Yield strength (YS) ageing curves have been modelled for A356 and A357 aluminium casting alloys below the solvus temperature of the main hardening precipitate. Predictions are based on the Shercliff and Ashby methodology (Acta MetaH. Mater. 38 (1990) 1789) for wrought alloys. Differences between strengthening in wrought and cast Al-Si-Mg alloys are considered. A Brinell hardness to YS conversion incorporating strain hardening has been established to enable YS ageing curves to be predicted with reduced experimental effort. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. This is the first report of surface-active phospholipid as the boundary lubricant in total hip arthroplasty. Aspirate and rinsings from the bearing surfaces of 25 revision operations and one primary surgery were analyzed from 3 weeks to 26 years postoperatively. All samples contained substantial amounts of surface-active phospholipids ranging from 14 to 4186 μg. These findings indicate that synoviocytes continue producing the lubricant in significant quantities after arthroplasty surgery independent of the type of joint replacement and its fixation. Surface-active phospholipid was found on all bearing surfaces analyzed including polyethylene, stainless steel, chrome cobalt, alumina, zirconia, and titanium.

Uptake of nutrients and water depends on the growth of roots through elongation of individual cells near the. root tip. Many of the numerous components of Type I primary cell walls, those of dicotyledons and monocotyledons other than grasses (Poaceae), have been determined, and many hypotheses have been proposed for the control of cell expansion. This important aspect of plant growth still needs elucidation, however. A model is proposed in which pectin, which occurs as a calcium (Ca) pectate gel between the load-bearing cellulose microfibrils and xyloglucan (XG) chains, controls the rate at which cells expand. It is considered that the increasing tension generated by the expanding cell is transmitted to interlocked XG chains and cellulose microfibrils. The resulting deformation of the embedded Ca pectate gel elicits the excretion of protons from the cytoplasm, possibly via compounds such as cell wall-associated kinases, that weakens the Ca pectate gel, permitting slippage of XG molecules through the action of expansin. Further slippage is prevented by deformation of the pectic gel, proton diffusion, and the transfer of residual tension to adjacent XG chains. Evidence for this model is based on the effects of pH, Ca, and aluminum (Al) on root elongation and on the reactions of these cations with Ca pectate. This model allows for genetic selection of plants and adaptation of individual plants to root environmental conditions.

Aluminium (At) tolerance in plants may be conferred by reduced binding of Al in the cell wall through low root cation exchange capacity (CEC) or by organic acid exudation. Root CEC is related to the degree of esterification (DE) of pectin in the cell wall, and pectin hydrolysis plays a role in cell expansion. Therefore, it was hypothesised that Al-tolerant plants with a low root CEC maintain pectin hydrolysis in the presence of Al, allowing cell expansion to continue. Irrespective of the DE, binding of Al to pectin reduced the enzymatic hydrolysis of Al-pectin gels by polygalacturonase (E.C. 3.2.1.15). Pectin gels with calcium (Ca) were slightly hydrolysed by polygalacturonase. It was concluded, therefore, that Al tolerance conferred by low root CEC is not mediated by the ability to maintain pectin hydrolysis. Citrate and malate, but not acetate, effectively dissolved Al-pectate gel and led to hydrolysis of the dissolved pectin by polygalacturonase. The organic acids did not dissolve Ca-pectate, nor did they increase pectin hydrolysis by polygalacturonase. It was concluded that exudation of some organic acids can remove Al bound to pectin and this could alleviate toxicity, constituting a tolerance mechanism. Changes in composition during the maturation of Western Schley pecans [Carya illinoinensis (Wangenh.) K. Koch] grown in Australia were investigated. Pecans of different maturity levels were collected at monthly intervals between March and June in. 1999 and 2000 and analyzed for the concentrations of moisture, total lipid, sucrose, raffinose, protein, and the minerals aluminum, boron, calcium, copper, iron, potassium, magnesium, manganese, sodium, phosphorus, sulfur, and zinc. Moisture, total lipid, and calcium contents changed significantly (p < 0.05) with harvest time and maturity, whereas the other components did not. Western Schley pecans grown in Australia should be harvested after the shuck has opened and it is either green or brown in color to maximize total lipid content and quality. This occurred after May 11 in 1999 and after May 17 in 2000.

A new method is presented which allows the separation of the soil aggregate exterior from the aggregate core. The method employs a combination of aggregate freezing with rapid separation of aggregate exteriors using ultrasonic energy. The factors influencing the thickness of the removed aggregate surface layer include water content of the aggregate prior to freezing, temperature difference between that of the frozen aggregate and that of the liquid it is submerged in during sonification, sonification time and energy, and the type of the immersion liquid. The success of the method and the thickness of the removed aggregate surface were examined using barium ( Ba2+) as a tracer. Barium ( as BaCl2) is rapidly absorbed by soil and is present at only very low levels in natural soils. Surface layers of 0.2 - 0.4 cm thickness were successfully removed from aggregates of 1 - 4 cm diameter. Two examples are given from soils in northern NSW to demonstrate the occurrence of small- scale heterogeneity in soil chemical properties. Compared with the surface fraction, a 4 - 7% higher calcium concentration was found in the core fraction of a clay loam soil ( Dermosol). Conversely, on a cracking clay soil ( Vertosol), atrazine concentration was around 15 times greater in the aggregate surface fractions compared with core fractions. Compared with the traditional estimation of soil chemical properties on homogenised bulk soil samples, it is suggested that separate analysis of aggregate surface and core fractions could provide useful additional information on the relationships between soil properties and environmental responses.

A utilização do solo no Brasil foi realizada de forma exploratória, com a conversão de sistemas naturais em sistemas agrícolas extrativistas. Grande parte das áreas de sistemas naturais deu lugar às áreas de cultivo, posteriormente sucedidas por pastagens, encontrando-se boa parte em elevado estágio de degradação. Diante do exposto, o presente trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar a sensibilidade de alguns atributos físicos, químicos, compartimentos da matéria orgânica e determinações de campo como indicadores de qualidade do solo estabelecendo relações entre os mesmos. O estudo foi desenvolvido no município de Governador Valadares-MG, para tal foram escolhidos níveis de pastagens progressivamente degradadas observadas visualmente (pastagem 1, pastagem 2, pastagem 3 e pastagem 4), duas áreas de capoeira em estágios de regeneração natural (capoeira 1 e capoeira 2) e mata (referência). O solo em estudo foi um Argissolo Vermelho, textura argilosa. As determinações dos indicadores físicos, químicos e compartimentos da matéria orgânica foram realizadas em quatro profundidades (0-5, 5-10, 10-20 e 20-40 cm). Foram realizadas também determinações de campo, todos os atributos foram determinados no terço médio de uma pedoforma convexa, em dois períodos, chuvoso e seco. Através dos atributos do solo utilizados como indicadores do solo, foi possível separar dois níveis de pastagens degradadas, baixa degradação (pastagem 1 e pastagem 2) e elevada degradação (pastagem 3 e pastagem 4). A melhor qualidade do solo foi observada na área de mata. Entre os atributos do solo utilizados como indicadores de qualidade do solo os mais sensíveis aos níveis de pastagens degradadas são os atributos químicos pH, Ca2+, Mg2+, Al3+, H+Al, saturação por bases (V), saturação por alumínio (m), seguidos pelos atributos físicos macroporosidade e porosidade total. Os compartimentos da matéria orgânica do solo, matéria orgânica particulada (MOP), matéria orgânica leve (MOL) e carbono solúvel em água (CSA) utilizados como indicadores de qualidade do solo são eficientes em diferenciar a qualidade do solo nas conversões de sistema, mata/pastagens e pastagens/capoeiras, não sendo sensível aos níveis de pastagens degradadas, o que sugere estudos futuros utilizado compartimentos mais sensíveis a pequenas variações. As determinações de campo espessura do horizonte “A”, profundidade do sistema radicular e taxa de cobertura do solo são sensíveis aos níveis de pastagens degradadas, e apresentam uma boa correlação com os indicadores de laboratório macroporosidade (Ma), matéria orgânica particulada (MOP), saturação por bases (V), saturação por alumínio (m) sugerindo assim a utilização dessas determinações como indicadores de qualidade do solo em pastagens degradadas, para o solo e a região estudados.

Damping off is a nursery disease of great economic importance in papaya and seed treatment may be an effective measure to control. The aim of this work was to evaluate the quality of papaya seeds treated with fungicides and stored under two environmental and packaging conditions. Additionally, the efficiency of fungicide treatments in the control of damping-off caused by Rhizoctonia solani was evaluated. Papaya seeds were treated with the fungicides Captan, Tolylfluanid and the mixture Tolylfluanid + Captan (all commercial wettable powder formulations). Seeds of the control group were not treated. The seeds were stored for nine months in two conditions: packed in aluminum coated paper and kept at 7 ± 1ºC and in permeable kraft paper and kept in non-controlled environment. At the beginning of the storage and every three months the seed quality (germination and vigor tests), emergence rate index, height, dry mass and damping of plants in pre and post-emergence (in contaminated substrate and mycelia-free substrate) were analyzed. Both storage conditions as well as the fungicide treatments preserved the germination and seed vigor. In the infested substrate, seedling emergence was favored by fungicides, but in post-emergence, fungicides alone did not control the damping off caused by R. solani. Symptoms of damping off were not observed in the clean substrate. The results showed that the fungicide treatments may be used to pretreat papaya seed for long-term storage and commercialization.

The aim of this study is to assess the levels of airborne ultrafine particles emitted in welding processes (tungsten inert gas [TIG], metal active gas [MAG] of carbon steel, and friction stir welding [FSW] of aluminum) in terms of deposited area in pulmonary alveolar tract using a nanoparticle surface area monitor (NSAM) analyzer. The obtained results showed the dependence of process parameters on emitted ultrafine particles and demonstrated the presence of ultrafine particles compared to background levels. Data indicated that the process that resulted in the lowest levels of alveolar deposited surface area (ADSA) was FSW, followed by TIG and MAG. However, all tested processes resulted in significant concentrations of ultrafine particles being deposited in humans lungs of exposed workers.

This work addresses the present-day (<100 ka) mantle heterogeneity in the Azores region through the study of two active volcanic systems from Terceira Island. Our study shows that mantle heterogeneities are detectable even when "coeval" volcanic systems (Santa Barbara and Fissural) erupted less than 10 km away. These volcanic systems, respectively, reflect the influence of the Terceira and D. Joao de Castro Bank end-members defined by Beier et at (2008) for the Terceira Rift Santa Barbara magmas are interpreted to be the result of mixing between a HIMU-type component, carried to the upper mantle by the Azores plume, and the regional depleted MORB magmas/source. Fissural lavas are characterized by higher Ba/Nb and Nb/U ratios and less radiogenic Pb-206/Pb-204, Nd-143/Nd-144 and Hf-176/Hf-177, requiring the small contribution of delaminated sub-continental lithospheric mantle residing in the upper mantle. Published noble gas data on lavas from both volcanic systems also indicate the presence of a relatively undegassed component, which is interpreted as inherited from a lower mantle reservoir sampled by the ascending Azores plume. As inferred from trace and major elements, melting began in the garnet stability field, while magma extraction occurred within the spinel zone. The intra-volcanic system's chemical heterogeneity is mainly explained by variable proportions of the above-mentioned local end-members and by crystal fractionation processes. (C) 2011 Elsevier By. A copper(II) chiral aza-bis(oxazoline) homogeneous catalyst (CuazaBox) was anchored onto the external surface of MCM-22 and ITQ-2 structures, as well as encapsulated into hierarchical MCM-22. The transition metal complex loading onto the porous solids was determined by ICP-AES and the materials were also characterized by elemental analysis (C, N, H, S), FTIR, XPS, TG and low temperature N-2 adsorption isotherms. The materials were tested as heterogeneous catalysts in the benchmark reaction of cyclopropanation of styrene to check the effect of the immobilization procedure on the catalytic parameters, as well as on their reutilization in several catalytic cycles. Catalyst CuazaBox anchored onto the external surface of MCM-22 and ITQ-2 materials were more active and enantioselective in the cyclopropanation of styrene than the corresponding homogeneous phase reaction run under similar experimental conditions. This is due to the propylation of the acidic aza-Box nitrogen. HMCM-22 was nevertheless the best heterogeneous catalyst. Encapsulation of CuazaBox on post-synthesis modified MCM-22 materials led to low activities and enantioselectivities. But reversal on the stereochemical course of the reaction was observed, probably due to confinement effect. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

GOAL: The manufacturing and distribution of strips of instant thin - layer chromatography with silica gel (ITLC - SG) (reference method) is currently discontinued so there is a need for an alternative method f or the determination of radiochemical purity (RCP) of 99m Tc - tetrofosmin. This study aims to compare five alternative methods proposed by the producer to determine the RCP of 99m Tc - tetrofosmin. METHODS: Nineteen vials of tetrofosmin were radiolabelled with 99m Tc and the percentages of the RCP were determined. Five different methods were compared with the standard RCP testing method (ITLC - SG, 2x20 cm): Whatman 3MM (1x10 cm) with acetone and dichloro - methane (method 1); Whatman 3MM (1x1 0 cm) with ethyl acetate (method 2); aluminum oxide - coated plastic thin - layer chromatography (TLC) plate (1x10 cm) and ethanol (method 3); Whatman 3MM (2x20 cm) with acetone and dichloro - methane (method 4); solid - phase extraction method C18 cartridge (meth od 5). RESULTS: The average values of RCP were 95,30% ± 1,28% (method 1), 93,95 ± 0,61% (method 2), 96,85% ± 0,93% (method 3), 92,94% ± 0,99% (method 4) and 96,25% ± 2,57% (method 5) (n=12 each), and 93,15% ± 1,13% for the standard method (n=19). There we re statistical significant differences in the values obtained for methods 1 (P=0,001), 3 (P=0,000) and 5 (P=0,004), and there were no statistical significant differences in the values obtained for methods 2 (P=0,113) and 4 (P=0,327). CONCLUSION: From the results obtained, methods 2 and 4 showed a higher correlation with the standard method. Unlike method 4, method 2 is less time - consuming than the reference method and can overcome the problems associated with the solvent toxicity. The remaining methods (1, 3 and 5) tended to overestimate RCP value compared to the standard method.

O presente trabalho teve como principais objectivos, estudar e optimizar o processo de tratamento do efluente proveniente das máquinas da unidade Cold-press da linha de produção da Empresa Swedwood, caracterizar a solução límpida obtida no tratamento e estudar a sua integração no processo, e por fim caracterizar o resíduo de pasta de cola obtido no tratamento e estudar a possível valorização energética deste resíduo. Após caracterização inicial do efluente e de acordo com os resultados de um estudo prévio solicitado pela Empresa Swedwood a uma empresa externa, decidiu-se iniciar o estudo de tratabilidade do efluente pelo processo físico-químico a coagulação/floculação. No processo de coagulação/floculação estudou-se a aplicabilidade, através de ensaios Jar-test, dos diferentes agentes de coagulação/floculação: a soda cáustica, a cal, o cloreto férrico e o sulfato de alumínio. Os melhores resultados neste processo foram obtidos com a adição de uma dose de cal de 500 mg/Lefluente, seguida da adição de 400 mg/Lefluente de sulfato de alumínio. Contudo, após este tratamento o clarificado obtido não possuía as características necessárias para a sua reintrodução no processo fabril nem para a sua descarga em meio hídrico. Deste modo procedeu-se ao estudo de tratamentos complementares. Nesta segunda fases de estudo testaram-se os seguintes os tratamentos: a oxidação química por Reagente de Fenton, o tratamento biológico por SBR (sequencing batch reactor) e o leito percolador. Da análise dos resultados obtidos nos diferentes tratamentos conclui-se que o tratamento mais eficaz foi o tratamento biológico por SBR com adição de carvão activado. Prevê-se que no final do processo de tratamento o clarificado obtido possa ser descarregado em meio hídrico ou reintroduzido no processo. Como o estudo apenas foi desenvolvido à escala laboratorial, seria útil poder validar os resultados numa escala piloto antes da sua implementação industrial. A partir dos resultados do estudo experimental, procedeu-se ao dimensionamento de uma unidade de tratamento físico-químico e biológico à escala industrial para o tratamento de 20 m3 de efluente produzido na fábrica, numa semana. Dimensionou-se ainda a unidade (leito de secagem) para tratamento das lamas produzidas. Na unidade de tratamento físico-químico (coagulação/floculação) os decantadores estáticos devem possuir o volume útil de 4,8 m3. Sendo necessários semanalmente 36 L da suspensão de cal (Neutrolac 300) e 12,3 L da solução de sulfato de alumínio a 8,3%. Os tanques de armazenamento destes compostos devem possuir 43,2 litros e 96 litros, respectivamente. Nesta unidade estimou-se que são produzidos diariamente 1,4 m3 de lamas. Na unidade de tratamento biológico o reactor biológico deve possuir um volume útil de 6 m3. Para que este processo seja eficaz é necessário fornecer diariamente 2,1 kg de oxigénio. Estima-se que neste processo será necessário efectuar a purga de 325 litros de lamas semanalmente. No final da purga repõe-se o carvão activado, que poderá ser arrastado juntamente com as lamas, adicionando-se 100 mg de carvão por litro de licor misto. De acordo com o volume de lamas produzidos em ambos os tratamentos a área mínima necessária para o leito de secagem é de cerca de 27 m2. A análise económica efectuada mostra que a aquisição do equipamento tem o custo de 22.079,50 euros, o custo dos reagentes necessários neste processo para um ano de funcionamento tem um custo total de 508,50 euros e as necessidades energéticas de 2.008,45 euros.
