Fast-ion conduction has been observed in the iodide and bromide salts of 1-methyl-3-ethylimidazolium at ambient temperatures. The melting point of these two compounds is above 350 K and even at 273 K the ionic conductivity in the solid-state is greater than 10−3S cm−1. Cation diffusion coefficients have been measured using fringe field gradient and/or pulse field gradient 1H NMR techniques, which indicated cation diffusion coefficients of the order of 10−10 m2 s−1 in the solid-state. Remarkably, these values are up to an order of magnitude higher than the cation diffusion coefficient in the supercooled liquid at 293 K. The activation energy for diffusion in the solid-state is extremely small, as is typical of solid-state fast-ion conductors and indicates a change in transport mechanism from the melt to the crystal. The inability to detect an 127I signal together with the modelling of the conductivity using the Nernst–Einstein equation suggests that the solid-state conduction is primarily due to cation diffusion. The solid-state fast-ion conduction is most likely related to vacancy diffusion along the cation layers in the crystal. The temperature dependence of the NMR signal intensity indicates that the number of mobile species is increasing with increasing temperature with an activation energy of approximately 20–30 kJ mol−1.

The properties of a family of novel quaternary ammonium salts based on the bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide and triflate anions are reported. Binary phase diagrams for some of their mixtures and their electrochemical windows of stability are also reported. The highest conductivity observed in the pure salt systems at 25 °C was 7 × 10-4 S cm-1. An electrochemical window of stability of up to 5 V was measured on graphite electrodes. The effect of salt structure and solvent on conductivity of the salts is also discussed.

The goal of this paper is to present the experiences gained over 15 years of research into the design and development of a services-based distributed operating system. The lessons learnt over this period, we hope, will be of value to researchers involved in the design and development of operating systems that wish to harness the collective resources of ever-expanding distributed systems.

Eighteen protic ionic liquids containing different combinations of cations and anions, hydrophobicity, viscosity, and conductivity have been synthesized and their physicochemical properties determined. In one series, the diethanolammonium cations were combined with acetate, formate, hydrogen sulfate, chloride, sulfamate, and mesylate anions. In the second series, acetate and formate anions were combined with amine bases, triethylamine, diethylamine, triethanolamine, di-n-propylamine, and di-n-butylamine. The electrochemical characteristics of the eight protic ionic liquids that are liquid at room temperature (RTPILs) have been determined using cyclic, microelectrode, and rotating disk electrode voltammetries. Potential windows of the RTPILs have been compared at glassy carbon, platinum, gold, and boron-doped diamond electrodes and generally found to be the largest in the case of glassy carbon. The voltammetry of IUPAC recommended potential scale reference systems, ferrocene/ferrocenium and cobaltocenium/cobaltocene, have been evaluated and found to be ideal in the case of the less viscous RTPILs but involve adsorption in the highly viscous ones. Other properties such as diffusion coefficients, ionic conductivity, and double layer capacitance also have been measured. The influence of water on the potential windows, viscosity, and diffusion has been studied systematically by deliberate addition of water to the dried ionic liquids. The survey highlights the problems with voltammetric studies in highly viscous room temperature protic ionic liquids and also suggests the way forward with respect to their possible industrial use.

The performance of ceramic membranes with pore sizes of 0.05 and 0.10 mm in purifying limed and partially clarified sugar cane juice was investigated under different operating conditions. From various operating conditions and strategies, switching off the permeate for 5 seconds for every 5 minutes (S5sT5 m) by an automated control valve provided higher flux. From the three pH experiments conducted on the 0.05 mm membrane, the best performance was observed at a pH of 7.5. Amongst the four fouling models tested, the cake filtration model fitted the performance of both membranes with higher accuracy at a transmembrane pressure of 0.5 bar. Filtering the cane juice through the membrane reduced the turbidity by 99.7%, color by 15%, and the starch concentration by 80% as well as increased the purity by 1.4%. The effective cleaning chemical composition from experimental results showed that 1% NaOH and 3000 ppm NaOCl solution performed the best but only for the experiments that were treating limed and partially clarified juice at pH 7.5.

in situ high-temperature X-ray diffraction and thermal gravimetric- differential thermal analysis on room-temperature powder, as well as X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy on quenched powder, were applied to study crystal structure and phase transformations in Ba2Bi0.1Sc0.2Co 1.7O6-x (BBSC). Heating BBSC in air to over 800 °C produces a pure cubic phase with space group Fm3m (no. 225), and cooling down below 800 °C leads to a mixture of three noncubic phases including an unknown phase between 200 and 650 °C, a 2H hexagonal BaCoO3 with space group P63/mmc (no. 194) between 600 and 800 °C, and an intermediate phase at 800 °C. These three phases exist concurrently with the major cubic phase. The weight gain and loss between 300 and 900 °C suggest the occurrence of cobalt reduction, oxidation, and disproportion reactions with dominant reduction reaction at above 600 °C. The thermal expansion of BBSC was also examined by dilatometry. BBSC has a highly temperature-dependent thermal expansion coefficient which relates well with its structure evolution. Furthermore, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) of BBSC was probed by symmetrical cell and three-electrode configurations. The presence of hexagonal phase at 700 °C rarely affects the ORR performance of BBSC as evidenced by a slight increase of its area-specific resistance (ASR) value following 48 h of testing in this three-electrode configuration. This observation is in contrast to the commonly held point of view that noncubic phase deteriorates performance of perovskite compounds (especially in oxygen transport applications). Moreover, cathodic polarization treatment, for example, current discharge from BBSC (tested in three-electrode configuration), can be utilized to recover the original ORR performance. The cubic structure seems to be retained on the cathodic polarization - the normal cathode operating mode in fuel cells. Stable 72-h performance of BBSC in cathodic polarization mode further confirms that despite the presence of phase impurities, BBSC still demonstrates good performance between 500 and 700 °C, the desired intermediate operating temperature in solid oxide fuel cells.

Aims and objectives  For prediction of risk of cardiovascular end points using survival models the proportional hazards assumption is often not met. Thus, non-proportional hazards models are more appropriate for developing risk prediction equations in such situations. However, computer program for evaluating the prediction performance of such models has been rarely addressed. We therefore developed SAS macro programs for evaluating the discriminative ability of a non-proportional hazards Weibull model developed by Anderson (1991) and that of a proportional hazards Weibull model using the area under receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve.

Method  Two SAS macro programs for non-proportional hazards Weibull model using Proc NLIN and Proc NLP respectively and model validation using area under ROC curve (with its confidence limits) were written with SAS IML language. A similar SAS macro for proportional hazards Weibull model was also written.

Results  The computer program was applied to data on coronary heart disease incidence for a Framingham population cohort. The five risk factors considered were current smoking, age, blood pressure, cholesterol and obesity. The predictive ability of the non-proportional hazard Weibull model was slightly higher than that of its proportional hazard counterpart. An advantage of SAS Proc NLP in terms of the example provided here is that it provides significance level for the parameter estimates whereas Proc NLIN does not.

Conclusion  The program is very useful for evaluating the predictive performance of non-proportional and proportional hazards Weibull models.
