The anomaly in the candidate microlensing event PA-99-N2

The light curve of PA-99-N2, one of the recently announced microlensing candidates toward M31, shows small deviations from the standard Paczynski form. We explore a number of possible explanations, including correlations with the seeing, the parallax effect, and a binary lens. We find that the observations are consistent with an unresolved red giant branch or asymptotic giant branch star in M31 being microlensed by a binary lens. We find that the best-fit binary lens mass ratio is similar to1.2x10(-2), which is one of the most extreme values found for a binary lens so far. If both the source and lens lie in the M31 disk, then the standard M31 model predicts the probable mass range of the system to be 0.02-3.6 M-circle dot (95% confidence limit). In this scenario, the mass of the secondary component is therefore likely to be below the hydrogen-burning limit. On the other hand, if a compact halo object in M31 is lensing a disk or spheroid source, then the total lens mass is likely to lie between 0.09 and 32 M-circle dot, which is consistent with the primary being a stellar remnant and the secondary being a low-mass star or brown dwarf. The optical depth (or, alternatively, the differential rate) along the line of sight toward the event indicates that a halo lens is more likely than a stellar lens, provided that dark compact objects comprise no less than 15% (or 5%) of halos.

High-efficiency low-voltage-stress Class-EF PA with extended maximum operating frequency

The Class-EF power amplifier (PA) introduced recently has a peak switch voltage much lower than the well-known Class-E PA. However, the value of the transistor output capacitance at high frequencies is typically larger than the required Class-EF optimum shunt capacitance. As a result, softswitching operation that minimizes power dissipation during OFF-to-ON transient cannot be achieved at high frequencies. A novel Class-EF topology with transmission-line load network proposed in this paper allows the PA to operate at much higher frequencies without trading the other figures of merit. Closed-form formulations are derived to simultaneously satisfy the Class-EF impedances requirement at fundamental frequency, all even harmonics, and the first two odd harmonics as well as to provide matching to 50O load. © 2011 Institut fur Mikrowellen.

Sport Mega-Event Hosting and Environmental Concern: From Sydney to Rio

This paper examines the extent to which the proclamation by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that Olympic Games hosting can improve the environmental capacity of the host nation holds. It singles out the post-event environmental concern exhibited by the population of the host country as the most important indicator and proceeds towards examining how successive host nations have performed in relation to that. The intervening variable of the global environmental crisis is put under the microscope and as a result the general conclusion suggests that environmental concern is much more tied to the general socio-economic predicament that the host country finds itself to be in the post-event phase than the successful hosting of green Games.

Hydroclimatic shifts in northeast Thailand during the last two millennia - the record of Lake Pa Kho

The Southeast Asian mainland is located in the central path of the Asian summer monsoon, a region where paleoclimatic data are still sparse. Here we present a multi-proxy (TOC, C/N, δ¹³C, biogenic silica, and XRF elemental data) study of a 1.5m sediment/peat sequence from Lake Pa Kho, northeast Thailand, which is supported by 20 AMS ¹⁴C ages. Hydroclimatic reconstructions for Pa Kho suggest a strengthened summer monsoon between BC 170-AD 370, AD 800-960, and after AD 1450; and a weakening of the summer monsoon between AD 370-800, and AD 1300-1450. Increased run-off and a higher nutrient supply after AD 1700 can be linked to agricultural intensification and land-use changes in the region. This study fills an important gap in data coverage with respect to summer monsoon variability over Southeast Asia during the past 2000 years and enables the mean position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) to be inferred based on comparisons with other regional studies. Intervals of strengthened/weaker summer monsoon rainfall suggest that the mean position of the ITCZ was located as far north as 35°N between BC 170-AD 370 and AD 800-960, whereas it likely did not reach above 17°N during the drought intervals of AD 370-800 and AD 1300-1450. The spatial pattern of rainfall variation seems to have changed after AD 1450, when the inferred moisture history for Pa Kho indicates a more southerly location of the mean position of the summer ITCZ.

Spectacles of military urbanism in online representations of the Elite Squad of the military police of Rio de Janeiro: a multimodal approach

This paper presents a multimodal analysis of online self-representations of the Elite Squad of the military police of Rio de Janeiro, the Special Police Operations Battalion BOPE. The analysis is placed within the wider context of a “new military urbanism”, which is evidenced in the ongoing “Pacification” of many of the city’s favelas, in which BOPE plays an active interventionist as well as a symbolic role, and is a kind of solution which clearly fails to address the root causes of violence which lie in poverty and social inequality. The paper first provides a sociocultural account of BOPE’s role in Rio’s public security and then looks at some of the mainly visual mediated discourses the Squad employs in constructing a public image of itself as a modern and efficient, yet at the same time “magical” police force.

A figura masculina na docência do ensino primário : um "corpo estranho" no quotidiano das escolas públicas "primárias" do Rio de Janeiro-Brasil e Aveiro-Portugal

Esta tese é um estudo comparativo que dá conta de uma busca centrada na figura do professor do sexo masculino que trabalha no ensino público do “ensino primário” do Rio de Janeiro - Brasil e em Aveiro - Portugal. O que se pretende averiguar, fundamentalmente, são os motivos e as conseqüências da escolha profissional destes professores que se enveredam por uma área tipicamente associada com o feminino, uma associação tão forte que estes professores parecem um “corpo estranho” no quotidiano das escolas públicas “primárias”. Ou seja, nosso objetivo é entender por que os homens escolhem o magistério? Esta escolha é bem vista pelas pessoas do seu quotidiano ou é desvalorizada? Estes homens estão satisfeitos com a sua profissão ou ela serve como um trampolim para outras? A aptidão para o magistério depende do sexo? Eles são bem recebidos na sua profissão ou sofrem discriminações? Será que ganhamos algo com a existência ou ingresso de homens no magistério primário? Pesquisar a opção docente dos homens que ingressam no magistério público é importante porque a escola é o espaço de vivência e convivência educacional onde a maioria da população é socializada. Desta forma, esta investigação mostra-se relevante ao promover discussões centradas nas representações de gênero que rondam o campo profissional da docência, questionando a normalização do magistério enquanto profissão aliada a atributos considerados femininos, tendo como desafio desmistificar as representações preconceituosas de gênero que cercam os professores deste segmento. A tese foi orientada pela abordagem de investigação narrativa, centrada no método qualitativo, para obter uma maior profundidade dos dados, assim como no método quantitativo, com o fim de obter também dados mais gerais sobre a temática. A informação foi recolhida através de inquéritos por questionário e entrevistas com professores “primários” do sexo masculino. Apontamos que a presença de professores do sexo masculino na docência do “ensino primário” é uma forma de inserir as questões de gênero na educação, mostrando que existem outros temas e outras vozes que ecoam nas escolas, ou seja, indivíduos capazes de exercer esta profissão independente do seu sexo. Demonstramos, acima de tudo, que apesar das discriminações, do malestar, do estatuto financeiro e social, o homem pode escolher essa atividade por gosto, ter sucesso e reconhecimento profissional.

Aspectos do nacionalismo pianístico do Rio de Janeiro dos anos de 1930

Dentro do recorte temporal dos anos 1930-1940, esta tese pretende investigar de que forma as características e especificidades da corrente nacionalista e do Nacionalismo musical se espelham na criação artística e musical brasileira em especial no corpus da obra para piano solo para concerto daquele momento. A investigação consiste em dois momentos distintos de pesquisa, sendo o primeiro compreendido de revisão bibliográfica sobre a corrente nacionalista, Nacionalismo e Nacionalismo musical, além de uma contextualização histórica acerca dos anos 1930 no Brasil, Europa e Estados Unidos da América e também biografia de compositores nacionalistas brasileiros do período; seu segundo momento compreende elaboração de dados acerca de programas de concerto de piano relativos ao Nacionalismo musical, análise de peças além de discussões acerca de notícias de periódicos daquele momento.
