MEMS resonators have potential applications in the areas of RF-MEMS, clock oscillators, ultrasound transducers, etc. The important characteristics of a resonator are its resonant frequency and Q-factor (a measure of damping). Usually large damping in macro structures makes it difficult to excite and measure their higher modes. In contrast, MEMS resonators seem amenable to excitation in higher modes. In this paper, 28 modes of vibration of an electrothermal actuator are experimentally captured–perhaps the highest number of modes experimentally captured so far. We verify these modes with FEM simulations and report that all the measured frequencies are within 5% of theoretically predicted values.

Yttrium oxide (Y(2)O(3)) thin films were deposited by microwave electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) plasma assisted metal organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) process using indigenously developed metal organic precursors Yttrium 2,7,7-trimethyl-3,5-octanedionates, commonly known as Y(tod)(3) which were synthesized by an ultrasound method. A series of thin films were deposited by varying the oxygen flow rate from 1-9 sccm, keeping all other parameters constant. The deposited coatings were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, glancing angle X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. Thickness and roughness for the films were measured by stylus profilometry. Optical properties of the coatings were studied by the spectroscopic ellipsometry. Hardness and elastic modulus of the films were measured by nanoindentation technique. Being that microwave ECR CVD process is operating-pressure-sensitive, optimum oxygen activity is very essential for a fixed flow rate of precursor, in order to get a single phase cubic yttrium oxide in the films. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first effort that describes the use of Y(tod)(3) precursor for deposition of Y(2)O(3) films using plasma assisted CVD process.

Shock waves are one of the most competent mechanisms of energy dissipation observed in nature. We have developed a novel device to generate controlled micro-shock waves using an explosive-coated polymer tube. In this study, we harnessed these controlled micro-shock waves to develop a unique bacterial transformation method. The conditions were optimized for the maximum transformation efficiency in Escherichia coli. The maximum transformation efficiency was obtained when we used a 30 cm length polymer tube, 100 mu m thick metal foil, 200 mM CaCl(2), 1 ng/mu l plasmid DNA concentration, and 1 x 10(9) cell density. The highest transformation efficiency achieved (1 x 10(-5) transformants/cell) was at least 10 times greater than the previously reported ultrasound-mediated transformation (1 x 10(-6) transformants/cell). This method was also successfully employed for the efficient and reproducible transformation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella typhimurium. This novel method of transformation was shown to be as efficient as electroporation with the added advantage of better recovery of cells, reduced cost (40 times cheaper than a commercial electroporator), and growth phase independent transformation. Ultrasonic degradation of commercially important polymers, styrene-butadiene (SBR) rubber, acrylonitrile-butadiene (NBR) rubber, styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN), polybutadiene rubber and polystyrene were investigated. The molecular weight distributions were measured using gel permeation chromatography (GPC). A model based on continuous distribution kinetics approach was used to study the time evolution of molecular weight distribution for these polymers during degradation. The effect of solvent properties and ultrasound intensity on the degradation of SBR rubber was investigated using different pure solvents and mixed solvents of varying volatility and different ultrasonic intensities. The effect of ultrasound on the thermal decomposition behaviour of ammonium perchlorate (AP) has been investigated. It was observed that significant changes in the thermal behaviour of A-P, followed using differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetry, was observed when AP was subjected to power ultrasound in water saturated with oxygen-nitrogen mixture. The decomposition temperature of AP was found to have been lowered by nearly 25degreesC. A similar thermal sensitization was observed in AP when subjected to sonication in the presence of transition metal oxides. Kinetic parameters were calculated for AP, modified AP and catalyzed AP decomposition using non-isothermal kinetics. The activation energy for the decomposition of the sonicated AP samples were found to be lower than normal AP.

Superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) based on acrylic acid (AA), sodium acrylate (SA), and acrylamide (AM) were synthesized by inverse suspension polymerization using ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the crosslinking agent. The equilibrium swelling capacities and the rates of swelling of SAPs varied with the AM content and followed first-order kinetics. The photodegradation of SAPs in their equilibrium swollen state was carried out by monitoring their swelling capacity and the residual weight fraction. The SAPs degraded in two stages, wherein the swelling capacity increased to a maximum and then subsequently decreased. Thermogravimetric analysis of the SAPs indicated that the copolymeric superabsorbents had intermediate thermal stability between the homopolymeric superabsorbents. The activation energies of SAPs with 0, 20, and 100 mol % AM content were determined by Kissinger method and were found to be 299, 248, and 147 kJ mol-1, respectively. The ultrasonic degradation of the superabsorbents was carried out in their equilibrium swollen state, and the change in the viscosity with ultrasonication time was used to quantify the degradation. The ultrasonic degradation of AA/SA superabsorbent was also investigated at various ultrasound intensities. The degradation rate coefficients were found to increase with the intensity of ultrasound. The ultrasonic degradation of AA/SA/AM (20% AM) was also carried out, and degradation rate was found to be more than that of the AA/SA superabsorbent. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The present work proposes a new sensing methodology, which uses Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) to measure in vivo the surface strain and strain rate on calf muscles while performing certain exercises. Two simple exercises, namely ankle dorsi-flexion and ankle plantar-flexion, have been considered and the strain induced on the medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle while performing these exercises has been monitored. The real time strain generated has been recorded and the results are compared with those obtained using a commercial Color Doppler Ultrasound (CDU) system. It is found that the proposed sensing methodology is promising for surface strain measurements in biomechanical applications.

Novel ultrasound-sensitive nanocapsules were designed via layer-by-layer assembly (LbL) of polyelectrolytes for remote activated release of biomolecules/drug. Nanocapsules embedded with silver nanoparticles in the walls were synthesized by alternate assembly of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and dextran sulfate (DS) on silica template followed by nanoparticle synthesis and subsequent template removal thus yielding nanocapsules. The silver NPs were synthesized in situ within the capsule walls under controlled conditions. The nanocapsules were found to be well dispersed and the silver NPs were evenly distributed within the shell. FITC-dextran permeated easily into the capsules containing silver NP's due to the pores generated during the formation of NP's. When the loaded nanocapsules were sonicated, the presence of the silver NPs in the shell structure led to rupturing of the shell into smaller fragments thus releasing the FITC-dextran. Such nanocapsules have the potential to be used as drug delivery vehicles and offer the scope for further development in the areas of modern medicine, material science, and biochemistry. Tissue injury during therapeutic ultrasound or lithotripsy is thought, in cases, to be due to the action of cavitation bubbles. Assessing this and mitigating it is challenging since bubble dynamics in the complex confinement of tissues or in small blood vessels are challenging to predict. Simulations tools require specialized algorithms to simultaneously represent strong acoustic waves and shocks, topologically complex liquid‐vapor phase boundaries, and the complex viscoelastic material dynamics of tissue. We discuss advances in a simulation tool for such situations. A single‐mesh Eulerian solver is used to solve the governing equations. Special sharpening terms maintain the liquid‐vapor interface in face of the finite numerical dissipation included in the scheme to accurately capture shocks. A recent enhancement to this formulation has significantly improved this interface capturing procedure, which is demonstrated for simulation of the Rayleigh collapse of a bubble. The solver also transports elastic stresses and can thus be used to assess the effects of elastic properties on bubble dynamics. A shock‐induced bubble collapse adjacent to a model elastic tissue is used to demonstrate this and draw some conclusions regarding the injury suppressing role that tissue elasticity might play.

The assembly of aerospace and automotive structures in recent years is increasingly carried out using adhesives. Adhesive joints have advantages of uniform stress distribution and less stress concentration in the bonded region. Nevertheless, they may suffer due to the presence of defects in bond line and at the interface or due to improper curing process. While defects like voids, cracks and delaminations present in the adhesive bond line may be detected using different NDE methods, interfacial defects in the form of kissing bond may go undetected. Attempts using advanced ultrasonic methods like nonlinear ultrasound and guided wave inspection to detect kissing bond have met with limited success stressing the need for alternate methods. This paper concerns the preliminary studies carried out on detectability of dry contact kissing bonds in adhesive joints using the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique. In this attempt, adhesive joint samples containing varied area of kissing bond were prepared using the glass fiber reinforced composite (GFRP) as substrates and epoxy resin as the adhesive layer joining them. The samples were also subjected to conventional and high power ultrasonic inspection. Further, these samples were loaded till failure to determine the bond strength during which digital images were recorded and analyzed using the DIC method. This noncontact method could indicate the existence of kissing bonds at less than 50% failure load. Finite element studies carried out showed a similar trend. Results obtained from these preliminary studies are encouraging and further tests need to be done on a larger set of samples to study experimental uncertainties and scatter associated with the method. We propose a novel numerical method based on a generalized eigenvalue decomposition for solving the diffusion equation governing the correlation diffusion of photons in turbid media. Medical imaging modalities such as diffuse correlation tomography and ultrasound-modulated optical tomography have the (elliptic) diffusion equation parameterized by a time variable as the forward model. Hitherto, for the computation of the correlation function, the diffusion equation is solved repeatedly over the time parameter. We show that the use of a certain time-independent generalized eigenfunction basis results in the decoupling of the spatial and time dependence of the correlation function, thus allowing greater computational efficiency in arriving at the forward solution. Besides presenting the mathematical analysis of the generalized eigenvalue problem on the basis of spectral theory, we put forth the numerical results that compare the proposed numerical method with the standard technique for solving the diffusion equation.

Perception of operator influences ultrasound image acquisition and processing. Lower costs are attracting new users to medical ultrasound. Anticipating an increase in this trend, we conducted a study to quantify the variability in ultrasonic measurements made by novice users and identify methods to reduce it. We designed a protocol with four presets and trained four new users to scan and manually measure the head circumference of a fetal phantom with an ultrasound scanner. In the first phase, the users followed this protocol in seven distinct sessions. They then received feedback on the quality of the scans from an expert. In the second phase, two of the users repeated the entire protocol aided by visual cues provided to them during scanning. We performed off-line measurements on all the images using a fully automated algorithm capable of measuring the head circumference from fetal phantom images. The ground truth (198.1 +/- 1.6 mm) was based on sixteen scans and measurements made by an expert. Our analysis shows that: (1) the inter-observer variability of manual measurements was 5.5 mm, whereas the inter-observer variability of automated measurements was only 0.6 mm in the first phase (2) consistency of image appearance improved and mean manual measurements was 4-5 mm closer to the ground truth in the second phase (3) automated measurements were more precise, accurate and less sensitive to different presets compared to manual measurements in both phases. Our results show that visual aids and automation can bring more reproducibility to ultrasonic measurements made by new users.

Photoacoustic/thermoacoustic tomography is an emerging hybrid imaging modality combining optical/microwave imaging with ultrasound imaging. Here, a k-wave MATLAB toolbox was used to simulate various configurations of excitation pulse shape, width, transducer types, and target object sizes to see their effect on the photoacoustic/thermoacoustic signals. A numerical blood vessel phantom was also used to demonstrate the effect of various excitation pulse waveforms and pulse widths on the reconstructed images. Reconstructed images were blurred due to the broadening of the pressure waves by the excitation pulse width as well as by the limited transducer bandwidth. The blurring increases with increase in pulse width. A deconvolution approach is presented here with Tikhonov regularization to correct the photoacoustic/thermoacoustic signals, which resulted in improved reconstructed images by reducing the blurring effect. It is observed that the reconstructed images remain unaffected by change in pulse widths or pulse shapes, as well as by the limited bandwidth of the ultrasound detectors after the use of the deconvolution technique. Noninvasive or minimally invasive identification of sentinel lymph node (SLN) is essential to reduce the surgical effects of SLN biopsy. Photoacoustic (PA) imaging of SLN in animal models has shown its promise for clinical use in the future. Here, we present a Monte Carlo simulation for light transport in the SLN for various light delivery configurations with a clinical ultrasound probe. Our simulation assumes a realistic tissue layer model and also can handle the transmission/reflectance at SLN-tissue boundary due to the mismatch of refractive index. Various light incidence angles show that for deeply situated SLNs the maximum absorption of light in the SLN is for normal incidence. We also show that if a part of the diffused reflected photons is reflected back into the skin using a reflector, the absorption of light in the SLN can be increased significantly to enhance the PA signal.
