The intervertebral disc disease is considered a major neurological disorder involving the spinal cord, being a disease commonly seen in dogs in clinical practice of small animals. The pathophysiology of most discopathies have not been fully elucidated, but it is known that the symptoms observed will depend on the severity of spinal cord compression and location of spinal injury, ranging from localized pain to complete paralysis. Through a detailed clinical examination and laboratory tests, we choose the most appropriate treatment for each patient, which can be conservative, through the use of anti-inflammatories, analgesics and acupuncture or surgical, through decompression techniques. Acupuncture, therapeutic method of ancient Chinese medicine, uses the stimulation of specific points on the body in order to balance the body's physiological. The action mechanism of acupuncture in discopathies has not been fully elucidated, but its analgesic effects, anti-inflammatory and restoration of sensory and motor function are known, showing results as good as surgical therapy

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic illness with great potential to cause comorbidities resulting from cumulative inflammatory activities, and it contributes with the increase of disabilities and death of patients. It affects 1 to 2% of world population and usually occurs between 30 and 50 years of age. Among existing therapeutic options for the disease non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) still play an important part in the treatment, being widely used by patients to relieve pain and stiffness. However, this class of drugs causes many adverse gastrointestinal effects, such as dyspepsia, heartburn, nausea and vomit, and its use is one of the most common causes of peptic ulcers. Mangiferin (a glicosilated xanthone extracted mainly from the bark of Mangifera indica L.) is the main compound of an aqueous extract made from the bark stem of the mango tree. Previous studies conducted by our research group prove the anti-inflammatory action of mangiferin on an animal model of periodontitis, and its gastroprotective action has been described before. Considering these informations this study evaluated mangiferin’s potential on the treatment of RA and on gastric ulcer healing in animal models, and analyzed toxicity parameters to assure efficacy and safety of the compound as potential new drug for the treatment of the disease. RA was induced in rats by subcutaneous injection of bovine collagen and Freund’s complete adjuvant. This method presented low incidence of RA in rats, but we were able to induce the disease in 60 to 70% of the animals. Due to the wide use of NSAIDs and its potential to cause peptic ulcers, we induced gastric ulcer on arthritic rats to analyze mangiferin’s gastric healing effect. After 14 days of treatment we noticed small increase of the lesion area of animals treated with mangiferin or ibuprofen, when compared to the animals... The intervertebral disc diseases have a high casuistic in clinical routines veterinary among dogs. These conditions can cause pain, paresis or paralysis of limbs depending on the degree of injury. Clinical signs are not limited to the intervertebral disc, other anatomical parts are included. In conventional medicine, treatment may be surgical or clinical, by the use of corticosteroids with muscle relaxants. Acupuncture was an alternative to treating these diseases due to its anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. Although there are few studies for the treatment of discopathies, acupuncture triggers the release of substances such as dynorphins, beta-endorphins and serotonin, among others; that act inhibiting somatic and visceral pain. Electroacupuncture is used to potentiate the effects of acupuncture. It can be performed with different frequencies according to the clinical evolution. However there are different opinions related to the greater efficacy in relation to acupuncture. The restraint and monitoring of the treated animal are important factors for its recovery. The association between acupuncture and conventional treatment (surgical or clinical) achieved better results than acupuncture alone. This proves that acupuncture can be considered an option in order to minimize the complications of surgery or assist in patient recovery

Melatonin is an endoleamine that has anti-inflammatory, immunomodulating and antioxidants properties. But there is a contradiction between the antioxidant effects of melatonin and glutathione (GSH). Therefore, the main objective of this work was to study the effect of melatonin on the oxidation of GSH and the effect of GSH on the oxidation of melatonin by peroxyl radicals generated by thermolysis of 2,2 -Azobis(2- amino-propane)-dihydrochloride (AAPH). The influence of the reaction conditions and the identity of the products of oxidation were also studied. The main products obtained during the oxidation of melatonin were its monohydroxylated derivative and N1-acetyl- N2-formyl-5-methoxykynuramine (AFMK), which is the product obtained by oxidative cleavage of the melatonin indole ring. By studying the buffer type, pH and the presence or absence of dissolved oxygen in the reaction system, it was observed that, the yield of AFMK was higher when the pH or the concentration of oxygen was increased. Comparing the reactivity of both molecules GSH and melatonin, it can be seen that intermediates radicals generated during the oxidation of melatonin are able to oxidize GSH itself. We propose that this chemical property could justify the recent reports that demonstrated the inability of melatonin to inhibit the oxidation of GSH in cells

Acupuncture is a technique belonging to traditional Chinese medicine that has existed for over 3000 years. It consists of stimuli by pressure, needling, heat and electrical stimulation of the skin at specific points to restore the health of patients. This technique has been increasingly incorporated into the West and therefore the research explaining its various mechanisms become very important to translate these ancient skills. This article is a literature review summarizing the basic concepts, historical and local, anti-inflammatory and neurological effects acupuncture in the body

The stomach is an exceptional organ, which functions are sterilize food ingested, form the primitive bolus, digest lipids and proteins, and to store food temporarily in the gastrointestinal tract. Its capacity of digesting food without digesting itself is amazing. This fact occurs due to innumerous protective substances adjacent to the gastric mucosa. When aggressive factors overwhelm the protective factors, a lesion in the gastric mucosa is formed. Lesions that reach the lamina propria are called gastric ulcers, which are classified macroscopically as openings on the gastric wall and; microscopically, as a gastric injury characterized with epithelial desquamation, mucosal hemorrhage, glandular damage and eosinophilic infiltration. The current therapy available is effective, although it causes collateral effects, therefore researching new drugs is necessary. This work aim to evaluate the gastroprotective effect of epicatechin against gastric lesions induced by absolute ethanol and non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs which are the main causes of this disease currently, yet we aim to study the main mechanisms of action responsible for the gastroprotective effect. The results show that epicatechin has a significant macroscopic and microscopic gastroprotective effect against gastric injuries induced by ethanol and indomethacin, acting locally by augmenting gastric mucus secretion and it also acts via antioxidant system by holding total glutathione levels. Epicatechin’s gastroprotective mechanisms depend on the activation of sulfhydryl compounds and doesn’t depend on the NO-synthase enzyme

Natural rubber latex from Hevea brasiliensis has interesting characteristics related to this work such as: it is easy to manipulate, low cost, can stimulate the natural angiogenesis, is a biocompatible material and presents high mechanical resistance. The aim of this study was to develop a novel sustained delivery system for Stryphnodendron sp. based on Natural Rubber Latex (NRL) membranes and to study the Stryphnodendron sp. delivery system behavior. Stryphnodendron sp., commonly known as barbatimao is extensively used in folk medicine for the treatment of diarrhoea, gynaecological problems and for healing wounds. The stem bark of this species is mentioned in the Brazilian Pharmacopeia with a content of at least 20% of tannins. Previous studies showed significant cicatrizant properties, anti-inflammatory activity and gastric anti-ulcerogenic effects for the stem bark crude extract. One possible way to accelerate the tissue repair process, it was incorporated the Stryphnodendron sp. extract in NRL membranes. Stryphnodendron sp extract was incorporated into the NRL, by mixing it in solution for in vitro protein delivery experiments. Results show that the NRL membrane can release Stryphnodendron sp. for up to 49.89% of its Stryphnodendron sp. content for up 400 h. The kinetics of the extract release could be fitted with double exponential function, with two characteristic times of 0.78 and 133.22 h. In this study, we demonstrated that the induced angiogenesis provided by NRL membranes combined with a controlled release of extract is relevant for biomedical applications.
