Dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB) is a double chain vesicle-forming cationic surfactant, whereas octa-ethyleneglycol mono-n-dodecyl ether (C12E8) is a single chain micelle-forming nonionic surfactant. At room temperature (ca. 22 degrees C) C12E8 molecules self-assemble in water as micelles while DODAB is insoluble. A mixture of DODAB and C12E8, however, can be soluble in water at room temperature depending on the relative amount of the compounds. We report the formation of small unilamellar vesicles (SUVs) by dialyzing at room temperature a mixture of 1.0 mM DODAB with 10 mM C12E8 in water. Extended bilayers are formed as well in equilibrium with vesicles. Such structures are viewed by a cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) image. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. We use a (CO2)-C-13 laser as optical pumping source to search for new THz laser lines generated from (CH3OH)-C-13. Nineteen new THz laser lines (also identified as far-infrared, FIR) ranging from 42.3 mu m (7.1 THz) to 717.7 mu m (0.42 THz) are reported. They are characterized in wavelength, offset, relative polarization, relative intensity, and optimum working pressure. We have assigned eight laser lines to specific rotational energy levels in the excited state associated with the C-O stretching mode. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The measurement of sulfur dioxide in air at the parts-per-billion level is described. The experimental arrangement consists of two optical fibers placed on opposite sides of a liquid droplet of malachite green solution. After light has been passed through the droplet, the transmitted light is measured by a referenced photodetection arrangement. The light used in this absorption process is from a monochromatic source (lambda(max) 625 nm). This arrangement permits the variation of color in the droplet to be measured. The sulfur dioxide in the sample is collected by the droplet; it reacts with malachite green resulting in a colorless dye. The decoloration of the solution is proportional to the concentration of sulfur dioxide sampled. The signal depends on the sample flow rate. The present technique is simple, inexpensive, and permits a fast and near real time measurement while consuming very little reagent, (C) 1999 Academic Press.

This paper describes the construction of an electrode of the second kind, Pt\Hg\Hg-2(Bzt)(2)\graphite, sensitive to benzoate ion (Bzt). The electrode provides a near-Nernstian response (-58.19 mV/decade at 25 degrees C) to benzoate ion in the concentration range 1.11 x 10(-1) to 5.00 x 10(-4) M at pH 7.0 and ionic strength 0.500-3.00M, adjusted with NaClO4. The electrode is easily constructed, shows a fast response time, is low in cost, has excellent response stability, and has a lifetime greater than 24 months. which is much longer than those earlier reported for other systems. A further salient feature of the electrode is that perchlorate does not interfere in its response, which may be advantageous in the analysis of perchloric acid-treated samples. It was applied to the determination of sodium benzoate in some commercial expectorating medicinal syrups using the standard additions method. The results obtained by the proposed procedure compare very favorably with those obtained through the reference method recommended by the United States Pharmacopeia. (C) 1998 Academic Press.

Parmodel is a web server for automated comparative modeling and evaluation of protein structures. The aim of this tool is to help inexperienced users to perform modeling, assessment, visualization, and optimization of protein models as well as crystallographers to evaluate structures solved experimentally. It is subdivided in four modules: Parmodel Modeling, Parmodel Assessment, Parmodel Visualization, and Parmodel Optimization. The main module is the Parmodel Modeling that allows the building of several models ford a same protein in a reduced time, through the distribution of modeling processes on a Beowulf cluster. Parmodel automates and integrates the main softwares used in comparative modeling as MODELLER, Whatcheck, Procheck, Raster3D, Molscript, and Gromacs. This web server is freely accessible at http://www.biocristalografia.df.ibilce.unesp.br/tools/parmodel. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A joint experimental and theoretical study has been carried out to rationalize for the first time the photoluminescence (PL) properties of disordered CaWO4 (CWO) thin films. From the experimental side, thin films of CWO have been synthesized following a soft chemical processing, their structure has been confirmed by X-ray diffraction data and corresponding PL properties have been measured using the 488 nm line of an argon ion laser. Although we observe PL at room temperature for the crystalline thin films, the structurally disordered samples present much more intense emission. From the theoretical side, first principles quantum mechanical calculations, based on density functional theory at B3LYP level, have been employed to study the electronic structure of a crystalline (CWO-c) and asymmetric (CWO-a) periodic model. Electronic properties are analyzed in the light of the experimental results and their relevance in relation to the PL behavior of CWO is discussed. The symmetry breaking process on going from CWO-c to CWO-a creates localized electronic levels above the valence band and a negative charge transfer process takes place from threefold, WO3, to fourfold, WO4,. tungsten coordinations. The correlation of both effects seems to be responsible for the PL of amorphous CWO. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We report on the use of dynamic scale theory and fractal analyses in the Study of distinct growth stages of layer-by-layer (LBL) films of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and a side-chain-substituted azobenzene copolymer (Ma-co-DR13). The LBL films were adsorbed oil glass substrates and characterized with atomic force microscopy with the Ma-co-DR13 at the top layer. The ganular morphology exhibited by the films allowed the observation of the growth process inside and outside the grains. The growth outside the grains was found to follow the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang model, with fractal dimensions of ca. 2.6. One could expect that inside the grains the morphology would be close to a Euclidian surface with fractal dimension of ca. 2 for any growth stage. The latter, however, was observed only for thicker films containing more than 10 bilayers. For thinner films the morphology was well described by a self-affine fractal. Such dependence of the growth behavior with the film thickness is associated with a more complete coverage of adsorption sites in thicker films due to diffusion of polymer molecules. Although insects lack the adaptive immune response of the mammalians, they manifest effective innate immune responses that include both cellular and humoral components. Cellular responses are mediated by hemocytes and Immoral responses include the activation of proteolytic cascades that initiate many events, including NO production. In this work, we determined NO production in Chrysomya megaccphala hemolymph and hemocytes after yeast inoculation. Assays were performed with non-infected controls (NIL), saline-injected larvae (SIL) or larvae injected with Saccharomyces cerevisiae (YIL). The hemolymph of injected groups was collected 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 12, 24 or 48 h post-injection. NO levels in SIL were comparable to those measured in NIL until 12 h, which might be considered the basal production, increasing at 24 and 48 h post-injection, probably in response to the increased larval fragility after cuticle rupture. YIL exhibited significantly higher levels of NO than were found in other groups, peaking at 24 h. L-NAME and EDTA caused a significant reduction of NO production in YIL at this time, suggesting the activity of a Ca2+ -dependent NOS. Plasmatocytes and granular cells phagocytosed the yeasts. Plasmatocytes initiated the nodule formation and granular cells were the only hemocyte type to produce NO. These results permit us to conclude that yeasts induced augmented NO production in C. megacephala hemolymph and granular cells are the hemocyte type involved with the generation of this molecule. The BaMoO4 nanopowders were prepared by the Complex Polymerization Method (CPM). The structure properties of the BaMoO4 powders were characterized by FTIR transmittance spectra, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra, photoluminescence spectra (PL) and high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HR-SEM). The XRD, FTIR and Raman data showed that BaMoO4 at 300 degrees C was disordered. At 400 degrees C and higher temperature, BaMoO4 crystalline scheelite-type phases could be identified, without the presence of additional phases, according to the XRD, FTIR and Raman data. The calculated average crystallite sizes, calculated by XRD, around 40 nm, showed the tendency to increase with the temperature. The crystallite sizes, obtained by HR-SEM, were around of 40-50 nm. The sample that presented the highest intensity of the red emission band was the one heat treated at 400 degrees C for 2 h, and the sample that displayed the 'highest intensity of the green emission band was the one heat treated at 700 degrees C for 2 h. The CPM was shown to be a low cost route for the production of BaMoO4 nanopowders, with the advantages of lower temperature, smaller time and reduced cost. The optical properties observed for BaMoO4 nanopowders suggested that this material is a highly promising candidate for photoluminescent applications. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We have used a pharmacological approach to study the mechanisms underlying the rat lung injury and the airway reactivity changes induced by inhalation of formaldehyde (FA) (1% formalin solution, 90 min once a day, 4 days). The reactivity of isolated tracheae and intrapulmonary bronchi were assessed in dose-response curves to methacholine (MCh). Local and systemic inflammatory phenomena were evaluated in terms of leukocyte countings in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid, blood, bone marrow lavage and spleen. Whereas the tracheal reactivity to MCh did not change, a significant bronchial hyporesponsiveness (BHR) was found after FA inhalation as compared with naive rats. Also, FA exposure significantly increased the total cell numbers in BAL, in peripheral blood and in the spleen, but did not modify the counts in bone marrow. Capsaicin hindered the increase of leukocyte number recovered in BAL fluid after FA exposure. Both compound 48/80 and indomethacin were able to prevent the lung neutrophil influx after FA, but indomethacin had no effect on that of mononuclear cells. Following FA inhalation, the treatment with sodium cromoglycate (SCG), but not with the nitric oxide (NO) synthase inhibitor L-NAME, significantly reduced the total cell number in BAL. Compound 48/80, L-NAME and SCG significantly prevented BHR to MCh after FA inhalation, whereas capsaicin was inactive in this regard. on the other hand, indomethacin exacerbated BHR. These data suggest that after FA inhalation, the resulting lung leukocyte influx and BHR may involve nitric oxide, airway sensory fibers and mast cell-derived mediators. The effect of NO seemed to be largely restricted to the bronchial tonus, whereas neuropeptides appeared to be linked to the inflammatory response, therefore indicating that the mechanisms responsible for the changes of airway responsiveness caused by FA may be separate from those underlying its inflammatory lung effects. This study describes alterations induced in Rana catesbeiana (bullfrog) liver after extended dietary exposure to aflatoxins (AFs). Bullfrogs of both sexes were fed for 120 days a commercial chow blended with a rice bran-based mixture of Al's containing 667.0, 11.65, 141.74, and 3.53 mg/kg of AFs B1, B2, G1, and G2, respectively. Animals were sacrificed on study days 45, 90, and 120. Severe and progressive liver lesions with structural collapse, increased hepatocyte and biliary duct cell proliferation, appearance of basophilic hepatocytes, and diffuse scarring, were observed at all time points. There were no quantitative alterations in the liver melanomacrophage centers of the AFs-exposed animals. Increased amounts of lipid hydroperoxides, indicative of ongoing oxidative stress, were more evident in the Addutor magnum muscle than in the AFs-damaged livers. No tumors were found in the R. catesbeiana livers after 120 days of exposure to relatively high doses of AFs. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

It is shown that the causal approach to (2 + 1)-dimensional quantum electrodynamics yields a well-defined perturbative theory. In particular, and in contrast to renormalized perturbative quantum field theory, it is free of any ambiguities and ascribes a nonzero value to the dynamically generated, nonperturbative photon mass. We report an unusual case of a 37-year-old woman who presented in 1980 with a serous papillary cystadenocarcinoma of the ovary. The patient refused any treatment and the patient was lost to follow-up for 6 years. After this period of time she returned with an extremely large, cutaneous, cauliflower-type of metastasis located in the lower abdominal wall and measuring 20 x 20 cm. She received two courses of chemotherapy treatment consisting of intraperitoneal cisplatin (100 mg/m2) and intravenous epirubicin (50 mg/m2) every 3 weeks. After the second course of chemotherapy she received cobalt radiotherapy (5000 cGy). Subsequently, she received four more courses of chemotherapy with dramatic remission of the cutaneous metastasis. Shortly after chemotherapy, the patient underwent a laparotomy consisting of the resection of the abdominal wall including the cutaneous metastasis completed by total abdominal hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and omentectomy. The patient is well after the surgery and without any evidence of residual disease after 6 years of follow up. This description illustrates a rare example of ovarian cancer with skin metastases and favorable outcome. (C) 1994 Academic Press, Inc.

We have revisited the assignments of the far-infrared laser lines emitted by (CH3OH)-C-13 by comparing the laser systems to a high resolution Fourier transform absorption spectrum of (CH3OH)-C-13. The absorption spectrum was analyzed by means of the ''Ritz'' program, which calculates the energy level values directly from the Rydberg-Ritz combination principle. We report new assignments for 11 FIR laser transitions, 17 frequency predictions for new possible laser lines, and we confirm 11 previous assignments. (C) 1996 Academic Press, Inc.
