To detect and monitor long-term ecosystem responses to environmental variability, managers must utilize reliable and quantitative techniques to predict future ecosystem responses. Canine teeth from 67 male Australian fur seals (aged 2-19 yr), collected at Seal Rocks, between 1967 and 1976, were measured for relative growth within the dentine growth layer groups (GLGs), as an index of body growth. Fluctuations in relative growth were apparent during 1956-1971, suggesting interannual variation in prey resources within Bass Strait. These were positively correlated with the Southern Oscillation Index and negatively with the Indian Ocean Subtropical Dipole, both on a 2 yr lag. The observed delay may reflect the time required for the nutrient cascade to filter through to the predominantly benthic prey of Australian fur seals. Stable isotope analysis (?15N/?13C) was also used to investigate whether fluctuations in growth were associated with differences in diet. Relative growth was found to be negatively correlated with ?15N, suggesting years of greater resource availability may be associated with individuals consuming proportionally more prey biomass of lower isotopic value. This study demonstrates that fluctuations in the dentine GLGs of male Australian fur seals are related to environmental parameters, suggesting variation in body growth is mediated by changes in prey resources

Titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V is the most commonly used titanium alloy in the aerospace and biomedical industries due to its superior material properties. An experimental investigation has been carried out to evaluate the machinability of high performance aerospace alloys (Ti-6Al-4V) to determine their in service performance characteristics based on different machining strategies. Nearly 80-90% of the titanium used in airframes is Ti-6Al-4V. The experimental design consist of face milling Ti-6Al-4V at 12 different combinations of cutting parameters consisting of Depth Of Cut (DoC)- 1, 2 and 3 mm; speeds- 60 and 100 m/min; coolant on/off and at constant feed rate of 0.04mm/tooth. Post machining analysis consists of cutting force measurement, surface texture analysis and metallographic analysis. The future work consists of in-depth investigation into the phase transformational reactions during machining.

Titanium alloys are of great demand in the aerospace and biomedical industries. Most the titanium products are either cast or sintered to required shape and finish machined to get the appropriate surface texture to meet the design requirements. Ti-6Al-4V is often referred as work horse among the titanium alloys due to its heavy use in the aerospace industry. This paper is an attempt to investigate and improve the machining performance of Ti-6Al-4V. Thin wall machining is an advance machining technique especially used in machining turbine blades which can be done both in a conventional way and using a special technique known as trochoidal milling. The experimental design consists of conducting trials using combination of cutting parameters such as cutting speed (vc), 90 and 120 m/min; feed/tooth (fz) of 0.25 and 0.35 mm/min; step over (ae) 0.3 and 0.2; at constant depth of cut (ap) 20mm and using coolant. A preliminary assessment of machinability of Ti-6Al-4V during thin wall machining using trochoidal milling is done. A correlation established using cutting force, surface texture and dimensional accuracy.

Periodontitis and other bone loss diseases, decreasing bone volume and strength, have a significant impact on millions of people with the risk of tooth loss and bone fracture. The integrity and strength of bone are maintained through the balance between bone resorption and bone formation by osteoclasts and osteoblasts, respectively, so the loss of bone results from the disruption of such balance due to increased resorption or/and decreased formation of bone. The goal of therapies for diseases of bone loss is to reduce bone loss, improve bone formation, and then keep healthy bone density. Current therapies have mostly relied on long-term medication, exercise, anti-inflammatory therapies, and changing of the life style. However there are some limitations for some patients in the effective treatments for bone loss diseases because of the complexity of bone loss. Interleukin-10 (IL-10) is a potent anti-inflammatory cytokine, and recent studies have indicated that IL-10 can contribute to the maintenance of bone mass through inhibition of osteoclastic bone resorption and regulation of osteoblastic bone formation. This paper will provide a brief overview of the role of IL-10 in bone loss diseases and discuss the possibility of IL-10 adoption in therapy of bone loss diseases therapy.

Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI) is a type of nodular, ductile cast iron subjected to heat treatments-austenitising and austempering. Whilst machining is conducted prior to heat treatment and offers no significant difficulty, machining post heat treatment is demanding and often avoided. Phase transformation of retained austenite to martensite leading to poor machinability characteristics is a common problem experienced during machining. Study of phase transformations is an investigative study on the factors-plastic strain (εp) and thermal energy (Q) which effect phase transformations during machining. The experimental design consists of face milling grade 1200 at variable Depth of Cut (DoC) range from 1 to 4 mm, coolant on/off, at constant speed, 1992 rpm and feed rate, 0.1 mm/tooth. Plastic strain (εp) and martensite content (M) at fracture point for each grade was evaluated by tensile testing. The effect of thermal energy (Q) on phase transformations was also verified through temperature measurements at DoC 3 and 1 mm using thermocouples embedded into the workpiece. Finally, the amount of plastic strain (εp) and thermal energy (Q) responsible for a given martensite increase (M) during milling was related and calculated using a mathematical function, M=f (εp, Q). The future work of the thesis involves an in-depth study on the new link discovered through this research: mathematical model relating the role of plastic strain and thermal energy in martensite formation.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify if, and to what extent, permanent incisor wear differed with age of goat and farm of origin on commercial Australian Angora goat farms. DESIGN: Observations were made on three Angora goat farms in the wheat-sheep zone of Victoria, each managed according to the farmer's practices. Farmers provided a representative flock of does. METHODS: The proportion and pattern of wear of permanent incisors were recorded and percentage wear calculated. After log(y + 10) transformation, a parsimonious general linear model was developed to relate wear to farm and age, with age considered as a continuous variate. RESULTS: The range in wear of the permanent incisors was 0-100%. For each farm, the most parsimonious model for permanent first incisor wear and average wear of all permanent incisors was a separate straight line relating the transformed incisor wear to the age of doe. The models accounted for 66-73% of variance. On each farm the incisor wear was similar and low for ages up to approximately 4 years. On all farms, the amount of incisor wear increased dramatically with age, although the rate of increase differed with each farm. CONCLUSIONS: Permanent incisor wear increased with age of goat and differed with farm of origin. Angora goat farmers need to be aware of the potential for incisor wear to affect doe production and health.

Small variations in signalling pathways have been linked to phenotypic diversity and speciation. In vertebrates, teeth represent a reservoir of adaptive morphological structures that are prone to evolutionary change. Cyprinid fish display an impressive diversity in tooth number, but the signals that generate such diversity are unknown. Here, we show that retinoic acid (RA) availability influences tooth number size in Cyprinids. Heterozygous adult zebrafish heterozygous for the cyp26b1 mutant that encodes an enzyme able to degrade RA possess an extra tooth in the ventral row. Expression analysis of pharyngeal mesenchyme markers such as dlx2a and lhx6 shows lateral, anterior and dorsal expansion of these markers in RA-treated embryos, whereas the expression of the dental epithelium markers dlx2b and dlx3b is unchanged. Our analysis suggests that changes in RA signalling play an important role in the diversification of teeth in Cyprinids. Our work illustrates that through subtle changes in the expression of rate-limiting enzymes, the RA pathway is an active player of tooth evolution in fish.

OBJECTIVES: The Teeth Tales trial aimed to establish a model for child oral health promotion for culturally diverse communities in Australia. DESIGN: An exploratory trial implementing a community-based child oral health promotion intervention for Australian families from migrant backgrounds. Mixed method, longitudinal evaluation. SETTING: The intervention was based in Moreland, a culturally diverse locality in Melbourne, Australia. PARTICIPANTS: Families with 1-4-year-old children, self-identified as being from Iraqi, Lebanese or Pakistani backgrounds residing in Melbourne. Participants residing close to the intervention site were allocated to intervention. INTERVENTION: The intervention was conducted over 5 months and comprised community oral health education sessions led by peer educators and follow-up health messages. OUTCOME MEASURES: This paper reports on the intervention impacts, process evaluation and descriptive analysis of health, knowledge and behavioural changes 18 months after baseline data collection. RESULTS: Significant differences in the Debris Index (OR=0.44 (0.22 to 0.88)) and the Modified Gingival Index (OR=0.34 (0.19 to 0.61)) indicated increased tooth brushing and/or improved toothbrushing technique in the intervention group. An increased proportion of intervention parents, compared to those in the comparison group reported that they had been shown how to brush their child's teeth (OR=2.65 (1.49 to 4.69)). Process evaluation results highlighted the problems with recruitment and retention of the study sample (275 complete case families). The child dental screening encouraged involvement in the study, as did linking attendance with other community/cultural activities. CONCLUSIONS: The Teeth Tales intervention was promising in terms of improving oral hygiene and parent knowledge of tooth brushing technique. Adaptations to delivery of the intervention are required to increase uptake and likely impact. A future cluster randomised controlled trial would provide strongest evidence of effectiveness if appropriate to the community, cultural and economic context. This paper presents a comprehensive analytical subdomain model together with its field solutions for predicting the magnetic field distributions in surface-mounted permanent magnet (PM) machines. The tooth tips and slotting effects during open-circuit, armature reaction, and on-load conditions are considered when deriving the model and developing its solutions. The model derivations and field solutions are extended from a previous model, and can be applied to PM machines with any combinations of slot and pole numbers and any magnetization patterns in the magnets. This model is initially formulated according to Laplace's and Poisson's equations in 2-D polar coordinates by the separation of variables technique in four subdomains, such as magnet, airgap, winding slots, and slot-openings. The field solution of each subdomain is obtained applying the appropriate boundary conditions and interface conditions between every two subdomains, respectively, which can precisely account for the mutual influence between slots. Finite element analysis (FEA) is later deployed to validate the analytical results in a surface-mounted PM machine that has nonoverlapping winding arrangement. For validation purposes, PM machines having 3-slot/2-pole with parallel magnetization and 12-slot/10-pole with either parallel or radial magnetizations are used for comparisons. Computation of global quantities for the motor which include the phase back-EMF and cogging torque is also included. The results indicate that the proposed analytical model can accurately predict the magnetic field distributions in each subdomain and the motor's global quantities, which are in good agreement with those obtained from the FEA.

Phenotypic variation and individual experience can create behavioural and/or dietary variation within a population. This may reduce intra-specific competition, creating a buffer to environmental change. This study examined how intrinsic variation affects foraging behaviour of Australian fur seals. Foraging movements of 29 female Australian fur seals were recorded using FastLoc GPS and dive behaviour recorders. For each individual, body mass, flipper length and axis length were recorded, a tooth was sampled to determine age, and milk was collected for diet analysis. Clustering of fatty acid dietary analysis revealed 5 distinct groups in the population. Behaviour was described using 19 indices, which were then reduced to 7 principal components (>80% of the behavioural variation). Bayesian mixed effect models were developed to describe the relationship between these components and intrinsic variation. No association was found between diet and age or body shape; however, age had a negative relationship with component 1 (27% of variation). Older females spent less time at-sea and foraged nearer to the colony. Age had an effect on component 5 (7% of variation), which represented haul-outs and dive depth; older females made fewer visits to haul-out sites and dived deeper to the benthos. This suggests that as animals age they are able to utilise prior knowledge to exploit nearby foraging sites that younger animals are either unaware of, or have yet to gain the experience required to efficiently utilise. Mass had a negative effect on components representing the directedness of a foraging trip, suggesting heavier individuals were more likely to travel directly to a foraging site.

Stainless steel is the most widely used alloys of steel. The reputed variety of stainless steel having customised material properties as per the design requirements is Duplex Stainless Steel and Austenitic Stainless Steel. The Austenite Stainless Steel alloy has been developed further to be Super Austenitic Stainless Steel (SASS) by increasing the percentage of the alloying elements to form the half or more than the half of the material composition. SASS (Grade-AL-6XN) is an alloy steel containing high percentages of nickel (24%), molybdenum (6%) and chromium (21%). The chemical elements offer high degrees of corrosion resistance, toughness and stability in a large range of hostile environments like petroleum, marine and food processing industries. SASS is often used as a commercially viable substitute to high cost non-ferrous or non-metallic metals. The ability to machine steel effectively and efficiently is of utmost importance in the current competitive market. This paper is an attempt to evaluate the machinability of SASS which has been a classified material so far with very limited research conducted on it. Understanding the machinability of this alloy would assist in the effective forming of this material by metal cutting. The novelty of research associated with this is paper is reasonable taking into consideration the unknowns involved in machining SASS. The experimental design consists of conducting eight milling trials at combination of two different feed rates, 0.1 and 0.15 mm/tooth; cutting speeds, 100 and 150 m/min; Depth of Cut (DoC), 2 and 3 mm and coolant on for all the trials. The cutting tool has two inserts and therefore has two cutting edges. The trial sample is mounted on a dynamometer (type 9257B) to measure the cutting forces during the trials. The cutting force data obtained is later analyzed using DynaWare supplied by Kistler. The machined sample is subjected to surface roughness (Ra) measurement using a 3D optical surface profilometer (Alicona Infinite Focus). A comprehensive metallography process consisting of mounting, polishing and etching was conducted on a before and after machined sample in order to make a comparative analysis of the microstructural changes due to machining. The microstructural images were capture using a digital microscope. The microhardness test were conducted on a Vickers scale (Hv) using a Vickers microhardness tester. Initial bulk hardness testing conducted on the material show that the alloy is having a hardness of 83.4 HRb. This study expects an increase in hardness mostly due to work hardening may be due to phase transformation. The results obtained from the cutting trials are analyzed in order to judge the machinability of the material. Some of the criteria used for machinability evaluation are cutting force analysis, surface texture analysis, metallographic analysis and microhardness analysis. The methodology followed in each aspect of the investigation is similar to and inspired by similar research conducted on other materials. However, the novelty of this research is the investigation of various aspects of machinability and drawing comparisons between each other while attempting to justify each result obtained to the microstructural changes observed which influence the behaviour of the alloy. Due to the limited scope of the paper, machinability criteria such as chip morphology, Metal Removal Rate (MRR) and tool wear are not included in this paper. All aspects are then compared and the optimum machining parameters are justified with a scope for future investigations

O estudo das estruturas da placas maxilo-dentárias dos rincossauros Hyperodapedon Huxley, 1859, do Triássico da Formação Santa Maria, em nova abordagem histológica e ontogênica resultou na identificação da natureza do esmalte aprismático verdadeiro, de variados elementos histológicos dentinários e osteológicos, e de um centro de ossificação periosteal primário. Também foram encontradas evidências histológicas dos mecanismos de fusionamento maxilo-dentinário e amelo-maxilar. Com estes elementos, inferimos os modelos de organogênese dental, da ontogênese maxilar e dos mecanismos de fusionamento maxilodental. Encontrou-se uma singular e raríssima coroa dental, imatura e ainda não erupcionada, na região posterior da placa dental e assim evidenciou-se a correta posição da margem odontogenicamente ativa. Adicionalmente inferiu-se a localização da posição da lâmina dentária embrionária. Constatou-se a não formação de alvéolos dentários, de cemento radicular e do espaço necessário à formação do ligamento periodontal e, assim, se deduziu a não formação do folículo dental embriônico. As presenças de especiais elementos anatômicos e histológicos nos tecidos ósseos periapicais evidenciam o crescimento radicular contínuo, enquanto a forma e o fusionamento radicular imediato depõe a favor de uma função dentária fisiológica diferenciada para as baterias dentárias maxilares dos Rincossauros do gênero Hyperodapedon. Os mecanismos que possibilitaram o controle embriônico para a deposição das lamelas de tecido ósseo coronal e seu preciso fusionamento sobre o esmalte dentário, declinam por modificações nas funções tardias do órgão reduzido do esmalte e pela presença de uma membrana oral com funções osteogênicas e também protetivas, situada nas porções posteriores da placa maxilo-dentária em desenvolvimento. Mudanças heterocrônicas no tempo de diferenciação das células da crista neural embriônica e em seus derivados, como a lâmina dentária e órgãos dentários embrionários ou correlacionadas com a organogênese das placas maxilo-dentárias e seus anexos periodontais, todos como condições plesiomórficas para Diápsidas Triássicos, poderiam ser as causas responsáveis pela origem e evolução deste estranho aparelho estomatognático nos clados de Hyperodapedon sp..

Objetivo: o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar as condições de saúde bucal e a ocorrência de anomalias dentárias em crianças tratadas para leucemia linfoblástica aguda (LLA) no Serviço de Oncologia Pediátrica (SOP) do Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (HCPA), comparadas com um grupo crianças saudáveis. Amostra: foram selecionadas 56 crianças com diagnóstico de LLA e analisadas as presenças de anomalias dentárias e os índices CPO-D (cariado, perdido, obturado-dente), IPV (índice de placa visível), ISG (índice de sangramento gengival) e fluxo salivar. As crianças tratadas apresentaram uma média de idade, na época do diagnóstico da LLA, de 5,3 ± 2,6, e 11,8 ± 4,2 na avaliação, sendo 32 masculinos e 24 femininos. Os pacientes tratados para LLA foram divididos em três grupos: crianças tratadas somente com quimioterapia, com quimio e radioterapia, e com quimio, radio e transplante de medula óssea. Resultados: os resultados revelaram 80,4% de anomalias dentárias nas crianças tratadas, ou seja, 45 destas apresentaram pelo menos uma alteração, e o grupo de pacientes tratados com quimio, radio e submetidos ao transplante de medula óssea foi o que revelou a maior média de anormalidades dentárias por indivíduo (15,37 ± 15,03), não ocorrendo diferença estatística entre os gêneros. As crianças tratadas para LLA obtiveram CPO-D de 1,9 ± 4,0, ISG de 26,5%, IPV de 72,0%, e índice de fluxo salivar médio de 0,19 mL/min criança. Já o grupo de crianças sadias apresentou CPO-D de 1,52 ± 3,5, ISG de 11,1%, IPV de 53,8% e índice de fluxo salivar médio de 0,27 mL/min. Conclusão: o tratamento para a cura da LLA provoca um aumento significativo no número de anomalias dentárias, sendo mais freqüente nos pacientes menores de cinco anos de idade, principalmente nos pacientes submetidos a quimio e radioterapia associadas ao transplante de medula óssea, o que requer, por parte do cirurgião-dentista, intervenções clínicas diferenciadas e cuidadosas nestes pacientes, tendo-se em vista também os índices aumentados de ISG e IPV. As alterações sofridas pelas glândulas salivares durante o tratamento não são permanentes sob o aspecto do fluxo salivar, que retorna à normalidade. A orientação e o acompanhamento adequados destes pacientes por parte da equipe de saúde bucal podem mantê-los com o índice de CPO-D dentro dos padrões preconizados pela Organização Mundial de Saúde.
