A record broadly tunable high-power external cavity InAs/GaAs quantum-dot diode laser with a tuning range of 202 nm (1122 nm-1324 nm) is demonstrated. A maximum output power of 480 mW and a side-mode suppression ratio greater than 45 dB are achieved in the central part of the tuning range. We exploit a number of strategies for enhancing the tuning range of external cavity quantum-dot lasers. Different waveguide designs, laser configurations and operation conditions (pump current and temperature) are investigated for optimization of output power and tunability. Generation of stable dual and/or multiple longitudinal modes emitted from a single quantum dot (QD) laser diode (LD) over a broad wavelength range by using volume Bragg gratings (VBG's) in an external cavity setup is reported. The LD operates in both the ground and excited states and the gratings give a dual-mode separation around each emission peak of 5 nm, which is suitable as a continuous wave (CW) optical pump signal for a terahertz (THz) photomixer device. The setup also generates dual modes around both 1180m and 1260 nm simultaneously, giving four simultaneous narrow linewidth modes comprising two simultaneous difference frequency pump signals. Progress in making pH-responsive polyelectrolyte brushes with a range of different grafting densities is reported. Polymer brushes of poly(2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) were synthesised via atom transfer radical polymerisation on silicon wafers using a 'grafted from' approach. The [11-(2-bromo-2-methyl) propionyloxy]undecyl trichlorosilane initiator was covalently attached to the silicon via silylation, from which the brushes were grown using a catalytic system of copper(I) chloride and pentamethyldiethylenetriamine in tetrahydrofuran at 80°C. X-ray reflectivity was used to assess the initiator surfaces and an upper limit on the grafting density of the polymer was determined. The quality of the brushes produced was analysed using ellipsometry and atomic force microscopy, which is also discussed.

The spectral narrowing and selective tuning of picosecond pulse outputs from gain-switched diode laser and a four Bragg-grating fiber, were investigated. The fiber used under investigation was designed to provide spectral narrowing and multiple wavelength/temporal output. The maximum transmission out of each of the four output fibers was ∼7.5 mW, for a current of 180 mA. The results show that an output of any combination of multiple wavelengths is only produced at modulation frequencies which satisfy resonant conditions for all cavity arms simultaneously.

We present a newly designed polymer light-emitting diode with a bandwidth of ∼350 kHz for high-speed visible light communications. Using this new polymer light-emitting diode as a transmitter, we have achieved a record transmission speed of 10 Mb/s for a polymer light-emitting diode-based optical communication system with an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing technique, matching the performance of single carrier formats using multitap equalization. For achieving such a high data-rate, a power pre-emphasis technique was adopted. © 2014 Optical Society of America.

Self-seeded, gain-switched operation of an InGaN multi-quantum-well diode laser is reported for the first time. Narrow-line, wavelength-tunable, picosecond pulses have been generated from a standard, uncoated diode laser in an external cavity.

A novel single-step technique for the apodization of planar waveguide Bragg gratings based on the polarization control method is proposed. First results are presented, showing successful side-lobe suppression in the reflection spectrum of the gratings.

A compact high-power yellow-green continuous wave (CW) laser source based on second-harmonic generation (SHG) in a 5% MgO doped periodically poled congruent lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide crystal pumped by a quantum-dot fiber Bragg grating (QD-FBG) laser diode is demonstrated. A frequency-doubled power of 90.11 mW at the wavelength of 560.68 nm with a conversion efficiency of 52.4% is reported. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the highest output power and conversion efficiency achieved to date in this spectral region from a diode-pumped PPLN waveguide crystal, which could prove extremely valuable for the deployment of such a source in a wide range of biomedical applications.

In this paper we experimentally demonstrate a 10 Mb/s error free visible light communications (VLC) system using polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) for the first time. The PLED under test is a blue emitter with ∼600 kHz bandwidth. Having such a low bandwidth means the introduction of an intersymbol interference (ISI) induced penalty at higher transmission speeds and thus the requirement for an equalizer. In this work we improve on previous literature by implementing a decision feedback equalizer, rather than a linear equalizer. Considering 7% and 20% forward error correction codes, transmission speeds up to ∼12 Mb/s can be supported.

We have generated near-transform-limited picosecond pulses(ΔτΔν≈0.45) from a gain-switched diode laser using periodic and chirped fiber Bragg gratings. This configuration reduced the spectral bandwidth from 11 to 0.08 nm and the pulse duration was reduced, from 30 to<18 ps. Average and peak powers of 27 and 770 mW, respectively, were obtained.

We present a compact, all-room-temperature continuous-wave laser source in the visible spectral region between 574 and 647 nm by frequency doubling of a broadly tunable InAs/GaAs quantum-dot external-cavity diode laser in a periodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate crystal containing three waveguides with different cross-sectional areas (4 × 4, 3 × 5, and 2 μm × 6 μm). The influence of a waveguide's design on tunability, output power, and mode distribution of second-harmonic generated light, as well as possibilities to increase the conversion efficiency via an optimization of a waveguide's cross-sectional area, was systematically investigated. A maximum output power of 12.04 mW with a conversion efficiency of 10.29% at 605.6 nm was demonstrated in the wider waveguide with the cross-sectional area of 4 μm × 4 μm.

An iterative method for the parabolic Cauchy problem in planar domains having a finite number of corners is implemented based on boundary integral equations. At each iteration, mixed well-posed problems are solved for the same parabolic operator. The presence of corner points renders singularities of the solutions to these mixed problems, and this is handled with the use of weight functions together with, in the numerical implementation, mesh grading near the corners. The mixed problems are reformulated in terms of boundary integrals obtained via discretization of the time-derivative to obtain an elliptic system of partial differential equations. To numerically solve these integral equations a Nyström method with super-algebraic convergence order is employed. Numerical results are presented showing the feasibility of the proposed approach. © 2014 IMACS.

Many applications of high-power laser diodes demand tight focusing. This is often not possible due to the multimode nature of semiconductor laser radiation possessing beam propagation parameter M2 values in double-digits. We propose a method of 'interference' superfocusing of high-M2 diode laser beams with a technique developed for the generation of Bessel beams based on the employment of an axicon fabricated on the tip of a 100 μm diameter optical fiber with highprecision direct laser writing. Using axicons with apex angle 140º and rounded tip area as small as 10 μm diameter, we demonstrate 2-4 μm diameter focused laser 'needle' beams with approximately 20 μm propagation length generated from multimode diode laser with beam propagation parameter M2=18 and emission wavelength of 960 nm. This is a few-fold reduction compared to the minimal focal spot size of 11 μm that could be achieved if focused by an 'ideal' lens of unity numerical aperture. The same technique using a 160º axicon allowed us to demonstrate few-μm-wide laser 'needle' beams with nearly 100 μm propagation length with which to demonstrate optical trapping of 5-6 μm rat blood red cells in a water-heparin solution. Our results indicate the good potential of superfocused diode laser beams for applications relating to optical trapping and manipulation of microscopic objects including living biological objects with aspirations towards subsequent novel lab-on-chip configurations.
