A new model for fatigue damage evolution of polymer matrix composites (PMC) is presented. The model is based on a combination of an orthotropic damage model and an isotropic fatigue evolution model. The orthotropic damage model is used to predict the orthotropic damage evolution within a single cycle. The isotropic fatigue model is used to predict the magnitude of fatigue damage accumulated as a function of the number of cycles. This approach facilitates the determination of model parameters since the orthotropic damage model parameters can be determined from available data from quasi-static-loading tests. Then, limited amount of fatigue data is needed to adjust the fatigue evolution model. The combination of these two models provides a compromise between efficiency and accuracy. Decomposition of the state variables down to the constituent scale is accomplished by micro-mechanics. Phenomenological damage evolution models are then postulated for each constituent and for the micro-structural interaction among them. Model parameters are determined from available experimental data. Comparison between model predictions and additional experimental data is presented.

Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly-practiced surgical procedures in Western medicine, and, while complications are rare, the most serious is infectious postoperative endophthalmitis. Bacteria may adhere to the implanted intraocular lens (IOL) and subsequent biofilm formation can lead to a chronic, difficult to treat infection. To date, no method to reduce the incidence of infectious endophthalmitis through bacterial elimination, while retaining optical transparency, has been reported. In this study we report a method to optimise the localisation of a cationic porphyrin at the surface of suitable acrylate copolymers, which is the first point of contact with potential pathogens. The porphyrin catalytically generates short-lived singlet oxygen, in the presence of visible light, which kills adherent bacteria indiscriminately. By restricting the photosensitiser to the surface of the biomaterial, reduction in optical transparency is minimised without affecting efficacy of singlet oxygen production. Hydrogel IOL biomaterials incorporating either methacrylic acid (MAA) or methyl methacrylate (MMA) co-monomers allow tuning of the hydrophobic and anionic properties to optimise the localisation of porphyrin. Physiochemical and antimicrobial properties of the materials have been characterised, giving candidate materials with self-generating, persistent anti-infective character against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms. Importantly, incorporation of porphyrin can also serve to protect the retina by filtering damaging shortwave visible light, due to the Soret absorption (?max) 430 nm). © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. This communication reports on the synthesis and biophysical, biological and SAR studies of a small library of new anti-HIV aptamers based on the tetra-end-linked G-quadruplex structure. The new aptamers showed EC(50) values against HIV-1 in the range of 0.04-0.15 µM as well as affinities for the HIV-1 gp120 envelope in the same order of magnitude

Using in situ viscosity measurement, the rate of cellulose dissolution in a number of ionic liquids has been determined allowing their performance as solvents to be quantitatively assessed. 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium ethanoate was shown to dissolve cellulose faster than analogous ionic liquids with chloride or dimethylphosphate anions. Analysis of the data highlights the influence of both anion basicity and relative concentration on the rate of dissolution.

The dual template synthesis of zeolite SSZ-13 by use of trimethyl-adamantanammonium hydroxide and a diquaternary-ammonium mesoporogen induces considerable mesoporosity without impeding zeolite microporosity. The strongly improved accessibility of Bronsted sites in mesoporous SSZ-13 increases its stability during application as an acid catalyst in the methanol-to-olefins reaction.

The electrode potentials for the two one electron oxidations of 1,2-diferrocenylethylene (bisferrocene, BF) were studied relative to that of the one electrode oxidation of decamethylferrocene in a variety of RTILs. The difference in these potentials was found to be very sensitive to the anion component of the ionic liquid showing the scope of these solutes as 'designer media' to tune the thermodynamic properties of solutes dissolved in them.

This paper presents a three-dimensional continuum damage mechanics-based material model which was implemented in an implicit finite element code to simulate the progressive intralaminar degradation of fibre reinforced laminates. The damage model is based on ply failure mechanisms and uses seven damage variables assigned to tensile, compressive and shear damage at a ply level. Non-linear behaviour and irreversibility were taken into account and modelled. Some issues on the numerical implementation of the damage model are discussed and solutions proposed. Applications of the methodology are presented in Part II
Numerical analysis of intralaminar failure mechanisms in composite structures, Part II: Applications

A three-dimensional continuum damage mechanics-based material model was implemented in an implicit Finite Element code to simulate the progressive intralaminar degradation of fibre reinforced laminates based on ply failure mechanisms. This paper presents some structural applications of the progressive failure model implemented. The focus is on the non-linear response of the shear failure mode and its interaction with other failure modes. Structural applications of the damage model show that the proposed model is able to reproduce failure loads and patterns observed experimentally.

An intralaminar damage model, based on a continuum damage mechanics approach, is presented to model the damage mechanisms occurring in carbon fibre composite structures incorporating fibre tensile and compressive breakage, matrix tensile and compressive fracture, and shear failure. The damage model, together with interface elements for capturing interlaminar failure, is implemented in a finite element package and used in a detailed finite element model to simulate the response of a stiffened composite panel to low-velocity impact. Contact algorithms and friction between delaminated plies were included, to better simulate the impact event. Analyses were executed on a high performance computer (HPC) cluster to reduce the actual time required for this detailed numerical analysis. Numerical results relating to the various observed interlaminar damage mechanisms, delamination initiation and propagation, as well as the model’s ability to capture post-impact permanent indentation in the panel are discussed. Very good agreement was achieved with experimentally obtained data of energy absorbed and impactor force versus time. The extent of damage predicted around the impact site also corresponded well with the damage detected by non destructive evaluation of the tested panel.

Delamination and matrix cracking are routine damage mechanisms, observed by post-mortem analysis of laminated structures containing geometrical features such as notches or bolts. Current finite element tools cannot explicitly model an intralaminar matrix microcrack, except if the location of the damage is specified a priori. In this work, a meshless technique, the Element-Free Galerkin (EFG) method, is utilized for the first time to simulate delamination (interlaminar) and intralaminar matrix microcracking in composite laminates.

Experimental static and fatigue tension-tension tests were carried out on 5HS/RTM6 composite intact coupons and coupons incorporating adhesively-bonded (FM300-2) stepped flush joints. The results show that the adhesive joint, which is widely used in repairs, significantly reduces the static strength as well as the fatigue life of the composite. Both, the static and the fatigue failure of the ‘repaired’ coupons occur at the adhesive joint and involve crack initiation and propagation. The latter is modelled using interface finite elements based on the decohezive zone approach. The material degradation in the interface constitutive law is described by a damage variable, which can evolve due to the applied loads as well as the number of fatigue cycles. The fatigue formulation, based on a published model, is adapted to fit the framework of the pseudotransient formulation that is used as a numerical tool to overcome convergence difficulties. The fatigue model requires three material parameters. Numerical tests show that a single set of these parameters can be used to recover, very accurately, the experimental S-N relationship. Sensitivity studies show that the results are not mesh dependent.
