In near-shore Pacific bottom sediments to the east of Japan unusually high content of free H2S ocurs. H2S resulting from bacterial reduction of sulfates from interstitial waters has a number of derivatives; pyrite dominates among them. Contents of other derivatives of H2S: sulfide sulfur and organic sulfur do not exceed 0,01%, content of organic sulfur does not exceed 0.1%. Due to reduction content of sulfates can reduce to 0,03% S. Capacity of the process of sulfate reduction, estimated by sum of all reduced forms of S - derivatives of H2S, is a function of organic matter content in sediments. Ability of bottom sediments to accumulate free H2S depends on content of reactive forms of Fe. Spatial distribution of reduced forms of S in the studied sediments is considered.

The book is devoted to study of diagenetic changes of organic matter and mineral part of sediments and interstitial waters of the Pacific Ocean due to physical-chemical and microbiological processes. Microbiological studies deal with different groups of bacteria. Regularities of quantitative distribution and the role of microorganisms in geochemical processes are under consideration. Geochemical studies highlight redox processes of the early stages of sediment diagenesis, alterations of interstitial waters, regularities of variations in chemical composition of iron-manganese nodules.

The discovery of deep-sea hydrothermal vents in 1977 revolutionized our understanding of the energy sources that fuel primary productivity on Earth. Hydrothermal vent ecosystems are dominated by animals that live in symbiosis with chemosynthetic bacteria. So far, only two energy sources have been shown to power chemosynthetic symbioses: reduced sulphur compounds and methane. Using metagenome sequencing, single-gene fluorescence in situ hybridization, immunohistochemistry, shipboard incubations and in situ mass spectrometry, we show here that the symbionts of the hydrothermal vent mussel Bathymodiolus from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge use hydrogen to power primary production. In addition, we show that the symbionts of Bathymodiolus mussels from Pacific vents have hupL, the key gene for hydrogen oxidation. Furthermore, the symbionts of other vent animals such as the tubeworm Riftia pachyptila and the shrimp Rimicaris exoculata also have hupL. We propose that the ability to use hydrogen as an energy source is widespread in hydrothermal vent symbioses, particularly at sites where hydrogen is abundant.

Ice-rich permafrost landscapes are sensitive to climate and environmental change due to the melt-out of ground ice during thermokarst development. Thermokarst processes in the northern Yukon Territory are currently not well-documented. Lake sediments from Herschel Island (69°36'N; 139°04'W) in the western Canadian Arctic provide a record of thermokarst lake development since the early Holocene. A 727 cm long lake sediment core was analyzed for radiographic images, magnetic susceptibility, granulometry, and biogeochemical parameters (organic carbon, nitrogen, and stable carbon isotopes). Based on eight calibrated AMS radiocarbon dates, the sediment record covers the last ~ 11,500 years and was divided into four lithostratigraphic units (A to D) reflecting different thermokarst stages. Thermokarst initiation at the study area began ~ 11.5 cal ka BP. From ~ 11.5 to 10.0 cal ka BP, lake sediments of unit A started to accumulate in an initial lake basin created by melt-out of massive ground ice and thaw subsidence. Between 10.0 and 7.0 cal ka BP (unit B) the lake basin expanded in size and depth, attributed to talik formation during the Holocene thermal maximum. Higher-than-modern summer air temperatures led to increased lake productivity and widespread terrain disturbances in the lake's catchment. Thermokarst lake development between 7.0 and 1.8 cal ka BP (unit C) was characterized by a dynamic equilibrium, where lake basin and talik steadily expanded into ambient ice-rich terrain through shoreline erosion. Once lakes become deeper than the maximum winter lake ice thickness, thermokarst lake sediments show a great preservation potential. However, site-specific geomorphic factors such as episodic bank-shore erosion or sudden drainage through thermo-erosional valleys or coastal erosion breaching lake basins can disrupt continuous deposition. A hiatus in the record from 1.8 to 0.9 cal ka BP in Lake Herschel likely resulted from lake drainage or allochthonous slumping due to collapsing shore lines before continuous sedimentation of unit D recommenced during the last 900 years.

Drilling during Leg 167 at the California margin was scheduled to recover continuous sedimentary sections. Multiple advanced piston core (APC) holes drilled at different depth offsets provided core overlap in successive APCs. Correlation of high-resolution laboratory physical properties data from adjacent APC holes was used to compile composite depth sections for each site. The composite depth sections were used to confirm continuous recovery and enable high-resolution sampling. The meters composite depth (mcd) scale differs from the shipboard meters below seafloor (mbsf) scale because of (1) core expansion following recovery (MacKillop et al., 1995, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.138.118.1995), (2) coring gaps, and (3) stretching/compression of sediment during coring (Lyle, Koizumi, Richter, et al., 1997, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.167.1997). Moran (1997, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.154.132.1997) calculated that sediment expansion accounted for 90%-95% of the Leg 154 depth offset between shipboard mbsf and the mcd scales. Terzaghi's one-dimensional theory of consolidation (Terzaghi, 1943) describes the response of sediments to stress loading and release. Mechanical loading in marine environments is provided by the buoyant weight of the overlying sediments. The load increases with depth below seabed, resulting in sediment volume reduction as water is "squeezed" out of the voids in the sediment. Stress release during core recovery results in expansion of the sediment and volume increase as water returns to the sediment. The sediment expansion or rebound defines the elastic properties of the sediment. In this study we examine the elastic deformation properties of sediments recovered from Sites 1020 and 1021. These results are used to (1) correct the laboratory index properties measurements to in situ values and (2) determine the contribution of sediment rebound to the depth offset between the mbsf and mcd scales.

Physical properties measurements provide a relatively inexpensive and fast way to obtain high-resolution estimates of the variations in sedimentological properties. To better resolve the validity and cause of the geophysical signals measured by the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) shipboard multisensor track (MST) instruments, 223 x 10 cm**3 core samples were collected at 4 cm intervals in Core 167-1016B-17H at the California Margin Conception Transect for the measurements of index properties, carbonate content, and opal content. This core was chosen because hole-to-hole stratigraphic correlation of MST data suggested that Core 17H corresponds to a depth interval that displays the greatest range of amplitude of many physical properties.

Surveys of the areas surrounding the sites drilled on the Leg 92 19°S transect showed that sedimentation at all except the oldest site is dominated by calcium carbonate deposition. The sediments in the area of the oldest site, west of the Austral Fracture Zone, are being deposited beneath the calcium carbonate compensation depth and are dominated by terrigenous and metal-rich hydrogenous and hydrothermal sediments. The noncarbonate sediments in all of the areas east of the Austral Fracture Zone are dominated by hydrothermal sediment similar in composition to that presently being deposited at the East Pacific Rise. Although no biogenic microfossils were present in smear slides of the sediment, geochemical partitioning suggests that a remnant signal of siliceous biogenic deposition may be preserved, especially in gravity core (GC) 8, which was collected from a high heat flow zone near Site 600. The siliceous sediment may also result from the deposition of amorphous hydrothermal silica from the higher concentrations of pore water SiO2 characteristic of the upwelling waters. Sedimentation on the broad plateaus that characterize each area is quite uniform and suggests that sites on these plateaus will be broadly representative of pelagic sedimentation in the area.

On Leg 93, physical properties measurements were made of vertical and horizontal sonic velocity, acoustic impedance, vane shear strength, and penetrometer strength, using procedures discussed in Boyce (1973, 1976, 1984). Gravimetric procedures were used to determine wet-bulk density, grain density, porosity, and water content, using either the chunk method or the cylinder method. Calcium carbonate content of Leg 93 sediments was determined by the carbonate.

Well-developed Campanian to Maestrichtian pelagic cyclic sediments were recovered from Hole 762C on the Exmouth Plateau, off northwest Australia, during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 122. The cycles consist of nannofossil chalk (light beds) and clayey nannofossil chalk (dark beds). Both light and dark beds are strongly to moderately bioturbated, alternate on a decimeter scale, and exhibit gradual boundaries. Bioturbation introduces materials from a bed of one color into an underlying bed of another color, indicating that diagenesis is not responsible for the cyclicity. Differences in composition between the light and dark beds, revealed by calcium carbonate measurement and X-ray diffraction analysis, together with trace fossil evidence, indicate that the cycles in the sediments are a depositional feature. Diagenetic processes may have intensified the appearance of the cycles. Spectral analysis was applied to the upper Campanian to lower Maestrichtian cyclic sediments to examine the regularity of the cycles. Power spectra were calculated from time series using Walsh spectral analysis. The most predominant wavelengths of the color cycles are 34-41 cm and 71-84 cm. With an average sedimentation rate of 1.82 cm/k.y. in this interval, we found the time durations of the cycles to be around 41 k.y. and 21 k.y., respectively, comparable to the obliquity and precession periods of the Earth's rotation, which strongly suggests an orbital origin for the cycles. On the basis of sedimentological evidence and plate tectonic reconstruction, we propose the following mechanism for the formation of the cyclic sediments from Hole 762C. During the Late Cretaceous, when there was no large-scale continental glaciation, the cyclic variations in insolation, in response to cyclic orbital changes, controlled the alternation of two prevailing climates in the area. During the wetter, equable, and warmer climatic phases under high insolation, more clay minerals and other terrestrial materials were produced on land and supplied by higher runoff to a low bioproductivity ocean, and the dark clayey beds were deposited. During the drier and colder climatic phases under low insolation, fewer clay minerals were produced and put into the ocean, where bioproductivity was increased and the light beds were deposited.

Fluxes of lithogenicmaterial and fluxes of three palaeo productivity proxies (organic carbon, biogenic opal and alkenones) over the past 100,000 years were determined using the 230Th-normalization method in three sediment cores from the Subantarctic South Atlantic Ocean. Features in the lithogenic flux record of each core correspond to similar features in the record of dust deposition in the EPICA Dome C ice core. Biogenic fluxes correlate with lithogenic fluxes in each sediment core. Our preferred interpretation is that South American dust, most probably from Patagonia, constitutes a major source of lithogenic material in Subantarctic South Atlantic sediments, and that past biological productivity in this region responded to variability in the supply of dust, probably due to biologically available iron carried by the dust. Greater nutrient supply as well as greater nutrient utilization (stimulated by dust) contributed to Subantarctic productivity during cold periods, in contrast to the region south of the Antarctic Polar Front (APF), where reduced nutrient supply during cold periods was the principal factor limiting productivity. The anti-phased patterns of productivity on opposite sides of the APF point to shifts in the physical supply of nutrients and to dust as cofactors regulating productivity in the Southern Ocean.

The present volume contains the planktological data collected during the expedition of the "Meteor" to the Indian Ocean in 1964/65. It was the main objective of the expedition to study the up- and downwelling conditioned along the western and eastern coasts of the Arabian Sea by the northeastern monsoon. It is from these areas that the greater part of the data here presented was obtained. A few values from the Red Sea have been added. As the title "Planktological-Chemical Data" implies, it was chiefly with the help of chemical methods that the planktological investigations, with the exception of the particle size analysis and phytoplankton counting conducted optically, were carried out. These investigations were above all devoted to a quantitative survey of particulate matter and plankton, the latter being sampled by water-bottle and net. The zooplankton hauls were taken with the Indian Ocean Standard Net according to the international guidelines laid down for the expedition. As a rule, double catches were made at every station, one sample being intended for laboratory analysis at the Indian Ocean Biological Centre in Ernakulam, South India, and the other for the Institut für Meereskunde in Kiel. In addition to determining the standing stock, the production rate of phytoplankton was measured by the 14C method. These experiments were mainly conducted during the latter half of the expedition. The planktological studies primarily covered the euphotic zone, extending into the underlying water layers up to a depth of 600 m. The investigations were above all directed towards ascertaining the quantity of organic substance, formed by primary production, in its relation to environmental conditions and determining whether or not organic substance is actively transported from the surface into the deeper layers by the periodically migration organisms of the deep scattering layers. Depending on the station time available, a few samples could now and then be taken from deeper layers. The present volume of planktological-chemical data addresses itself to all those concerned processing the extensive material collected during the International Indian Ocean Expedition. As a readily accessible work of reference, it hopes to serve as an aid in the evaluation and interpretation of the expedition results. The complementary ecological data such as temperature, salinity, and oxygen content as well as the figures obtained on abundance and distribution in depth of the nutrients essential for primary production may be found in the volume of physical-chemical data published in Series A of the "Meteor"-Forschungsergebnisse No. 2, 1966 (Dietrich et al., 1966).
