The thermodynamic performance of a refrigeration system can be improved by reducing the compression work by a particular technique for a specific heat removal rate. This study examines the effect of small concentrations of Al2O3 (50 nm) nanoparticles dispersion in the mineral oil based lubricant on the: viscosity, thermal conductivity, and lubrication characteristics as well as the overall performance (based on the Second Law of Thermodynamics) of the refrigerating system using R134a or R600a as refrigerants. The study looked at the influences of variables: i) refrigerant charge (100, 110, 120 and 130 g), ii) rotational speed of the condenser blower (800 and 1100 RPM) and iii) nanoparticle concentration (0.1 and 0.5 g/l) on the system performance based on the Taguchi method in a matrix of L8 trials with the criterion "small irreversibility is better”. They were carried pulldown and cycling tests according to NBR 12866 and NBR 12869, respectively, to evaluate the operational parameters: on-time ratio, cycles per hour, suction and discharge pressures, oil sump temperature, evaporation and condensation temperatures, energy consumption at the set-point, total energy consumption and compressor power. In order to evaluate the nanolubricant characteristics, accelerated tests were performed in a HFRR bench. In each 60 minutes test with nanolubricants at a certain concentration (0, 0.1 and 0.5 g/l), with three replications, the sphere (diameter 6.00 ± 0.05 mm, Ra 0.05 ± 0.005 um, AISI 52100 steel, E = 210 GPa, HRC 62 ± 4) sliding on a flat plate (cast iron FC200, Ra <0.5 ± 0.005 um) in a reciprocating motion with amplitude of 1 mm, frequency 20 Hz and a normal load of 1,96 N. The friction coefficient signals were recorded by sensors coupled to the HFRR system. There was a trend commented bit in the literature: a nanolubricant viscosity reduction at the low nanoparticles concentrations. It was found the dominant trend in the literature: increased thermal conductivity with increasing nanoparticles mass fraction in the base fluid. Another fact observed is the significant thermal conductivity growth of nanolubricant with increasing temperature. The condenser fan rotational speed is the most influential parameter (46.192%) in the refrigerator performance, followed by R600a charge (38.606%). The Al2O3 nanoparticles concentration in the lubricant plays a minor influence on system performance, with 12.44%. The results of power consumption indicates that the nanoparticles addition in the lubricant (0.1 g/L), together with R600a, the refrigerator consumption is reduced of 22% with respect to R134a and POE lubricant. Only the Al2O3 nanoparticles addition in the lubricant results in a consumption reduction of about 5%.

The surface layer of bottom sediments on the Barents Sea shelf has an irregular but generally very low abundance of diatoms. Tests of species belonging to present-day diatom flora were absent in nearly half of samples; their abundance was only a few shells per gram of dry sediment in 30% of the samples, it was up to 100 shells per gram in 9% of the samples, and was in thousands of shells per gram in only 13% of the samples. The lowest abundances of diatom shells were found in sediments of the eastern and northeastern parts of the sea owing to unfavorable sedimentation conditions and deficiency of dissolved silica in water. But distribution of diatom species on the surface of bottom sediments is strictly consistent with their present-day ranges. About 30% of the samples contained re-deposited Cretaceous and Paleogene diatoms indicating that bottom sediments have largely formed by scouring and re-deposition of underlying material.

Hydroxylated glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (hydroxy-GDGTs) were detected in marine sediments of diverse depositional regimes and ages. Mass spectrometric evidence, complemented by information gleaned from two-dimensional (2D) 1H-13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy on minute quantities of target analyte isolated from marine sediment, allowed us to identify one major compound as a monohydroxy-GDGT with acyclic biphytanyl moieties (OH-GDGT-0). NMR spectroscopic and mass spectrometric data indicate the presence of a tertiary hydroxyl group suggesting the compounds are the tetraether analogues of the widespread hydroxylated archaeol derivatives that have received great attention in geochemical studies of the last two decades. Three other related compounds were assigned as acyclic dihydroxy-GDGT (2OH-GDGT-0) and monohydroxy-GDGT with one (OH-GDGT-1) and two cyclopentane rings (OH-GDGT-2). Based on the identification of hydroxy-GDGT core lipids, a group of previously reported unknown intact polar lipids (IPLs), including the ubiquitously distributed H341-GDGT (Lipp J. S. and Hinrichs K. -U. (2009) Structural diversity and fate of intact polar lipids in marine sediments. Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta 73, 6816-6833), and its analogues were tentatively identified as glycosidic hydroxy-GDGTs. In addition to marine sediments, we also detected hydroxy-GDGTs in a culture of Methanothermococcus thermolithotrophicus. Given the previous finding of the putative polar precursor H341-GDGT in the planktonic marine crenarchaeon Nitrosopumilus maritimus, these compounds are synthesized by representatives of both cren- and euryarchaeota. The ubiquitous distribution and apparent substantial abundance of hydroxy-GDGT core lipids in marine sediments (up to 8% of total isoprenoid core GDGTs) point to their potential as proxies.

In order to understand the vertical transport of particulate matter, suspended and settling particles were collected along a meridional transect between 46°N and 35°S and an equatorial longitudinal transect between 135°E and 175°E in the Pacific. The low COrganic/N atomic ratios (<8.2) of suspended particulate organic matter (OM) and good correlation between particulate organic carbon (OC) and chlorophyll-a confirmed that the suspended particulate OM in the surface water was mainly produced by phytoplankton. Only 0.1-3.2% of primary production was transported to 1.3 km water depth in the boreal central Pacific. All data on settling particles (excluding deep trap data) showed strongly positive correlation between total mass and OM fluxes with high correlation factor of 0.93. Biogenic opal-producing plankton, mainly diatoms were responsible for most of the vertical transport of particulate OM in association with higher COrganic/CCarbonate ratios in the subarctic and equatorial hemipelagic regions in the Pacific. This vertical transport of settling particles potentially works as a sink of CO2. In the transition zone during the May 1993, large difference between PCO2 (<300 µatm) in the surface water and pCO2 (340 µatm) in the atmosphere was actually due to enhanced particulate OM flux. Since the deep water of the Pacific is enriched in CO2 and nutrients, upwelled seawater may tend to release CO2 to the atmosphere. However, higher production of particulate matter could reduce the partial pressure of CO2 in the surface water. Also terrestrial nutrients' inputs in the western equatorial Pacific have potential for the reduction of CO2 in the surface water.

Concentrations of mineral phosphorus in interstitial waters from sediments of the Southeast Atlantic generally increases from the ocean bed to the continental slope and shelf. In diatomaceous oozes of the Southwest Africa shelf, phosphorus concentration in fresh interstitial waters reaches 2.5 mg/l in absence of phosphorite concretions and 0.1-0.7 mg/l in their presence. After prolonged storage of samples concentration of dissolved mineral phosphorus sometimes increases up to 7-8 mg/l. The key factor regulating phosphorus content of solid and liquid phases of unaltered sediments are content and composition of organic matter.

The surface and sub-ice layer habitats and their metazoan fauna were studied on a drifting pack-ice floe in the western Weddell Sea from 29 November 2004 to 1 January 2005 during the "Ice Station POLarstern" (ISPOL). Flooding of the floe occurred at some places, and the establishment of surface layers with a brownish colour due to growing algae was observed at several sampling sites. The average surface-layer temperature, brine salinity and brine volume were -1.4 °C, 25.3 and 54%, respectively. The temperature-salinity relationship in the surface layer was seldom at equilibrium conditions. Chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentrations in the brine varied between 1.0 and 53.5 µg /L. Surface-layer thickness, salinity, Chl a concentration and copepod abundances were generally higher at the edge of the floe than in the inner part. The sympagic copepod species Drescheriella glacialis/racovitzai and Stephos longipes, with abundances ranging between 0 and 3830 ind/L (median: 2 ind/L) and 0 and 1293 ind/L (median: 4 ind/L), respectively, were the dominant members of the surface-layer meiofauna. Their populations consisted mainly of adults and early naupliar stages, which points to an active reproduction of these species within the surface layer. Other taxa found in the surface layer were undetermined turbellarians, the gastropod Tergipes antarcticus, and, for the first time, the ctenophore Callianira antarctica, and the amphipods Eusirus antarcticus and Eusirus tridentatus. During the course of our study, slight melting at the ice underside took place, releasing sympagic organisms to the water column. Chl a concentrations in the sub-ice water layer were very low (0.1-0.5 µg /L), except for 25 December when the Chl a concentration at 0 m depth increased to 2.3 µg /L. The most dominant sympagic copepod species found in the sub-ice layer was Ectinosoma sp., with abundances ranging between 1 and 599 ind/m**3 (median: 25 ind/m**3). Other sympagic copepod species occurring regularly in this habitat were D. glacialis/racovitzai, Diarthrodes cf. lilacinus, Idomene antarctica and S. longipes. All of these sympagic species were generally found in higher abundances at 0 m depth underneath the ice than at 5 m depth, in contrast to pelagic copepod species that occurred more frequently at 5 m depth. Niche separation and probable life-cycle strategies of dominant sympagic metazoans are discussed.

Biodiesel is a renewable fuel derived from vegetable oils or animal fats, which can be a total or partial substitute for diesel. Since 2005, this fuel was introduced in the Brazilian energy matrix through Law 11.097 that determines the percentage of biodiesel added to diesel oil as well as monitoring the insertion of this fuel in market. The National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) establish the obligation of adding 7% (v/v) of biodiesel to diesel commercialized in the country, making crucial the analytical control of this content. Therefore, in this study were developed and validated methodologies based on the use of Mid Infrared Spectroscopy (MIR) and Multivariate Calibration by Partial Least Squares (PLS) to quantify the methyl and ethyl biodiesels content of cotton and jatropha in binary blends with diesel at concentration range from 1.00 to 30.00% (v/v), since this is the range specified in standard ABNT NBR 15568. The biodiesels were produced from two routes, using ethanol or methanol, and evaluated according to the parameters: oxidative stability, water content, kinematic viscosity and density, presenting results according to ANP Resolution No. 45/2014. The built PLS models were validated on the basis of ASTM E1655-05 for Infrared Spectroscopy and Multivariate Calibration and ABNT NBR 15568, with satisfactory results due to RMSEP (Root Mean Square Error of Prediction) values below 0.08% (<0.1%), correlation coefficients (R) above 0.9997 and the absence of systematic error (bias). Therefore, the methodologies developed can be a promising alternative in the quality control of this fuel.

INTRODUCTION: Preeclampsia is a vascular disorder in pregnancyand is biochemical characterization by high soluble Flt-1 and lowplacenta growth factor as well as an imbalance in redox homeostasis.During conditions of high oxidative stress, cysteine residues on keyproteins are reversibly altered by S-glutathionylation, modifying theirfunction. Glutaredoxin-1 (Glrx) enzymatically catalyzes the removal of S-glutathione adducts, conferring reversible signaling dynamics toproteins with redox-sensitive cysteines. The role of Glrx in preeclampsiais unknown.METHODS: Immunohistochemistry and Western blot analysis for Glrx orglutathione were conducted on human placenta samples collected pre-termfrom early onset preeclamptic patients (n=10) or non-preeclamptic induceddeliveries (n=9). Human endothelial cells were infected with adenovirusencoding Glrx or LacZ prior to the cells being exposed to hypoxia (0.1%O2, 24h) to measure changes in soluble Flt-1 (sFlt-1). Quantitative PCRand ELISA were used to measure sFlt-1 at mRNA and protein level.RESULTS: Immunohistochemical staining for GSH revealed lowerS-glutathionylation adducts in preeclampsia placenta in comparison tocontrols. Glrx expression, which catalyses de-glutathionylation wasenhanced in early onset preeclampsia compared to pre-term controlsamples. In contrast, no change was observed in preeclamptic and IUGRplacentas at full term. In endothelial cells overexpressing Glrx, sFlt-1expression was dramatically enhanced at mRNA (3-fold P<0.05) andprotein level (5 fold P>0.01, n=4) after hypoxia andoverexpressing Glrxin mice enhanced levels of circulating sFlt-1 during in vivo ischemia.CONCLUSIONS: Enhanced Glrx expression in preeclamptic placentain line with an apparent decrease in S-glutathionylation may leavekey proteins susceptible to irreversible oxidation in conditions of highoxidative stress.

We measured light absorption in 42 marine snow, sea ice, seawater, brine, and frost flower samples collected during the OASIS field campaign between February 27 and April 15, 2009. Samples represented multiple sites between landfast ice and open pack ice in coastal areas approximately 5 km west of Barrow, Alaska. The chromophores that are most commonly measured in snow, H2O2, NO3-, and NO2-, on average account for less than 1% of sunlight absorption in our samples. Instead, light absorption is dominated by unidentified "residual" species, likely organic compounds. Light absorption coefficients for the frost flowers on first-year sea ice are, on average, 40 times larger than values for terrestrial snow samples at Barrow, suggesting very large rates of photochemical reactions in frost flowers. For our marine samples the calculated rates of sunlight absorption and OH production from known chromophores are (0.1-1.4) x 10**14 (photons/cm**3/s) and (5-70) x 10**-12 (mol/L/s), respectively. Our residual spectra are similar to spectra of marine chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM), suggesting that CDOM is the dominant chromophore in our samples. Based on our light absorption measurements we estimate dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations in Barrow seawater and frost flowers as approximately 130 and 360 µM C, respectively. We expect that CDOM is a major source of OH in our marine samples, and it is likely to have other significant photochemistry as well.
