The Agricultural Production Systems slMulator, APSIM, is a cropping system modelling environment that simulates the dynamics of soil-plant-management interactions within a single crop or a cropping system. Adaptation of previously developed crop models has resulted in multiple crop modules in APSIM, which have low scientific transparency and code efficiency. A generic crop model template (GCROP) has been developed to capture unifying physiological principles across crops (plant types) and to provide modular and efficient code for crop modelling. It comprises a standard crop interface to the APSIM engine, a generic crop model structure, a crop process library, and well-structured crop parameter files. The process library contains the major science underpinning the crop models and incorporates generic routines based on physiological principles for growth and development processes that are common across crops. It allows APSIM to simulate different crops using the same set of computer code. The generic model structure and parameter files provide an easy way to test, modify, exchange and compare modelling approaches at process level without necessitating changes in the code. The standard interface generalises the model inputs and outputs, and utilises a standard protocol to communicate with other APSIM modules through the APSIM engine. The crop template serves as a convenient means to test new insights and compare approaches to component modelling, while maintaining a focus on predictive capability. This paper describes and discusses the scientific basis, the design, implementation and future development of the crop template in APSIM. On this basis, we argue that the combination of good software engineering with sound crop science can enhance the rate of advance in crop modelling. As end-user computing becomes more pervasive, an organization's success increasingly depends on the ability of end-users, usually in managerial positions, to extract appropriate data from both internal and external sources. Many of these data sources include or are derived from the organization's accounting information systems. Managerial end-users with different personal characteristics and approaches are likely to compose queries of differing levels of accuracy when searching the data contained within these accounting information systems. This research investigates how cognitive style elements of personality influence managerial end-user performance in database querying tasks. A laboratory experiment was conducted in which participants generated queries to retrieve information from an accounting information system to satisfy typical information requirements. The experiment investigated the influence of personality on the accuracy of queries of varying degrees of complexity. Relying on the Myers–Briggs personality instrument, results show that perceiving individuals (as opposed to judging individuals) who rely on intuition (as opposed to sensing) composed queries more accurately. As expected, query complexity and academic performance also explain the success of data extraction tasks.

Computer Science is a subject which has difficulty in marketing itself. Further, pinning down a standard curriculum is difficult-there are many preferences which are hard to accommodate. This paper argues the case that part of the problem is the fact that, unlike more established disciplines, the subject does not clearly distinguish the study of principles from the study of artifacts. This point was raised in Curriculum 2001 discussions, and debate needs to start in good time for the next curriculum standard. This paper provides a starting point for debate, by outlining a process by which principles and artifacts may be separated, and presents a sample curriculum to illustrate the possibilities. This sample curriculum has some positive points, though these positive points are incidental to the need to start debating the issue. Other models, with a less rigorous ordering of principles before artifacts, would still gain from making it clearer whether a specific concept was fundamental, or a property of a specific technology. The article describes an attempt to improve student learning outcomes in a computer networks course by making lectures more active learning experiences. Quick quizzes, group and individual exercises, the review of student questions, as well as multiple breaks, were incorporated into the weekly three-hour lectures. Student responses to the modified lectures was overwhelmingly positive: over 85% of respondents agreed that the lectures aided understanding, with large majorities of the respondents finding the individual activities useful to their learning. Although student examination performance improved over the previous year, performance on an examination question that was designed to examine deep understanding remained unchanged.

The rise of component-based software development has created an urgent need for effective application program interface (API) documentation. Experience has shown that it is hard to create precise and readable documentation. Prose documentation can provide a good overview but lacks precision. Formal methods offer precision but the resulting documentation is expensive to develop. Worse, few developers have the skill or inclination to read formal documentation. We present a pragmatic solution to the problem of API documentation. We augment the prose documentation with executable test cases, including expected outputs, and use the prose plus the test cases as the documentation. With appropriate tool support, the test cases are easy to develop and read. Such test cases constitute a completely formal, albeit partial, specification of input/output behavior. Equally important, consistency between code and documentation is demonstrated by running the test cases. This approach provides an attractive bridge between formal and informal documentation. We also present a tool that supports compact and readable test cases; and generation of test drivers and documentation, and illustrate the approach with detailed case studies. Histidines 107 and 109 in the glycine receptor ( GlyR) alpha(1) subunit have previously been identified as determinants of the inhibitory zinc-binding site. Based on modeling of the GlyR alpha(1) subunit extracellular domain by homology to the acetylcholine-binding protein crystal structure, we hypothesized that inhibitory zinc is bound within the vestibule lumen at subunit interfaces, where it is ligated by His(107) from one subunit and His(109) from an adjacent subunit. This was tested by co-expressing alpha(1) subunits containing the H107A mutation with alpha(1) subunits containing the H109A mutation. Although sensitivity to zinc inhibition is markedly reduced when either mutation is individually incorporated into all five subunits, the GlyRs formed by the co-expression of H107A mutant subunits with H109A mutant subunits exhibited an inhibitory zinc sensitivity similar to that of the wild type alpha(1) homomeric GlyR. This constitutes strong evidence that inhibitory zinc is coordinated at the interface between adjacent alpha(1) subunits. No evidence was found for beta subunit involvement in the coordination of inhibitory zinc, indicating that a maximum of two zinc-binding sites per alpha(1)beta receptor is sufficient for maximal zinc inhibition. Our data also show that two zinc-binding sites are sufficient for significant inhibition of alpha(1) homomers. The binding of zinc at the interface between adjacent alpha(1) subunits could restrict intersubunit movements, providing a feasible mechanism for the inhibition of channel activation by zinc.

Esta dissertação apresenta o desenvolvimento de uma plataforma multimodal de aquisição e processamento de sinais. O projeto proposto insere-se no contexto do desenvolvimento de interfaces multimodais para aplicação em dispositivos robóticos cujo propósito é a reabilitação motora adaptando o controle destes dispositivos de acordo com a intenção do usuário. A interface desenvolvida adquire, sincroniza e processa sinais eletroencefalográficos (EEG), eletromiográficos (EMG) e sinais provenientes de sensores inerciais (IMUs). A aquisição dos dados é feita em experimentos realizados com sujeitos saudáveis que executam tarefas motoras de membros inferiores. O objetivo é analisar a intenção de movimento, a ativação muscular e o início efetivo dos movimentos realizados, respectivamente, através dos sinais de EEG, EMG e IMUs. Para este fim, uma análise offline foi realizada. Nessa análise, são utilizadas técnicas de processamento dos sinais biológicos e técnicas para processar sinais provenientes de sensores inerciais. A partir destes, os ângulos da articulação do joelho também são aferidos ao longo dos movimentos. Um protocolo experimental de testes foi proposto para as tarefas realizadas. Os resultados demonstraram que o sistema proposto foi capaz de adquirir, sincronizar, processar e classificar os sinais combinadamente. Análises acerca da acurácia dos classificadores utilizados mostraram que a interface foi capaz de identificar intenção de movimento em 76, 0 ± 18, 2% dos movimentos. A maior média de tempo de antecipação ao movimento foi obtida através da análise do sinal de EEG e foi de 716, 0±546, 1 milisegundos. A partir da análise apenas do sinal de EMG, este valor foi de 88, 34 ± 67, 28 milisegundos. Os resultados das etapas de processamento dos sinais biológicos, a medição dos ângulos da articulação, bem como os valores de acurácia e tempo de antecipação ao movimento se mostraram em conformidade com a literatura atual relacionada.

Novas ferramentas de Tecnologias Assistivas (TAs) têm aparecido ultimamente. Um exemplo são os Ambientes Virtuais (AVs), os quais são importantes para o desenvolvimento de novas TAs, que podem ser direcionadas para promoverem uma melhor qualidade de vida de pessoas com mobilidade reduzida permanente ou promover a reabilitação de pessoas com deficiência motora temporária. Outras ferramentas, que surgiram há algumas décadas com o desenvolvimento dos computadores, também ajudam no tratamento de pessoas com deficiência motora, que são as Interfaces Humano-Máquina (IHM). Utilizando em conjunto com equipamentos que capturam sinais biológicos, como equipamentos de Eletromiografia (EMG) e Eletroencefalografia (EEG), essas ferramentas se configuram como canais de comunicações entre o ser humano e os computadores, diferentemente das comumente utilizadas. Isso abre uma gama de possibilidades para sua utilização no tratamento e na assistência de pessoas com deficiência motora, onde sinais EMG podem ser utilizados para controlar próteses robóticas; e sinais EEG, quando capturados da região do córtex motor, podem ser utilizados em neuroreabilitação. Por outro lado, quando capturados na região occipital, os sinais de EEG podem ser utilizados para gerar comandos e outras finalidades. Este trabalho apresenta o desenvolvimento de novas ferramentas para auxiliar em pesquisas de TAs envolvendo sinais biológicos. Três diferentes AVs foram desenvolvidos para auxiliar nesse tipo de pesquisa. Além deles, um equipamento EEG comercial foi adaptado para ser utilizado com uma IHM, o qual utiliza dois desses três AVs desenvolvidos. Como resultados, temos a utilização bem sucedida do equipamento EEG obtido com sua utilização com SSVEP e Imaginação motora, além da implementação com sucesso dos três AVs desenvolvidos, que estão disponíveis para download gratuito, e que podem ser utilizados em demais pesquisas envolvendo TAs.

Experimental scratch resistance testing provides two numbers: the penetration depth Rp and the healing depth Rh. In molecular dynamics computer simulations, we create a material consisting of N statistical chain segments by polymerization; a reinforcing phase can be included. Then we simulate the movement of an indenter and response of the segments during X time steps. Each segment at each time step has three Cartesian coordinates of position and three of momentum. We describe methods of visualization of results based on a record of 6NX coordinates. We obtain a continuous dependence on time t of positions of each of the segments on the path of the indenter. Scratch resistance at a given location can be connected to spatial structures of individual polymeric chains.
