An environmentally sustainable and thus green business process is one that delivers organizational value whilst also exerting a minimal impact on the natural environment. Recent works from the field of Information Systems (IS) have argued that information systems can contribute to the design and implementation of sustainable business processes. While prior research has investigated how information systems can be used in order to support sustainable business practices, there is still a void as to the actual changes that business processes have to undergo in order to become environmentally sustainable, and the specific role that information systems play in enabling this change. In this paper, we provide a conceptualization of environmentally sustainable business processes, and discuss the role of functional affordances of information systems in enabling both incremental and radical changes in order to make processes environmentally sustainable. Our conceptualization is based on (a) a fundamental definition of the concept of environmental sustainability, grounded in two basic components: the environmental source and sink functions of any project or activity, and (b) the concept of functional affordances, which describe the potential uses originating in the material properties of information systems in relation to their use context. In order to illustrate the application of our framework and provide a first evaluation, we analyse two examples from prior research where information systems impacted on the sustainability of business processes.

The steady increase of regulations and its acceleration due to the financial crisis heavily affect the management of regulatory compliance. Regulations, such as Basel III and Solvency II particularly impact data warehouses and lead to many organizational and technical changes. From an IS perspective modeling techniques for data warehouse requirement elicitation help to manage conceptual requirements. From a legal perspective attempts to visualize regulatory requirements – so called legal visualization approaches – have been developed. This paper investigates whether a conceptual modeling technique for regulatory-driven data warehouse requirements is applicable for representing data warehouse requirements in a legal environment. Applying the modeling technique H2 for Reporting in three extensive modeling projects provides three contributions. First, evidence for the applicability of a modeling technique for regulatory-driven data warehouse requirements is given. Second, lessons learned for further modeling projects are provided. Third, a discussion towards a combined perspective of information modeling and legal visualization is presented.

Variable compression ratio enables an engine to achieve increased efficiency at part loads, where the majority of driving occurs, without sacrificing full load power requirements or increasing the risk of engine knock. Although over 100 patents and patent applications exist none of these systems has been commercialized yet due to issues related to feasibility, cost and frictional loss. A new approach of a self controlling variable compression ratio connecting rod is presented that does not need a friction intensive external activation and that could even be retrofitted. The potential in fuel consumption and exhaust emission reduction as well as increased power and torque output for this concept has been verified in combustion simulations utilizing the latest research results related to the dynamic heat transfer in the combustion chamber from Professor Kleinschmidt from the University of Siegen, Germany. The self controlling variable compression ratio connecting rod allows the con rod to compress at high load conditions thereby increasing cylinder volume to alleviate combustion pressures and temperatures and therefore limit knock onset. The biggest efficiency gains can be achieved at medium load where the reduction of heat loss during the compression of the connecting rod plays a major role additional to the well known efficiency gains of an increased compression ratio. The combustion simulation results shows fuel consumption can be reduced by between 3% and 5% during part load and wide open throttle operation at various engine speeds. Emissions are also reduced significantly; particularly NOx and CO emissions were reduced by up to 35%.The self controlling variable compression ratio connecting rod allows the con rod to compress at high load conditions thereby increasing cylinder volume to alleviate combustion pressures and temperatures and therefore limit knock onset. Virtual worlds (VWs) continue to be used extensively in Australia and New Zealand higher education institutions although the tendency towards making unrealistic claims of efficacy and popularity appears to be over. Some educators at higher education institutions continue to use VWs in the same way as they have done in the past; others are exploring a range of different VWs or using them in new ways; whilst some are opting out altogether. This paper presents an overview of how 46 educators from some 26 institutions see VWs as an opportunity to sustain higher education. The positives and negatives of using VWs are discussed.

The homoleptic 1:1 Lewis pair (LP) complex [MesTe(TeMes₂)]O₃SCF₃ (1) featuring the cation [MesTe(TeMes₂)]+ (1a) was obtained by the reaction of Mes₂Te with HO₃SCF₃. The reaction of 1 with Ph₃E (E = P, As, Sb, Bi) proceeded with substitution of Mes₂Te and provided the heteroleptic 1:1 LP complexes [MesTe(EPh₃)]O₃SCF₃ (2, E = P; 3, E = As) and [MesTe(SbPh₃)][Ph₂Sb(O₃SCF₃)₂] (4) featuring the cations [MesTe(EPh₃)]+ (2a, E = P; 3a, E = As; 4a, E = Sb) and the anion [Ph₂Sb(O₃SCF₃)₂]− (4b). In the reaction with Ph₃Bi, the crude product contained the cation [MesTe(BiPh₃)]+ (5a) and the anion [Ph₂Bi(O₃SCF₃)₂]− (5b); however, the heteroleptic 1:1 LP complex [MesTe(BiPh₃)][Ph₂Bi(O₃SCF₃)₂] (5) could not be isolated because of its limited stability. Instead, fractional crystallization furnished a large amount of Ph₂BiO₃SCF₃ (6), which was also obtained by the reaction of Ph₃Bi with HO₃SCF₃. The formation of the anions 4b and 5b involves a phenyl group migration from Ph₃E (E = Sb, Bi) to the MesTe+ cation and afforded MesTePh as the byproduct, which was identified in the mother liquor. The heteroleptic 1:1 LP complexes 2–4 were also obtained by the one-pot reaction of Mes₂Te, Ph₃E (E = P, As, Sb) and HO₃SCF₃. Compounds 1–4 and 6 were investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The molecular structures of 1a–4a were used for density functional theory calculations at the B3PW91/TZ level of theory and studied using natural bond order (NBO) analyses as well as real-space bonding descriptors derived from an atoms-in-molecules (AIM) analysis of the theoretically obtained electron density. Additionally, the electron localizability indicator (ELI-D) and the delocalization index are derived from the corresponding pair density.

An 8 screen stereoscopic 3D Multi-user environment set in a circular formation. Paticipants are tracked by 8 kinect sensors as they move around the 360 degree installation. Participants inherit a species upon entering. Artificial Life based entities cluster towards the human particpants of their species and their songs evolve according to the interactions.
