Catalytic conversion of N2O to N-2 With potassium catalysts supported on activated carbon (K/AC) was investigated. Potassium proves to be much more active and stable than either copper or cobalt because potassium possesses strong abilities both for N2O chemisorption and oxygen transfer. Potassium redispersion is found to play a critical role in influencing the catalyst stability. A detailed study of the reaction mechanism was conducted based upon three different catalyst loadings. It was found that during temperature-programmed reaction (TPR), the negative oxygen balance at low temperatures (< 50 degrees C) is due to the oxidation of the external surface of potassium oxide particles, while the bulk oxidation accounts for the oxygen accumulation at higher temperatures (below ca. 270 degrees C). N2O is beneficial for the removal of carbon-oxygen complexes because of the formation of CO2 instead of CO and because of its role in making the chemisorption of produced CO2 on potassium oxide particles less stable. A conceptual three-zone model was proposed to clarify the reaction mechanism over K/AC catalysts. CO2 chemisorption at 250 degrees C proves to be an effective measurement of potassium dispersion. The effect of acidic treatments on N2O reduction over Ni catalysts supported on activated carbon was systematically studied. The catalysts were characterized by N-2 adsorption, mass titration, temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS). It is found that surface chemistry plays an important role in N2O-carbon reaction catalyzed by Ni catalyst. HNO3 treatment produces more active acidic surface groups such as carboxyl and lactone, resulting in a more uniform catalyst dispersion and higher catalytic activity. However, HCl treatment decreases active acidic groups and increases the inactive groups, playing an opposite role in the catalyst dispersion and catalytic activity. A thorough discussion of the mechanism of the N2O catalytic reduction is made based upon results from isothermal reactions, temperature-programmed reactions (TPR) and characterization of catalysts. The effect of acidic treatment on pore structure is also discussed. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A two-step method of loading controlled amounts of transition metal cations into alumina pillared clays (Al-PILCs) is proposed. First, calcined Al-PILC was dispersed into an aqueous solution of sodium or ammonium ions. Increasing the pH of the dispersion resulted in an increase in the amount of cations loaded into the clay. The ion-doped Al-PILC was then exchanged with an aqueous solution of transition metal salt at a pH of similar to 4.5 to replace Na+ or NH4+ ions by transition metal cations. Analytical techniques such as atomic absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, diffuse reflectance-ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, as well as N-2 adsorption were used to characterize the PILC products with and without the loading of metal ions. The introduced transition metal species exist in the forms of hydrated ions in the PILC hosts. The content of transition metal ions in the final product increased with the amount of Na+ or NH4+ loaded in the first step so that by controlling the pH of the dispersion in the first step, one can control the doping amounts of transition metal cations into Al-PILCs. A sample containing 0.125 mmol/g of nickel was thus obtained, which is similar to 3 times of that obtained by directly exchanging Al-PILC with Ni(NO3)(2) solution, while the pillared layered structures of the Al-PILC remained. The porosity analysis using N-2 adsorption data indicated that most of the doped transition metal ions dispersed homogeneously in the micropores of the Al-PILC, significantly affecting the micropore structure.

Previous experimental studies showed that the presence of O-2 greatly enhances NO-carbon reaction while it depresses N2O-carbon reaction on carbon surfaces. A popular explanation for the rate increase is that the addition of O-2 results in a large number of reactive carbon-oxygen complexes, and decomposition of these complexes produces many more active sites. The explanation for the latter is that excess O-2 simply blocks the active sites, thus reducing the rate of N2O-carbon reaction. The contradiction is that O-2 can also occupy active sites in NO-carbon reaction and produce active sites in N2O-carbon reduction. By using ab initio calculation, we find that the opposite roles of O-2 are caused by the different manners of N2O and NO adsorption on the carbon surface. In the presence of excess O-2, most Of the active sites are occupied by oxygen groups. In the competition for the remaining active sites, NO is more likely to chemisorb in the form of NO2 and NO chemisorption is mon thermodynamically favorable than O-2 chemisorption. By contrast, the presence of excess O-2 makes N2O chemisorption much less thermally stable either on the consecutive edge sites or edge sites isolated by semiquinone oxygen. A detailed analysis and discussion of the reaction mechanism of N-2 formation from NO- and N2O-carbon reaction in the presence of O-2 is presented in this paper.

In the present work the meso- and macro-structural characteristics of the mesoporous adsorbent MCM-41 have been estimated with the help of various techniques. The structure is found to comprise four different length scales: that of the mesopores, the crystallites, the grains and of the particles. It was found that the surface area estimated by the use of small angle scattering techniques is higher, while that estimated by mercury porosimetry is much lower, than that obtained from gas adsorption methods. Based on the macropore characterization by mercury porosimetry, and the considerable macropore area determined, it is seen that the actual mesopore area of MCM-41 may be significantly lower than the BET area. TEM studies indicated that MCM-41 does not have an ideal mesopore structure; however, it may still be treated as a model mesoporous material for gas adsorption studies because of the large radius of curvature of the channels.

Equilibrium phase relations in the PbO-Al2O3-SiO2 system have been investigated experimentally by means of high-temperature equilibration, quenching, and electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA). The system has 21 primary phase fields including three monoxides (PbO, Al2O3, and SiO2), seven binary compounds (Al6Si2O13, PbAl2O4, PbAl12O19, Pb2Al2O5, PbSiO3, Pb2SiO4, and Pb4SiO6), and eleven ternary compounds (PbAl2Si2O8, Pb3Al10SiO20, Pb4Al2Si2O11, Pb4Al4SiO12, Pb4Al4Si3O16, Pb4Al4Si5O20, Pb5Al2Si10O28, Pb6Al2Si6O21, Pb8Al2Si4O19, Pb12Al2Si17O49, and Pb12Al2Si20O55). Three new ternary compounds, Pb4Al4SiO12, Pb4Al4Si5O20, and Pb12Al2Si17O49, were observed and characterized by EPMA. No extensive solid solution in any of the compounds was found in the present study. The liquidus isotherms were experimentally determined in most of the primary phase fields in the temperature range from 923 to 1873 K, and the ternary phase diagram of the PbO-Al2O3-SiO2 System has been constructed.

Mesoporous Ti-substituted aluminophosphates (AlPOs) with a hexagonal, cubic and lamellar pore structure, characteristic of MCM-41, MCM-48. and MCM-50, respectively, were synthesized. The stability of these mesophases upon template removal was studied. The pore structures, surface properties, and local atom environments of Al, P, and Ti of the hexagonal and cubic Ti-containing mesoporous products were extensively characterized using X-ray diffraction, magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance, AAS, XPS, ultraviolet-visible, and adsorption of nitrogen and water vapor techniques while the lamellar mesophase was not further characterized due to its very poor thermal stability. Ti-containing mesoporous AlPO materials show a reasonable thermal stability upon template removal, a hydrophilic surface property, and high porosity showing application potentials in catalytic oxidation of hydrocarbons. A heterogeneous copper catalyst supported on mesoporous MCM-41 was developed. The parent MCM-41 has a large pore area of over 1400 m(2)/g. Copper was chosen as the active element of catalyst and loaded into MCM-41 by adsorption at ambient temperature. The prepared catalysts were evaluated in the catalytic wet oxidation of phenol solution with an initial concentration of 1,300 ppm at 150 and 200 degreesC. The catalyst was found to be of high catalytic activity. It is also shown that the catalyst with a higher copper loading exhibits higher ability of accelerating the catalytic reaction to certain extent but reaches its constant level afterwards. Metal oxide pillared clay (PILC) possesses several interesting properties, such as large surface area, high pore volume and tunable pore size (from micropore to mesopore), high thermal stability, strong surface acidity and catalytic active substrates/metal oxide pillars. These unique characteristics make PILC an attractive material in catalytic reactions. It can be made either as catalyst support or directly used as catalyst. This paper is a continuous work from Kloprogge's review (J.T. Kloprogge, J. Porous Mater. 5, 5 1998) on the synthesis and properties of smectites and related PILCs and will focus on the diverse applications of clay pillared with different types of metal oxides in the heterogeneous catalysis area and adsorption area. The relation between the performance of the PILC and its physico-chemical features will be addressed.

The efficient expression and purification of an interfacially active peptide (mLac21) was achieved by using bioprocess-centered molecular design (BMD), wherein key bioprocess considerations are addressed during the initial molecular biology work. The 21 amino acid mLac21 peptide sequence is derived from the lac repressor protein and is shown to have high affinity for the oil-water interface, causing a substantial reduction in interfacial tension following adsorption. The DNA coding for the peptide sequence was cloned into a modified pET-31(b) vector to permit the expression of mLac21 as a fusion to ketosteroid isomerase (KSI). Rational iterative molecular design, taking into account the need for a scaleable bioprocess flowsheet, led to a simple and efficient bioprocess yielding mLac21 at 86% purity following ion exchange chromatography (and >98% following chromatographic polishing). This case study demonstrates that it is possible to produce acceptably pure peptide for potential commodity applications using common scaleable bioprocess unit operations. Moreover, it is shown that BMD is a powerful strategy that can be deployed to reduce bioseparation complexity. (C) 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Pt-Sn electrocatalysts of different compositions were prepared and dispersed on carbon Vulcan XC-72 using the Pechini-Adams method. The catalysts were characterized by energy dispersive X-ray analysis and X-ray diffraction. The electrochemical properties of these electrode materials were also examined by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometric experiments in acid medium. The results showed that the presence of Sn greatly enhances the activity of Pt towards the electrooxidation of ethanol. Moreover, it contributes to reduce the amount of noble metal in the anode of direct alcohol fuel cells, which remains one of the challenges to make the technology of direct alcohol fuel cells possible. Electrolysis of ethanol solutions at 0.55 V vs. RHE allowed to determine by liquid chromatography acetaldehyde and acetic acid as the main reaction products. CO(2) was also analyzed after trapping it in a NaOH solution indicating that the cleavage of the C-C bond in the ethanol molecule did occur during the adsorption process. In situ IR reflectance spectroscopy helped to investigate in more details the reaction mechanism through the identification of the reaction products as well as the presence of some intermediate adsorbed species, such as linearly bonded carbon monoxide. In this work we report the interaction effects of the local anesthetic dibucaine (DBC) with lipid patches in model membranes by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Supported lipid bilayers (egg phosphatidylcholine, EPC and dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine, DMPQ were prepared by fusion of unilamellar vesicles on mica and imaged in aqueous media. The AFM images show irregularly distributed and sized EPC patches on mica. On the other hand DMPC formation presents extensive bilayer regions on top of which multibilayer patches are formed. In the presence of DBC we observed a progressive disruption of these patches, but for DMPC bilayers this process occurred more slowly than for EPC. In both cases, phase images show the formation of small structures on the bilayer surface suggesting an effect on the elastic properties of the bilayers when DBC is present. Dynamic surface tension and dilatational surface elasticity measurements of EPC and DMPC monolayers in the presence of DBC by the pendant drop technique were also performed, in order to elucidate these results. The curve of lipid monolayer elasticity versus DBC concentration, for both EPC and DMPC cases, shows a maximum for the surface elasticity modulus at the same concentration where we observed the disruption of the bilayer by AFM. Our results suggest that changes in the local curvature of the bilayer induced by DBC could explain the anesthetic action in membranes. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Different stoichiometries are observed between alpha and beta subunits of Na,K-ATPase that depend on the method employed to solubilize and purify the enzyme. It is not known whether this variability is due to loss of protein-protein association, or is a result of the replacement of essential phospholipids by detergent molecules. With the aim of understanding the effect of enzyme/surfactant ratio on both the catalytic activity and the enzyme structure, we have investigated the bulk and surface properties of the enzyme. The circular dichroism (CD) spectra, surface tension and dilatational surface elasticity results were compared with the residual ATPase activity of the Na,K-ATPase in different surfactant and protein concentrations. Na,K-ATPase in the (alpha beta)(2) form dissociated to the alpha beta form on dilution, and associated to the (alpha beta)(4) form when concentrated. These different stoichiometries have similar ATPase activities and are in equilibrium at C(12)E(8) concentrations below the CIVIC (0.053 mg mL(-1)). At detergent concentrations above the CIVIC the ATPase activity of all forms was abolished, which is concomitant with the dissociation of the a and subunits. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. Bovine testicular hyalurphidase (BT-HAase), a tetrameric enzyme responsible for randomly hyaluronic acid, catalytic hydrolysis, was successfully immobilized on Langmuir- Blodgett films prepared with the sodium salt of dihexadacylphosphoric acid, (DHP-Zn(II)) ending with dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine, DPPC. Data of protein, adsorption at the air-liquid interface by means of pendant drop shipe analysis and interaction of the protein with Langmuir monolayers of DPPC, using a Langmuir trough, have provided information. about the conditions to be used in the protein immobilization. The dynamic surface pressure curves obtained from pendant drop experiments for the enzyme in buffer solutions indicate that, within the range of concentration investigated in this study, the enzyme exhibits the largest induction time at 5 mu g L(-1) attributed to diffusion processes. Nevertheless, it seems that, at this concentration, the most probable conformation should be the one which occupies the smallest area at pi -> 0. The surface pressure (pi) area curves obtained for BT-HAase and mixed DPPC- BT-HAase monolayers reveal the presence of the enzyme at the air-lipid interface up to 45 mN m(-1). Tests of enzymatic activity, using hyaluronic acid, HA, as the substrate, showed an increase of activity compared to the homogeneous medium. A simplified model of protein insertion into the lipid matrix is used to explain the obtained results.

A glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored enzyme (rat osseous plate alkaline phosphatase-OAP) was studied as monolayer (pure and mixed with lipids) at the air-water interface. Surface pressure and surface potential-area isotherms showed that the enzyme forms a stable monolayer and exhibits a liquid-expanded state even at surface pressure as high as 30 mN m(-1). Isotherms for mixed dimyristoylphosphatidic acid (DMPA)-OAP monolayer showed the absence of a liquid-expanded/liquid-condensed phase transition as observed for pure DMPA monolayer. In both cases, pure or mixed monolayer, the enzyme preserves its native conformation under compression at the air-water interface as observed from in situ p-polarized light Fourier transform-infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopic (FT-IRRAS) measurements. Changes in orientation and conformation of the enzyme due to the presence or absence of DMPA, as well as due to the surface compression, are discussed. (C) 2008 Published by Elsevier Inc.
