Molecular mobility in castor oil based polyurethane was investigated with thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC) measurements and alternating-current (ac) dielectric relaxation spectroscopy. Three peaks could be observed in TSDC thermograms from 173 to 373 K. The relaxation located at 213 K could be attributed to the change in the molecular chain due to the interaction between the isocyanate and the solvent, and it was well fitted with the Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann equation. The other two peaks were located at 274 and 365 K and could be attributed to interfacial polarization and space charge, respectively. (c) 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Purpose: To investigate the combined effects of reflux of duodenal contents through the pylorus and treatment with N-methyl-N'-nitro-nitrosoguanidine ( MNNG) on the development of lesions in the glandular stomach, at the gastrojejunal anastomosis and in the forestomach of rats. Methods: Eighty Male Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups: G1: MNNG + Reflux, G2: Reflux, G3: MNNG and G4: Gastrostomy. MNNG was given in the drinking water ( 100 mg/ml) for 12 weeks and then two groups ( G1 and G2) were submitted to a gastrojejunal anastomosis followed by section of the afferent loop and suture of both stumps to allow reflux of duodenal contents through the pylorus. The animals were sacrificed 18 and 36 weeks after surgery. The lesions obtained in the antral mucosa, at the gastrojejunal anastomosis and in the forestomach were analysed histologically. Results: Duodenal reflux induced proliferative lesions at both glandular and squamous mucosa of the stomach. In the antrum, adenomatous hyperplasia (AH) was observed in 20% and 50% of the animals at the 18(th) and 36(th) weeks respectively. Aditionally 85% of the animals presented AH at the gastrojejunal anastomosis and 60% developed squamous hyperplasia at the squamous portion of the stomach. MNNG treatment plus duodenal reflux enhanced the development of malignant tumors at both glandular and squamous mucosa, since there were 30% of antral adenocarcinomas and 45% of squamous carcinomas at the 18th week and the frequency of these malignant tumors rose to 50% in the antrum and 65% in the squamous mucosa at the 36th week. Conclusion: The reflux of duodenal contents through the pylorus enhanced the development of proliferative lesions, benign and malignant, in the glandular stomach and in the forestomach of rats.

The Brazilian Agency for the Environment (IBAMA) recently adopted an alternative medium-term multiple-organ assay system with the Wistar rat strain for detection of the carcinogenic potential of pesticides. Originally, this initiation-promotion protocol was established in Japan with the isogenic Fischer 344 male rat. Among the initiating agents used in that assay, N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU) rapidly induces malignant lymphoma and leukemia and early mortality of rats from different strains. This study was developed to evaluate whether the outbred Wistar rats are also similarly susceptible to MNU. Particularly, it aimed to evaluate the dose-response relationship and to register the MNUinduced pre-neoplasia and neoplasia that may develop in the lympho-hematopoietic system (LHS) of the Wistar rat within a medium-term period. Four groups of male Wistar rats were treated during 2 weeks with vehicle or with MNU (80, 160 or 240 mg/kg body weight, i.p.). After sacrifice at the 12th and 20th weeks, the thymus, spleen, bone marrow, cervical and mesenteric lymph nodes and liver were collected for analysis. At the 20th week, LHS malignant tumors and benign vascular tumors occurred only in the high- and intermediate-dose MNU-treated animals. Four animals treated with 240 mg/kg developed diffuse thymic lymphomas; two others, treated respectively with 240 mg/kg and 160 mg/kg, developed spleen hemangiomas. The present observations indicate that the Wistar strain is as susceptible as other strains to the early development of MNU-induced LHS (pre)neoplasia. Therefore, this strain seems suitable to be used as test system in bioassay protocols that adopt MNU as an initiating agent for carcinogenesis.

The morphology and evolution of epithelial lesions that developed at a gastrojejunal stoma due to reflux of duodenal contents were compared with MNNG-induced carcinomas in the pyloric mucosa of rats in a long term experiment. Random bred male Wistar rats were given MNNG in drinking water (100 mg/l) for 12 weeks and then one group was submitted to a gastrojejunal anastomosis at the greater curvature in the oxyntic mucosa, Untreated rats underwent either gastrojejunostomy or gastrotomy. The animals were killed at the 24th and 66th weeks of the experiment. The lesions obtained in the pyloric mucosa and in the mucosa of the gastrojejunal stoma were analyzed histologically using hematoxylin and eosin staining and immunohistochemistry for pepsinogen isoenzyme 1. Duodenal reflux induced proliferative lesions at the gastrojejunal junction that increased in incidence and size with time. Histologically they consisted of benign epithelial proliferation of gastric type. No evidence of malignant transformation within the gastric components of the proliferative lesions at the gastrojejunal stoma was observed even at the 66th week, Adenocarcinomas induced by MNNG in the pyloric mucosa increased in size during the experiment and were morphologically and histochemically distinct from the proliferative lesions at the gastrojejunal junction. In conclusion, proliferative lesions at the gastrojejunal stoma stimulated by duodenal reflux are biologically distinct from adenocarcinomas induced by MNNG in the pyloric mucosa. They do not seem to be precursor lesions of gastric carcinogenesis, as they do not undergo malignant transformation even after long-term, up to 66 weeks, follow-up. (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. The orange-spined hairy dwarf porcupine (Sphiggurus villosus) is a rodent species common in most parts of South America, and little is known about the pathologies that can afflict it. A specimen was delivered at the Wildlife Research and Medical Center (CEMPAS), School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry, UNESP, Botucatu, SP, Brazil. The animal showed intense apathy, with purulent secretion in the nasal cavity and fracture of the lumbar spine. Due to the unfavorable prognosis, the porcupine was euthanized and microbiological culture of nasal discharge showed Staphylococcus epidermidis. The antimicrobial resistance test revealed sensitivity to all tested antimicrobials (ampicillin, oxacillin, tetracycline, penicillin G, neomycin, cephalexin, gentamicin, enrofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, cotrimoxazol, cefoxitin and cephalothin). This bacterium is part of the nasal flora of humans and other animals, and may cause infection under certain conditions. In the present study, the infection and colonization by S. epidermidis was the probable cause of the inflammatory process. The sensitivity to all tested antimicrobials suggests that this strain has not been previously exposed to such drugs.

Bond failures at the acrylic teeth and denture base resin interface are still a common clinical problem in prosthodontics. The effect of methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer on the bond strength of three types of denture base resins (Acron MC, Lucitone 550 and QC-20) to two types of acrylic teeth (Biotone and Trilux) was evaluated. Twenty specimens were produced for each denture base resin/acrylic tooth combination and were randomly divided into control (acrylic teeth received no surface treatment) and experimental groups (MMA was applied to the surface of the acrylic teeth for 180 s) and were submitted to shear tests (1 mm/mm). Data (MPa) were analyzed using three-way ANOVA/Student's test (alpha = 0.05). MMA increased the bond strength of Lucitone denture base resins and decreased the bond strength of QC-20. No difference was detected for the bond strength of Acron MC base resin after treatment with MMA. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Net photosynthesis (A) and transpiration rates (E), stomatal conductance (g), water use efficiency (WUE), intrinsic water use efficiency (IWUE) and internal leaf CO2 concentration (C) in response to different vapor pressure deficit (1.2 and 2.5 kPa) were investigated in 'Pera' sweet orange plants affected by citrus variegated chlorosis (CVC), a disease caused by Xylella fastidiosa. All plants were well watered and leaf water potential (Pw) was also measured by the psychrometric technique. Results showed that healthy plants responded to higher vapor pressure deficit (VPD), lowering its net photosynthesis and transpiration rates, and stomatal conductance. However, diseased plants presented no clear response to VPD, showing lower A, E and g for both VPDs studied and very similar values to these variables in healthy plants at the highest VPD. Internal leaf CO2 concentration also decreased for healthy plants when under the highest VPD, and surprisingly, the same pattern of response was found in plants with CVC. These results, the lower Psi(w) and higher WUE values for diseased plants, indicated that this disease may cause stomatal dysfunction and affect the water resistance through xylem vessels, which ultimately may play some role in photosynthetic metabolism.
