Located on the Annapurna trekking trail in Nepal, Siurung is a remote mountain village where outside influences are almost non-existent. The thermal comfort levels of a recently-constructed kindergarten are well below international standards because of the climate and poor building envelope. A TRNSYS model of the kindergarten has been used to predict the current occupant comfort levels and subsequently determine the most effective way to alter the traditional construction methods to improve comfort levels. Improvements investigated were: reduced air infiltration, roof and wall insulation (separately and together), installation of a smokeless stove and a combination of all strategies. The model predicted that in the current building the PMV ranges from -1.94 in October to - 0.99 in July. It also predicted that the current PPD (%) ranges from 100 in January to 26 in July. With the combination of strategies, the predicted PMV values were all improved to between -1.08 and +0.34, and the PPD values of all months except January were reduced to below 10%. When improving the comfort levels of an existing school, reducing air infiltration, adding roof insulation and installing a smokeless stove are the most effective strategies. When constructing a new school, however, reducing air infiltration and adding insulation to the walls and roof are the most effective and feasible strategies. If a smokeless stove can be afforded and transported to the site, it is recommended that one be installed as it provides a more significant improvement than any other single strategy.

"Reproduction" is a mixed reality installation that investigates the flow of data between the material world and synthetic worlds, in particular realtime 3D environments, through the creation of a persistent realtime 3D environment populated with agent entities that evolve over the duration of the exhibition in response to the actions of the human visitors to the 10 metre dome.

"The drawer and the drawing" is an installation that is a direct response to the Deakin artists books collection. Using original drawing, hand colouring, computer enhanced artwork, paper-cutouts, photographs, I created a glimpse of what the “book” tells me about the artist? I created "artworks, the books and the ephemera that was left over and behind when the “artbook” was taken away and placed in a gallery.

This series of works "Handunes" were in response to a curatorial premise that my colleagues, Patrick West and Valerie Jeremijenko produced for a invited workshop and in tensive fabrication. The premise was to re-think the notion of the souvenir and how things are mad in a place by starting with a sensation of place and building an object (reverse engineering it) from that sensation or experience. this works against the notion of an miniature icon. these objects and documented processes were exhibited at the end of the one week intensive workshop.

Expanding horizons (Reykjavík) (2012-2013) is part of an ongoing series of interactive net-art/installation works that explores the space of the horizon line. Produced with time-lapse photography, animated movements, and playing with perception, this work explores how the vastness of a horizon line can be captured, compressed and re-presented for viewers to align with as an artwork

The artworks in this exhibition form part of my practice-led PhD research. As a daily task while travelling, packing a bag becomes a complex process, as we juggle the many movements in acquiring, discarding and arranging objects.

These artworks aim to highlight the many material interactions we have during the packing process, emphasising the ways in which we arrange materials and consider spatial constraints. For instance, how much we can “fit” in a bag, or, how we use the space of the room we are within, as well as the many movements our bodies undertake with the materials.

Exhibited works:
"Packing Diagrams", laminated digital prints
"Tracking the packing process", interactive installation
"Packing (exploring)", interactive installation, mixed media
"Packing (puzzle)", interactive installation
"bodies + bags" (excerpt), digital video loop

An 8 screen stereoscopic 3D Multi-user environment set in a circular formation. Paticipants are tracked by 8 kinect sensors as they move around the 360 degree installation. Participants inherit a species upon entering. Artificial Life based entities cluster towards the human particpants of their species and their songs evolve according to the interactions.

An imaginative arts project inspired by the Volcanic Plains region of Western Victoria will be showcased in Warrnambool this week where participants will also be able to experience the art of dry stone walling. The aim is to imagine the life of the stones and to re-perform and experience what it might have been like to work alongside a team of stonewallers from the late 1800's out in the fields producing about 30 meters of wall per day. This imaginary archaeology provides lesson in the doing of our ongoing relationship to the land and to place and place-making.

I coordinated a series of workshops - involving researchers Merinda Kelly, Dr Jondi Keane and David Fitzsimmons - on object, space and performance which led to a major exhibition outcome for participating artists. Specifically I led a workshop with installation artist David Fitzsimmons on spatial practices.

Initiated by Courthouse ARTS and in partnership with Deakin’s School of Communication and Creative Arts Geelong hosted a fringe festival event titled 'The New Wilderness'. This is the an extract from the proposal put forward to both the board at Courthouse ARTS centre and the executive in the Faculty of Arts and Education:

Given the change in the economic foundations and demographics in the region a festival of the arts, centred in Geelong, is timely and, potentially, regenerative. In a series of workshops, events, performances and exhibitions – staged at Courthouse ARTS, open to the community and spanning the first week of September – the focus will be on risk, innovation, subversion and transformation. Incorporating each of these words as prompts one exciting project, The New Wilderness, uses the visual arts, creative writing and the performing arts to engage young people in practice and cross-disciplinary collaboration. With an emphasis on process the project will engage participants in a lab/studio environment over a week. Installation artists and Deakin staff members will facilitate an introduction and workshop on the theme, The New Wilderness, asking that participants respond: firstly in making a series of images and installations that transform space; secondly, in creative writing responses; and thirdly, in a series of short performance pieces interpreting the text, images and spaces created during the week. Participants will be on a time-line and encouraged to interpret and critically engage with the theme, each other and the issues set to transform the region – such as the disappearing manufacturing industry and the vast spaces it leaves behind.
