FT-Raman and FT-IR spectra of ASnFe(PO4)3 [A=Na2, Ca, Cd] were recorded and analyzed. The bands were assigned in terms of the vibrational group frequencies of SnO6 octahedral and PO4 tetrahedral. The spectral analysis shows that the symmetry of corner shared octahedral (SnO6) and the tetrahedral (PO4) are lowered from their free ion symmetry state. The presence of Fe3+ ions disrupts the S–N–O–S–N chain in the structure. This causes distortion of SnO6 and PO4 in the structure of all the compounds. Also it is seen that there are two distinct PO4 tetrahedra of different P–O bond lengths. One of these tetrahedra is linearly distorted in all the title compounds. The PO4 frequencies and bond lengths are calculated theoretically and are in agreement with the experimental values. The presence of PO4 polyanion in the structure can reduce the redox energy and hence reduce the metal oxygen covalency strength in the structure

The water vapour continuum absorption is an important component of molecular absorption of radiation in atmosphere. However, uncertainty in knowledge of the value of the continuum absorption at present can achieve 100% in different spectral regions leading to an error in flux calculation up to 3-5 W/m2 global mean. This work uses line-by-line calculations to reveal the best spectral intervals for experimental verification of the CKD water vapour continuum models in the currently least studied near-infrared spectral region. Possible sources of errors in continuum retrieval taken into account in the simulation include the sensitivity of laboratory spectrometers and uncertainties in the spectral line parameters in HITRAN-2004 and Schwenke-Partridge database. It is shown that a number of micro-windows in near-IR can be used at present for laboratory detection of the water vapour continuum with estimated accuracy from 30 to 5%.

A 2D porous material, Cu-3(tmen)(3)(tma)(2)(H2O)(2)(.)6.5H(2)O [tmen = N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethane-1,2-diamine; tmaH(3) = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid/trimesic acid], has been synthesized and characterized by X-ray single crystal analysis, variable temperature magnetic measurements, IR spectra and XRPD pattern. The complex consists of 2D layers built by three crystallographically independent Cu(tmen) moieties bridged by tma anions. Of the three copper ions, Cu(1) and Cu(2) present distorted square pyramidal coordination geometry, while the third exhibits a severely distorted octahedral environment. The Cu(1)(tmen) and Cu(2)(tmen) building blocks bridged by tma anions give rise to chains with a zig-zag motif, which are cross-connected by Cu(3)(tmen)-tma polymers sharing metal ions Cu(2) through pendant tma carboxylates. The resulting 2D architecture extends in the crystallographic ab-plane. The adjacent sheets are embedded through the Cu(3)(tmen) tma chains, leaving H2O-filled channels. There are 6.5 lattice water molecules per formula unit, some of which are disordered. Upon heating, the lattice water molecules get eliminated without destroying the crystal morphology and the compound rehydrated reversibly on exposure to humid atmosphere. Magnetic data of the complex have been fitted considering isolated irregular Cu-3 triangles (three different J parameters) by applying the CLUMAG program. The best fit indicates three close comparable J parameters and very weak antiferromagnetic interactions are operative between the metal centers. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A quantitative low energy electron diffraction (LEED) analysis has been performed for the p(2 x 2)-S and c(2 x 2)-S surface structures formed by exposing the (1 x 1) phase of Ir{100} to H2S at 750 K. S is found to adsorb on the fourfold hollow sites in both structures leading to Pendry R-factor values of 0.17 for the p(2 x 2)-S and 0.16 for the c(2 x 2)-S structures. The distances between S and the nearest and next-nearest Ir atoms were found to be similar in both structures: 2.36 +/- 0.01 angstrom and 3.33 +/- 0.01 angstrom, respectively. The buckling in the second substrate layer is consistent with other structural studies for S adsorption on fcc{100} transition metal surfaces: 0.09 angstrom for p(2 x 2)-S and 0.02 angstrom for c(2 x 2)-S structures. The (1 x 5) reconstruction, which is the most stable phase for clean Ir{100}, is completely lifted and a c(2 x 2)-S overlayer is formed after exposure to H,S at 300 K followed by annealing to 520 K. CO temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) experiments indicate that the major factor in the poisoning of Ir by S is site blocking. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The co-adsorption of CO and O on the unreconstructed (1 x 1) phase of Ir {100} was examined by low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD). When CO is adsorbed at 188 K onto the Ir{100} surface precovered with 0.5 ML O, a mixed c(4 x 2)-(2O + CO) overlayer is formed. All CO is oxidised upon heating and desorbs as CO2 in three distinct stages at 230 K, 330 K and 430 K in a 2:1:2 ratio. The excess oxygen left on the surface after all CO has reacted forms an overlayer with a LEED pattern with p(2 x 10) periodicity. This overlayer consists of stripes with a local p(2 x 1)-O arrangement of oxygen atoms separated by stripes of uncovered It. When CO is adsorbed at 300 K onto the surface precovered with 0.5 ML O an apparent (2 x 2) LEED pattern is observed. LEED IV analysis reveals that this pattern is a superposition of diffraction patterns from islands of c(2 x 2)-CO and p(2 x 1)-O structures on the surface. Heating this co-adsorbed overlayer leads to the desorption of CO, in two stages at 330 K and 430 K; the excess CO (0.1 ML) desorbs at 590 K. LEED IV structural analysis of the mixed c(4 x 2) O and CO overlayer shows that both the CO molecules and the O atoms occupy bridge sites. The O atoms show significant lateral displacements of 0.14 angstrom away from the CO molecules; the C-O bond is slightly expanded with respect to the gas phase (1.19 angstrom); the modifications of the Ir substrate with respect to the bulk-terminated surface are very small. The vinylogous aldol reaction between appropriate aldehydes and furan-based silyloxy diene synthon generated from 3-benzyl-5H-furan-2-one (3) afforded two truncated lactone analogues [compounds (4) and (5)] of nostoclides (2). The compounds were fully characterized by IR, NMR (H-1 and C-13), 2D NMR spectroscopy experiments (HMBC, HSQC and NOESY), MS spectrometry and X-ray crystallography. Compounds (4) and (5) crystallized in the space group P2(1)2(1)2(1) and P2(1)/c, respectively. Although expected correlations between hydrogen atoms in spatial close proximity were not observed for compound (5) using NMR, the stereochemistry of the exocyclic double bond of both (4) and (5) was unambiguously determined to be Z and E, respectively, using X-ray crystallography. The packing of both compounds within the crystal are stabilized by non-classical inter-molecular hydrogen bonds. DFT calculations (B3LYP/6-31+G* level) confirmed that the crystal structures possessed the lowest energies in the gas phase when compared to their geometric isomers. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. The adsorption of NO on Ir{100} has been studied as a function of NO coverage and temperature using temperature programmed reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (TP-RAIRS), low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD). After saturating the clean (1 x 5)-reconstructed surface with NO at 95 K. two N-2, desorption peaks are observed upon heating. The first N-2 peak at 346 K results from the decomposition of bridge-bonded NO, and the second at 475 K from the decomposition of atop-bonded NO molecules. NO decomposition is proposed to be the rate limiting step for both N-2 desorption states. For high NO coverages on the (1 x 5) surface, the narrow width of the first N-2 desorption peak is indicative of an autocatalytic process for which the parallel formation of N2O appears to be the crucial step. When NO is adsorbed on the metastable unreconstructed (1 x 1) phase of clean Ir{100} N-2 desorption starts at lower temperatures, indicating that this surface modification is more reactive. When a high coverage of oxygen, near 0.5 ML, is pre-adsorbed on the surface, the decomposition of NO is inhibited and mainly desorption of intact NO is observed.
