The accumulation of solid material in reservoirs, river channels and sea areas causes the mechanical extraction of these materials by suction is becoming much more common, so it is important to study the performance of the suction of these materials analyzing the shape of the nozzles and flow parameters, including the pump. This thesis studies, using experimental equipment, the effectiveness of different solids removal devices (using nozzles of different shapes and variable speed pumps). The experimental device was developed at the Hydraulics Laboratory of the Civil University of the Polytechnic University of Madrid. The device included a submerged bed with different types of sediment solids, different removal nozzles and variable speed pump. It also includes a water separation element and the solids extracted. The key parameters analyzed are the total liquid volume pumped, the solid volume extracted, diameter of the suction pipe, a section of the nozzle and hood, and the parameters of speed and efficiency of the variable speed pump. The basic parameters analyzed are the total liquid volume pumped, the removed solid volume, the diameter of the suction pipe, the shape and cross-section of the nozzle, and the parameters of speed, efficiency and energy consumed by the variable speed pump. The measurements obtained on the experimental device have been studied with dimensional analysis and statistical methods. The outcome of this study is a new formulation, which relates the solid volume extracted with the pipe and nozzle diameters, the pumped liquid flow and the speed of the pump. Also, from a practical point of view, the influence of the shape of the nozzle was compared with the solid extraction capacity, keeping equal the rest of the parameters. So, a recommendation of the best shape of the nozzle can be given.

The tropical montane forests of the E Andean cordillera in Ecuador receive episodic Sahara- dust inputs particularly increasing Ca deposition. We added CaCl2 to isolate the effect of Ca deposition by Sahara dust to tropical montane forest from the simultaneously occurring pH effect. We examined components of the Ca cycle at four control plots and four plots with added Ca (2 × 5 kg ha?1 Ca annually as CaCl2) in a random arrangement. Between August 2007 and December 2009 (four applications of Ca), we determined Ca concentrations and fluxes in litter leachate, mineral soil solution (0.15 and 0.30 m depths), throughfall, and fine litterfall and Al con- centrations and speciation in soil solutions. After 1 y of Ca addition, we assessed fine-root bio- mass, leaf area, and tree growth. Only < 3% of the applied Ca leached below the acid organic layer (pH 3.5?4.8). The added CaCl2 did not change electrical conductivity in the root zone after 2 y. In the second year of fertilization, Ca retention in the canopy of the Ca treatment tended to decrease relative to the control. After 2 y, 21% of the applied Ca was recycled to soil with throughfall and litterfall. One year after the first Ca addition, fine-root biomass had decreased significantly. Decreasing fine-root biomass might be attributed to a direct or an indirect beneficial effect of Ca on the soil decomposer community. Because of almost complete association of Al with dissolved organic matter and high free Ca2+ : Al3+ activity ratios in solution of all plots, Al toxicity was unlikely. We conclude that the added Ca was retained in the system and had benefi- cial effects on some plants.

The sodium/iodide symporter (NIS) stimulates iodide uptake in normal lactating breast, but is not known to be active in nonlactating breast or breast cancer. We studied NIS gene regulation and iodide uptake in MCF-7 cells, an estrogen receptor (ER)-positive human breast cancer cell line. All-trans retinoic acid (tRA) treatment stimulated iodide uptake in a time- and dose-dependent fashion up to ≈9.4-fold above baseline. Stimulation with selective retinoid compounds indicated that the induction of iodide uptake was mediated by retinoic acid receptor. Treatment with tRA markedly stimulated NIS mRNA and immunoreactive protein (≈68 kDa). tRA stimulated NIS gene transcription ≈4-fold, as shown by nuclear run-on assay. No induction of iodide uptake was observed with RA treatment of an ER-negative human breast cancer cell line, MDA-MB 231, or a normal human breast cell line, MCF-12A. The iodide efflux rate of tRA-treated MCF-7 cells was slow (t1/2 = 24 min), compared with that in FRTL-5 thyroid cells (t1/2 = 3.9 min), favoring iodide retention in MCF-7 cells. An in vitro clonogenic assay demonstrated selective cytotoxicity with 131I after tRA stimulation of MCF-7 cells. tRA up-regulates NIS gene expression and iodide uptake in an ER-positive breast cancer cell line. Stimulation of radioiodide uptake after systemic retinoid treatment may be useful for diagnosis and treatment of some differentiated breast cancers.

Ligand-activated epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFRs) associate with coated pit adaptor proteins (AP2) in vivo, implying a mechanism for receptor retention in coated pits during internalization. Using an in vitro binding assay, we localized the adaptor binding determinant to residues 970-991 of EGFRs and confirmed specificity by competition with a synthetic peptide corresponding to this sequence. A mutant EGFR lacking this AP2 binding determinant did not associate with AP2 in vivo but demonstrated internalization and down-regulation kinetics indistinguishable from its wild-type counterpart. Immunocytochemistry confirmed ligand-induced internalization of the mutant EGFR. These data suggest that endocytic determinants are distinct from AP2 binding determinants and that processes other than association with AP2 regulate endocytosis of EGFRs.

This work focuses on a Messinian shallow-marine terrigenous unit, termed the La Virgen Formation, which forms part of the sedimentary infill of the Bajo Segura Basin (Betic margin of the western Mediterranean). This formation was deposited during a high sea level phase prior to the onset of the Messinian Salinity Crisis. Stratigraphically, it comprises a prograding stack of sandstone lithosomes alternating with marly intervals (1st-order cyclicity). These lithosomes are characterized by a homoclinal geometry that tapers distally, and interfinger with pelagic sediments rich in planktonic and benthic microfauna (Torremendo Formation). An analysis of sedimentary facies of each lithosome reveals a repetitive succession of sandy storm beds (tempestites), occasionally amalgamated, which are separated by thin marly layers (2nd-order cyclicity). Each storm bed contains internal erosional surfaces (3rd-order cyclicity) that delimit sets of laminae. Two categories of storm beds have been differentiated. The first one includes layers formed below storm wave base (SWB), characterized by traction structures associated to unidirectional flows (scoured base, planar lamination, and parting lineation). The second category consists of layers deposited above the SWB which display typical high regime oscillatory flow structures (swaley and hummocky cross lamination). In both cases, the ichnological record is characterized by an oligotypic association of Ophiomorpha nodosa, which can be interpreted as the result of allochthonous tracemakers (crustaceans) transported during storm events together with the sediment. The benthic microfauna in the marly intervals that separate the sandstone lithosomes (1st-order cyclicity) indicates that the storm ebb surges were deposited at depths ranging from those of inner shelf settings (with Elphidium spp. and Cibicides lobatulus) to those of outer shelf (with Valvulineria complanata and Uvigerina cylindrica). At the distal end of the sandstone lithosomes, the planktonic microfauna is characterized by a high content of taxa indicative of warm-oligotrophic waters (Globigerinoides obliquus and Globigerinoides bulloideus). In contrast, in the marly intervals, the microfauna is dominated by species typical of cold-eutrophic waters (Globigerina and Neogloboquadrina). This alternation of planktic foraminiferal assemblages is interpreted as being the expression of climatic cycles, in which every episode of progradation of tempestite-dominated lithosomes corresponds to maximum insolation and warm waters, whereas episodes of marly deposition correspond to minimal insolation and cold waters. The 1st-order cyclicity recorded in the La Virgen Formation, in a context of terrigenous storm-dominated shelf, corresponds to sapropel/homogeneous marl cycles formed in a pelagic basin (Torremendo Fm). These cycles in pelagic sediments are commonplace throughout the Mediterranean during the Messinian and reflect precession orbital changes: repeated periods of maximum insolation – minimum precession (sapropels) and minimal insolation – maximum precession (homogeneous marls). The fact that the example of terrigenous unit studied herein is coetaneous with the well-developed reef complexes in the Mediterranean basins points out the importance of sediment supply in the formation of large-scale sandy lithosomes. This is a crucial aspect to understanding reservoir genesis as well as lateral stratigraphic relationships with potential seal and/or source rocks.

A sediment core obtained from the northeastern Philippine Sea Basin was analyzed for 232Th, 230Th, 226Ra and 210Pb. Three sheets of Ferro-manganese oxide in a matrix of red clay were included in the 73 m core. Although the concentration of 232Th of land origin is normal as compared with that of the usual red clay or of the sediment obtained at the neighboring station, the concentration of radiogenic 230Th is extremely low and does not decrease with increasing depth. The radioactivity of rather soluble 226Ra at the station is not less than that of 230Th in the surface sediment, showing a tendency different from that observed in usual cores. Some enrichment in the comparatively short-lived 210Pb activity relative to 226Ra activity was found in the top sediment and in the first ferro-manganese sheet at the station. If the excess 210Pb in the ferro-manganese sheet is not due to contamination of the surface sediment, lead should migrate through the sheet. These facts suggest that the core has not been accumulating during the past few hundred thousand years or more.

Volumes of Holocene (10 000 years) terrigenous sediments and annnal sediment supply in the Laptev Sea were evaluated from average thickness of the Holocene veneer. Volumes of deposits supplied from various sediment sourees and by different proeesses (abrasion of hinterland and island shores, river discharge, eolian input, drifting ice) were diseriminating of deposition in the eoastal zone, at river/sea barrier, and in the shelf basin itself. Accumulation by drifting iee and the role of local sea bottom erosion were also considered. Total amount of sediments transported from the Laptev Sea shelf to Amundsen and Nansen Basins of the Aretie Ocean was compared with other Russian Aretie seas.

Limited availability of P in soils to crops may be due to deficiency and/or severe P retention. Earlier studies that drew on large soil profile databases have indicated that it is not (yet) feasible to present meaningful values for "plant-available" soil P, obtained according to comparable analytical methods, that may be linked to soil geographical databases derived from 1:5 million scale FAO Digital Soil Map of the World, such as the 5 x 5 arc-minute version of the ISRIC-WISE database. Therefore, an alternative solution for studying possible crop responses to fertilizer-P applied to soils, at a broad scale, was sought. The approach described in this report considers the inherent capacity of soils to retain phosphorus (P retention), in various forms. Main controlling factors of P retention processes, at the broad scale under consideration, are considered to be pH, soil mineralogy, and clay content. First, derived values for these properties were used to rate the inferred capacity for P retention of the component soil units of each map unit (or grid cell) using four classes (i.e., Low, Moderate, High, and Very High). Subsequently, the overall soil phosphorus retention potential was assessed for each mapping unit, taking into account the P-ratings and relative proportion of each component soil unit. Each P retention class has been assigned to a likely fertilizer P recovery fraction, derived from the literature, thereby permitting spatially more detailed, integrated model-based studies of environmental sustainability and agricultural production at the global and continental level (< 1:5 million). Nonetheless, uncertainties remain high; the present analysis provides an approximation of world soil phosphorus retention potential.

During the ARCTIC '91-Expedition with RV 'Polarstern', several Multicorer and Kastenlot-cores were recovered along a profile crossing the eastern part of the Arctic Ocean. The investigated cores consist mainly of clayey-silty sediments, and some units with a higher sand content. In this thesis, detailed sedimentological and organic-geochemical investigations were performed. In part, the near surface sediments were AMS-14C dated making it possible to Interpret the results of the organic-geochemical investigations in terms of climatic changes (isotopic stage 2 to the Holocene). The more or less absence of foraminifers within the long cores prevented the development of an oxygen isotope stratigraphy. Only the results of core PS2174-5 from the Amundsen-Basin could be discussed in terms of the climatic change that could be dated back to oxygen isotope stage 7. Detailed organic-geochemical investigations in the central Arctic Ocean are rare. Therefore, several different organic-geochemical methods were used to obtain a wide range of data for the Interpretation of the organic matter. The high organic carbon content of the surface sediments is derived from a high input of terrigenous organic matter. The terrigenous organic material is most likely entrained within the sea-ice On the Siberian shelves and released during ice-drift over the Arctic Ocean. Other factors such as iceberg-transport and turbidites are also responsible for the high input of terrigenous organic matter. Due to the more or less closed sea-ice Cover, the Arctic Ocean is known as a low productivity system. A model shows, that only 2 % of the organic matter in central Arctic Ocean sediments is of a marine origin. The influence of the West-Spitsbergen current increases the marine organic matter content to 16 %. Short chain n-alkanes (C17 and C19) can be used as a marker of marine productivity in the Arctic Ocean. Higher contents of short chain n-alkanes exist in surface sediments of the Lomonosov-Ridge and the Makarov-Basin, indicating a higher marine productivity caused by a reduced sea-ice Cover. The Beaufort-Gyre and Transpolar-Drift drift Patterns could be responsible for the lower sea-ice distribution in this region. The sediments of Stage 2 and Stage 3 in this region are also dominated by a higher content of short chain-nalkanes indicating a comparable ice-drift Pattern during that time. The content and composition of organic carbon in the sediments of core PS2174-5 reflect glaciallinterglacial changes. Interglacial stages 7 and 5e show a low organic carbon content (C 0,5 %) and, as indicated by high hydrogen-indices, low CIN-ratios, higher content of n-alkanes (C17 and C19) and a higher opal content, a higher marine productivity. In the Holocene, a high content of foraminifers, coccoliths, ostracodes, and sponge spicules indicate higher surface-water productivity. Nevertheless, the low hydrogenindices reveal a high content of terrigenous organic matter. Therefore, the Holocene seems to be different from interglacials 7 and 5e. During the glacial periods (stages 6, upper 5, and 4), TOC-values are significantly higher (0.7 to 1.3 %). In addition, low hydrogen-indices, high CIN-ratios, low short chain n-alkanes and opal contents provide evidence for a higher input of terrigenous organic matter and reduced marine productivity. The high lignin content in core sections with high TOC-contents, substantiates the high input of terrigenous organic matter. Changes in the content and composition of the organic carbon is believed to vary with the fluctuations in sea-level and sea-ice coverage.

We measured the concentrations of redox-sensitive trace metals (Mn, V, Mo, U, Cd and Re) in sediments from ODP Leg 169S Hole 1033B in Saanich Inlet, British Columbia, to determine changes in redox conditions associated with the onset of laminated sediments at ~12.5 kyr. The most striking result is a large peak in authigenic Re along with detrital levels of Mo at the glacial terrigenous clay-diatomaceous sediment transition. In contrast, the underlying glacial terrigenous clay, which extends throughout the bottom section of the core, is chemically similar to detrital concentrations, either Cowichan River particulates or average shale values. These data suggest a period of oxic bottom waters but reducing pore-waters. This could be due to the dramatic transformation of Saanich Inlet during the late deglaciation from an open bay to an inlet, which restricted circulation and slowed bottom water oxygen renewal. A peak and gradual increase in authigenic Mn in younger sediments subsequent to the Re peak suggests that increasingly oxic conditions followed the authigenic enrichment in Re. These conditions could be connected to the Younger Dryas cooling period, which was coincident with an increase in well oxygenated upwelled waters on the west coast of North America that form the bottom waters of Saanich Inlet. Metal concentrations in a gray clay bed (~11 kyr) are similar to their concentrations in the glacial terrigenous clay, implying that they have a common source. Authigenic enrichments of Re with little authigenic Mo and Cd suggest that before the deposition of this bed, bottom waters were oxic and pore-water oxygen was consumed in the top centimeter or less. Laminations above the clay layer suggest anoxic conditions, which are also indicated by higher authigenic Mo and Cd and slightly lower Re/Mo ratios in these sediments. The basin remained mostly anoxic after the gray clay was emplaced, as seen by continuous authigenic enrichment of the redox-sensitive trace metals. These results are consistent with increased stratification of the water column, brought about by an influx of fresh water to the basin by a large flood.

In this paper, we summarize data on terrigenous sediment supply in the Kara Sea and its accumulation and spatial and temporal variability during Holocene times. Sedimentological, organic-geochemical, and micropaleontological proxies determined in surface sediments allow to characterize the modern (riverine) terrigenous sediment input. AMS-14C dated sediment cores from the Ob and Yenisei estuaries and the adjacent inner Kara Sea were investigated to determine the terrigenous sediment fluxes and their relationship to paleoenvironmental changes. The variability of sediment fluxes during Holocene times is related to the post-glacial sea-level rise and changes in river discharge and coastal erosion input. Whereas during the late/middle Holocene most of the terrigenous sediments were deposited in the estuaries and the areas directly off the estuaries, huge amounts of sediments accumulated on the Kara Sea shelf farther north during the early Holocene before about 9 cal kyr BP. The maximum accumulation at that time is related to the lowered sea level, increased coastal erosion, and increased river discharge. Based on sediment thickness charts, echograph profiles and sediment core data, we estimate an average Holocene (0-11 cal kyr BP) annual accumulation of 194,106 t/yr of total sediment for the whole Kara Sea. Based on late Holocene (modern) sediment accumulation in the estuaries, probably 12,106 t/yr of riverine suspended matter (i.e. about 30% of the input) may escape the marginal filter on a geological time scale and is transported onto the open Kara Sea shelf. The high-resolution magnetic susceptibility record of a Yenisei core suggests a short-term variability in Siberian climate and river discharge on a frequency of 300-700 yr. This variability may reflect natural cyclic climate variations to be seen in context with the interannual and interdecadal environmental changes recorded in the High Northern Latitudes over the last decades, such as the NAO/AO pattern. A major decrease in MS values starting near 2.5 cal kyr BP, being more pronounced during the last about 2 cal kyr BP, correlates with a cooling trend over Greenland as indicated in the GISP-2 Ice Core, extended sea-ice cover in the North Atlantic, and advances of glaciers in western Norway. Our still preliminary interpretation of the MS variability has to be proven by further MS records from additional cores as well as other high-resolution multi-proxy Arctic climate records.
