Single-step low-temperature solution combustion (LCS) synthesis was adopted for the preparation of LaMnO3+ (LM) nanopowders. The powders were well characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS),surface area and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The PXRD of as-formed LM showed a cubic phase but, upon calcination (900degrees C, 6 h), it transformed into a rhombohedral phase. The effect of fuel on the formation of LM was examined, and its structure and magnetoresistance properties were investigated. Magnetoresistance (MR) measurements on LM were carried out at 0, 1, 4 and 7 T between 300 and 10 K. LM (fuel-to-oxidizer ratio; = 1) showed an MR of 17% at 1 T, whereas, for 4 and 7 T, it exhibited an MR of 45 and 55%, respectively, near the TM-I. Metallic resistivity data below TM-I showed that the double exchange interaction played a major role in this compound. It was interesting to observe that the sample calcined at 1200 degrees C for 3 h exhibited insulator behavior.

Nanoplate LiFePO4 is synthesized by a polyol route starting from only two reactants, namely, FePO4 and LiOH. The crystalline compound forms by refluxing a tetraethylene glycol solution consisting of FePO4 and LiOH at 335 degrees C without further heating of the reaction product. The nanoplates have average dimensions of 30 nm width and 160 nm length, as measured from transmission electron microscopy micrographs. The surface area of the LiFePO4 sample is 38 m(2) g(-1). Also, the sample is porous with a broadly distributed pore around 50 nm. The electrodes fabricated out of the nanoplate of LiFePO4 exhibit a high electrochemical activity. Discharge capacity values measured are 160 and 100 mAh g(-1) at 0.15C and 3.45C, respectively. A stable capacity of about 155 mAh g(-1) is measured at 0.2C over a 50 charge-discharge cycle. In this work diketopyrrolopyrrole based copolymers (PDPP-BBT and TDPP-BBT) containing a donor-acceptor structural unit have been explored as organic Sensitizers for quasi-solid state dye Sensitized solar cells. Polymer-sensitized solar cells (PSSC) fabricated utilizing PDPP-BBT and TDPP-BBT as the active layer resulted in a typical power conversion efficiency of 1.43% and 2.41%, respectively. The power conversion efficiency of PSSCs based on TDPP-BBT With use of TiCl4-modified TiO2 photoanode was about 3.06%, attributed to the reduced back recombination reaction and more charge carriers in the external Circuit.

Presented here is the two-phase thermodynamic (2PT) model for the calculation of energy and entropy of molecular fluids from the trajectory of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. In this method, the density of state (DoS) functions (including the normal modes of translation, rotation, and intramolecular vibration motions) are determined from the Fourier transform of the corresponding velocity autocorrelation functions. A fluidicity parameter (f), extracted from the thermodynamic state of the system derived from the same MD, is used to partition the translation and rotation modes into a diffusive, gas-like component (with 3Nf degrees of freedom) and a nondiffusive, solid-like component. The thermodynamic properties, including the absolute value of entropy, are then obtained by applying quantum statistics to the solid component and applying hard sphere/rigid rotor thermodynamics to the gas component. The 2PT method produces exact thermodynamic properties of the system in two limiting states: the nondiffusive solid state (where the fluidicity is zero) and the ideal gas state (where the fluidicity becomes unity). We examine the 2PT entropy for various water models (F3C, SPC, SPC/E, TIP3P, and TIP4P-Ew) at ambient conditions and find good agreement with literature results obtained based on other simulation techniques. We also validate the entropy of water in the liquid and vapor phases along the vapor-liquid equilibrium curve from the triple point to the critical point. We show that this method produces converged liquid phase entropy in tens of picoseconds, making it an efficient means for extracting thermodynamic properties from MD simulations.

The force constants of H2 and Li2 are evaluated employing their extended Hartree-Fock wavefunctions by a polynomial fit of their force curves. It is suggested that, based on incomplete multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock wavefunctions, force constants calculated from the energy derivatives are numerically more accurate than those obtained from the derivatives of the Hellmann-Feynman forces. It is observed that electrons relax during the nuclear vibrations in such a fashion as to facilitate the nuclear motions.

The electronic absorption peak at around 2 eV of polyaniline (in the emeraldine base form) solution is found to be highly sensitive to the dielectric constant of the solvent, showing a bathochromic shift. An increase in electron density on the imine nitrogen of the polymer, on ‘2 eV’ excitation, has been concluded.

Mononuclear, binuclear and trinuclear silver(l) complexes were obtained unexpectedly while probing the reactivity of diphosphazane ligands of the type X2PN(Pr-i)PXY towards the ruthenium-based precursor Ru(bipy)(2)Cl-2 center dot 2H(2)O, in the presence of a silver salt as a chloride scavenger. Subsequently, the reactions of AgX [X = Cl, NO3 or CF3SO3] with Ph2PN(R)PPh(Y) [R = H, Y = Ph; R = Pr-i, Y = Ph or OC6H3Me2-2,6] in a 1: 1 or 1:2 molar ratio have been investigated. Mononuclear or binuclear Ag(I) complexes containing either chelating or bridging diphosphazane ligands are obtained. Trinuclear silver(l) complexes are accessible by the treatment of diphosphazane ligands, Ph2PN(R)PPh2 [R = H, Pr-i] with AgCl using piperidine as the solvent. In the presence of a suitable chloride donor species, the mononuclear and binuclear complexes of Ph2PN(Pr-i)PPh2 are transformed slowly to the trinuclear complex [Ag-3(mu-Cl)(2){Ph2PN(Pr-i)PPh2}(3)]X, over a period 20 h. The structures of representative complexes have been confirmed by X-ray crystallography and the salient structural features are discussed

We report the Cl-*(P-2(1/2)) production dynamics in the near-UV dissociation of three isomers (cis-, gem-, and trans-) of dichloroethylene using the conventional resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization technique. Substantial amounts of Cl-* are produced in the wavelength range 222-304 nm. The Cl-* quantum yield (phi(*)) i maximum at 304 nm for all the isomers and phi(*)(cis) is markedly higher than phi(*)(gem) and phi(*)(trans) except at 222 nm. Existence of both direct and indirect dissociation pathways at these wavelengths complicates the Cl* production dynamics. The higher value of phi(*)(cis) originates from a large contribution from direct dissociation via the (n, sigma(*)) state.

We demonstrate a new and simple route to fabricate highly dense arrays of hexagonally close packed inorganic nanodots using functional diblock copolymer (PS-b-P4VP) thin films. The deposition of pre-synthesized inorganic nanoparticles selectively into the P4VP domains of PS-b-P4VP thin films, followed by removal of the polymer, led to highly ordered metallic patterns identical to the order of the starting thin film. Examples of Au, Pt and Pd nanodot arrays are presented. The affinity of the different metal nanoparticles towards P4VP chains is also understood by extending this approach to PS-b-P4VP micellar thin films. The procedure used here is simple, eco-friendly, and compatible with the existing silicon-based technology. Also the method could be applied to various other block copolymer morphologies for generating 1-dimensional (1D) and 2-dimensional (2D) structures. (c) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Electrochemical oxidation of borohydride is studied on nanosized rhodium, iridium, and bimetallic rhodium-iridium catalysts supported onto Vulcan XC72R carbon. The catalysts are characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy in conjunction with cyclic voltammetry and polarization studies. The studies reveal that a 20 wt % bimetallic Rh-Ir catalyst supported onto carbon (Rh-Ir/C) is quite effective for the oxidation of borohydride. Direct borohydride fuel cell with Rh-Ir/C as the anode catalyst and Pt/C as the cathode catalyst exhibits a peak power density of 270 mW/cm(2) at a load current density of 290 mA/cm(2) as against 200 mW/cm(2) at 225 mA/cm(2) for Rh/C and 140 mW/cm(2) at 165 mA/cm(2) for Ir/C while operating at 80 degrees C. The synergistic catalytic activity for the bimetallic Rh-Ir nanoparticles toward borohydride oxidation is corroborated by density-functional theory calculations using electron-localization function. 1,3-Dipolar cycloaddition of an organic azide and an acetylenic unit, often referred to as the ``click reaction'', has become an important ligation tool both in the context of materials chemistry and biology. Thus, development of simple approaches to directly generate polymers that bear either an azide or an alkyne unit has gained considerable importance. We describe here a straightforward approach to directly prepare linear and hyperbranched polyesters that carry terminal propargyl groups. To achieve the former, we designed an AB-type monomer that carries a hydroxyl group and a propargyl ester, which upon self-condensation under standard transesterification conditions yielded a polyester that carries a single propargyl group at one of its chain-ends. Similarly, an AB(2) type monomer that carries one hydroxyl group and two propargyl ester groups, when polymerized under the same conditions yielded a hyperbranched polymer with numerous clickable'' propargyl groups at its molecular periphery. These propargyl groups can be readily clicked with different organic azides, such as benzyl azide, omega-azido heptaethyleneglycol monomethylether or 9-azidomethyl anthracene. When an anthracene chromophore is clicked, the molecular weight of the linear polyester could be readily estimated using both UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopic measurements. Furthermore, the reactive propargyl end group could also provide an opportunity to prepare block copolymers in the case of linear polyesters and to generate nanodimensional scaffolds to anchor variety of functional units, in the case of the hyperbranched polymer. Ultrafast Raman loss spectroscopy (URLS) enables one to obtain the vibrational structural information of molecular systems including fluorescent materials. URLS, a nonlinear process analog to stimulated Raman gain, involves a narrow bandwidth picosecond Raman pump pulse anda femtosecond broadband white light continuum. Under nonresonant condition, the Raman response appears as a negative (loss) signal, whereas, on resonance with the electronic transition the line shape changes from a negative to a positive through a dispersive form. The intensities observed and thus, the Franck-Condon activity (coordinate dependent), are sensitive to the wavelength of the white light corresponding to a particular Raman frequency with respect to the Raman pump pulse wavelength, i.e., there is a mode-dependent response in URLS.
