A white light interferometer is developed to measure the distributed polarization coupling in high-birefringence polarization-maintaining fibers (PMFs). Usually the birefringence dispersion between two orthogonal eigenmodes of PMFs is neglected in such systems. Theoretical analysis and experimental results show that the birefringence dispersion becomes a nonnegligible factor in a long-fiber test. Significant broadening of interferograms and loss of longitudinal coherence are observed. The spatial resolution and measurement sensitivity of the system decrease correspondingly. Optimum spectrum width selection is presented for better spatial resolution and measurement range. c 2007 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

High-performance InGaAs/InGaAlAs multiple-quantum-well vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) with lnGaAlAs/InP distributed Bragg reflectors are proposed for operation at the wavelength of 1.55 mum. The lasers have good heat diffusion characteristic, large index contrast in DBRs, and weak temperature sensitivity. They could be fabricated either by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) or by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) growth. The laser light-current characteristics indicate that a suitable reflectivity of the DBR on the light output side in a laser makes its output power increase greatly and its lasing threshold current reduce significantly, and that a small VCSEL could output the power around its maximum for the output mirror at the reflectivity varying in a broader range than a large VCSEL does. I. PREAMBLE AND SCOPE

Brief introductory remarks, together with a definition of the scope of the material discussed in the thesis, are given.

II. A STUDY OF THE DYNAMICS OF TRIPLET EXCITONS IN MOLECULAR CRYSTALS

Phosphorescence spectra of pure crystalline naphthalene at room temperature and at 77˚ K are presented. The lifetime of the lowest triplet 3B1u state of the crystal is determined from measurements of the time-dependence of the phosphorescence decay after termination of the excitation light. The fact that this lifetime is considerably shorter in the pure crystal at room temperature than in isotopic mixed crystals at 4.2˚ K is discussed, with special importance being attached to the mobility of triplet excitons in the pure crystal.

Excitation spectra of the delayed fluorescence and phosphorescence from crystalline naphthalene and anthracene are also presented. The equation governing the time- and spatial-dependence of the triplet exciton concentration in the crystal is discussed, along with several approximate equations obtained from the general equation under certain simplifying assumptions. The influence of triplet exciton diffusion on the observed excitation spectra and the possibility of using the latter to investigate the former is also considered. Calculations of the delayed fluorescence and phosphorescence excitation spectra of crystalline naphthalene are described.

A search for absorption of additional light quanta by triplet excitons in naphthalene and anthracene crystals failed to produce any evidence for the phenomenon. This apparent absence of triplet-triplet absorption in pure crystals is attributed to a low steady-state triplet concentration, due to processes like triplet-triplet annihilation, resulting in an absorption too weak to be detected with the apparatus used in the experiments. A comparison of triplet-triplet absorption by naphthalene in a glass at 77˚ K with that by naphthalene-h8 in naphthalene-d8 at 4.2˚ K is given. A broad absorption in the isotopic mixed crystal triplet-triplet spectrum has been tentatively interpreted in terms of coupling between the guest 3B1u state and the conduction band and charge-transfer states of the host crystal.

III. AN INVESTIGATION OF DELAYED LIGHT EMISSION FROM Chlorella Pyrenoidosa

An apparatus capable of measuring emission lifetimes in the range 5 X 10-9 sec to 6 X 10-3 sec is described in detail. A cw argon ion laser beam, interrupted periodically by means of an electro-optic shutter, serves as the excitation source. Rapid sampling techniques coupled with signal averaging and digital data acquisition comprise the sensitive detection and readout portion of the apparatus. The capabilities of the equipment are adequately demonstrated by the results of a determination of the fluorescence lifetime of 5, 6, 11, 12-tetraphenyl-naphthacene in benzene solution at room temperature. Details of numerical methods used in the final data reduction are also described.

The results of preliminary measurements of delayed light emission from Chlorella Pyrenoidosa in the range 10-3 sec to 1 sec are presented. Effects on the emission of an inhibitor and of variations in the excitation light intensity have been investigated. Kinetic analysis of the emission decay curves obtained under these various experimental conditions indicate that in the millisecond-to-second time interval the decay is adequately described by the sum of two first-order decay processes. The values of the time constants of these processes appear to be sensitive both to added inhibitor and to excitation light intensity.

The cytolytic interaction of Polyoma virus with mouse embryo cells has been studied by radiobiological methods known to distinguish temperate from virulent bacteriophage. No evidence for "temperate" properties of Polyoma was found. During the course of these studies, it was observed that the curve of inactivation of Polyoma virus by ultraviolet light had two components - a more sensitive one at low doses, and a less sensitive one at higher doses. Virus which survives a low dose has an eclipse period similar to that of unirradiated virus, while virus surviving higher doses shows a significantly longer eclipse period. If Puromycin is present during the early part of the eclipse period, the survival curve becomes a single exponential with the sensitivity of the less sensitive component. These results suggest a repair mechanism in mouse cells which operates more effectively if virus development is delayed.

A comparison of the rates of inactivation of the cytolytic and transforming abilities of Polyoma by ultraviolet light, X-rays, nitrous acid treatment, or the decay of incorporated P32, showed that the transforming ability has a target size roughly 60% of that of the plaque-forming ability. It is thus concluded that only a fraction of the viral genes are necessary for causing transformation.

The appearance of virus-specific RNA in productively infected mouse kidney cells has been followed by means of hybridization between pulse-labelled RNA from the infected cells and the purified virus DNA. The results show a sharp increase in the amount of virus-specific RNA around the time of virus DNA synthesis. The presence of a small amount of virus-specific RNA in virus-free transformed cells has also been shown. This result offers strong evidence for the persistence of at least part of the viral genome in transformed cells.

We have investigated ultraviolet (UV) photorefractive effect of lithium niobate doubly doped with Ce and Cu. It is found the diffraction efficiency shows oscillating behavior Under UV-1ight-recording. A model in which electrons and holes can be excited from impurity centers in the UV region is proposed to study the oscillatory behavior of the diffraction efficiency. Oil the basis of the material equations and the coupled-wave equations, we found that the oscillatory behavior is due to the oscillation of the relative spatial phase shift Phi. And the electron-hole competition may cause the oscillation of the relative spatial phase shift. A switch point from electron grating to hole grating is chosen to realize nonvolatile readout by a red light with high sensitivity (0.4 cm/J). (c) 2005 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we have investigated the grating erasure of a reduced LiNbO3:Fe crystal with different erasing wavelengths. The overall hologram evolution in the process of grating erasure is nonexponential due to strong absorption which is contrary to the mono-exponential law. The hologram in the rear part of the crystal can persist for a long time in the grating erasure due to weak erasing light intensity by strong absorption, which can enlarge the erasure time constant. From the erasure experiments, the global absorption ad 5 can be taken as the optimum absorption to acquire a good trade-off between the sensitivity and hologram strength in the crystal. By sensitizing with 514 nm green light, 488 nm blue light and 390 nm ultraviolet light, respectively, recording with 633 nm red light, effect of wavelength of sensitizing light on holographic storage properties in LiNbO3:Fe:Ni crystal is investigated in detail. It is shown that by shortening the wavelength of sensitizing light gradually, nonvolatile holographic recording properties of oxidized LiNbO3:Fe:Ni crystal is optimized gradually, 390 nm ultraviolet light is the best as the sensitizing light. Considering the absorption of sensitizing light, to obtain the best performance in two-center holographic recording we must choose a sensitizing wavelength that is long enough to prevent unwanted absorptions (band-to-band, etc.) and short enough to result in efficient sensitization from the deep traps. So in practice a trade-off is always needed. Explanation is presented theoretically. (c) 2005 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

A new method to measure the birefringence dispersion in high-birefringence polarization-maintaining fibers is presented using white-light interferometry. By analyzing broadening of low-coherence interferograms obtained in a scanning Michelson interferometer, the birefringence dispersion and its variation along different fiber sections are acquired with high sensitivity and accuracy. Birefringence dispersions of two PANDA fibers at their operation wavelength are measured to be 0.011 ps/(km nm) and 0.018 ps/(km nm), respectively. Distributed measurement capability of the method is also verified experimentally. (c) 2006 Optical Society of America.

The electro-optic effect in uniaxial crystals for light propagating near the optic axis with any polarization has been analyzed. The passive and the electrically induced birefringences and the rotation of polarization direction in crystals have been calculated, and the conoscopic interference figures under orthogonal polariscopes for different polarizer directions have been plotted. The extinction areas caused by the rotation of polarization direction in crystals change with the polarizer direction, but the two heads of the induced optical axes do not vary, which are always on the induced principal axis with bigger refractive index. The directions of polariscopes are always extinction, and the +/- 45 degrees directions with polarizer are always complete transmission. The conoscopic interference figures for LiNbO3 crystals have been demonstrated experimentally by rotating polariscopes directions, which accord with the theoretically calculating plots. Experimental measurements of rate of energy loss were made for protons of energy .5 to 1.6 MeV channeling through 1 μm thick silicon targets along the <110>, <111>, and <211> axial directions, and the {100}, {110}, {111}, and {211} planar directions. A .05% resolution automatically controlled magnetic spectrometer was used. The data are presented graphically along with an extensive summary of data in the literature. The data taken cover a wider range of channels than has previously been examined, and are in agreement with the data of F. Eisen, et al., Radd. Eff. 13, 93 (1972).

The theory in the literature for channeling energy loss due to interaction with local electrons, core electrons, and distant valence electrons of the crystal atoms is summarized. Straggling is analyzed, and a computer program which calculates energy loss and straggling using this theory and the Moliere approximation to the Thomas Fermi potential, VTF, and the detailed silicon crystal structure is described. Values for the local electron density Zloc in each of the channels listed above are extracted from the data by graphical matching of the experimental and computer results.

Zeroth and second order contributions to Zloc as a function of distance from the center of the channel were computed from ∇2VTF = 4πρ for various channels in silicon. For data taken in this work and data of F. Eisen, et al., Rad. Eff. 13, 93 (1972), the calculated zeroth order contribution to Zloc lies between the experimentally extracted Zloc values obtained by using the peak and the leading edge of the transmission spectra, suggesting that the observed straggling is due both to statistical fluctuations and to path variation.

The (He3, n) reactions on B11, N15, O16, and O18 targets have been studied using a pulsed-beam time-of-flight spectrometer. Special emphasis was placed upon the determination of the excitation energies and properties of states with T = 1 (in Ne18), T = 3/2 (in N13 and F17) and T = 2 (in Ne20). The identification of the T = 3/2 and T = 2 levels is based on the structure of these states as revealed by intensities and shapes of angular distributions. The reactions are interpreted in terms of double stripping theory. Angular distributions have been compared with plane and distorted wave stripping theories. Results for the four reactions are summarized below:

1) O16 (He3, n). The reaction has been studied at incident energies up to 13.5 MeV and two previously unreported levels in Ne18 were observed at Ex = 4.55 ± .015 MeV (Γ = 70 ± 30 keV) and Ex = 5.14 ± .018 MeV (Γ = 100 ± 40 keV).

2) B11 (He3, n). The reaction has been studied at incident energies up to 13.5 MeV. Three T = 3/2 levels in N13 have been identified at Ex = 15.068 ± .008 MeV (Γ ˂ 15 keV), Ex = 18.44 ± .04, and Ex 18.98 ± .02 MeV (Γ = 40 ± 20 keV).

3) N15 (He3, n). The reaction has been studied at incident energies up to 11.88 MeV. T = 3/2 levels in F17 have been identified at Ex = 11.195 ± .007 MeV (Γ ˂ 20 keV), Ex = 12.540 ± .010 MeV (Γ ˂ 25 keV), and Ex = 13.095 ± .009 MeV (Γ ˂ 25 keV).

4) O18 (He3, n). The reaction has been studied at incident energies up to 9.0 MeV. The excitation energy of the lowest T = 2 level in Ne20 has been found to be 16.730 ± .006 MeV (Γ ˂ 20 keV).

Angular distributions of the transitions leading to the above higher isospin states are well described by double stripping theory. Analog correspondences are established by comparing the present results with recent studies (t, p) and (He3, p) reactions on the same targets.
