Simultaneous determination of delta(33) SV-CDT and delta S-34(V-CDT) using masses 48, 49 and 50 on a continuous flow isotope ratio mass spectrometer

A new, fast, continuous flow technique is described for the simultaneous determination of 633 S and delta(34)S using SO masses 48, 49 and 50. Analysis time is similar to5min/sample with measurement precision and accuracy better than +/-0.3parts per thousand. This technique, which has been set up using IAEA Ag2S standards S-1, S-2 and S-3, allows for the fast determination of mass-dependent or mass-independent fractionation (MIF) effects in sulfide, organic sulfur samples and possibly sulfate. Small sample sizes can be analysed directly, without chemical pre-treatment. Robustness of the technique for natural versus artificial standards was demonstrated by analysis of a Canon Diablo troilite, which gave a delta(33)S of 0.04parts per thousand and a delta(34)S of -0.06parts per thousand compared to the values obtained for S-1 of 0.07parts per thousand and -0.20parts per thousand, respectively. Two pyrite samples from a banded-iron formation from the 3710 Ma Isua Greenstone Belt were analysed using this technique and yielded MIF (Delta(33)S of 2.45 and 3.31parts per thousand) comparable to pyrite previously analysed by secondary ion probe. MONTE SIÃO EXTREMIDADE DO SAFON: Estudo da influência da mitologia cananéia na Teologia de Sião a partir da análise exegética do Salmo 48

A Teologia de Sião expressa pela tradição dos filhos de Corá é de certa forma curiosa. É implicante admitir a idéia de uma influência cananeia na Teologia de Sião. Não há como negar esse fato, pois o Salmo 48 parece realmente possuir esta influência. É uma influência cananeia e também das tradições do Sul judaíta. Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo analisar tal teologia de Sião existente em Jerusalém e apresentada no Salmo 48. Isto para chegar a uma resposta acerca da influência que os filhos de Corá podem ter sofrido da religião cananeia, ao utilizar elementos dos mitos cananeus na composição do Salmo 48 e de outros salmos de sua coleção. Termos como Safon, mar, morte, Monte Sião e outros, e conceitos como mitologia, montanha sagrada, extremidade do mundo, Olimpo, etc, fazem pensar que eles de fato queriam sobrepor os mitos cananeus apresentando uma nova leitura, a partir da fé em Javé. Os filhos de Corá possuíam tradição do Norte israelita. As cidades onde eles habitaram estavam situadas em Efraim, Manassés e Dã. Algumas cidades de Manassés e Efraim eram cananeias. Os reis do Norte eram em sua maioria promotores da religião cananeia. Este era o ambiente onde os filhos de Corá habitaram e cumpriram seu ministério levítico.

Synthesis and expression of a gene encoding a 48-residue repeat in the Pseudomonas syringae ice nucleation protein

The aim of this work was to construct short analogues of the repetitive water-binding domain of the Pseudomonas syringae ice nucleation protein, InaZ. Structural analysis of these analogues might provide data pertaining to the protein-water contacts that underlie ice nucleation. An artificial gene coding for a 48-mer repeat sequence from InaZ was synthesized from four oligodeoxyribonucleotides and ligated into the expression vector, pGEX2T. The recombinant vector was cloned in Escherichia coli and a glutathione S-transferase fusion protein obtained. This fusion protein displayed a low level of ice-nucleating activity when tested by a droplet freezing assay. The fusion protein could be cleaved with thrombin, providing a means for future recovery of the 48-mer peptide in amounts suitable for structural analysis by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Eight measurements of heat flow in the Pacific floor were made during Cruise 48 of R/V Vityaz; four on the Manihiki Plateau, three - on the Marcus-Necker Rise, and one - in the Hawaiian Trough. Higher than average heat flows, up to 3.2 HFU, were recorded on submarine uplifts.

A Framework for Citizen-Centred Social Statistics and Analysis (Working Paper 48)

Economic policy-making has long been more integrated than social policy-making in part because the statistics and much of the analysis that supports economic policy are based on a common conceptual framework – the system of national accounts. People interested in economic analysis and economic policy share a common language of communication, one that includes both concepts and numbers. This paper examines early attempts to develop a system of social statistics that would mirror the system of national accounts, particular the work on the development of social accounts that took place mainly in the 60s and 70s. It explores the reasons why these early initiatives failed but argues that the preconditions now exist to develop a new conceptual framework to support integrated social statistics – and hence a more coherent, effective social policy. Optimism is warranted for two reasons. First, we can make use of the radical transformation that has taken place in information technology both in processing data and in providing wide access to the knowledge that can flow from the data. Second, the conditions exist to begin to shift away from the straight jacket of government-centric social statistics, with its implicit assumption that governments must be the primary actors in finding solutions to social problems. By supporting the decision-making of all the players (particularly individual citizens) who affect social trends and outcomes, we can start to move beyond the sterile, ideological discussions that have dominated much social discourse in the past and begin to build social systems and structures that evolve, almost automatically, based on empirical evidence of ‘what works best for whom’. The paper describes a Canadian approach to developing a framework, or common language, to support the evolution of an integrated, citizen-centric system of social statistics and social analysis. This language supports the traditional social policy that we have today; nothing is lost. However, it also supports a quite different social policy world, one where individual citizens and families (not governments) are seen as the central players – a more empirically-driven world that we have referred to as the ‘enabling society’.
