Manguezal é um ecossistema costeiro que ocorre nas regiões tropicais e subtropicais do planeta, ocupando a zona entremarés dos oceanos, e sendo caracterizado pela presença de vegetação arbórea adaptada à condições adversas de salinidade, substrato, baixa oxigenação e submersão periódica. A pressão sobre os manguezais do Estado do Rio de Janeiro vem se intensificando nas últimas décadas, e estão associadas a vetores de pressão como os aterros, desmatamentos, queimadas, corte seletivo de madeira, captura predatória de moluscos e crustáceos, lançamento de efluentes de origens diversas, a superexplotação dos recursos pesqueiros e a utilização de técnicas e apetrechos inadequados. Considerando a inexistência de mapeamento integrado e atualizado dos remanescentes de manguezal, indicando sua localização e dimensionamento, o presente estudo veio suprir essa demanda, construindo uma ferramenta consistente para a análise dos principais vetores a que estão expostos, subsidiando a proposição de ações para a conservação e monitoramento desse ecossistema. Essas ações consideram a necessidade de preservação da biodiversidade, da manutenção da atividade pesqueira, da estabilidade da linha de costa, e da subsistência de diversas populações que habitam a região costeira. O mapeamento dos manguezais do Estado do Rio de Janeiro foi elaborado a partir da interpretação visual de ortofotografias coloridas do ano de 2005, na escala 1:10.000, tendo sido realizadas checagens de campo para identificação da verdade terrestre. Os remanescentes mapeados totalizam uma área de aproximadamente 17.720 ha, estando distribuídos por sete regiões hidrográficas localizadas na zona costeira fluminense. Esses ocorrem com mais freqüência, e com maiores dimensões, nas regiões da baía da Ilha Grande, Guandu(Sepetiba) e baía de Guanabara. O estudo contemplou ainda o levantamento e sistematização de dados cartográficos e de sensoriamento remoto, e a identificação e análise dos principais vetores de pressão que atuam sobre esses, a partir da adaptação da metodologia da Análise de Cadeia Causal. Nessa análise foram identificados como principais problemas ambientais dos manguezais fluminenses, a Modificação de habitats e comunidades, a Poluição, e a Exploração não sustentável dos recursos pesqueiros, todos associados aos diferentes vetores de pressão já relacionados. Por fim, foram apresentadas propostas de ações para subsidiar a implementação da Política Estadual para a Conservação dos Manguezais do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, contemplando os níveis operacional, de planejamento, e político. A reativação do Grupo Técnico Permanente sobre Manguezais é de vital importância para a retomada dessas discussões e para a implementação de ações, apoiado na ampliação dos conhecimentos sobre esse rico ecossistema e, integrando e fortalecendo a atuação dos diversos atores envolvidos, buscando assim garantir a integridade dos manguezais fluminenses

A novel Vb(3+)-Er-(3+) codoped phosphate glass for high power flashlamp pumping and high repetition rate laser at 1.54 mu m, designated EAT5-2, is developed. The weight-loss rate of is 1.3 x 10(-5) gcm(-2) h(-1) in boiling water, which is comparable to Kigre's QX-Er glass. Some spectroscopic parameters are analysed by Judd-Ofelt theory and McCumber theory The emission cross section is calculated to be 0.73 x 10(-20) cm(2). The thermo-mechanical properties of EAT5-2 are modified after an ion-exchange chemical strengthening process in a KNO3/NaNO3 molten salt bath. The thresholds for optical damage from the flashlamp pumping are tested on glass rods. A repetition rate of 15 Hz is achieved for chemically strengthened glass. The laser experimental results at. 1.54 mu m from flashlamp pumping are also reported.

ZrO2, films were deposited by electron-beam evaporation with the oxygen partial pressure varying from 3 X 10(-3) Pa to I I X 10(-3) Pa. The phase structure of the samples was characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD). The thermal absorption of the films was measured by the surface thermal lensing technique. A spectrophotometer was employed to measure the refractive indices of the samples. The laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) was assessed using a 1064, nm Nd: yttritium-aluminium-garnet pulsed laser at pulse width of 12 ns. The influence of oxygen partial pressure on the microstructure and LIDT of ZrO2 films was investigated. XRD data revealed that the films changed from polycrystalline to amorphous as the oxygen partial pressure increased. The variation of refractive index at 550 nm wavelength indicated that the packing density of the films decreased gradually with increasing oxygen partial pressure. The absorptance of the samples decreased monotonically from 125.2 to 84.5 ppm with increasing oxygen partial pressure. The damage threshold, values increased from 18.5 to 26.7 J/cm(2) for oxygen partial pressures varying from 3 X 10(-3) Pa to 9 X 10(-3) Pa, but decreased to 17.3 J/cm(2) in the case of I I X 10(-3) Pa. 该成果属于植物组织学研究范畴,主要内容有:1、热带兰花未成熟种子的试管苗培养和组织培养;2、热带兰花试管苗商品化生产;3、热带兰花温室栽培生产技术。从热带兰花商品化生产需要出发,在60多个热带兰花品种中筛选出石斛兰、蝴蝶兰、卡特兰等10多个优良品种为中试材料,用生物工程技术快速繁殖方法(包括未成熟种子的试管培养和组织培养方法)大量繁殖热带兰花,研制出从试管培养到生产开花植株一整套工艺流程,达到或超过预定生产指标,筛选出原球茎或丛生芽每40天增殖4-5倍的培养基。该成果生产的试管苗在生长过程采用开放式为主封闭式为辅的两种形式代替单一的封闭式培养,大大的节省能源;改进培养器皿结构确保污染率在5%以下;简化培养基等措施,降低成本70-80%。试管苗移栽成活率达到89%以上,且所需要的条件较简便:1、控制温度26±2℃;相对湿度80%的季节出瓶;2、具备防雨水和散射光的简易棚;3、用椰糠作为移植基质。成活率达90%以上,实现肥料国产化,利用国产原料配制不同苗期的专用肥,与使用进口肥料相比,节省成本约80%,并且效果好,植株生长周期短,花的质和量符合国际商品化的要求。初步获得一定的经济、社会效益。成果达国内领先水平。

The reproductive biology of blue marlin (Makaira nigricans) was assessed from 1001 fish (ranging from 121 to 275 cm in eye-to-fork length; EFL) caught by Taiwanese offshore longliners in the western Pacific Ocean from September 2000 to December 2001 and from 843 gonad samples from these fish, The overall sex ratio of the catch was approximately 1:1 dur ing the sampling period, but blue marlin are sexually dimorphic; females are larger than males. Reproductive activity (assessed by histology), a gonadosomatic index, and the distribution of oocyte diameters, indicated that spawning occurred predominantly from May to September. The estimated sizes-at-maturity (EFL50) were 179.76 ±1.01 cm (mean ±standard error) for females and 130 ±1 cm EFL for males. Blue marlin are multiple spawners and oocytes develop asynchronously. The proportion of mature females with ovaries containing postovulatory follicles (0.41) and hydrated oocytes (0.34) indicated that the blue marlin spawned once every 2–3 days on average. Batch fecundity (BF) for 26 females with the most advanced oocytes (≥1000 μm), but without postovulatory follicles, ranged from 2.11 to 13.50 million eggs (6.94 ± 0.54 million eggs). The relationships between batch fecundity (BF, in millions of eggs) and EFL and round weight (RW, kg) were BF = 3.29 × 10 –12 EFL5.31 (r2 = 0.70) and BF = 1.59 × 10–3 RW 1.73 (r2= 0.67), respectively. Thirty-three skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) (53−73 cm fork length) were caught and released with implanted archival tags in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean during April 2004. Six skipjack tuna were recap-tured, and 9.3 to 10.1 days of depth and temperature data were down-loaded from five recovered tags. The vertical habitat-use distributions indicated that skipjack tuna not associated with floating objects spent 98.6% of their time above the thermocline (depth=44 m) during the night, but spent 37.7% of their time below the thermocline during the day. When not associated with floating objects, skipjack tuna displayed repetitive bounce-diving behavior to depths between 50 and 300 m during the day. The deepest dive recorded was 596 m, where the ambient temperature was 7.7°C. One dive was particularly remarkable because the fish contin-uously swam for 2 hours below the thermocline to a maximum depth of 330 m. During that dive, the ambient temperature reached a low of 10.5°C, and the peritoneal cavity temperature reached a low of 15.9°C. The vertical movements and habitat use of skipjack tuna, revealed in this study, provide a much greater understanding of their ecological niche and catchability by purse-seine fisheries.

Micafungin is an effective antifungal agent useful for the therapy of invasive candidiasis. Candida albicans is the most common cause of invasive candidiasis; however, infections due to non-C. albicans species, such as Candida parapsilosis, are rising. Killing and postantifungal effects (PAFE) are important factors in both dose interval choice and infection outcome. The aim of this study was to determinate the micafungin PAFE against 7 C. albicans strains, 5 Candida dubliniensis, 2 Candida Africana, 3 C. parapsilosis, 2 Candida metapsilosis and 2 Candida orthopsilosis. For PAFE studies, cells were exposed to micafungin for 1 h at concentrations ranging from 0.12 to 8 mu g/ml. Time-kill experiments (TK) were conducted at the same concentrations. Samples were removed at each time point (0-48 h) and viable counts determined. Micafungin (2 mu g/ml) was fungicidal (>= 3 log(10) reduction) in TK against 5 out of 14 (36%) strains of C. albicans complex. In PAFE experiments, fungicidal endpoint was achieved against 2 out of 14 strains (14%). In TK against C. parapsilosis, 8 mu g/ml of micafungin turned out to be fungicidal against 4 out 7 (57%) strains. Conversely, fungicidal endpoint was not achieved in PAFE studies. PAFE results for C. albicans complex (41.83 +/- 2.18 h) differed from C. parapsilosis complex (8.07 +/- 4.2 h) at the highest tested concentration of micafungin. In conclusion, micafungin showed significant differences in PAFE against C. albicans and C. parapsilosis complexes, being PAFE for the C. albicans complex longer than for the C. parapsilosis complex.

Age and growth estimates for salmon sharks (Lamna ditropis) in the eastern North Pacific were derived from 182 vertebral centra collected from sharks ranging in length from 62.2 to 213.4 cm pre-caudal length (PCL) and compared to previously published age and growth data for salmon sharks in the western North Pacific. Eastern North Pacific female and male salmon sharks were aged up to 20 and 17 years, respectively. Relative marginal increment (RMI) analysis showed that postnatal rings form annually between January and March. Von Bertalanffy growth parameters derived from vertebral length-at-age data are L∞ =207.4 cm PCL, k=0.17/yr, and t0=−2.3 years for females (n=166), and L∞ =182.8 cm PCL, k=0.23/yr , and t0=−1.9 years for males (n=16). Age at maturity was estimated to range from six to nine years for females (median pre-caudal length of 164.7 cm PCL) and from three to five years old for males (median precaudal length of 124.0 cm PCL). Weight-length relationships for females and males in the eastern North Pacific are W=8.2 × 10_05 × L2.759 –06 × L3.383 (r2 =0.99) and W=3.2 × 10 (r2 =0.99), respectively. Our results show that female and male salmon sharks in the eastern North Pacific possess a faster growth rate, reach sexual maturity earlier, and attain greater weight-at-length than their same-sex counterparts living in the western North Pacific.

Excesso de peso (sobrepeso e obesidade) e transtornos mentais comuns são importantes problemas de saúde pública no Brasil e no mundo. A associação entre ambos tem sido investigada por pesquisadores, porém os resultados ainda são conflitantes. Estudos realizados com nutricionistas têm dado maior ênfase à prática de atuação, entretanto, poucos abordaram questões de saúde desses profissionais, principalmente sobre o excesso de peso e sofrimento psíquico. Objetivo - Analisar a associação entre sobrepeso, obesidade e transtornos mentais comuns nesses profissionais. Métodos - Estudo seccional, realizado com 289 nutricionistas da rede pública de hospitais do município do Rio de Janeiro, no período de outubro de 2011 a agosto de 2012. A avaliação do excesso de peso corporal foi realizada com base no Índice de Massa Corporal (kg/m2) através da aferição de peso e altura, e os transtornos mentais comuns através do General Health Questionarie (GHQ-12). Variáveis sócio-demográficas, laborativas e de saúde também foram incluídas no estudo. Resultados - A prevalência de sobrepeso foi de 32,3% e de obesidade, 15,3%. A prevalência de transtornos mentais comuns (TMC) foi de 37,7%. A análise bruta demonstrou uma associação negativa entre transtornos mentais comuns e sobrepeso (OR 0,68; IC95% 0,39 1,20) e positiva para obesidade (OR 1,34; IC95% 0,65 2,75) que não se modificou quando ajustado pelas variáveis socioeconômicas (SES), laborativas e de saúde (OR= 0,60 IC95% 0.32 1,10) para sobrepeso e para a obesidade (OR= 1.09 IC95% 0,50 2,37). Conclusão - Os resultados do estudo destacam as altas prevalências de sobrepeso, obesidade e transtornos mentais comuns, bem como, a magnitude da associação entre os eventos, ambos sem significância estatística. Sugerimos novos estudos em que se possam identificar os mecanismos envolvidos nesta relação, bem como os fatores relacionados às condições de trabalho e de vida que possam estar afetando a saúde do nutricionista que é formado para cuidar da saúde população muitas vezes em detrimento da sua própria saúde.

The effect of aquaculture, especially shrimp farming, on agriculture has caused heated debate among aquaculturists, agriculturists, and non-governmental organizations. As data on the negative impact of shrimp farming on adjacent rice fields are not available, a study was undertaken in rice fields skirting three shrimp farms: a semi-intensive farm; an extensive farm; and a semi-intensive farm with a buffer zone. The buffer zone was found to be helpful in preventing salinization of the adjacent agricultural fields and the Electrical Conductivity (EC) values (less than 1) reported were found to be harmless to the rice crop. Thus, aquaculture and agriculture can coexist in coastal areas if there are buffer zones in between.
