sub-system power consumption and 47% savings in energy-delay product (ED).

Purpose: Waardenburg syndrome (WS) is characterized by sensorineural hearing loss and pigmentation defects of the eye, skin, and hair. It is caused by mutations in one of the following genes: PAX3 (paired box 3), MITF (microphthalmia-associated transcription factor), EDNRB (endothelin receptor type B), EDN3 (endothelin 3), SNAI2 (snail homolog 2, Drosophila) and SOX10 (SRY-box containing gene 10). Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked recessive disorder caused by mutations in the DMD gene. The purpose of this study was to identify the genetic causes of WS and DMD in an Indian family with two patients: one affected with WS and DMD, and another one affected with only WS. Methods: Blood samples were collected from individuals for genomic DNA isolation. To determine the linkage of this family to the eight known WS loci, microsatellite markers were selected from the candidate regions and used to genotype the family. Exon-specific intronic primers for EDN3 were used to amplify and sequence DNA samples from affected individuals to detect mutations. A mutation in DMD was identified by multiplex PCR and multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification method using exon-specific probes. Results: Pedigree analysis suggested segregation of WS as an autosomal recessive trait in the family. Haplotype analysis suggested linkage of the family to the WS4B (EDN3) locus. DNA sequencing identified a novel missense mutation p.T98M in EDN3. A deletion mutation was identified in DMD. Conclusions: This study reports a novel missense mutation in EDN3 and a deletion mutation in DMD in the same Indian family. The present study will be helpful in genetic diagnosis of this family and increases the mutation spectrum of EDN3.
